I agree wholeheartedly… I would have never retired his number… He should be honored, but yes, retired numbers should be reserved for all time Yankees
    =================
so if reggie won them 5 straight WS, say got 3 MVP’s, you don’t retire it?

Military vets are usually a good bet as employees. Smart move by Walmart. Good PR and solid personnel strategy.

    At least Adams is playing

Entirely different situation. I think it should be all-time Yanks or guys who were here for their prime years (or majority of their career). Reggie put up great numbers but not enough to offset him not being a Yank for really that long of time. But those numbers you outlined would have been like prime Barry Bonds. In that case, he’s a pretty significant part of Yanks history even in his short amount of time and you could probably go ahead and retire it.

  6. Tyler May 30th, 2013 at 3:39 pm

I wish Nunez was healthy… already tired of Brignac.

  7. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 3:42 pm

I’m guessing that this will be the last game that Wells bats 3rd, which is a promising sign of a return to health for important parts of this liineup.

I am a little over 50 and thought the callon Reggie was 50/50. Remember at the time his number was retired in 93 at a time when the Yanks were desperate for heroes and any association with glory and legacy. I think a lot of that went into the decision. During that era of the “abyss” we retired Rizutto, Guidry, Martin and Maris also. Nothing against them, but they were not Ruth, Gerhig, DiMaggio and Mantle either. I always thought it was finding a to sell the continuity of the brand.

ight now they are about a 92 win team
    ==============
    nothing wrong with that
if they made the playoffs with this team they wouldn’t sellout

    ———————————-
I said that they were a 83 win team and unless they play under .500 ball rest of the way 83 won’t happen…can I split and say 87 now…thanks

  11. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 3:51 pm

As far as this cf of a subway series has gone, I’m not too worried about it because of the unlikely things that have caused it: Mo and Robertson messing up, Nix with a key error at 3B instead of SS where it might be expected, and even Stewart, although his defense is severely overrated, imo, playing especially poorly behind the plate.

The offense does concern me, but it has all season, and to some degree last season as well.

They need more young key parts.

  12. GoldGlove9486 May 30th, 2013 at 3:53 pm

Glad someone pointed out that Reggie shouldn’t have his number required. That’s a disgrace. Maris shouldn’t have it out there either. If you do Reggie and Maris, how do you not do Nettles, Gomez, Ruffing, Raschi?

  13. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 3:54 pm

I don’t believe in retiring numbers. I prefer a ring of honor with the numbers still available to wear.

  14. joeman May 30th, 2013 at 3:56 pm

Cano has dropped his BA about 40 pts in May..

  15. joeman May 30th, 2013 at 3:56 pm

    can’t argue with the math

  16. Doreen May 30th, 2013 at 3:57 pm

    Rich in NJ -

    I like that perspective.

You know I always have my fingers crossed for the more positive outcomes. In this case, that the offense will improve some, and that the players coming back are healthy and productive. And by productive, I don’t mean they have to have all-star production. Just even slightly better than adequate.

I’m not asking for the moon, I think. I hope. ;)

  17. fantasygame101 May 30th, 2013 at 3:59 pm

last day for the B(etter) team till the A(verage) team.

  18. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 4:02 pm

    Doreen

The offense almost certainly will be better, especially v. LHP, with the return of Tex and Youk. That should make Cano better because it will enable him to be more selective at the plate.

But as I mentioned earlier, if they can trade excess pitching for a corner OF, they should consider it, and that includes trading Hughes, who I like more than many here, but if they aren’t going to re-sign him, try to max out his value after a string of good starts.

  19. 4TrainNorth May 30th, 2013 at 4:04 pm

Jay-Z needs to have a chat with Cano.

I wish Nunez was healthy… already tired of Brignac.

    ____________________________________

Brignac has actually been swingin the bat better lately. Hit 2 shots last night. THought the first one was out, but just didn’t carry. THe other one was a laser ran down by Byrd in right. Had a hit off Harvery the night before too and has been playing a good SS. Give him a little more time.

  21. comnsnse May 30th, 2013 at 4:19 pm

Run It Out @3:37, unless they’ve been waiting 6 mos. to a year for a psych appointment.

  22. Doreen May 30th, 2013 at 4:21 pm

I gotta say, I do agree it would be nice to trade some surplus pitching for some additonal offensive punch, but I am concerned that it’s not yet a surplus.

  23. Jerkface May 30th, 2013 at 4:21 pm

Brignac has been trash his entire career, he isn’t the answer at short.

  24. joeman May 30th, 2013 at 4:26 pm

looks like Wil Myers is going to get his shot very soon….

  25. comnsnse May 30th, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Brignac’s plate probs are ; to upright, too long of a swing and as was pointed out several times swings like it’s a three wood and not a baseball bat.

Now unless our esteemed batting coach can change all that, he hits the bricks when Nunez comes back!

Is it time to take out the trash?

  29. comnsnse May 30th, 2013 at 4:37 pm

Rich, exactly what “excess pitching” are you offering and what would you expect in return.

You seriously believe that Phelps, Warren, Nuno would bring a legitimate and ready O.F. and an upgrade?

Hughes/Nova might bring something, but what is the question given other teams have viewed their inconsistent performances just as our own organization has.

Finally this team may well need this “excess pitching” given CC’s troubles. Pettitte’s fragility, Hughes and the rest marginal efforts. And Kuroda’s age!

  30. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:37 pm

so I walked into a taco bell today and saw a metsie in his onesey with his diaper on and drool coming out his mouth….

  31. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 4:37 pm

“I gotta say, I do agree it would be nice to trade some surplus pitching for some additonal offensive punch, but I am concerned that it’s not yet a surplus.”

They have to make some choices between Hughes, Phelps, Nova, Nuno, Warren, and then gauge the market because they really benefited from Wells being crazy good, and I’m not sure that guy is coming back again for more than a week at a time.

  32. Tackelberry May 30th, 2013 at 4:38 pm

    Jerkface May 30th, 2013 at 4:21 pm

    ____________________________________________
He’s a better defensive SS than Nunez. Working with Long might help him with his swing too. Gotta give him a little more time. If you can put up with Nix, you can put up with Brignac for a while

  33. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 4:38 pm

“You seriously believe that Phelps, Warren, Nuno would bring a legitimate and ready O.F. and an upgrade?

I don’t know. The point is to find out.

They pitch better than they hit, and balance wins, not pitching.

  34. Nick in SF May 30th, 2013 at 4:39 pm

Ladies and gentlemen, supposedly the retirement of #44 was the price — or part of the price — of seeing Reggie wear a Yankee cap into Cooperstown. Is this true? I don’t know.

But given Reggie’s status as the crown jewel in Boss George’s big ticket free agent collection in the early years of his ownership and the fact that they won those two titles at the height of that era, it should come as no surprise at all that #44 was retired.

I really think you have to take how he fit into the George Steinbrenner era to understand why his number was retired, even if his overall Yankee resume is so thin.

  35. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:41 pm

so mike f wouldn’t trade harvey for kershaw, ok?

  36. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Reggie’s # being retired is subjective. There are no known criteria for such an honor.
The owner has the last word and I doubt he was the baseball purist we are here.

It’s mostly PR anyway with all numbers; it’s just cloth.

    On Phelps turn.
    Does this indicate anything?

  43. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 4:52 pm

    Rich-

    I’m w. you.

If we have any worthwhile excess players I want to try to trade them. Pitchers, catchers, OF’er’s, etc.

I definitely would like to know what they could bring back.

    ML or MiLB types.

The TD is typically when mid-course corrections are made.

  44. joeman May 30th, 2013 at 4:53 pm

Eric Chavez hurt again..some things never change, right Youkilis fans

  45. Nick in SF May 30th, 2013 at 4:53 pm

    “Reggie’s number retirement isn’t a egregious as Martin’s.”

Russell gave his all and he was the first French-Canadian Yankee catcher. I don’t like it either, but they didn’t ask me.

Oh wait. Neither plays there and it’s not our deal…

  47. MTU May 30th, 2013 at 4:54 pm

Why didn’t they slot AP into Nuno’s spot ?

    A lefty for lefty swap.

  48. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:55 pm

They don’t want Andy and CC back to back.
(you’d think I was Cashman with this insight)

  49. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 4:56 pm

“Russell gave his all and he was the first French-Canadian Yankee catcher. I don’t like it either, but they didn’t ask me.”

And it might have motivated him to play at a discount, of course, wearing a different number…

  50. Tackelberry May 30th, 2013 at 4:56 pm

Looks like weekend matchups with Red Sox will be:

    Fri: CC vs. Lester

    Sat: Hughes vs. Doubront

    Sun: Kuroda vs. Buckholz

  51. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:57 pm

If phelps is hurting they could throw nova after andy.

  52. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:57 pm

    buccholz is out..

  53. Nick in SF May 30th, 2013 at 4:57 pm

    MTU, condolences from out west.

Andy replacing Phelps makes sense, he then slots after Kuroda. At some point they’ll get Hughes after him and Phelps/etc. after that.

  54. mick May 30th, 2013 at 4:58 pm

didn’t matsui and martin have the same #…snap!

  55. joeman May 30th, 2013 at 4:58 pm

Clay Buchholz felt no discomfort is his AC joint during a brief bullpen session Thursday and is slated to start Sunday’s series finale against the Yankees.
Buchholz was scratched from Monday’s start against the Phillies after he slept wrong on his shoulder and felt some discomfort while throwing on Wednesday, so this is good news. The Red Sox may have a backup plan at the ready in case there’s a last-minute setback, but it sounds like he’ll be good to go.
