Pregame notes: Francisco’s time comes to an end

Ben Francisco

Ben Francisco’s time has come and gone.

For the time being, the Yankees will play with an extra reliever and a short bench, electing to DFA Francisco to make room for new reliever David Huff. There are a flurry of further moves on the way — Joba Chamberlain could be activated within a day or two, Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis are possible by the weekend, and Andy Pettitte could be ready in a week — so the roster is going to see a lot of changes.

“We definitely talk about that,” Joe Girardi said. “But as I’ve said, there’s a lot that can happen within a week or whatever when these guys come back. You kind of try to plan it out a little bit, but I don’t get too bogged down with it.”

By choosing to DFA Double-A reliever Francisco Rondon yesterday, and now designating Francisco, the Yankees have an open spot on the 40-man roster, which isn’t a bad thing. With Teixeira nearly ready to come off the 60-day, that 40-man spot should be filled within a few days.

“I don’t really spend my time worrying about roster spots,” Girardi said. “I worry about who’s in the clubhouse and who I have that day.”

Eduardo Nunez• Little bit of a setback for Eduardo Nunez. “He was doing pretty good, and he took some BP yesterday – where he really let it go – and felt like he couldn’t finish his swing,” Girardi said. “I don’t know what exactly that means, how long they’ll shut him down or if they’ll try in a couple of days. He was taking BP and he was doing OK, then he tried to really amp up some swings and said he felt a little something. What does that mean? I don’t know. Probably a few more days off. I guess he’s not ready for that yet.”

• The plan for Huff: “He gives us another lefty in our bullpen,” Girardi said. “And he’s also someone who can give you distance. In a time where we have some questions – I’m 99 percent sure that Kuroda will be fine for his start Tuesday, but we have to worry about Phelpsy a little bit where he’s at. I know he feels pretty good today, but I’m still not 99 percent sure on that one, so (Huff) gives us a little distance.”

• David Phelps played catch and threw 10 pitches off flat ground. He said he felt fine and will throw a light side tomorrow. He’s still expecting to make his next start.

• Andy Pettitte will throw a simulated game in Tampa on Tuesday. That puts Pettitte on schedule to start next Sunday, but Girardi said the Yankees will probably give him at least one extra day. Sounds like Pettitte will be back next Monday at the earliest.

• Chris Stewart isn’t catching today because he still feels something in his groin. “I don’t think Stew’s quite out of the woods yet,” Girardi said. “This way he kind of gets another day and a half, in a sense. I’m not afraid to use him today, but I just want to be careful.”

• Jack Curry reports that Brian Cashman refused to rule out the idea of Lyle Overbay getting some work in the outfield as a possible way to keep his bat in the lineup after Teixeira comes back. Overbay himself completely laughed off the idea yesterday. Asked if he can play the outfield with a first baseman’s mitt.

• I’m going to bet — and kind of hope – that I’ll never again use Rihanna in a lede, so here’s the proof that I did it at least once.

I really wish that Cashman would just trade Joba at this point. I’m not wild about his trying to push around Mo, and the bullpen is going great without him.

Nunez’s setback hurts. The Yanks really need to get more production out of the ss hole.

Montero 1.064 OPS with Tacoma so far.

It’s the PCL, he better hit the crap out of the ball if he wants to get back to the majors.

    Sterling:” I love it, I Lyle Lovett”…infantile.

Now that the great ben Francisco is gone, maybe the injuries will stop. I thought you need more position player in NL bec. you need to pinch hit for the pitcher and the double switch stuff. But maybe they are thinking, the pitcher could be better hitter than the position player that they will add.

no need to call nuney an ass hole.

Oy. Talk about jumping to conclusions…. Here let me clarify:
The Yanks really need to get more production out of the shortstop hole.

Jack – you obviously didn’t see my response to Ghost.

Lol mick. Bungholio us more of a pg lohud rating. Adams at short youk back at third till we fing a better solution.
Anyone ask overbay what he felt about short. Catcher. On second thought ddon’t ask. With the dl curse we’ve had this season he might bust a gut and land on the dl. Which would prompt the yanks to resign fransisco.

As a standalone, thats really not bad.

Francisco departs, hope he catches on somewhere and contributes like he did here! ;)

“Huff has good stuff” and I believe this is about Logan as much as anything else.

I wonder if the Mets will call Ben.

  12. fantasygame101 May 26th, 2013 at 1:16 pm

Tex does not want to move his family out of new York. Solution, trade to the mets.

    Need a new SS.
Not wait with all this hope for a .210 one.

With some luck, Jete will be back in a few weeks. I just wish somebody would hit a little more out of that slot. At this point, I’d be happy with somebody batting .250 out of that position.

  15. Ghostwriter May 26th, 2013 at 1:22 pm

I hope Francisco catches on elsewhere. He’s not a very good player, but he did everything that he was asked to do… … that is, when Girardi remembered him on the roster…

    Ghostwriter -

Agree that cliched questions will bring cliched answers.

Speaking of which, I don’t like the new post-game format at all.

13 pitchers is two too many in my book, butthatsshow biz. I shudder to think about Overbay in LF. It won’t be pretty. More likely he will have to settle for fill in opportunities until/unless Hafner or Tex is hurt again…. That shouldn’t take long

  18. blake May 26th, 2013 at 1:28 pm

Don’t laugh it off Lyle…..if it keeps you on the field and in the lineup then so be it

  19. luis May 26th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

    Good afternoon everyone,

Good luck out there Ben…Nunez has been hit twice and the rib cage thing. It is very hard to ask him to have a good avg when he hasn’t have consistent playing time at all this season.

    Ghost,

I don’t think we will enjoy Jeter this season… Perhaps next, but I wouldn’t count on it either

  20. GregD May 26th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

I don’t think Jeter is even doing any baseball activities yet is he……???

  21. Rich in NJ May 26th, 2013 at 1:30 pm

The first step is to find a way to keep Overbay’s timing intact v. RHP. Girardi can do that. They can revisit what to do with him a month or so after Tex finds his groove.

  22. GregD May 26th, 2013 at 1:30 pm

Luis—– I agree Jeter prob won’t be back……..see Morales and Adams

    Nope

gonna watch the game on TBS today

  25. GregD May 26th, 2013 at 1:32 pm

props to Cashman for Wells and Overbay……they have been great

  26. UpState May 26th, 2013 at 1:32 pm

    SS.
    Catch it well.
    Throw it well.
    Hit an effective .250.

    SOLD.

Unfortunately – not too confident that Derek will be back very soon.

If needs to be in there somewhere ;)

  28. Rich in NJ May 26th, 2013 at 1:33 pm

My target date for Jeter is Sept. 1. Get fully healed, then get his timing back and see if he can with a playoff run.

Exactly my point… It took Adams two years to come back from an ankle fracture… How long will it take to a 39 year old player?

  30. Ghostwriter May 26th, 2013 at 1:34 pm

Terrific. I’m getting the awful Tampa feed again for today’s game. I really wish that I could get the YES broadcast more often…

Tex can find his groove in Tanganika for all I care… If he would be willing to bat right handed only

I got the MLB package on the internet and Apple TV….I get to see all Yankee home telecasts and it’s cheaper than the extra innings package. Great picture on my tv too

So they are! Thanks, Luis! TBS is no great shakes either, but at least I’ll be free of those friggin’ homers on the Tampa broadcast this afternoon.
