TV/Radio: YES/WCBS 880

Weather: Partly cloudy, comfortable

Streaking: The Yankees are on their first three-game losing streak of the season. The Mets are on their second three-game winning streak.

Update, 7:10: Two batters in, and the Mets are up 1-0. Tejada, apparently under threat to wake up or be sent to Vegas (Ike Davis, too) breaks 0-for-12 skid with leadoff single and Murphy drives RBI double to right-center.

Update, 7:17: Buck RBI single, 2-0. This is like an offensive explosion for this team.

Update, 7:23: Nix error at third, 3-0. Claiborne warming up.

Update, 7:25: Ike Davis two-run single. Phelps KO’d after one-third of an inning, 5-0 Mets. Claiborne comes on.

Update, 7:46: Hefner gives up a broken-bat single to Cano in the first and that’s it. The Mets are 0-9 in Hefner’s starts, 0-10 in games in which he has appeared.

Update, 7:52: Claiborne good as usual so far, five up, five down.

Update, 8:05: Stewart goes down looking to strand runners at the corners, 5-0 after two. Adam Warren is on.

Update, 8:13: Byrd solo homer, 6-0 Mets after 2 1/2.

Update, 8:17: 1-2-3 third for Hefner.

Update, 8:30: Mets up 8-0 on Duda’s two-run double in the fourth.

Update, 8:39: Boesch HR No. 3, 8-1.

Update, 8:43: Nova on for the fifth.

Update, 8:52: Nova strands two. Wonder who will go to make room for Pettitte. Nova? Warren?

Update, 9:00: 1-2-3 fifth for Hefner, one run, five hits for the Yankees so far.

Update, 9:04: Nova has a good inning, 1-2-3, vs. Murphy, Wright and Duda.

Update, 9:11: Single, double, infield hit, 8-2. Hawkins warming for the Mets.

Update, 9:13: Ichiro pops out. Rice joins Hawkins in bullpen.

Update, 9:15: Nix RBI single, 8-3.

Update, 9:24: Three scoreless innings for Nova.

Update, 9:27: Hefner is done, Scott Rice is on for the seventh.

Update, 9:35: Rice was sharp, three up, three down.

Update, 9:43: Four scoreless for Nova. Something positive is coming out of this game.

Update, 9:46: Hawkins comes on with Ichiro at second and two outs in the eighth. Attendance: 43,681.

Update, 9:51: Nix grounds out after a bobble by the shaky Tejada.

Update, 10:20: Yankees lose 9-4.

  2. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

This is pathetic. The Yankees should be embarrassed

  3. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:11 pm

But we’re still rooting for them to win tonight, right?

  4. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:12 pm

You bet your Ramen noodles we are

  5. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

Well, this is an inauspicious start.

I just hope Phelps is not having problems from being hit last start.

  6. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

I wish I had some to bet.

  7. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

All of a sudden the Mets have turned into patient hitters??

  8. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:15 pm

    wow phelps is being squeezed
every pitch to wright besides ball 4 was a strike

  9. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

    Yeesh! (manly)

    Come on, Phelps!

  10. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Well so much for this game

  11. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 7:18 pm

are we going to lose to the mets three games in a row?

  12. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 7:18 pm

The mets were the worst team in baseball before the last brave game they won, now all of a sudden their tough to beat. Like really?

  13. theREALkevin May 29th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Phelps up in the zone too much. But man what a pathetic throw from Boesch

  14. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

    Bullpen already?

  15. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

phelps is about to lose the game in the first inning

  16. Hassey May 29th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

$1 to anyone who can tell me why phelps is sux at home

The wheels are falling off our cart

  17. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Phelps is one fastball too close to the center from putting this game out of reach before our wonderful offense gets a chance to score their daily 1 run.

  18. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

    WOWWWWWW
you have to be kidding me!

  19. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

    NOOOOOOO!!!

  20. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

that would have been the inning ending DP.

  21. egk May 29th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

It’s ok. Nix will strike out looking again to make up for that.

  22. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

looks like we’re actually going to need some offense tonight. Better step up. For those that think we don’t need offense you’re in for a rude awakening

  23. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

    Thank you Jayson Nix!

  24. theREALkevin May 29th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

Nix already can’t hit. if he’s making errors he’s totally worthless. He’s playing too much right now but I guess they don’t have a lot of other options

  25. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

Um okay. GO YANKS!!! GO PHELPSY!!! GO PHILS!!!

    Question – is Phelps hurt?

  27. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    Holy crap.

    Any good movies on tonight???

  28. mick May 29th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    it’s almost funny…

  29. Shame Spencer May 29th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    Do you hear the ‘let’s go Mets’ chants…??? I can’t with this….

Losing a 4 game series to the Mets would be terrible… thankfully it’s early and their pitching isn’t great. If ever there was a day to score ten runs, this might be it.

  30. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    game over

  31. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

So the offense has to come back and pick up the pitching.

    And they will.

If I had a dime for every time I told John Sterling to go “f” himself while I listened to him drone on and on about the lack of Yankee hitting, I’d be a rich woman. “Well you know Suzyn, one run isn’t going to win it.” GO F YOURSELF YOU BLOWHARD.

This will be a high-scoring game.

And for anyone who was fretting about why Nova was still in the bullpen.

    Why indeed.

  32. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

The Yankees NEEDED these games vs the Mets.
The Sox are not going to go easy on us.

  33. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Mets won in their ballpark, now it was our turn to win in ours, not this.

  34. Hassey May 29th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Looks like had net will have to hit five solo homers

  35. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    “game over”

Hope there’s some good television for you to watch tonight!

    See ya next game.

  36. Hassey May 29th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

    Hafner
    This auto spell check sucks

  37. mick May 29th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

does adams really need a day off?

  38. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

You don’t NEED games on May 29th, but yeah it sucks to be losing 5-0 now.

  39. Boston Jim May 29th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

    Yanks still win, 12-7

  40. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

One thing blowhard Sterling did say is that it is common for young pitchers to tell managers they’re fine when they’re not.

My guess is Phelps is hurt. We ALL know Phelps doesn’t suck.

  41. mick May 29th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

if phelps is hurt then he hurt his team as well…not a fan of playing hurt, its more selfish than anything.

  42. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Must be the umps fault or is it too hot or too cold. Probably the late arriving flight back home last night, oh wait. By all means though nothing to see here, no reason to possibly question anything.

  43. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Anything is possible, but five runs behind, two on, one out, and the Yankees haven’t even come up yet, I’d say that if they win this game it will be quite an accomplishment.

Not once this season have they bounced back when they were out into a deep hole early.

  44. RYUKINGDOM May 29th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

How much do you appreciate a guy like Kuroda? There are plenty of his type here in Japan.

  45. theREALkevin May 29th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Really lame, Phelps made the pitch for the double play and Nix blew it. Should have been out of the inning 2-0. Obviously Phelps was awful but that error by Nix just cannot happen. So, for the record Nix is .239/.309/.299 this year with 45 K’s in 134 AB’s. And now he makes a key error that allows at least 3 additional runs to score. It does appear that was his first error of the season at 3rd, but still, unacceptable. I’d be exploring any other option possible after that E by him

  46. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

I meant need more in the sense of the risk of going on a losing streak with the Red Sox coming in.

  47. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    “Yanks still win, 12-7″

    There ya go!

“if phelps is hurt then he hurt his team as well…not a fan of playing hurt, its more selfish than anything.”

mick, I agree. They probably think they’re being selfless by pitching through the pain or whatever’s going on, but in the end, they not only hurt the team, they hurt themselves.

  48. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    “game over”

    ___

Adams at 3b and Gonzalez as BUC.

  50. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

How does Phelps look in the second inning in the alternate universe in which Nix turns that DP?

  51. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    BU IF not C sorry

  52. Against All Odds May 29th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

  54. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

I see someone just can’t control their nastiness, despite being warned. I guess an email to Chad is in order. In fact, I have several other posts to add to this one. Be back.

  55. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

trish, why must you be so condescending? giving up 5 runs in the first inning is basically game over for this team…do i want a comeback, yes, but it isn’t realistic. grow up.

  56. tomingeorgia May 29th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Come to the PC 10 minutes late, and what the hell happened?
    We’ll get them, anyway.

  57. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

“trish, why must you be so condescending? giving up 5 runs in the first inning is basically game over for this team…do i want a comeback, yes, but it isn’t realistic. grow up.”

YOU grow up. Unless this is your first rode, to same game over before the Yanks have even come to bat is beyond crazy.

    ************

“But according to you the Yanks will score runs tonight right?”

Against a 2-6 NL pitcher? I don’t think the Yankees are dead. So yes, I believe they will score runs tonight.

Now I have to email Chad.

  58. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

If we want to get back into this game right away, the key to this inning is to get Gardner to plate twice. #analysis

  59. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

What happened? I come back from dinner to find the game nearly out of reach. It looks like Phelpsie really spit the bit today, in the words of the Boss. True?

  60. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Nick, that is the gazillion dollar question? Would he have settled down? Watched tape and fixed something? Of more of the same? Nix nixed our chance to know.

  61. The helmet of Nunez May 29th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

    now Hefner is Cy Yong……

  62. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

What are Niese’s stats this year?

  64. theREALkevin May 29th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

ac1, yeah, anything. I’m just so tired of Nix

  65. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Arm injury from his last start bothering Phelps?

  66. longtimefan May 29th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Joe Girardi for manager of the year–Nix over Adams and Stewie 3 straight games even though Romine has worked many more games with Phelps

  67. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

    hefner facing hafner

  68. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Nix made the error. But ya gotta get Ike Davis out.

  69. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Triple, it would have been nice for the offense not to be 5 runs behind, but it’s hardly their doing. And I believe Phelps is hurt because this pitching was so not him.

And yes I believe they can hit the Mets. I wasn’t surprised it didn’t happen so much last night because Harvey was pitching. But I believe it can happen tonight.

  70. Against All Odds May 29th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

    Can’t stand Ike Davis

  71. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

    Girardi is not amused.

  72. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

Girardi not amused? It’s his joke of a lineup.

  73. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

Triple, it would have been nice for the offense not to be 5 runs behind, but it’s hardly their doing.

    ———————————-

They scored 1 run against the mighty Jon Niese. That wasn’t on them either?

  74. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 7:47 pm

When your as bad as nix swinging the bat, his top priority should be playing solid D, and that play he should of made answers would only be down 2-0, not 5-0.

Nix isn’t Miguel Cabrera where he can make up for bad defense.

  75. NYY fan in NH May 29th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

Wow this team is in a funk and the offense and pitching are crap at the same time. Thank god for Kuroda, but this team is hurting for offense. Too bad it’s got to be against the Mets..

  76. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

I felt the Harvey game was going to be tough so winning the other 3 would be tough no matter who you played which is why I was willing to settle for a split but now they will be lucky to no get swept and its not like the front office gives a damn.

  77. Shame Spencer May 29th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

The Mets are also a terrible offensive team so it’s not easy to glean a guy’s talent level based on only on their record.

That being said, we should still be winning…. something. Anything!!

  78. Shame Spencer May 29th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

  81. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

The sad reality is that no matter how many stupid things the Binder does, he’ll be allowed to skate because of the injuries and the team will be stuck with the Binder for 3 more years.

Now, what about the people who are there? They can’t change the channel. And baseball can be a boring game if your team is losing before you even found your seat…

  88. Tyler May 29th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Watching Phils-Sox and the Phils are running all over Lackey/Saltalamacchia. Hopefully the Yanks (Gardner, Ichiro) decide to move a little on the paths.

  89. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

It looked like Phelps was afraid to throw strikes and started nibbling.

It’s funny how Adams gets the day off and Nix fails to make the play at 3rd and Ichiro who is always in RF isn’t there and Boesch’s arm isn’t strong enough to get the guy at home. The fill ins hurt you right away.

  90. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

“I hope he isn’t but he is rooting for a crash and burn.”

Who is rooting for what to crash and burn?

  91. Frankg May 29th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Our luck is running out. The law of averages has turned against the Yankees. Things are not looking too good lately. Keep your fingers crossed. I’m worried.

i forgot that trish is the only one allowed to have an opinion.

She is a total screwball isn’t she? I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve got a couple of friends that read this blog just for laughs.

  94. Against All Odds May 29th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Randy is rooting for the Yankees to have a bad season so that Cashman can be fired. Therefore they’ll change their organizational philosophy. He wants them to bottom out and build the team from within.

  95. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

    That’s not a strike.

  96. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Damn that was right down the middle

  97. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Ballpark kept that from being a homerun

  98. Tyler May 29th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

That was big opportunity for Brignac.. can’t get a better pitch.

  99. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Joe Girardi: “Jayson Nix is a baseball player.”

    And I don’t know why.

Nixy missed his true calling life, as a garbageman.

I thought that ground ball by Nixy was a DP. So it got me thinking. Nixy is a DP. He double penetrates us. He effs us in both ways. He’s terrible offensively and defensively.

    Stewie!!!! Stewie is starting again!!!

  100. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:04 pm

Clutch, if you’re here, I see they sat Vernon and put Boesch in. That’s good. Boesch has at least tagged it, though it was caught.

  101. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 8:05 pm

    Jeremy Hefner

  102. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:05 pm

They need to be aggressive and swing the bats. Hefner is garbage and throwing the ball right over the plate.

  103. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

But they will hit tonight right Trish?

  104. longtimefan May 29th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Stewie!!!!! That’s what he’s in for. To stare at strike 3s right down the middle!!!

3 losers playing every day. Stewie, Brignac, Nixy!

  107. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Dd he move the bat off his shoulder?

  108. Tyler May 29th, 2013 at 8:07 pm

USA-Belgium on ESPN. Probably better than this. Huge test for the USMNT.

  109. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

And in a previous lifetime cogen 777 was who?

    LMAO!!!!

  110. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

I see they sat Vernon and put Boesch in
    ————

Yeah it was a good move. It was obvious that Wells needed a day off and Cano should get one tomorrow. Boesch has some pop and can hit a little bit.

  111. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Yanks don’t have the offensive firepower right now to be coming back from defecits like this. The offense is even worse than before now with guys like wells and hafner not really hitting anymore.

  112. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

I can’t believe I can hear a “Let’s go Mets” chant at Yankee stadium. Pansy fans.

    ——————————

You can hear that chant on here on certain nights

  113. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

This team was too good to be true. And as long as this fckface Girardi is here, he’ll continue starting Nixy even when our regulars come back… to get his regulars rest. And he’ll continue starting Stewie. Stewie starts more than Russell Martin ever did.

  114. njsketch May 29th, 2013 at 8:09 pm

i forgot that trish is the only one allowed to have an opinion.

    ___

She is a total screwball isn’t she? I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve got a couple of friends that read this blog just for laughs.

    ___

i usually just lurk but her condescension is annoying. if i think the game was lost in the first inning, that’s an opinion. i don’t need to be told to go watch something else and leave.

  115. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

Oh yes, randy. Actually, I believe it’s gone beyond wanting Cashman fired. He has said that he wants the Steinbrenners to sell the team, which of course is his right.

randy, I would bet, is following along with these comments in this game thread. Withdrawal is difficult. At least we know that he’s happy about the losing streak and rooting for it to continue.

Godspeed, randy, and I hope you stay well. Looking forward to your return in late July.

  116. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

“But they will hit tonight right Trish?”

Will you feel better if they don’t Triple? Will that make you happier? You name it Triple. What would you like to see happen with the offense tonight? That they don’t do anything so you can spread your unfettered cheer here as usual? You tell me. What do you want to happen tonight.

It is the 3rd though, so I can see why you’re already calling the game over and declaring they won’t hit.

  117. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

And if the Yankees had Boesch last year instead of that waste of humanity Nick Swisher, maybe Jeter doesnt get hurt in Game 1 ALCS.

  118. longtimefan May 29th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

Big come back tonight led by Stewie & Nixie-stay tuned!

  119. Against All Odds May 29th, 2013 at 8:11 pm

    6-0

    Crap

  120. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

That jeter injury was inevitable to happen with the foot problems he was having the last 2 months of last season. That swisher play has nothing to do with his injury.

  121. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

Of course I want them to win but that doesn’t mean I think they will. That is the difference between you and me. Do me a favor and find out how many teams came back from a 5 or more run deficit this year?

  122. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

The Steinbrenners are disgraces to their father. I’d rather have the Abu Dhabi group, or Roman Abramovich, or even Mark Cuban as owner. At least they’d spend money instead of this $189 million crap. The only advantage NY has is the money. Spend it, spend $500 million. Blow every other loser team out of the water.

  123. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

This is pathetic. The Mets haven’t had a pulse all year and it shows you how bad the pitching has been for the Yanks in this series.

  124. jacksquat May 29th, 2013 at 8:14 pm

This is the sort of game where you need the inconsistent home run hitters in the lineup.

  125. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:15 pm

“Of course I want them to win but that doesn’t mean I think they will. That is the difference between you and me. Do me a favor and find out how many teams came back from a 5 or more run deficit this year?”

So it makes you better than me or smarter than me because I believe they can come back? AGAIN – it isn’t like they’re facing great pitching. I was taking that into account.

I still haven’t given up on this game.

At least you didn’t call it over in the first inning.

  126. joeman May 29th, 2013 at 8:15 pm

could this be where it all catches up to them

  127. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Triple, I don’t think we counted on being behind by 5 runs in the first inning.

It’s really a bad confluence of events.

  128. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

The Yanks better start hitting if they want to beat the Sox this weekend. They can’t expect to beat them if they are going to score 1-2 runs every night. It will get ugly fast if these guys don’t start hitting.

  129. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Two types of comments are preferred here: those in total support of every decision made by the owners, GM and manager; and those expressing never-ending optimisim that the team will win the day’s game.

  130. theREALkevin May 29th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

I like Gardner as a player but he can be a real moron sometimes. You’re down 6-0, you’re leading off the inning, and you swing at the first pitch- a ball- and pop out. That’s brutal

  131. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

  140. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:19 pm

  143. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:20 pm

If you want to criticize Girardi, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, he’s a mile away and you have his shoes.

  146. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 8:22 pm

“Do me a favor and find out how many teams came back from a 5 or more run deficit this year?”

The only thing I will say on this is if you are going to be down 5-0, being down by that much in the 1st inning, is preferable. It gives you 9 full innings to get those runs back.

Of course you do need to shut them down to have any chance.

  147. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 8:22 pm

Oh yes I’m highly confident the Yanks will win this game, even though Fangraphs puts the chances at 4.9%. To think, or heaven forbid, write anything to the contrary is just wrong.

    Well, that was not optimal.

  178. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:31 pm

If when Cisco returns, he’s not the starting catcher..

If when our other players return, Nixy is anything but a spot starter on this team..

I’m done with this 2013 team run by Retardi.

  182. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:33 pm

I care too, trisha.. Just frustrated watching this mess of a team.

Mostly thanks to constant injuries. The rest thanks to this backup catcher Retardi and his obsession with backup players.

Blaming joe for the injuries and the losing streak now? Joe should be a manager of the year candidate with the record they have now. People picked them last, and they are right there for first.

  188. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 8:34 pm

I guess Yankees fans aren’t even bothering to come to see this team anymore. The fact that the Mets fans have a whole section in YS is pathetic.

  189. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:35 pm

Jackie, this isn’t pleasant to watch, no question. But it doesn’t mean that these guys can’t turn it around. If they’re in the middle of a funk – as happens in the course of a season – they have to come out of it. Hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

  190. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 8:35 pm

Fangraphs chances now 2.1%. But that’s nothing for this great lineup.

  191. The Other Phil May 29th, 2013 at 8:36 pm

  196. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:37 pm

Tyler what hurts about those two is that we could have had both of them but for some unfortunate/unusual problem with our pitching.

    :(

  197. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 8:37 pm

The tiger series last year in the playoffs and the lack of activity in the offseason seems like it has kept a lot of people away from the ballparks. The lack of star power in the lineup also doesn’t help. Casual fans want to see jeter and arod and they aren’t here now.

  198. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

trisha, the team has to be put in the best position to succeed. When Nixy and Stewie are playing every day, the team is not. They are 2 scrubs that dont deserve the PT they get, even with all the injuries.

Retardi is a backup catcher that loves to get his backups oodles of PT.

  199. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

  212. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:42 pm

Brignac has played in at least 4 games for us already. So glad Girardi values the guy with a .258 OBP

  213. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 8:42 pm

What are these guys looking at?

  214. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 8:43 pm

If you can praise Girardi you can question him. But he was the one who played Nix over Adams. Our pitching has been great for the most part. Especially the bullpen. That’s why we have been in first most of the year.

  215. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 8:43 pm

Jbj what are girardis options at ss? Nix and brignac…. Not like jeter is on the bench.

  216. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 8:44 pm

Who do you want in the lineup then with the injuries this team has? Other then Adams over nix, there no other options until guys come off the DL.

  217. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Once it’s no longer close, there s no tension in watching and you can hope they make it a game or even come all the way back.

Much harder to carry a clse game I to the 8th and 9th innings and your alwAys steady bullpen have a bad night. I absolutely hate wasted efforts by starting pitchers.

The Yankees will win tomorrow, because they’ll get all the yuckiness out tonight.

  218. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Girardi has done a great job and now with the old guns being mixed in with the new toy guns his job is going to remain challenging.

  219. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 29th, 2013 at 8:45 pm

    Romine over Stewie.

Brignac, Nix and Stewart should not be in the lineup all at the same time. Should not. Under no circumstance.

  220. tomingeorgia May 29th, 2013 at 8:47 pm

    Was that Nova at 97?

  221. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 8:47 pm

This is a good opportunity for Nova to work on some things and try to find his groove in a low leverage situation. That is at least one positive out of this.

We still need everyone on board. The season is too young to give up on anyone yet.

  222. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 8:47 pm

    Nova future closer?

  223. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Romine wasn’t exactly Mike Piazza at the plate in the games he played. So he isn’t automatically a better option then Stewart.

  224. Tyler May 29th, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Gameday has him at 97. Don’t know if that’s great for a guy who relies on sink to his pitches but he’s definitely firing it right now.

  225. joeman May 29th, 2013 at 8:48 pm

    jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 8:39 pm
Joeman I wasn’t saying he should be manager of the year, I meant he has been one so far with the injuries this team has gone though and what people expected of this team.

    that clears it up

  226. mick May 29th, 2013 at 8:48 pm

Yes this game is a real yuckfest.

  227. ac1 May 29th, 2013 at 8:50 pm

Nova’s sinker looks real good today

  228. mick May 29th, 2013 at 8:50 pm

so who wasn’t supposed to be here when they were losing, i forget…

  229. Russell Munson May 29th, 2013 at 8:51 pm

    I think it’s more of a blechfest.

  230. mick May 29th, 2013 at 8:51 pm

nova is in his element, no pressure…

  231. TheStraw May 29th, 2013 at 8:51 pm

I would gladly trade three losses to the Mets for a sweep over the Dox this weekend. People should really lighten up a little since this is the first stretch of bad team baseball the Yanks have played since the first three games of the year.

I prefer not to use this forum as a place to vent over every single bad play of the season. The best teams in baseball still lose 4 of every ten games.

  232. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 8:52 pm

    hey guys!

    still a winnable game!

    LGY!

  233. Jerkface May 29th, 2013 at 8:52 pm

97 is great if it was actually his sinker and down in the zone. He’d get crazy ground balls at that speed.

  234. mick May 29th, 2013 at 8:52 pm

I see a big inning coming, who’s up for us?

  235. Russell Munson May 29th, 2013 at 8:54 pm

I think Nova would feel pressure since he’s pitching for his career but I’m not a guy pretending to be a psychiatrist on the internet.

Anyone is a better option than Stewie. The corpse of Johnny Pesky would be a better option

  239. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 8:55 pm

I like the movement on Nova’s pitches. If he can command it better they should have him close a couple of games when Mo is not available. Throwing 97mph for an inning or 2. Doesn’t hurt. We could save money by not signing a free agent reliever.

  240. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Does it matter who is coming up? I mean we got hairy monsters littered up and down the lineup. No worries.

  241. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

can anyone tell me if arod is playing X-ST games?

i ask because the yankees seem to have moved from a ‘be cautious’ attitude regarding rehabs, to a ’4 games and good-to-go attitude.

how can they tell arod that he needs 50 or more ab’s the minors after extended ST when they let granderson and teixeira come back after 4 games back this whole year.

arod may be back alot sooner than alot of people think…

  242. Russell Munson May 29th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Romine could have popped that up farther.

  245. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 8:57 pm

Any chance we can get Manny. We need a RH bat right? I would be all for it.

  246. tomingeorgia May 29th, 2013 at 8:58 pm

    Mr. mick,
Most of us are here, win or lose, except those who root for losses to make a point about one peeve or another. I, for one, took pleasure in Nova’s inning. Luckily, I missed the first inning entirely.

  247. longtimefan May 29th, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Guys are sleep walking thru this–Gardner doesn’t even attempt a bunt

  248. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

i was ok with stewie getting the bulk of the work behind the plate when he was actually playing solid D.

now he’s a liability, he seems to be playing in some kind of fog back there.

  249. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

“arod may be back alot sooner than alot of people think…”

They also rushed Hughes back. It does seem to be a pattern this year.

  250. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

I would want A-Rod back before Tex and Grandy

  251. longtimefan May 29th, 2013 at 9:00 pm

    Cano’s a quitter

  252. Tyler May 29th, 2013 at 9:00 pm

If Nova was throwing 97 mph sinkers we would have another ace.

  253. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 9:02 pm

    Just curious…

Game on the line…does anybody here think Joe would pinch hit Overbay for Tex vs a RH pitcher? Would you do it? Thanks

the natinals may not be all that and a bag of chips, but they are helping us out anyway.

  256. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 9:04 pm

This is the drawback of playing the entire Subway Series in consecutive days. Mets have all the momentum after stealing the first two. They have nothing to lose. This is the highlight of their season.

Unfortunately, it is turning into the lowlight of ours.

Don’t fancy Nuno’s chances tomorrow night either the way this “offense” is slumping.

  257. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:04 pm

igotid, I don’t believe Nova has the mental strength to be a closer.

  258. Jerkface May 29th, 2013 at 9:04 pm

The Yankees are always reckless with rehabs and incredibly cautious with the walking wounded. Its why they play with 23 man rosters for 2 weeks and bring guys off the DL 2 days into their rehab.

  259. tomingeorgia May 29th, 2013 at 9:05 pm

Nova has a nasty hook and a very good, high velocity sinker going tonight. Where’ve you been?

Game on the line…does anybody here think Joe would pinch hit Overbay for Tex vs a RH pitcher? Would you do it? Thanks
    ———–

No way would Joe do it but yeah depending on how Tex is going at the time of this hypothetical AB, I would do it.

Still I am looking forward to Tex coming back. I wish their was a way for him and Overbay to both be in the lineup vs. Righties.

  261. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Tar, I’d have to see the binder. Which RH pitcher and what numbers does each have against that pitcher? Has Tex been slumping? But I wouldn’t say no straight up.

  262. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Maybe Trisha but we won’t know until we find out. Wouldn’t it be something if we found another Mo. Failed starter but dominant in a reliever’s role.

  263. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

bruceb, just as my father always told us that they don’t ring a bell to tell you the highs or the lows of the stock market, nor do thy ring a bell to tell you when a funk has ended.

I wouldn’t make any assumption about the offense based on these games. After all, it’s the same offense that assured that in any game where the Yanks were behind in the 6th inning, they came back to win – except for the first one that they didn’t, which happened quite recently. (I heard that after one of the games.)

  264. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:08 pm

i really like keith hernandez. he and cone have alot in common.

It would be great igotid. And when he’s right, Nova’s stuff has been great. I just think that he’s lost his confidence and it has affected his pitching.

    GO HAF!!!

  267. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 9:10 pm

Trish, I know you like to beat the drum and I’m all for the power of positive thinking, but just as good players usually end up playing to the back of their baseball cards, so do bad ones…and we have quite a few of them in our lineup right now.

  272. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 9:11 pm

Better a ground-rule double than Hafner pulls a hafstring trying to bust it to home plate.

  273. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 9:11 pm

That’s a bad break, though, isn’t it? Do you think Hafner would have scored if it wasn’t ground rule.

    Wow! Go Boesch!!

  274. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 9:12 pm

    Thanks guys.

I’m just trying to figure out if Overbay has a future role at all on this team. I say no way Joe ever pinch hits for Tex, Unless (big unless) he can use the injury risk excuse.

  275. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:12 pm

    wow, wut up with tejada?

  276. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 9:13 pm

After all, it’s the same offense that assured that in any game where the Yanks were behind in the 6th inning, they came back to win

    ???

Definitely not a true stat. They entered the 6th behind 18 times and ended it behind 17 times.

From the 6th to the 9th inning they have entered the game behind 80 times and tied the game 6 times and took the lead 3 times.

  278. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:13 pm

  279. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 9:13 pm

  281. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:14 pm

pitches are up, time for a dinger!

  282. chicken_stanley May 29th, 2013 at 9:14 pm

I’m old school but how many other Yanks would have hustled like Boesch to leg out that infield single?

  283. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 9:14 pm

That’s why having Nova pitch 1 maybe 2 innings at a time is better. He can throw 97 and not worry about trying to keep his focus for a full game.

  284. PacoDooley May 29th, 2013 at 9:15 pm

Ichiro is toast. Kay says that he is still looking for his swing – he needs to look in 2010 because that is the last time anyone has seen it consistently…

  285. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:15 pm

“and we have quite a few of them in our lineup right now.”

Really? 1-6 have been pretty solid players in their day. We know that Brignac is here for defense. Sorry if Nix and Stewart aren’t 500 hitters.

I’m not beating an empty drum bruceb, but you can feel free to process this team any way you need to.

  286. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 9:15 pm

Kay is still excited so that is good.

  287. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 9:15 pm

“Tar – I definitely agree, but Joe did PH for Alex so never say never I guess.”

Good point, but I think Tex is one of Joe’s guys, and Alex obviously is not. Could be wrong though.

  288. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:16 pm

i didnt hear the first inning, i was in costco. but as soon as i heard it was 5-0 in the first, i told my gf ‘this is gonna end up being a close game’

    here we go…

  289. Jerkface May 29th, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Sorry if Nix and Stewart aren’t 500 hitters.

They are .500 OPS hitters. No need for hyperbole to defend Nix and Stewart’s bad bats.

  290. jacksquat May 29th, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Overbay could pinch hit for several guys on this team. Romine, Stewart, Cervelli, Nunez, Brignac, Nix, perhaps Adams, Ichiro, Boesch, Gardner…

  291. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 9:18 pm

I would have been tempted to use Adams as pinch hitter here. Prove me wrong Stewie

  292. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 9:18 pm

Can’t wait for Dillon Gee to shut us down tomorrow.

3 runs against Jeremy Hefner at Yankee Stadium

  293. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 9:19 pm

“In their day” being the operative phrase. Never mind .500 hitters. Would be nice to have one over .300. This team has defied the odds with what they have achieved so far this season but we’re not even into June yet so let’s not start anointing Joe G manager of the year just yet.

  294. longtimefan May 29th, 2013 at 9:19 pm

There is a reason why Stewart has been a back-up his entire career

  295. TheStraw May 29th, 2013 at 9:20 pm

I’d rather Nix play SS every day and Adams 3rd than give Brignac any playing time. At least Nix gets a few clutch hits every now and then.

  296. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Boesch should play more often, he can hit but you have to live with his defense. Ichiro really looks finished. Brignac got 2 absolute meatballs and missed both of them and Stewart is Stewart. A decent offense scores a couple of more runs in that inning.

  297. Tar May 29th, 2013 at 9:21 pm

What a great sight Jeter throwing the ball!!!

  298. RYUKINGDOM May 29th, 2013 at 9:21 pm

I’m really surprised how Ichiro is non clutch. I mean he’s not willing to take a walk and is quick to stop a rally. I think he’s no more than a defensive fielder.

  299. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 9:22 pm

I am sure that Brignac will be gone on Friday. He can’t hit major league pitching.

I really wish that Romine was given more playing time. Let’s see what he can do. I know that Stewart is Girardi’s boy but he is terrible.

  300. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

And Stew dog just got under it.

Well good news I think we are now only one shy of our avg. runs per game this season. Yeah the whole season. A whopping 4 runs. Move over 1927 Yanks.

  301. jlyanks85 May 29th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Ichrio really is a black hole in this awful offense right now. Boesch should be given a chance to start. He can’t do any worse than a under .300 OBP and no power like Ichrio has done.

  302. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Ichiro has saved some runs with his defense as well.

  303. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:24 pm

“Maybe Lyle can play the OF…..”

    Cashman has actually mentioned that.

    ***********

jerkface I said the other day I wasn’t sure if I was quoting that entirely correctly. They said it was the first game all season where the Yankees were (I thought losing in the 6th – they did mention the 6th inning) and didn’t come back to win it. And if I did quote it correctly and they got it wrong, so be it. But there was some cool thing attributed to the Yanks, having to do with coming back to win every time except that particular time.

  304. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:24 pm

ichiro went almost two full seasons where his OBP never got over .300 before he came to the yankees.

in a better lineup with renewed enthusiasm, he was able to raise his obp over .300 through august and september last year.

a not-unrelated factor is that he turned 39 in the offseason.

ichiro isnt the guy who played for the yankees last year, but in fact he hasnt really been that guy for the past 2 seasons.

  305. RYUKINGDOM May 29th, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Can’t believe the Orioles. They were down 6-3, 30 minutes ago and now ahead 9-6. Now that’s an offensive team.

  306. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 9:25 pm

And to put this in perspective, the Mets were 4-13 in their last 17 games coming into the Subway Series.

  307. Jerkface May 29th, 2013 at 9:26 pm

How would the Yankees have ever lost a game if they didn’t blow any saves and always came back in games they were losing in the 6th? They’d have to have only ever lost games in the 7th or 8th innings.

As we know its not true, but I can’t even imagine what you might have misheard.

  308. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:27 pm

Yeah, and I’ve tried to track it down by doing different Google searches. But dammit I know I heard it.

I know it dealt with the 6th inning and the first game where the Yankees didn’t come back and win.

I’ll see if I can track it down.

    GRR!!!

I should have just quoted it at the very minute I heard it.

  314. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

wait, are yankees fans supposed to have some ‘loyalty’ to ichiro? because he’s been a yankee for, what 3 months?

i love ichiro the baseball player. but ichiro the yankee in real terms is just a guy playing out the end of his career. im glad we have him (though not so glad hes under contract for next season).

he fits the role they have for him, but that role needs to diminish as his ability to get on base diminishes.

    to me, he’s a HOF’er!

  315. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

“Bit hard to wave the pom poms when you’re being shown up for the third night running by one of the worst teams in baseball. Doesn’t mean we won’t be back to root for them again tomorrow. Keep it real.”

Not for me. Because I know that anything is possible with the New York Yankees. So that’s keeping it real for me.

And since Robertson and Mo don’t typically have the kinds of nights they did, I don’t take anything away from those games as being “shown up”.

However, you keep it real whatever way you need to. I don’t need to be told how to keep things real.

    Thanks though.

I don’t count the first 8 innings of last night Kuroda out pitched Harvey and Robertson rebounded and did well. Tht inning against Mo was weird.

Thw Hughes game, Hughes did a good job and I expected them to be ble to score more against Niese.

    What is up with Cano???

Tonight totally stinks though, as have all the games they got vastly behind early.

  319. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I spent most of the night after the game looking at past drafts. And we drafted some good players who ended up being drafted again by other teams later on. I saw that we drafted Chris Davis.,

I didn’t tell YOU to stop waving pom poms and I didn’t criticize you either. I’ve known you (in the blogger sense) for long enough to realize you are one of life’s great optimists and I have no problem with that. Wish I could be as upbeat but I can’t. Especially not this week.

  329. Yank 97 May 29th, 2013 at 9:44 pm

When you think Phelps is about to establish himself as a mainstay, he has an outing like this.

Hughes, Nova, Phelps, and sadly, CC, are all interchangeable right now. Only difference is CC goes 7-8 when he sucks,

  330. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Of course it’s pretty easy to pitch mopup in a 7 run game. Quite a bit different when you’re starting and the game is on the line.

  331. jacksquat May 29th, 2013 at 9:46 pm

Weird how Ichiro continues to hit lhp much better than rhp.

  332. Russell Munson May 29th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

So should Nova get Phelps’s next start?

  333. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

Just needed a 5 run homer. That’s not too much to ask for, is it?

  334. Triple Short of a Cycle May 29th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

chris davis becoming a jr. david ortiz?

  335. jacksquat May 29th, 2013 at 9:49 pm

Nix, Brignac and Stewart spells rally.

  336. Russell Munson May 29th, 2013 at 9:50 pm

Hard to believe it’s been 15 years since Hawkins took the mound against David Wells on Beanie Baby Day.

  337. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 9:52 pm

Nixie really is a ball player. Just not a good one.

  338. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:52 pm

bruceb – come on, of course I understand why you wouldn’t feel upbeat. I’m not dancing with joy about the way they’ve been playing. But I always believe they are one hit away from starting a come back. I guess that’s what I remain optimistic about.

Hopefully things will turn around and give all Yankee fans something to feel joyful about.

Now I’m taking heart in things like the way Nova pitched (Niblick, even though it was mop up, it might be the shot of confidence that Nova needed) and also in the Sux losing in Philadelphia.

You know what the killer is? The first two games could have gone our way. And if Phelps had a typical Phelps game, we could be winning this game.

    :(

  339. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 9:53 pm

So should Nova get Phelps’s next start?
    ————

I think we wait and see if Phelps is hurt or something. That might make the decision fairly easy.

  340. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:54 pm

I’m still searching for that 6th inning tidbit…

  341. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:54 pm

the mets announcers are better than yes and the yankees announcers and its not even close.

gary cohen is much better than michael kay.

keith hernandez is better than anybody the yankees have although #2 is cone (darling #3 and kenny singleton is #4)

howie rose for all his yankee resentment is much better than sterling.

josh leuwen (sp) is a much better than suzyn waldman.

kevin burkhart on his worst day is better than meredith morokovits on her best day.

  342. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:58 pm

    :D

Well I knew that the 6th inning was mentioned!!!

“David Wright hit his first home run at Citi Field this year leading off the seventh. Murphy came through against David Robertson (3-1) to hand the Yankees their first loss in 23 games when leading after six innings”

  343. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 9:58 pm

and the mets dont have anybody as bad as paul oneill.

  344. theREALkevin May 29th, 2013 at 9:59 pm

Yankees are 21st in MLB in OBP and 22nd in BB%. Definitely not their MO. Both of those numbers need to improve. Zero walks tonight

  345. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 9:59 pm

    YS Guy

Now all we need to do is swop the Mets lineup for ours :)

  346. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 9:59 pm

Good news. Phils picked up another run.

    4-2, bottom of the 8th.

I like Cone, Leiter and Singleton.

Outside of the White Sox announcers Gary Cohen is the biggest homer there is and he is obnoxious to boot. The guy pulled rank and pushed Howie Rose aside so he could broadcast a playoff game on the radio

  349. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Pumpkin time for Nova and the Yanks.

  350. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Trisha – I think it was in a post from Chad, but I’m pretty sure it was a typo and he meant leading not losing.

  351. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 10:04 pm

    Papel(no longer a)bum pitching the 9th.

  352. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Niblick, you are absolutely right. It was leading and not losing.

Well I sure screwed that up!

  353. Niblick May 29th, 2013 at 10:05 pm

6 runs. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

  354. igotid88 May 29th, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Yeah we drafted Chris Davis in 2004 out of high school with the last pick. But he went to college instead.

  356. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 10:07 pm

The Yankees have scored five runs in the last three games: one on a Brett Gardner homer and two because outfielders botched plays.
    ———

Yup that says it all. Actually that is 6 runs now in the last 3 games. Yippee!!

    Offense isn’t an issue though.

  380. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 10:21 pm

How do you get 12 hits and 4 runs?

  381. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 10:22 pm

  385. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Doreen, I don’t know who you’re asking, but on Gameday is shows 12 hits and 4 runs for the Yanks.

  386. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Cool thanks. Should take 2 out of 3. That would be nice after a disappointing series here. I hope Tex and Youk can hit the ground running. Again the bar is set awfully low so I’m not worried about it.

  387. Jerkface May 29th, 2013 at 10:25 pm

Youk was hitting under .100 in his last 9 games, hopefully the layoff means whatever funk was in his bat cleared out.

  388. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 10:25 pm

Everyone knew that the offense wasn’t going to be able to keep it up all season. The lineup totally fell apart when Cano and Wells slumped. Youk is coming back at the perfect time but other guys have to wake up and contribute.

  389. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 10:25 pm

How do you get 12 hits and 4 runs?

Better than the 9 hits and one run we got on Monday night.

Mets get a four-game winning streak and Hefner his first win. Glad to see we have helped the Mets turn their season around and save Terry Collins’ job.

  390. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 29th, 2013 at 10:25 pm

I’d like to see Boesch start to get some more playing time. I think it could be really helpful for the Yanks.

    At least Boston lost.

  392. Captain Clutch May 29th, 2013 at 10:29 pm

Let us hope they don’t find a point even lower.

And for that we turn to…. Vidal Nuno.

  396. Doreen May 29th, 2013 at 10:35 pm

Twice Brignac just missed getting important hits. When you’re going bad, that’s what happens.

    Tomorrow will be better.

    Oh, lovely orioles win.

  397. jacksquat May 29th, 2013 at 10:36 pm

When Youk and Tex are back the lineup suddenly looks better vs LHP than RHP.

    vs. LHP

    Gardner
    Youkilis (DH)
    Teixeira
    Cano
    Wells
    Adams (3B)
    Ichiro/Boesch
    Nix
    Stewart

And when Nunez and Cervelli get back it will be even better.

  398. bruceb May 29th, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Hope Mr. Nuno is able to deal with the pressure of being the man tasked with preventing the sweep tomorrow. Needless to say, they are baying for an a s s whooping over in Flushing.

its a 2 month sample size.

and the guy’s #’s have been going up steadily for a while now.

are you implying that he’s using ped’s for some reason other than steady improvement? did you hear something? or is it just that he’s not a yankee and he’s doing well?

  400. j9d May 29th, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Putting the cross town rivalry aside, I’m glad this happened with the Mets as little Amercan League shift as a result. And it’s almost good the Cinderella run is coming down to earth so there is no illusion that this is sustainable. Let’s hope foe a .500 run until almost all are healthy.

  401. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 10:45 pm

Fantastic double play turned by the SF Giants just now, with a dive and glove flip.

    ========================================
this is so stupid on it’s face.
overbay has put up almost identical #’s as tex last season (which was below average for tex and way above average for overbay)
overbay is extremely steaky over his entire career and has never put up as good an offensive season as tex has.
tex is a better fielder. not that overbay is bad, but tex is better.

  404. Dill Pickler May 29th, 2013 at 10:48 pm

It’s been nothing short of miraculous what this collection of reclamation projects was able to do for the first 6 weeks of the season, but it’s pretty clear that the clock has struck midnight. The Yanks are officially a pumpkin. I wouldn’t expect Tex and Youk to come in and immediately boost the offense much either. Tex hasn’t had a spring training at all, and will have had what, 6 at-bats in his rehab stint? Cano needs to step it up and start doing some damage. He’s had all of 1 extra-base hit in his last 9 games, and just 4 in his last 16 games. I think they need to just stick Boesch out there and let him play, see what he can give them, because the Japanese Methuselah isn’t the answer at this point. What else do they have?

  405. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 10:50 pm

I had that same confidence in Phelps today.

But I feel you, Nuno could be the one to stop the bleeding and start the recovery. Some hits would be nice too.

  406. Ys Guy May 29th, 2013 at 10:51 pm

i dont believe that starting tex this w/e over overbay is going to help this team.
i also dont thing that starting youkilis over adams this w/e is going to help this team

but long term…starting tex and youk over overbay and adams is going to help this team immensely.

  407. UnKnown May 29th, 2013 at 10:53 pm

I hope Tex is reading this and is taking names. He can tweet the names of all the haters on his twitter after he comes back and rakes.

Of course then Donny is going to have to open up the Waffle House after people start with the “See I knew Tex could do it” garbage. People flip flop so much on everything that they don’t even remember half the things they say.

  408. tucker May 29th, 2013 at 10:54 pm

Didn’t see today’s game, but I listened to Sterling … Never heard him sound so, um, sardonic?

  409. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 10:57 pm

    ————–

Everyone knows that Tex is the better player actually it’s not even close. It’s just annoying waiting for him to start hitting every year. Especially this year when the whole lineup is struggling and he is going to return without any timing. They can’t afford for him to take 2 months to start hitting.

  411. tucker May 29th, 2013 at 11:02 pm

Do you think Tex yaps while drinking a Juicer glass in his Hart Schaffner Marx suits?

  412. Nick in SF May 29th, 2013 at 11:05 pm

Re: Nova – when does he have trouble? Is it the second or third time through a lineup? If it is, then perhaps an 8th inning role for him next year is something to think about

Not that I blame him, especially with limited positive inspiration from the team, but Chad’s post-game thread is late tonight. The suspense is killing me (but not quite as much as our offense is killing the team’s mojo).

Brian Heyman will give some post-game notes at some point, I’m sure. Chad will probably be back for the Redsocks series.

  419. jacksquat May 30th, 2013 at 12:00 am

No one is comparing Overbay overall vs Tex. I don’t know why that continues to be posted.

The concern is that Overbay has hit better this year vs rhp than Tex has the past 3 years.

  420. yankeehotelfoxtrot May 30th, 2013 at 12:09 am

    - Amazingly only 3 homers (but also 8 doubles)
    - Montero caught and had 2 hits (none for extra bases)
    - Ackley went 5-6 with a homer and 3 rbi
    - Abe Almonte (of the Shawn Kelley trade) went 6-6 and is now batting .515/.579/.576 in his first 12 games at AAA with 10 RBI, 2 2B, 9R, 3/4 SB, 5BB, 4K

Adams has shown me a pretty good bat but I wonder why he doesn’t get on base much other than by hits and wonder why that is never mentioned here. He’s tapered off a little, it’s all part of the adjustment process for rookies and he will probably be back before the end of the season.

I’ve been weaning myself away from the blog this week and my extended blogcation starts tomorrow.

the Yankees have done really well without so many of their front line players, slumps happen with every team so losing 4 in a row isn’t unexpected at some point in time. It could have been worse if they didn’t kind of luck out with win against the Rays on Saturday.

Phelps really got lit up last night, I don’t know if the forearm injury had anything to do with it-both Cone and Leiter were undecided about that and they know far more about pitching than any of us.

Having both Teix and Youk in the lineup will help the team greatly, the team will score more runs on a consistent basis with them in there.

It’s too bad Grandy got hurt again because Ichiro looks really lost at the plate to me in spite of the two hits last night.

but this from the NY Daily news will make some happy……

“Brian Cashman confirmed Wednesday that Adams isn’t going anywhere, and until the Yankees know Teixeira can stay healthy for the long run, it’s hard to imagine them letting Overbay go.”

  433. Doreen May 30th, 2013 at 7:52 am

When things are going well I seek out every article I can find. :)

I keep thinking about those two almost hits by Brignac. The almost 3 run HR that would have made the score 5-3, and the almost hit later in the game that might have been a double, but certainly would have driven in a couple of runs. He hit the ball well. And his face after each haunted me. He looked so disappointed and sad. Almost disproportionately so.

Baseball can be a cruel sport, and the outcome of any game can be decided by fractions of inches. His spot on the roster may come down to those fractions of inches.

“Adams has shown me a pretty good bat but I he doesn’t get on base much other than by hits and wonder why that is never mentioned here”

He did in the minors though…..I think he’s pressing ….when he first came up he had nothing to lose….now maybe he does and he’s pressing trying to stay in the big leagues. JMO as somebody who has felt that way before fightin for a job…..he had a .380 career OBP in the minors .

“Brian Cashman confirmed Wednesday that Adams isn’t going anywhere, and until the Yankees know Teixeira can stay healthy for the long run, it’s hard to imagine them letting Overbay go.”

That’s great news given that he’s one of their best hitters vs LHP and probably their best defender at 3B

  436. blake May 30th, 2013 at 7:58 am

I didnt see Phelps pitch but if he’s healthy Id consider it a blip and carry on with him in the rotation. Hughes did the same and followed it up with 2 solid starts…….Phelps is a good pitcher but he’s not Felix Hernandez….he’s gonna get hit sometimes if he’s off in location or he makes mistakes

  437. mick May 30th, 2013 at 7:58 am

I have skipped depressing Yankee new in the papers for a long time. Who needs a recap of a lousy game?
    ===================
now you know how i feel reading your off season posts…

  438. Doreen May 30th, 2013 at 7:59 am

    pat,

Even though Adams has options and both he and Overbay are somewhat limited in the versatility department, it would be hard for me to imagine the Yankees not trying every way they can to keep two of the guys who are hitting on the team. Overbay has to stay as an insurance policy for Tex’s wrist.

I would have a little less of an issue with Adan’s, be ause he does have options and can be called back up, and he would continue to play everyday. But I think Adams is better than your average injury replacement player. And Youkilis will surely be plagued with back issues again, won’t he? And he won’t be playing the field on any artificial surface.

The Yankees have too many guys that need DH days…

prolly has something to do with the ball that hit him last time out.

The yanks June schedule is rough….10 game west coaster right in the middle of the month

  441. blake May 30th, 2013 at 8:04 am

If they are gonna keep Nova up as a long guy then is expect Warren to go back down sometime…..

  442. mick May 30th, 2013 at 8:04 am

dont forget about hafner who isnt hitting and is due for an injury.
overbay could be LH DH/BU1B if he’s out.
i’m sure some reporter will pick up on this soon.

    Blake-

I’ve been a huge Phelps supporter but he had nothing last night.

Not trying to make any excuses for him but I wonder if he would have lasted a while longer if Nix had turned a double play. That sure didn’t help things.

Anyway, I agree with you that they should just look at this outing as an anomaly and let him continue to start.

If he continues to throw non-competitive games that would be another story.

  446. mick May 30th, 2013 at 8:08 am

    ——————
I don’t understand them keeping Nova up to pitch occasional long relief, it doesn’t make sense to me since he’s supposed to be working on new mechanics.

We’ll see what happens when all the player moves get made, I suppose.

blake, as for Adams, I agree that he’s pressing a little, last night the Mets were jamming him inside on almost everything and he wasn’t doing much with it-I wonder if that is the scouting report that has gotten around on him.

  449. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 8:11 am

you aren’t crazy, the kid can pitch, just not out of the bullpen, he is much, much better as a starter…

    Blake-

Let’s just hope he have another clunker like that one for a long time.

He needs to come back strong the next time out.

    ;)

  452. pat May 30th, 2013 at 8:16 am

    Doreen

It always goes back to expectations for me. The expectations on some of these players was so low that their achievements are magnified while the returning DL players expectations are so big that their failures are magnified.

  455. mick May 30th, 2013 at 8:20 am

Can see Adams go down as well.

  456. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 8:22 am

    Mick-

Yes. Because he’s the AP replacement.

If he has another solid game tonight he stays on the radar for future consideration IMO.

He’s a great story. A reject who came out of nowhere.

It’s obvious to me that scouting is far from an exact science.

    ;)

    ——————————–
I really like Nuno, he works fast, isn’t afraid to throw any of his pitches for strikes, and knows how to pitch.

The blogcation is to avoid all of the negative commentary on here when Teix gets back, I have already started staying away from the in game threads with positive results.

I really don’t like fans who hate on certain players on the team and pick at every failure. A few years ago it was Jeter, now it’s going to be Teix.

I didn’t see many of the Jeter haters do a mea culpa when he proved them wrong and, when Teix has a pretty good season there won’t be much of that either. I may be wrong but I think Teix is going to surprise a lot of people this year and have a really good rest of the season provided the wrist is OK-he lost some weight, is healthier than last year, and the wrist is going to keep him from overworking on his swing and keep him a little fresher. Just my opinion, we’ll have to wait for the whole season to see if I”m right or wrong.

  459. mick May 30th, 2013 at 8:24 am

Nuno is a pitcher who doesn’t rely on his FB.
He does know how to pitch like a vet.

  460. Doreen May 30th, 2013 at 8:25 am

    pat,

    I agree with that.

It’s also interesting to me that once a player exceeds expectations, two things happen simultaneously – you keep waiting for the production to go back down to what you thought it was going to be, yet, there is disappointment when it does because an adjustment to expectations has occurred.

  461. mick May 30th, 2013 at 8:27 am

    MG-

I used to call that phenomenon the “DWB”.

    The Designated Whipping Boy.

Lot’s of guys have taken a turn.

I don’t care for it either.

  464. MG May 30th, 2013 at 8:34 am

the Yankees really need another right handed hitting outfielder to play against lefties until Grandy gets back.

I know Ichiro has good numbers against lefties but it seems like a mirage-I don’t often look at the other stats but his BABIP against righties is .206 and .408 against lefties, that can’t continue for a whole season. Other than the scratch hits he never gets on base against a lefty either, no walks in 50 ABs.

Maybe it’s time to bring up Mustelier to fill that role for awhile.

  465. blake May 30th, 2013 at 8:36 am

“the Yankees really need another right handed hitting outfielder to play against lefties until Grandy gets back.”

Never happen but if the jays folded and wanted to trade Bautista…..boy would he look good in RF hitting behind Cano

I liked Boesch last night. Nice at bats and that play on the line drive.

  467. austinmac May 30th, 2013 at 8:39 am

I just looked at the Scranton stats, Thomas Neal is really raking down there, maybe he will be in the short term picture as well..

blake, there is probably an Upton available from the Braves, do you want him? :)

  470. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 8:41 am

As it turns out this week of sub par baseball coincided with a really difficult week in my life.

Sometimes events put things in perspective.

Though we all love baseball it is just a game.

This past Monday my Uncle, who was a WWII vet, passed away. He was 86. Fought in the Phillipines.

Imagine. A vet passing away on Memorial day. How amazing is that.

He also went quickly and did not suffer too much which I am very grateful for.

Now that he has passed from the stage he will buried w full military honors at Boulder City veteran’s cemetary.

I apologize for injecting this personal note but it is good to keep things in perspective sometimes.

    ;)

  475. MG May 30th, 2013 at 8:45 am

MTU, sorry for your loss-if he went quickly at age 86 that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I’ve lived through having a parent going slowly and it is a very painful process for everyone.

  476. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 8:46 am

And now, since Life is for the living, it is time for the most important meal of the day.

Next time you feel pissed about a bad play or or a lost game go and hug a loved one instead of throwing a shoe at the TV.

And realize how lucky you are to have them in your life.

    ;)

  477. blake May 30th, 2013 at 8:48 am

“the one you want has also cooled off a lot, hasn’t he?”

A bit…. He’s getting pitched around a lot kinda like Cano…..he will heat up again ….

  478. blake May 30th, 2013 at 8:49 am

J Ups still rockin a .925 OPS which is like .300 pts better than Ichiro

  479. blake May 30th, 2013 at 8:53 am

The Yanks current lineup really stinks vs LHP….however if they can get healthy it has the potential to be really good against them.

    Jeter SS
    Cano 2B
    Tex 1B
    Youk DH
    Wells RF
    Granderson LF
    Adams 3B
    Cervelli C
    Gardner CF

That’s pretty good…..5 of those hitters really mash lefties

  480. MG May 30th, 2013 at 8:53 am

A tale of two players (Justin Upton and Vernon Wells)

    April .298/.402/.734/1.136
    .300/.366/.544/.911
    May .221/.346/.349/.695
    .229/.260/.375/.635

I don’t watch the Braves so don’t know if Upton has hit in bad luck or something else is going on.

Wells is being less selective in May (4 BBs in May, 10 in April)-I see him correcting that and coming out of this slump shortly.

  481. blake May 30th, 2013 at 8:56 am

“I don’t watch the Braves so don’t know if Upton has hit in bad luck or something else is going on.”

I watch them a lot….their offense in general is struggling and they aren’t giving him a lot to hit and he’s being over aggressive IMO…..if Heyward can get going i think that’ll help and be will take off again

  482. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 8:59 am

    Doreen/MG-

Much appreciated. I agree. I’m very grateful he went so quickly and his suffering was minimized.

I only mentioned it to put a little perspective into things.

  483. blake May 30th, 2013 at 9:02 am

    MTU,
Very sorry for your loss. Sounds like he lived a full and meaningful life though. We are slowly losing the WWII vets …..they really did save the world for all practical purposes
