Chip. Well said. Don’t you think that it appeared Montero was trying far too hard in the 3 game series?
His throw to 2nd base last night was the poorest technique I can remember seeing. You just know the Yankees coaches and Pena were sharking their heads when they saw how Montero threw the ball towards 2nd base.
    ———————–

I don’t think he was trying too hard – I just don’t think he’s any good back there.

Look, I don’t particularly like the fact that Girardi would rather play Chris Stewart than a guy who can hit. But I do think that when you have Girardi, Pena and Butch Wynager as coaches in your system the one thing your organization will be able to do is evaluate a catcher’s defense.

Their call was that Montero’s a defensive liability, wasn’t improving and wasn’t likely to improve with age.

  2. Chip May 17th, 2013 at 12:15 pm

By the way, if this Stewart thing means a DL stint and they call up Bobby Wilson I have zero doubt in my mind that Wilson will start ahead of Romine.

  3. Warning Track Power May 17th, 2013 at 12:19 pm

Chip-You are on a roll today with your opinions. Based on what you said, I believe that Cashman and the coaches were pretty much thinking the very same.
Which is why Cashman was able to accept trading Montero and making room for defensive catchers in the minor leagues.
Montero might never be as good as Mike Piazza behind the plate and that could keep Montero from extending his career with the M’s. If Montero does not improve his catching skills, I can see Montero being the type of player who is traded often.

By the way, the injury to Stewart concerns me. Mostly because there is no other catcher on the 40 man. So whomever is called up to take his place, there is someone on the 40 man that will be waived, released, etc…

After reading how Hal stepped out and proclaimed the success this season has made him more steadfast in his resolve to lower/slash payroll and reap the minimal profits from it, I’m starting to believe the people who say they are preparing for a sale. It’s like he’s intentionally telling his customers we plan to make more money next year while charging you the same prices.

It’s wrong. What this portion of the season should’ve enforced in this rube is that having Kuroda, Andy, CC, Phil and bullpen backed by Mo keeps you in many games.

The fact is the guys who are producing are only producing because of random events. In Vernon Wells’ case, he got an Arod contract, didn’t live up to it and the team owning that contract was desperate to eat as much of it as they had to in order to get rid of him. Just think about the confluence of events that it took to get him, add in his resurgence and you understand how relying on that magic working with every dumpster dive is about as sound a plan as buying lottery tickets with your retirement money.

With Overbay, this was a guy who was one step away from a career in broadcasting before the Yankee plan of Juan Rivera/Dan Johnson at 1b didn’t exactly work when Tex went down.

Again, for every dumpster dive they’ve hit on, they’ve missed on one’s like Rivera, Matt Diaz, Dan Johnson, Ben Francisco, etc. We’re just seeing the victories because they are winning.

If he’s legitimately saying that he thinks they can continually put together a team full of cast offs who play like Wells & Overbay have thus far, he’s high.

Cashman did a great job finding those 2. But it can equally be said he did a poor job missing on the other names who have come and gone and didn’t pan out who were similar cast offs.

I wish Hal would just keep his mouth shut. He’s learning nothing from this season and the more he stumps to the press that 189 has always been the goal, the more fans are going to get turned off. They’re not flocking to the team while they’re winning in the stands or on TV so hearing the owner throw wet blankets over the future is maddening.

You know what I want to hear as a fan? Mo is having a brilliant final season. We’re going to do whatever it takes to surround him with a team that let’s him walk off the field with a world series win and the game ball in his glove.

Yeah, it might not happen, but saying something inspiring would go a long way to letting fans think this guy has a clue.

He just cares about his payroll games. He’s a doofus and if he’s relying on winning the lottery every season with cast off players then the Yankees are in deep trouble. For every hit, they miss many many times on these kind of guys.

Not to mention cast off guys are usually older, hence the injury issues we’re seeing. Youk and Hafner both being banged up and missing games was about as predictable as Arod telling a reporter he’s in the best shape of his life…again.

    Gardner had a terrible jump

    ——————

Totally disagree, GM. Gardner was half way to 2nd and 3rd before Wilhelmsen even released the ball!
    ************
Shame, I watched it a few times, Gardner had not moved until the pitcher had lifted his knee just about at the top, but he had a long delivery and by the time he let go of the ball he had gotten two steps away. In general Gardner does not get good jumps, he just outruns it but if you don;t move until well after the pitcher starts, you did not get a good jump and Gardner was slower than just after

Clearing a spot on the 40 isn’t a problem. You dump Ben Francisco or Melky Mesa and be done with it.

The issue is who comes up. Do you go with Bobby Wilson who is hitting a cool .174 in Scranton or JR Murphy who is hitting nearly .300 with a .380 OBP for Trenton? Wilson is a Major League veteran whereas Murphy has never played above AA. If you call up Wilson, logic dictates that Romine is your regular catcher if you call up Murphy the situation isn’t as clear.

When Romine was called up Girardi sat him because he wasn’t familiar with the pitchers, so my guess is that he would rather have the veteran over two rookies.

    G. Love

Hal has been extremely lucky that the “band-aid brigade” have made a winning start to the season. Had this not been the case, he would have been hearing it from fans alright.

But even with a winning record, attendances at the Stadium are down…and that’s not all due to the weather.

The New York Yankees are the glamour team of baseball. There’s a reason they have the highest payroll in baseball. It’s because they create the most revenue and have the biggest fanbase worldwide.

What is working (so far) this year won’t necessarily work next year. Yankees fans pay top dollar to watch superstars, not reclamation projects.

  11. Tackelberry May 17th, 2013 at 12:36 pm

Great news that last year’s top international signee, Omar Luis Rodriguez has indeed gottne his visa an will pitch for S.I. this Summer. ANother great arm added to the system. Also anxious to see Luis Severino, who blew scouts away this Spring with his stuff and velocity, pitching for one of the GCL teams this summer

“I don’t think he was trying too hard – I just don’t think he’s any good back there.”

well, you must be really unhappy to have your teams’ ass kicked by a team that had a catcher who you didn’t think was any good :)

if he’s actually not any good as you thoerize and they still win , what does that tell you about needing a gold glove catcher back there?

  13. Warning Track Power May 17th, 2013 at 12:37 pm

I would love to Girardi and Cashman to roll the dice and give Murphy a chance for about 15 days, if Stewart needs to be placed on the DL. Imagine the young kid up here, getting to play a few games and show the fans what all the hype over him is about.
At the same time, you run the risk of damaging the kids confidence is he does not play well when he is inserted in the game. That is always a risk.

Then you have Bobby Wilson. A vet that is not a prospect, but just an insurance policy. Logic would dictate that Wilson would be called up. Not sure the Yankees have a choice.

  14. Joe from Long Island May 17th, 2013 at 12:39 pm

the more i see of brett gardner, the more i think that he is not with the yankees long term, certainly not as a starting outfielder. while he’s very good in the field, in running down balls hit a long way, and catching them – he just does not seem like he’s got instinctual skills – either at bat or on the base paths. i’m starting to think the reason he doesn’t bunt more is that he is not comfortable doing so, despite what a few more bunt singles could do for his average.

and girardi’s comment the other day about him not running when a stealing second was indicated (the king felix game? i can’t remember specifically) spoke volumes, from a manager who tends to not openly criticize his players.

when his speed starts to go, he will be even less of a factor.

i have to think that if they had a decent alternative to brett, he’d be the 4th of, or even part of a package.

i’m on board with that. total thumbs up to it.

billy martin brought a cacther from double once.

    jim sundberg was his name.

    kind of worked out well.

  16. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 12:46 pm

    bruceb,

Exactly. To take the first quarter of the season and come out to the press puffing your chest about slashing payroll being the way because some of the cast off guys are stepping up…I don’t get it.

He’s basically saying this is what the Yankees are going to be going forward as the elephant in the room are Arod and Tex’s contracts holding the team hostage for the next 5 years or so.

When you charge $95 for a decent seat, you don’t intentionally play understudies.

I’m enjoying this team a great deal this season, but I loathe the owners and I’m back fighting that feeling that I love the team but despise the way it’s being run.

Slash prices. Not just on weeknights offering specials on games no one wants to see.

Slash them across the board and say we’re doing this because keeping the payroll under 189 should show some benefit to the fans.

If Vernon and Overbay didn’t step up like they have, this team would be in tatters. And for every Vernon and Overbay, there are more names that didn’t work out who were similar “value buys”.

I’ll never understand the budget game other than that’s how Hal likes to compete and testing intentionally cutting higher priced talent from the team to see if they win is how he’s getting his high.

If that’s the case, they need to deal Hughes since they can’t resign him. They should also look to deal Grandy and other players with only a year on their contract.

I mean, what if Kuroda and Andy want to return next year off of good years this season? They can’t afford them and sign Cano and even go to the table with Hughes.

    Ugh.

  17. randy l. May 17th, 2013 at 12:48 pm

    “Ugh.”

that was exactly my reaction this spring before the season started when i decided to root for implosion and a total rebuild.

  18. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 12:51 pm

    Joe from LI,

I’m almost where you are re:Gardner. I don’t think he’s a long term sign and I think next year would be his last before free agency. I don’t think he’s strictly a 4th OF though. I think if you have 2 solid corners and can bat Gardner 9th, he can be an asset. But relying on him putting it all together and being a consistent offensive force is starting to feel like the wish and hoping that Phil Hughes becomes an Ace while still here.

Gardy’s really becoming a defense 1st OF’er – if he gets on base at a .350+ clip and steals 50 bags he has value, but the tentative base running and the hesitance to bunt doesn’t match up with a guy who’s entire game is speed.

There’s still a lot of season left and we’ve seen him get on a roll (usually right before injuring himself) so I’m not ready to close the book on him. But the inconsistency is becoming the norm and the flashes are just that, flashes.

  19. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 12:54 pm

    randy,

The thing that’s maddening about what Hal said is he’s claiming they’re winning because of the young guys. What young guys have stepped up exactly outside of Claiborne and Phelps (who is doing what he did last season). Warren’s a long man – that’s not why they’re winning. Nuno was a sport starter. The starting C wasn’t a young pipeline guy.

I don’t think he watches the team. They’re winning because of veteran pitching, Cano and the cast offs stepping up.

Maybe if Adams and Romine hold down the jobs and produce I can buy this line of thinking, but they haven’t exactly been part of the winning thus far.

    I don’t get it.

Montero was 2-8 this series and due to his inability to throw runners out Gardner was able to get to 3b in the bottom of the 9th as the tying run. What exactly did Jesus Montero do to kick the Yankees ass?

  21. The Genius Maker May 17th, 2013 at 12:56 pm

By Randy’s “IL”logic, every team that loses to us should just say they got their ass kicked by Jayson Nix so it is obvious you don’t need a good SS to win.

  22. The Genius Maker May 17th, 2013 at 12:59 pm

We have been lucky this year in close games, mostly to Mariano (the Genius Maker) being perfect. Wells playing better than he has was a huge plus as well. Gardner is a valuable guy. not great but valuable. Last night he should have tied the game if we had any bench at all to hit a sac fly. In regards to Hal/Hank, it is a joke to see how many empty seats are in the stadium. I guess many are paid for, but it is still a joke

  23. Joe from Long Island May 17th, 2013 at 1:07 pm

G.Love – yes, two good corner ofs, and use gardner to play cf and bat 9th. but, right now, his good streaks are just that, streaks, or flashes as you say.

maybe some of their young pitching surplus can be used to get a few young of minor leaguers, to add to the group they already have in the hopes that one can fill the bill.

on another note – i think they’re already slashing ticket prices. they just don’t use that terminology. instead, they offer discounts to ticket holders for the prime time seats, as i have gotten in my emails (i split a saturday package with a friend).

last note before i have to run – back in the ’95 offseason, i was so ticked off that they fired buck showalter, hired that perenial loser torre, and traded mike stanley, one of my favorites, that i swore i wouldn’t go to any games that season or ever again, and that i hoped they’d lose so much that they’d realize the errors of their ways and fire torre and go with a winner as manager. i was sure going to show them, for not doing it my way.

oh, well…… maybe randy can play that role this year.

    have a good day.

  24. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 1:07 pm

Hmmm….a very wise & missed voice from the past just messaged me to say perhaps the spin on 189 being the goal from Hal is a negotiating ploy being used during the Cano extension talks.

I hope he’s right. He usually is, so I’ll lay off Hal for now. I didn’t even consider that for a second. If that’s the case, it’s pretty brilliant as long as Cano doesn’t hold it against the team for the duration of his deal.

  25. Chip May 17th, 2013 at 1:10 pm

Jesus Montero has 100 at bats this year. He’s hitting .204/.254/.333 with 3 HRs and 9 RBI he has allowed 3 passed balls and caught 1 baserunner in 21 attempts (5%)

By comparison, Chris Stewart, who is hot garbage has had 68 at bats. He’s hitting .265/.307/.397 with 3 HR and 6 RBI, has allowed 2 passed balls and has caught 6 baserunners in 13 attempts (46%)

As in rooting is coming up against reality check. What is he now, 1 for 21? He can’t stay.

Why would anyone root against Montero? Mostly, after all the time invested in him, I feel disappointed. He’s regressed. Any Yankee fan that would root against Montero would be some form of low-life, better kicked to the curb.

  31. ac1 May 17th, 2013 at 1:17 pm

Can anyone explain Girardis strategy last night of having Nix swing at a 3-1 pitch with 1 out and Cano on deck in the 9th?
    ____

I don’t think you should have to put a take sign on for a professional hitter with a 3-1 count. Nix should have been able to pick a pitch and hit it. He chose to swing at a ball at his eyes and then strike out (at least he swung this time).

  32. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 1:17 pm

As long as the face value ticket prices are as high as they are, they’re not really cutting back, IMO. I think the number of discounts being offered is a response to the poor attendance. If they were serious about cutting prices, they’d do it across the board.

    $1,000 a ticket… smh.

  33. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 1:18 pm

    Shame,

Thanks for getting the bottom of YankeeSource’s employment! I knew he claimed to be an international scout, and I had previously speculated it was for an NPB team but now we know :)

Basically all his ‘MLB’ scouting is done via TV or box scores or gameday, so being wary of those tweets is correct.

  34. ac1 May 17th, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Wasn’t there a question as to whether Wilson was injured too?

  35. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 1:19 pm

    Doreen,

I think the logic was that while negotiating an extension with Cano, it helps the Yankees get a “deal” on him if the owner keeps putting a cap on payroll in the press.

If Cano wants to stay, his agents will have to work within the framework of this cap and the Yankees can use it to shave off some dollars or years (I’m guessing) and not let things get out of control.

That being said, I think that could blow up in their faces if Cano gives them a discount and then after resigning him they go over the 189 cap and he resents the way he was negotiated with.

Still, if the 189 propaganda is part of an overall strategy to get the best extension on Cano they can, it’s smart business provided they’re not wedded to it and Cano doesn’t take it personally if he concedes things under the guise of it.

  36. ac1 May 17th, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Universe is telling the Yankees it wants the kids playing….

  37. Doreen May 17th, 2013 at 1:22 pm

    Thanks G Love

Sounds a little tricky, but I suppose that’s why Hal throws in the caveat about “as long as the team is competitive ” and that fielding a competitive team takes precedence over the budget.

It all depends on what “is” is. ;)

  38. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 1:22 pm

Having a 40 man log jam is never good. Especially when a lot of that jam is expensive contracted players. You dont want the 40 man to made up of a combination of expensive underperforming players and prospects who are not close to the majors.

Ideally you’d have prospects who enter the 40 man around the time they are ripening to be called up, such that they do not exhause their options before making their major league debut. They need to be realistic options.

I know where Bret is coming from in that statement, because he relishes Cashman being forced into having to deal. I think a GM should never put themselves into a position where they have to trade people. It should be a luxury. THe only exception to this would be having like 30 guys who are all very good and out of options, where you can expect reasonable return.

The yankees at this point may be forced to make a trade because the 40 man is full of unusable junk rather than an abundance of talent. Its not a good position to be in.

  39. Doreen May 17th, 2013 at 1:23 pm

    It certainly appears that way…

  40. Nick in SF May 17th, 2013 at 1:24 pm

  41. mick May 17th, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Any major league hitter should have the freedom to hit the ball in that situation. A sac fly ties the game. Matter of fact, a blooper or a ball hit in the hole can tie the game.
    ==============
    WTP

Any major leaguer? It’s a game of odds and odds were better with Cano getting that shot at tying the game.
As you saw as Nix swung and missed at a high rising fastball that even Cano wouldn’t have caught up with.
Being too critical? That’s what this game is about. Being critical and proactive in situations that require it. Cano was the man for that spot , not Nix.

  42. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 1:27 pm

    Doreen,

I hope our old friend from here is right on this one. I could actually get excited about an owner playing Jedi mind tricks to help the team long term. Especially, with how some of the long term deals have panned out here.

Although, before we condemn long term deals, they’ve worked here in the past at times.

I just think the Arod/Tex deals are so over the top right now it’s easy to say “we can’t do those anymore” yet not have a good solution for how to win w/o doing them at times for the right players.

  43. J. Alfred Prufrock May 17th, 2013 at 1:32 pm

    ///

I agree, only a low-life would root against him, but I don’t think that the people who are actually rooting for him are sitting around and shaking their heads and saying “tut, tut, now isn’t that a shame?” After all, he’s 23, not 33 (unlike most of our roster). His whole career’s ahead of him, lots of time to disappoint the people doing a show of “tut, tut”, I would say. :D

  44. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 1:32 pm

Has there ever been any evidence of the Yankees ‘stupid’ public statements ever turning out to be mastermind puppeteer mindgames? I think Nick has it right where Hal is just being dopey. He still wants to save money and the team winning is an excuse to to puff some more smoke in that direction.

I dont see how it could be an elaborate feint for Cano since in the very statement he says he can retain cano and still get under so long as they have a bunch of league minimum guys contributing.

    J.AP,

    Chip

Montero last year as a C hit .310/.343.498 with an ops+ of 132 as a 22 year old C in the major leagues and caught a no hitter.

Kinda of self serving to your ridiculous argument to forget those facts don’t you think?

Btw he also hit more homers after the ASB last year then Stewart basically has in his career..

    Just sayin…

Players sometimes struggle of get off to slow starts…happens all the time. Look at BJ Upton and Jayson Heyward for example.

Or a better way of looking at this is Montero as a 22 year old rookie had what you guys characterize as a dissappointing season yet it was a typical Chase Headly season prior to his post all star break last year and most here want to trade half the farm to get Headley.

It’s beyond premature to attempt to label Jesus a bust and in fact an objective look at his stats portray a totally different picture.

Having a 40 man log jam is never good. Especially when a lot of that jam is expensive contracted players. You dont want the 40 man to made up of a combination of expensive underperforming players and prospects who are not close to the majors.
    ——————

It’s not really a log jam. There are two players on it who can be easily removed without anyone missing them:

    Ben Francisco
    Melky Mesa

and once Eduardo Nunez returns from injury Alberto Gonzalez can join the list.

I’m taking off to see Jose Ramirez vs. Kevin Gausman tonight. I hope it lives up to its potential. Gausman just doesn’t walk people had has a big arm. Should be a great duel.

What David Adams did yesterday is what he’s been doing like forever in Trenton. That oppo doubles power in YS could turn into homers. It’s 330 down the line in Trenton.

I saw where somebody wanted Adams to lead off; he’s hit leadoff a decent amount and I agree he’d make a good choice at the top of the lineup.

Heading out. Will be following Kuroda-san on my Iphone tonight.

    Jerkface,

The only reason I consider it as a possibility is the source and the fact that puffing your chest out over a 1/4 of the season filled with lucky breaks on reclamation projects is ludicrous. This is a huge negotiation with Cano and I’m sure the Yankees have some parameters they’re comfortable with that they want to stick to. If playing up the budget in the press gets that for them, it’s actually a shrewd move.

We’ll see if their tune changes slightly after Cano gets re-upped which I’m hoping is soon.

  54. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

    Chip,

Its a log jam right now because they are doing more and more patch work on it and basically taking loans on 40 man spots with all their 60 day DLing. Like they could DFA Francisco for sure and add a catcher to the 40 man, but if they add Murphy thats a spot you CANNOT give back. And then you have to DL stewart and bring up an OFer as well.

  55. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 1:44 pm

The current log jam will resolve itself in the offseason, but thats not really the point since 40 man shenanigans are at their biggest problem during the season when you need to actually be creating a good roster.

  56. mick May 17th, 2013 at 1:45 pm

If Nix did what he was supposed to do in that spot, yes, he can bat 2nd.
This is a makeshift team, would you rather Cano up 2nd?
They would have walked him in that spot.
With Nix on 1st with a walk he should have had easily, they would have had to pitch to Cano.
It made me doubt the baseball IQ of Nix and Girardi for not giving the take sign.

  57. jacksquat May 17th, 2013 at 1:45 pm

I only root against Montero when he is playing against the Yankees, just like any other player.

I’m surprised Randy being so anti-Republican would resort to “with us or against us” tactics of division.

Negative comments against Montero tend to be objective and/or just a retort to all the so far undeserved Montero adulation.

I just don’t know how you protect against deals like ARods. At the time of the deal, circumstances were so different that you could understand the Yankees taking the risk that, of course, at the tail end of the deal he’d be nothing like he was at the time he signed the deal. But they couldn’t have known all of “this” would unfold as it has. It was a greedy deal, on both sides, but I think the Yankees were willing to live with the down side, because the up side had the potential to be so lucrative.

As for Tex, I find that more complicated, but if Tex’s hitting had not changed so drastically average wise so fast (and ability to use all fields), you can justify it.

On the one hand you don’t want them to lose out on a player because there’s always someone who will give the extra year or pay the extra million these days, but you don’t want the future constricted if things go downhill too much sooner than you realistically anticipate it.

Cano himself may not ultimately be worth the contract he gets, but the Yankees can’t really afford to let him go, as a homegrown all-star (even a flawed one).

You knew all along what Hal was up to with this 189. It is not set in stone, but for now is a bargaining chip to stop spending ridiculous dollars to overpay for hype. Sure it has worked in the past, but today’s numbers are ludicrous Of course it’s part of the Cano negotiations but we knew that all along. The disparity in assets set us apart but maybe its time to try and get smarter and see if it works. It does make more room for the kiddies if their spots aren’t taken by overpaid ego trippers.

  63. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 1:53 pm

You guys are right, we can just DFA Benny Fresh. I forgot Granderson is back up so we have 4 outfielders.

  64. Doreen May 17th, 2013 at 1:53 pm

I think once Adams shows he can hit consistently, he’ll be moved up in the order, with Nix being back down where he belongs. Nix had actually been semi-productive lately, so I understand the move. I mean, there’s really not much choice, and everyone was clamoring for Cano to be taken out of the #2 hole.

It’s encouraging that Adams has a hit in each of his first two games, has an RBI and a run scored, and almost had a second RBI last night (yeah, I know almost doesn’t count). :)

  65. Doreen May 17th, 2013 at 1:54 pm

    Doreen,

They have to take risks like this sometimes and you just hope the evaluation process is sound.

Tex’s contract being an albatross I blame on the player, not the Yankees. The fact that against RHP which he faces more often than not he’s a below average hitter is not what the Yankees signed up for. He’s not old yet. He should still be performing at a very high level.

The Arod thing is a bit on the Yankees. I guess they were completely unaware he was chemically enhanced or they just didn’t care when they gave him that deal. But signing any player until he’s 42 is just insane. Part of me thinks maybe they knew he used and were hoping he’d keep it up under wraps and have a late career surge like Bonds did.

The interesting thing about how the game has changed is the Yankees opportunity to dole out those kind of mega-deals is becoming smaller as teams are locking these guys up.

I don’t think we’ll see many 27 year old stars making it to free agency. They’re all going to be on the wrong side of 30 and signing them until 40 is going to become less of a thing in the game I’m guessing.

That’s why I hope the Yankees get Cano for 6-7 years. If they pay him into his 40′s it’s not good business, but at the same token they can’t afford to lose him.

But for all the flack that long term deals get, the one’s we signed with Jeter, Mussina, Matsui, O’Neil, Bernie, Mo, Jorge, Tino, Sheff (to an extent), CC (thus far) all worked out pretty well for us.

It’s the eyesores like Arod’s current deal, Tex’s deal, Giambi’s, Pavano, Igawa, etc. that knee jerk long term deals are deadly.

Getting them wrong are deadly but they shouldn’t be to the Yankees who can make the most money and cover mistakes better than any other team in the league.

I’m in agreement with those contending that Montero will ever be more than a back up catcher, he has no natural skills for the position. Frankly he looks more like an NFL guard, he must weigh at least 260!

However, his “position” was and will always be hitter and as I recall the Mariners had a very average defensive third baseman in the same mold who might be a borderline HOF’r.

Perhaps the Montero judgements should be adjourned until the right GM understands this. If the defensive pressure is removed his hitting skills may come to the fore.

True on the ARod deal, as I say, greed on both sides fueled that one. Who knows what they suspected at the time. All of MLB turned a blind eye to everything. The problem is, ARod the personality is such a – well, let’s just say he’s not Mr. Congeniality. Hard worker, yes. Baseball smart, yes. Heck, apparently he’s a good teammate, too. But he rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Interesting that the Yankees are avoiding guys with abrasive personalities, I think.

I don’t understand Tex not trying to change things. It’s not like he never was able to hit to all fields before. I was a huge fan of Tex, and I still am, and I’ll never poo-poo 30 HRs and 100 ribbies. But he was a more complete player before.

And absolutely – there will be no really viable FA market, at least not as it was. With other teams being able to afford to keep the best of their best, it’s more difficult. There will not be the long-term contracts to the over 30 set that we’ve seen, but it will take willpower on the part of the owners/GMs. And it has to be seen as not being collusion. :(

I think it’s interesting that a lot more of the older players have to wait until almost the beginning of spring training to get a contract. At least the “fringy” guys.

  78. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 2:09 pm

    I don’t know much about baseball. I’m a fan.

But when I saw Montero hit for us when he was called up, I saw a hitter this lineup was craving/lacking. He took outside breaking pitches to right center field with power and authority that our millionaires whiffed at on a nightly basis.

Getting traded to Seattle from here had to have sucked for the kid. That park is bad. That lineup is pretty bad. It’s like going from Broadway to community theater.

I think at some point he’s going to hit, but if he doesn’t, it’ll be very sad because the potential was/is there and seeing it get wasted is depressing.

I don’t think if he stayed with the Yankees he’d be hitting .200. I think he’d be closer to .300 in this lineup and this ballpark.

    When do numbers lie?

When you see the lackluster at bats and horrible swings Cano is having.

This offense is weak to begin with and if he doesn’t take charge we might see ourselves at the bottom of the east not the top!

Joe G. should forget his alternate right and left strategy and bat his best hitter third no matter who is pitching.

Off his first two starts Adams looks like he might fill the bill in the second hole.

He has a very solid and disciplined approach and while he’ll not be a gold glover at third has thus far looked more than adequate.

Actually he caught 56 games last year or about 40% of the games which is not bad for a 22yr old who is not a defensive stud. BTW he had a pretty good catcher’s era and in 488 innings caught had 3 errors and 7 passed balls with about a 20% caught stealing rate. Those to me are
#’s that can be improved upon with hard work.

The one question I have with Jesus is he seems or seemed to have an attitude of entitlement that I think he needs to drop. Examples are ARod having to tell him he should be out taking early batting practice with the team when he first came up and him showing up to spring training this season out of shape and overweight. Maybe not having immediate success will cause him to change.

For the most part he’s never really struggled and in fact since turning pro as a 17 yr old all he’s done is knocked the cover off the ball.

  90. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 2:27 pm

I’m still hoping Cano’s splits even out a little.. but no matter what, there’s no justification for keeping him and trying to make it under that budget. (And I love Robbie and as a proud card carrying member of Team Greedy would give him whatever he wanted if I were in charge.)

  91. Tar May 17th, 2013 at 2:27 pm

“Assuming Cano’s contract lands him about $26/year the Yankees would be far better off spending that money on two or three players.”

The amount per year should not deter the Yankees from re-signing Cano, he’s that good.

But the length of the deal is another story.

  92. I Am Winning May 17th, 2013 at 2:27 pm

In regards to the expanded replay, I agree with it depending how far they take it. Reviewing every play will be more accurate, but extend the games by double their normal time. I don’t mind watching baseball for 6 hours but for most, that just isn’t going to cut it. Financially too, it would be a burden on base all teams, MLB organization, and the union.

Adding on to that, they need to fix two issues at second base. One is players jumping feet first to 2nd base. Faking to kick someone in the jugular to he hurries the throw shouldn’t be a tactic that baseball allows. Why not pretend to punch the first baseman when he is about to field the ball? Or why not have a pitcher pretend to trip the runner going to first, so he fails and is out? The feet first in the air sliding needs to stop. That will speed games up slightly, because more guys will be out without having the pressure of jumping out of the way of metal spikes aimed toward your face.

The other issue is the neighborhood call. Umpires need to be told to not allow that. A guy could be safe at first if the second baseman actually stepped on the bag. I’m sure that has happened countless times. Allowing the neighborhood call shows sloppy umpiring and sloppy enforcing by MLB. While this will extend the game a little, since more guys will be called safe at first and second, it would be countered by my previous suggestion.

Runner running into the Catcher stays, we need some excitement after all!

    Any opinions?

  93. comnsnse May 17th, 2013 at 2:30 pm

    Chip re: your Montero comments.

In 2001 a 13th. round draft pick, a pudgy guy with no real position skills made his MLB debut.

He proceeded to astound both his organization and all of baseball by hitting for average, 37 taters with I believe 130 rbi’s that year.

Playing three different positions to see where they could hide his defense, which in succeeding years has improved immensely at first base.

The player’s name is Albert Pujols with whom for years Montero’s hitting potential has been equated with.

Albert was 21, Jesus is 23 and imo you don’t lose that hitting skill overnight, and any organization should show patience.

He may never come close to Pujols accomplishments but I would not dismiss him as a bust at 23!

    Shame Spencer,

    It just wouldn’t entirely work.

They would need guys upstairs to review every play several times. When one of them catches something wrong, let’s say a strike, an they determine the wrong call was made with 100% certainty, several pitches could’ve been thrown already. And you can’t stop every borderline pitch for verification.

Might as well get rid of the home plate umpire in that case, and use computer technology to automatically make the calls. That would actually speed up the game. But also change the feel of baseball, in my opinion.

  102. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 2:41 pm

THe thing with review is that you are specifically NOT reviewing every play. 95% of baseball plays are no doubters. The ball beats the runner by a mile, a catch is safely made. You are only reviewing the edge cases and those can be done in seconds. You simply have the Head Ump call up to the Booth, ‘call time’ for a second and viola.

Getting all the calls right in the field and on the bases is very much within the grasp of major league baseball. Strike zone is harder because umpires are going to be more against it.

Give them google glasses tied to pitchFX/trackman that calls a uniform strikezone and be done with it

  103. champ809 May 17th, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Ben Zobrist can’t hold Robbie’s jockstrap. You don not improve your team by replacing 1 of the 5 best players in the sport with slightly above league average players in volume just to say we spread the $ around.

The Yanks will sign Cano and then look to get value on the pitching side of the roster by replacing the $’s lost with Andy, Hiroki and Mo leaving and taking about $40MM off the books with cheap in house options like Pineda and Phelps and the Marshalls and Warrens.

They will be encouraged when they look at both the performance of the kids we’re promoting like Claiborne and Phelps and Adams if he in fact is sucessful as well as the Young guys around the league that we developed that are having success in other places like AJax, IPK as well as Quintana, Zach McCallister, Clippard, Kontos and Melancon to name a few.

The Yankees brand is built on legacy, superstar players and performers. Cano is homeschooled and satisfies all the criteria and as such will be re-signed to finish his career his as hopefully the next great Yankee taking the baton from Jeter….as it should be.

    I Am Winning May 17th, 2013 at 2:36 pm

    Shame Spencer,

    It just wouldn’t entirely work.

They would need guys upstairs to review every play several times. When one of them catches something wrong, let’s say a strike, an they determine the wrong call was made with 100% certainty, several pitches could’ve been thrown already. And you can’t stop every borderline pitch for verification.

Might as well get rid of the home plate umpire in that case, and use computer technology to automatically make the calls. That would actually speed up the game. But also change the feel of baseball, in my opinion.

    ————————–

#1 – They’ve already said they won’t review balls and strikes.

#2 – Baseball is the slowest moving game ever. I actually try to see how much I can get done in between pitches and it’s fairly amazing.

The next time you watch a game on TV, take note of how many reviews take place between pitches. They don’t review every single play, only the close foul/fair balls, HRs, etc.

People are seriously underestimating technology. My generation is not much for patience. We get sh*t done. If my browser takes more than 5 seconds to reload I’m ready to throw my computer out a window.

Yes… a reaction that is apparently justifiable in the eyes of some, making the whole thing more personality driven than fact driven.

People really just need to leave the personal nonsense out of this. Every time the kid’s name comes up it turns into some rehashing of year old drama.

With all the injuries to the team this year. I’m just waiting for a member of
the 25 man roster to injure himself as he enters the team hotel or his own home/apartment.

Pettitte might need 15 days to heal his back. At his age, would take a very minor spasm to keep him from missing a start.
His next scheduled start is Tuesday. Seems so soon after experiencing the spasms.

  108. Chip May 17th, 2013 at 2:47 pm

    Responding to Champ and comnsense:

    1. Catcher ERA is a silly stat. Seattle has good pitchers. If you put Montero on the Rockies his ERA would have been much higher.

    2. I’m not dismissing Montero as a bust but there are a couple of things before comparing him to Pujols. Albert wasn’t a bad defensive player. He was moved because of injuries he sustained throwing the ball. Your better comparison in that regard would have been Miguel Cabrera who has been a prodigious offensive player who is also a bad fielder.

But the real difference between Montero and those other two players is that they hit. Cabrera and Pujols both raked the ball right from go…Montero has not shown anywhere near enough offensive ability as a major leaguer to force Eric Wedge or any other manager to find a way to keep his bat in the lineup despite his glove. As a matter of fact, his offense when he’s not catching has been worse than when he is catching.

So what you’re saying is that the Yankees would be better off giving a huge contract to a player in his 30′s that carries him through his late 30s and possibly early 40s? Because that has worked out really well for them to this point?

  110. luis May 17th, 2013 at 2:56 pm

    Sorry to cut in….

The perceived divide that exist in this blog has nothing to do with Montero. It does have to do with personalities, but not in the way you think… For example, I have very good relationships with guys like Jacksquat, Chip even Y’s and Bret ( now Buster ), all pro trade proponents. I think Unknown was pro trade ( you can correct me ).There is no secret on where I stand on the issue. The divide has to do more on control or lack of it of the blog. Between those that want to dictate what should be discussed and what shouldn’t, and those that believe that everyone is entitled to their own positiions. And then there is a third faction, those that feed on conflict.

Actually interestingly enough Jesus’s #’s as a 22yr old starting C are nearly identical to Miggy’s initial 300 PA’s which is a more apples to apples comparison.

I’m not saying the Yanks should sign Robbie to a 10yr deal but I’d have no problem going 7 maybe even 8 with him if that’s where the market is. As far as how that’s worked out in the past it’s been great in the case of Jeter and terrible in the case of ARod obviously. I’d be willing to bet that Robbie is more like Jeet than ARod and believe that he will be an elite top5-10 offensive player for the next 5-6 years at least. He also is like Gehrig in the sense that he plays everyday.

    1) G Love is right… There is no plan other than take care of the season at hand… Most youngsters are playing out of necessity, since most regulars are old ( including OS adquisitions, Youk and Hafner are on the DL or hurt not by chance but by very well recorded physical conditions )

    2) The above has force them as some posters said to rely on rookies, which is good

    1. You keep focusing on how Montero hit as a catcher. Given how poorly he hit as a non-catcher wouldn’t you think if he was any good back there Eric Wedge would have said “let’s leave Montero back there where his bat is doing us the most good.”

    2. You’re assuming that Cano would take a shorter term contract why? Why should/would he take less money or years than say Pujols or Prince – both of whom play a position that isn’t as critical as Robbie does? Especially when both the Dodgers and Nationals will come after him. I’m predicting 9 years $26/season.

I too could say I’m not all that surprised by it but my opinion mostly comes from our inability to generate a lot of runs.. I’m just surprised anyone would expect to lose a series to the M’s when they just haven’t played very good ball this season so far.

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    Shame ~

Sorry for the belated response – started this hours ago and then got distracted by that thing called “work” (hate it when that happens!)

Granted, the M’s overall record isn’t great (although, currently, it’s good enough for second place in the ALW ~ baby steps ;-) ) but, they have been playing much better of late and have gone 5-0-1 in their last six series (w/ a 2.08 ERA over that span). Not sure I would go so far as to say I expected them to take the series but, I felt pretty confident it was possible (which is certainly progress!)

    re: the M’s bullpen . . .
other than Charlie Furbush ;( my expectations for them is pretty high these days, given the M’s are now 19-1 in games when leading after six innings.

Who knows how the season will shake out but, it’s been a lot more fun lately and I plan to enjoy it while it lasts :)

  119. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 3:13 pm

Bottom line is this team is still struggling to score.
    - Dead last in MLB in productive outs
    - 3rd to last in MLB in getting a runner from 3rd home with less than 2 outs
    - 4th to last in getting a runner on 2nd with no out to 3rd base
-79 runs in 22 home games is really bad.
-Only three runs in seven of the last 11 games.

To clarify this is not a case of panicking. (Some people might jump to this conclusion.) But it is stating facts. And the overall fact is they need to score more. That is the truth like it or not.

Now go out tonight and score 15 runs so people can say “See no problem.” Do it, they need to start doing it.

My point in any of this is that strictly based on his performance he does not, at this time, appear to be a major league catcher.

I put up his numbers as they compared to Chris Stewart because no one (myself included) wants to see Chris Stewart play. Yet this season he has been the better catcher both at the plate and behind it.

Cano already figures prominently in the list of New York Yankees player records. I think I saw a graphic recently stating that he was now No. 13 or 14 for most doubles hit.

There’s no way either or the player or the club are going to jeopardize that. Cano likes wearing Pinstripes and the organization sees him as their future leader/ambassador. Now Boras is out of the equation, I have no doubt they will agree terms on a new contract amicably.

  125. comnsnse May 17th, 2013 at 3:24 pm

Everybody knew from the start that the pitching would need to be outstanding for us to have a chance… It has, even though the overall stats paint a whole different case ( 12th in MLB )… Our offense on the other hand has performed as expected ( 27th overall )… We have outperformed our projected W-L record, in no small part because we have been very successful in one run games (8-2)… The question is ” Are we going to be able to this the whole season” or “When does this team goes down to Earth”.

Personally, I think they will get to the PS because those overall pitching stats are somewhat skewed… And it will be our pitching that takes us there, not the offense.

Champ@2;49, who is Clippard has done a good job as a set up guy but Melancon has been traded several times and is doing his best work this year. with one decent year in Houston.

Kennedy has been above average and I suspect the Yankees had Hughes rated higher at the time of the trade and made Kennedy available.

Jackson is the one they gave up on too soon but this is the nature of the Yanks and HRs. Jackson is a better fielder, baserunner and over time will display better batting averages and 15-20 hrs. regularly.

    It was a bad deal!

As for Quintana, wasn’t he some Mexican revolutionary? Is this the mystery question of the day, “Who is Quintana”? ;)

More time is spent discussing an ex-player than any other topic, it seems. No one, and I say no one, knows what kind of player Montero will be. He may improve or he may not. He may regress or he may not.

The future is beyond anyone’s knowledge becasue it hasn’t happened yet. Give your forecasts, but couching it in terms of certainty is absurd for any side of the argument.

On a separate topic, I don’t think it would kill Murphy or runin his development to have him in the bigs for a couple weeks. We might even learn he is capable of helping. We know Wilson would be another huge offensive hole with his .179 BA is AAA.

    Chip

#1 We are talking about Eric Wedge. I mean he had Iwakuma pitching out of the ‘pen until the all star break last year because he thought he had 4 better pitchers. Montero is a work in progress behind the plate and his ceiling is probably league average D at best. I highlight his hatting when he catches because that is when he’s in his natural element.

Most of the best position players in the sport talk about how much they hate DH’ing because they can’t figure out a routine that helps them manage all the sitting around doing nothing…imagine for 22yr old kid.

You’re assuming that some team will be willing to go 10yrs for robbie or any player at this point. i don’t think the 10 year deals are out there anymore for players over the age of say 27. Maybe a Trout or Harper will get 10yr extensions but they will come when they are 23-25yrs old not 30. I think that teams will go up to 8yrs for robbie and if he has the kindo of year I think he will up to 27MM per…8/$215- 220mil

Joe from LI and G. Love I agree that Gardner is not going to be what he was made out to be by some (but you both knew that). I’m also with agreement with you G. Love on this being Hughes last year. I will say that I’m OK with him in CF one last year in 2014 if he is flanked by solid corner OF’s (Wells and Choo for example) and shares time with Ichiro. The only caveat is if they can do what Joe from LI suggests and package Gardner in a trade. I’d like to trade Gardner, Hughes and Joba at the deadline. That will solve the 40 man and Cashman should be able to get good value on them regardless of the 40 man crunch. There will be multiple suitors, at least one will relent in order to obtain the pitching they need or the speed/defense they want. Not every GM can collude and force a bad trade due to the logjam on the 40.

It can’t really be said that there is no plan. It can be said that one cannot tell if there is a plan; it can be said that it’s hard to tell whether they have a plan. The fact is they may indeed have a plan; we just aren’t privy to it. It’s also possible that there is in fact no plan at all, true. But that’s highly unlikely.

    =============================

    Doreen,

They have a plan ( If you can call that a plan ), which is fill positions of need with short term options and pray that the prospects pan out by 2014-15… After committing so many mistakes in the past IMHO ( bad trades that lead to this gap in talent, overestimating their offensive output and aging of their core, and underestimating their pitching depth potential), they had two choices:

    1) Do what they have done… Which in turn would force them to used their youth eventually as it has.

    2) Go young from the start and save some money in the process and start the rebuild right now.

Again, my beef has to do with that we didn’t have to be on this position in the first place

  147. Chip May 17th, 2013 at 3:48 pm

    Champ…

Albert Pujols was the same age as Cano and had a worse injury history and got a 10 year deal from the Angels.

The Dodgers or Nats won’t hesitate to drop 10 years at Cano’s feet.

Tyler Clippard has been 1 of the top 5 setup men in baseball the last 3-4 yrs. IPK finished 3rd in the CY voting 2yrs ago and is the ace of a playoff caliber team. As far as Melancon is concerned being traded is being wanted and the Red Sox were a joke last year. Think they want him back right now?

Quintana as in Jose Quintana SP for the WhiteSox who was probably our best minor league pitcher 2yrs ago and when let him sign with the White Sox and as a rookie last year was easily their #3 behind Sale and Peavy…that guy

McCallister is right now at least the current #2 on the Cleveland staff, he of the 2.68 era leading the staff in his 1st full season with the team.

  152. Chip May 17th, 2013 at 3:51 pm

    Champ,

Montero’s not a good defensive catcher. What’s more, the Mariners have a prospect coming up behind him who is not only a good hitter but a good fielder as well in Zunino.

He’ll likely be ready for the majors around late July so my guess is that Montero had either better get some life into his bat or he’s going to find himself spending August in Tacoma.

IMO Pujols will be the last over 30 player to sign a 10yr contract. He’s already considered to be underperforming his contract and all that’s been talked about since with him are injuries, decline and how many years are still left on his deal.

ARod’s demise and to a smaller extent Pujols performance since signing his deal have all but killed the 31-32yr star player finding 10 yr deals waiting for him in FA.

Oh and one last thing G. Love, I agree with your connection that the 189 is just a ploy to keep down costs with Cano but also with all GM’s in trade talks and free agents. If 189 can be reached, it’s a bonus. If not, then it served to influence negotiations in a way that’s difficult to measure. But you still have to appreciate negotiation tactics. Now if fans want to cast doubt on the ability of a corporation of the Yankees magnitude to attract negotiation gurus then I just have to LOL. As if the folks at Goldman Sachs don’t know how to negotiate. As if these millionaires and billionaires are just clumsy. Assuming your premise is correct and no one gives Cano 10 years. 8 or 9 years aren’t any better. You’re still paying a guy for years 37, 38, 39 and 40. The best you’re going to get is 3 years at his current level of production and then 5 or 6 years of steady decline.

  160. yankee21 May 17th, 2013 at 3:58 pm

Regarding this series NY better expect TOR to come out with revenge from getting swept a couple weeks back. It won’t be an easy series.

Regarding Cano- obviously an outstanding ball player and durable today. That said he will be 31 when 2014 season starts and I think he is going to regress big time in the next couple of years. We are already seeing this trend against LHP over the last 1+ seasons. Really anything much beyond 6/140, I’d let him walk (it really is too late to trade him and not NY’ style anyway).

Regarding Gardner, it is clear he lacks good baseball instincts and is more of a tools player. He is a good contributor as part of a supporting cast but has not become the consistent high impact weapon that I had hoped he would. I’ve lowered my expectations of him as a guy who will hit ~.260, have an OBP ~ .340, and play good defense while at the same time steal less bases and bunt less then he should, while striking out more then he should. He is not an AS but IMO he is still a starter in most ML outfields if performs along these lines.

  161. champ809 May 17th, 2013 at 4:00 pm

    Chip

Zunino, while better than Jesus is no Bench back there either and his performance with the bat in the minors hasn’t been as good as Jesus’s was. Zunino was a college player and as such should be a fast mover in the minors. He’s currently hitting .215 in the PCL and he’s a year younger than Montero. Montero would have had video game stats hitting in the pacific coast league out on the west coast.

  162. luis May 17th, 2013 at 4:00 pm

About Gardner… I agree with all of you, he is not our long term solution for the position… The moment he gets expensive would be the time to cut ties ( 2014 I think )

About Hughes, it wouldn’t hurt to see what can be obtained by trading him… I think they should have extended him last season, I think it is too late now… So I rather get a good more advanced prospect than a draft pick at this point.

  163. randy l. May 17th, 2013 at 4:00 pm

You’re assumption is that he’ll decline beginning at age 34 but Jeter for example had 1 of his best seasons at age 38.

Again I would prefer to go 8 years max with Robbie which means paying him til he’s age 39 if I’m also correct and he’s 1 of the best hitters in the sport for the next 6 years and he avoids major injury then for me he’s satisfied his contract and the last 2 yrs of the deal although he maybe in decline he may still be a league average or better hitter ( .280 ish/20HR/.340ish obp ) DH kinda like David Ortiz are acceptable for me given that we’ll be talking about a future HOF’er.
Actually Paul O’Neill is a great comp for this scenario.

  179. Niblick May 17th, 2013 at 4:12 pm

Stewie will be day to day for about 10 days, during which period they will play short handed and Nixie will be the backup, after which the team will finally decide they need to DL him.

  180. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 4:13 pm

    Bret,

I seriously didn’t consider that Hal could be using 189 as an edge in Cano negotiations. I really thought the whole time that he was preparing the fans for him slashing payroll and fielding a cost effective team that reaps the biggest profits.

I’m open to the possibility that it’s a strategy to keep the Yankees edge in negotiations. But if it comes at the cost of losing players we shouldn’t lose and the cap is the goal, that all goes out the window.

As for Gardner, he really feels like the OF version of Hughes to me. We all see this uber player in them but it doesn’t translate to the field consistently.

I honestly don’t know what we’d get for him in a trade and quite frankly, they need him next season so I don’t think he’s getting dealt unless the AA OF’ers push him out.

    g.love-

strong honest opinions make for good discussion.

i think one question that has surfaced is just how important is it for a catcher to be good defensively or rather how good he has to be. at what point are there diminishing returns in relation to offense?

giradi’s views are clearly different than mine or wedge’s for example. but i thing it’s not an easy thing to prove which way is best. i think there is some preference involved.

it’s clear that girardi’s preference has changed the catcher position organizationally.

  184. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 4:16 pm

    Odds,

I think the reason Girardi throws “Y’s” at the end of every name is to convince the fans and media that all these guys are kids. Nixy and Stewie are just a couple of plucky youngsters who battled through the Yankees system to get here!

    randy,

Without question has Girardi’s preference changed the position.

That being said, Gene Michael is still in the org. He knows Yankee history and how out best runs are built around catchers who can hit and play good D.

With Sanchez and Murphy, they have a chance to get a player like that back there if they advance.

What will be telling is if Girardi hazes those guys if he’s still around to and goes with a career catch & throw guy over them. If that happens, there’s no hope.

Someone in the org has to remind him that having a catcher who can hit in either league is having your foot on the throat of your opponent most nights.

  188. G. Love May 17th, 2013 at 4:24 pm

    mick,

What you see as “hedging” other people can see as changing their mind. After a year or two of data, evidence, what have you, you can start to amend an opinion. I don’t think that’s out of line.

I thought Gardner was going to be a monster player here and I’m starting to come to the realization that you need serious offense in the corners to carry him. If he gets hot and plays to his potential, aren’t I allowed to be happy about it and talk differently about it?

When it comes to Montero I based my opinion from the get go off of his call up where he looked like a more advanced hitter than we had in the lineup. Yes, it was a small sample, but he was great for us and energized a portion of the fanbase who were tired of the hero swingers.

I don’t think he’s done as a player, but I don’t think it’s ever happening in Seattle for him. They have the AAA C and he’s not hitting enough.

That said, I won’t be surprised to see him hitting well on some team in the future. He has the ability. I just look at him as a kid who got the rug pulled out from under him in that trade and never recovered. He’s still young, so he has time.

    ———————————————
Jeter had what is considered to be a “historically great” age 38 season (even though his OPS+ was only 115). The term historically great is used because it is something that very rarely happens. To expect Cano to have a similar trent of performance is, in my opinion, setting expectations way to high.

To say O’Neill is a great comp, you need to realize that after his age 35 season he was not much more then an average major league oitfielder.

It takes more courage to admit you’re wrong than to continue to insist you’re right. You start looking ridiculous.

Acceptance is a better place to be than cognitive dissonance.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Gaming pc’s aren’t as difficult as you might maybe believe, and creating your very own gaming pc is not as tricky as a whole lot of folks would make you consider. Because you by now have a distinct software in head when constructing your individual gaming machine, there are truly only three main elements you have to need to worry about, and every little thing else is truly secondary: the processor, video clip card, and RAM.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
