Put Wells back in and it almost looks like a lineup!

  2. mick May 20th, 2013 at 3:42 pm

5 straight leftys at the top?
Have to check Balts pen for leftys…

  3. Warning Track Power May 20th, 2013 at 3:42 pm

Adams & Romine starting again. Has a nice ring to it.
I think Romine has the best opportunity anybody can ask for to unseat
Stewart or Cervelli right now. The more games he plays, the more comfortable he can feel
at the plate and behind the plate.
That could translate into a catcher the Yankees have to keep on the team and not demote
    to the minors.

  4. bruceb May 20th, 2013 at 3:44 pm

    Why?

  5. Doreen May 20th, 2013 at 3:44 pm

    Noreaster -

    Thanks for the advice!

  6. Nick in SF May 20th, 2013 at 3:46 pm

bruceb, pretty exciting finish to the EPL yesterday! Not the same type of drama as we saw a year ago, with final-moments suspense at the very top of the table, but still lots of fun and a happy ending for Arsenal supporters and not so much for the Spurs.

  7. mick May 20th, 2013 at 3:49 pm

If Brignac shows much it could make Nunez expendable.
A package of Nova, Joba and him could bring something back.

  8. Russell Munson May 20th, 2013 at 3:50 pm

I don’t see a lot of value in a package of three disappointments.

  9. blake May 20th, 2013 at 3:50 pm

Adams back in good…..wells out not good

  10. Russell Munson May 20th, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Wells has played in 41 of the 42 games so far.

  11. Russell Munson May 20th, 2013 at 3:52 pm

But 2 of those games were pinch-hit appearances.

Yes because teams are lining up to acquire suspect fielding short stops who show a propensity for getting hurt and fat middle relievers?

  13. CountryClub May 20th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Yeah but he just had a day off and he’s getting another one on Thursday. I’m honestly not complaining about the lineup; guys need days off. But with Hafner and Granderson back, they finally have something that resembles a ML batting order when they’re all playing.

  14. Chip May 20th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

I know Wells has played a lot, but if Buck has any left handed relief options the Yankees are boned.

So Mattingly should be punished for not being on a better team?
    *********

and the ONE year they made it to the postseason he was great but the team failed him. He hit .417 with an OPS of 1.148

  17. The Genius Maker May 20th, 2013 at 3:58 pm

The Genius Maker May 20th, 2013 at 3:56 pm
from the ESPN article…”This is the launch pad for maybe the single most devastating pitch in baseball history — Mariano Rivera’s cutter — and has been for just about ever.”
    **********

MAYBE? Sure I have a blog called the Genius Maker and it is a tribute to Rivera who makes his managers look like a genius, but maybe? The man has thrown ONE speed and the best hitters in the world fail against him more than against any other closer in the history of the game…throwing that one speed. It is clearly the best pitch ever because no pitcher, ever anywhere at any time in the major leagues has ever been good throwing one speed pitch every time.

    I think you’re reaching there.
Brignac was released by the Rays & again by the Rockies. The kid is not a top prospect
and is basically here until Nunez gets well.
Nunez is still the #1 SS on the team, until Jeter returns. Meaning there is very little room for
Birgnac on the 25 man roster when players are healthy.

  19. fantasygame101 May 20th, 2013 at 4:02 pm

better get freddy early and often or else matusz will be a factor.

  20. bruceb May 20th, 2013 at 4:04 pm

Yes, somehow the Gunners always seem to finish ahead of their arch rivals, Spurs. As usual, Arsenal did just enough to win at Newcastle and Tottenham fell short, despite Gareth Bale’s superb goal. He’s such a great player, it’s a shame he won’t be gracing the Champions League next season (unless, of course, he joins Real Madrid or another of the top European sides).

  21. theREALkevin May 20th, 2013 at 4:04 pm

Whoa, just now saw they got Brignac. Always thought he had some talent but he hasn’t really been able to put it together. Hopefully he can contribute, they won’t be asking him to do too much.

  22. Noreaster May 20th, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Doreen, (and of course, behind home!)…Enjoy!

  23. UnKnown May 20th, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Shouldn’t take much to beat the Chief. But this one has reverse lock written all over it.

Can’t take the game tonight for granted at all.

  24. bruceb May 20th, 2013 at 4:07 pm

Don’t get Wells sitting after an off-day. If he’s healthy, the only two reasons I can think of are (a) he has bad numbers against Freddy or (b) Girardi wants a right-handed power option off the bench.

The Genius Maker doesn’t make me feel any more like a Genius than I already did this morning

  26. randy l. May 20th, 2013 at 4:09 pm

    genius maker-

here’s a story you might like because it involves catching and mariano .

carl taylor was the yankee game BP pitcher and also a bullpen catcher from 1990 -1996. we were good friends and we threw each year in sarasota getting his arm ready for the season. he was teaching me how to throw good BP in the process.
one day he was getting pissed because i was dropping my elbow down a bit when i threw harder. so he got fairly close and gave instruction and told me to air it out to him. i hesitated because i was like 35 feet from him. he looked at me in disgust and said,”i catch rivera , and you think you’re going to throw something i can’t catch.”.

carl was an interesting guy. boog powell’s half brother, and he hit about .348 one year with the pirates.

he also was a barber, and cut mattingly’s hair that time george and mattingly got into it over mattingy’s long hair.

  27. Rich in NJ May 20th, 2013 at 4:09 pm

I like this lineup better than yesterday’s.

Wells is sitting because they haven’t faced the current Ichiro reality. Unless the current reality changes, they will have to at some point.

  28. Russell Munson May 20th, 2013 at 4:11 pm

“I know Wells has played a lot, but if Buck has any left handed relief options the Yankees are boned.”

O’s have two lefties in Patton and Matusz. And you can’t really pinch-hit Wells for Overbay since there is no other first baseman on the roster.

  29. Hassey May 20th, 2013 at 4:15 pm

    Ichiro goes deep twice tonight

  40. charlestonchew May 20th, 2013 at 4:36 pm

Lyle Overbay is hitting kind of like a cleanup hitter. Sort of. Dude has an almost .800 OPS (.772). Good enough for 17th among major league first basemen. Not too shabby for a replacement player on a replacement team!

  41. luis May 20th, 2013 at 4:41 pm

  42. champ809 May 20th, 2013 at 4:46 pm

I don’t think that teams would characterize that package as a package of disappointments. I think that team would see the upside in that package in the sense that Nova is a guy who has cut his teeth in the toughest division in the sport and is 30-15 with 4 pitches and is 94-97, Joba we all know what his upside could be as either a starter or potential closer with his velo back at 98-99.

If you look around the league at what teams are running out at SS these days, even though some good ones have shown up this season in Gregorious, Segura and Andrelton it is still overall a weak crop from an offensive standpoint. With nuney showing a much improved D his hitting/offensive potential profiles as above average. If Brenden Ryan, Pete Kozma and a few others I could name are everyday players in this league then Nuney certainly has value.

I’m not sure that that package would get you back an elite player and as such you may be better off keeping them.

“Lyle Overbay is hitting cleanup. Just take a minute and let that sink in”

    heck yeah!

  44. BD (Boston Dave) May 20th, 2013 at 4:51 pm

small sample, but Overbay is also OPSing at 250 points higher against finesse pitchers so far this season (vs power pitchers)

I see some extra base hits for Lyle tonight.

(per baseball reference – Power pitchers are in the top third of the league in strikeouts plus walks. Finesse are in the bottom third of the league in strikeouts plus walks. )

If that platoon split continues for another month or so, I don’t they’ll play him unless Levine issues an order (I have no idea if he ever has or if he would, but I at some point, that lack of production would be too hard to ignore).

    Randy,

Although I didn’t suffered from that bubble, I did learned from it… In the early 2000′s I already thought that there was a bubble in the real estate business in the US… I knew that it was bound to burst sooner or later, so I prepared myself for it in advance… One of the things that really prepares you is having to deal with such a volatile environment like the one we have to deal down here… I mean, here you can’t plan for more than a year… So your business have to remain nimble in order to be able to adapt to the constant changes ( regulatory, fiscal, political, you name it )… I always prepare for the worst

I don’t think they’ll actively shop Nunez. Without Jeter, it’s still basically open auditions at that position. It’s an extremely difficult position to groom or fill regularly at the major league level. Ain’t just the Yanks.

I usually don’t slobber all over other teams’ players. There’s plenty of folks who do that here. But the O’s are really lucky to have that kid playing so well right now. In a ways, it’s like winning the lotto. Yes, I think Machado will eventually to move over to shortstop in due time.

Yup, a 4 digit 1100 plus ops. versus this guy in 19 PA’s. Joe’s so called binder consists of righty versus lefty matchups. He has no concept of complex platooning as patented by Stengel in the ’50′s. The Yankee teams since he got to NY have one in spite of him.
Other then this year the talent and money spent has been enormous. This season so far I write off to even blind squirrels finding nuts now and then.
