Yankees GM Brian Cashman just announced that Andy Pettitte is being placed on the 15-day DL with a strained trap.
“We don’t think it’s overly serious, but we want to play it safe, so we’re going to bring (Vidal) Nuno back,” Cashman said. “I’d rather just resolve this now, give him the time off and reset his clock.”
Pettitte experienced back spasms in his start last night, and now the Yankees want to play it safe. Pettitte said that he feels much better today and Cashman said that they expect him to return to the rotation as soon as he comes off of the DL, so this doesn’t sound like it will be an extended absence. Nuno will take Pettitte’s spot in the rotation.
“I understand,” Pettitte said. “It could be overly cautious, but I also understand that I could need a few days to let it calm down before I can throw a bullpen, and I need to pitch on Tuesday. They don’t want to send me out there in Baltimore Tuesday and starting warming up and it locks up, and then we don’t have pitching. We’re in a tough stretch right now, so I understand.”
