Gee vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network

WEATHER: What can I say? It’s been a gorgeous day, and it’s giving way to a gorgeous night.

UMPIRES: HP Adrian Johnson, 1B Fieldin Culbreth, 2B Brian O’Nora, 3B Bill Welke

SUBWAY ROOKIE: Vidal Nuno will make his Subway Series debut tonight. It will mark the 12th time a Yankees rookie will make a regular season start against the Mets. Yankees rookie starters making their Subway Series debut have gone 2-4 with a 5.52 ERA (44.0IP, 27ER) in nine starts, with the only two winning pitchers being Brandon Claussen (June 28, 2003 at Shea Stadium) and Tyler Clippard (May 20, 2007 at Shea Stadium).

GO GO GARDNER: Brett Gardner has scored one run in each of his past six games. That ties the second longest streak of his career behind an eight-game stretch from in 2010. He has also hit safely in his past six games, just the second time in his career Gardner has recorded at least one hit and one run in six straight games (also career-high eight in-a-row from April 30 through May 8, 2010).

SNAP THE STREAK: The Yankees have lost four straight games for the first time this season. According to Elias, it was the farthest into a season the Yankees had ever gone without losing more than three straight games since 1955.

UPDATE, 7:41 p.m.: Well, Nuno was able to pitch around a leadoff double in the first inning, but he’s allowed a two-run homer in the second and the Mets have an early lead. Not great when the Yankees need to lean on their offense, but that’s certainly the case now.

UPDATE, 7:52 p.m.: Unable to cash in on a second-inning error, Austin Romine hits into a double play to end the threat and keep the Yankees off the board. It’s still 2-0 Mets.

UPDATE, 7:59 p.m.: Best way for the Yankees to score? Let Robinson Cano hit. He just went deep to cut the lead to 2-1 in the third.

UPDATE, 8:40 p.m.: My gosh, these two lineups are just not very good. It’s already the bottom of the sixth. It’s still 2-1. I think half of the crowd here has fallen asleep.

UPDATE, 8:58 p.m.: What do you know, Kelley just struck out the side again.

UPDATE, 9:31 p.m.: Chamberlain’s wild pitch gets away from Romine and leads to a Mets run in the eighth. It’s now 3-1. Not pretty here at Yankee Stadium.

    And GO GREG D!!!

I hope you manage to get some breeze there tonight!

  3. Niblick May 30th, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I hope Nuno won’t be affected by the fact that this is likely his last start for the Yankees.

  4. Pat M. May 30th, 2013 at 7:06 pm

This is a key game on many levels…….Always liked this edition ( the original ) Met road uni’s…..Tin Cup made a solid point before his self imposed exhile, and that was how the Yanks will handle a 4 / 5 game losing skid…..We’re going to see tonight…Those 2 2-1 loses still sting

  5. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 30th, 2013 at 7:07 pm

want to get banned with this name, i think my reappearance has been bad luck. so i wont be here for a while after i get banned.

ill take this opportunity to respond to realKevin from the other day. tough for many to believe, but i dont say things for shock value. it’s always an internal struggle for me. yes, sometimes i feel happy and joyous and that Martin Richard (boston bombing) is dead. Why? Because boston children turn into boston adults, and boston adults are scum. but then i think about my girlfriend’s 3 year old niece. she’s the biggest sweetheart, but her scum father used to be a Mets fan, converted to a red sox fan when he moved to boston, and has made her into one. do i want anything to happen to her? i dont think so. she’s so adorable, has a perfect smile and just seeing a picture of her can turn any one of my bad days into a good day. so i dont think so. maybe because of the personal connection, and the belief that one day in the future, i can convert her into a yankees fan. who knows. but ultimately, my point is, some days im so angry that im happy that Marty Richard is dead, other days i feel bad about having been happy.

Victoria Snelgrove’s death helped me get through the 2004 ALCS collapse at the time, and I still revel in her death a decade later. She was a red sox fan that died because she was hit in the eye with a rubber pellet by police in the celebrations following the 2004 ALCS. I take pleasure in that because she never got to see a Red Sox world series. You can search her on google.

Costas and Kaat on the call on MLB.

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 7:08 pm

Why is it when other teams go cold they’re in a slump but when the Yanks do, they stink?

Never been able to figure that one out.

Let’s hope that the slump/stink ends tonight. If it does I will be tempted to call it a slump since it’s basically the same guys who have been part of the cold spell!

    GO YANKS!!!

(I think tonight is going to be the night. I really really really do!)

    :)

  8. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 7:08 pm

I am pretty confident the Yankees will win.

  9. Ghostwriter May 30th, 2013 at 7:09 pm

I say they snap the skid tonight. Nuno got some staff stopper in him… If he’s going to pitch in Andy’s place, then he has to fill Andy’s shoes.

  10. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 7:09 pm

“I hope Nuno won’t be affected by the fact that this is likely his last start for the Yankees.”

Niblick, if he’s paid any attention this season, he probably figures he’ll be back again once he goes down!

  11. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Okay, Nuno got the first hit over with. Now he can settle down.

Meanwhile, I think the Mets now believe they can play ball!

    :)

GOOD JOB AUSTIN! Inside out one-hand catch!

  14. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Definitely want Nuno in next year’s rotation. (I’d like him in this year’s but don’t know much room there is at any point in time.)

  15. Ghostwriter May 30th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

NIce pitch by Nuno for strike 1.

  16. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

‘Romine has some skills behind the plate.”

    That he does.

  17. Shame Spencer May 30th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Nice work by Nuno.. only 14 pitches after a bit of a bumpy start to the inning.

  18. Yankee Trader May 30th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Nice pitch by Nuno for strike 3 also!

  19. Ghostwriter May 30th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

My game feed seems to come with about a 30-second delay…

  20. blake May 30th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

I like how Nuno sorta slows you to death then sneaks that 89 mph fastball on you

  21. Jackie Bradley Jr. May 30th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Now, let’s score some runs, and get on these guys!

  25. theREALkevin May 30th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

C R, I still don’t totally believe you about the shock value thing, but I suppose I have to take you at your word. All I can say that your last paragraph is extremely disturbing, sad, and demented. To take a sports rivalry so seriously, that the death of an innocent person from NY’s rival town actually makes you happy…. That is beyond repulsive and you need help. Like I said, I’m skeptical that you literally feel that way 100%, but no matter what the case I implore you to refrain from posting stuff like that here. I hope going forward you can be happier and realize what’s important in life.

Now, come on Yanks, please don’t get swept by the freaking Mets.

  26. blake May 30th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Garden has been playin some ball lately

  27. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

    Hmmmm.

  28. Nick in SF May 30th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

I like you too, blake, let’s keep it at that.

  29. Madrugador May 30th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

You are right Blake. Gardener is a streaky player and he has been hot. I’d like to see him remain hot and PLEASE STEAL A BASE.

  30. Yankee Trader May 30th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Now Gardner will just have to steal third.

  31. Tyler May 30th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Gardner looks good.. just wish he’d be more consistent. He goes through these hot streaks and then goes ice cold for the same amount of time.

  35. PacoDooley May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Never ceases to amaze me how bad a baserunner Gardner really is.

  36. theREALkevin May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    that*

  37. Niblick May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Trisha – you’re probably right but it’s hit to be tough knowing you’re about to be sent down even though you’ve pitched better than anyone else

  38. Tyler May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Opponents hitting .335 against Gee this year.. right guy to get the offense going.

  39. blake May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    I miss good Vern

  40. DCYankee May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Gardner is the worse base runner!!

  41. mick May 30th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    mick,

I don’t think either of them have ever played the victim card. But I do think sometimes this place gets suffocating thanks to a select few and you need to step out and remind yourself that you’re here because you love this team and enjoy talking about them with other huge fans.
    ======================
being talked to is the key. G. Love…..not talked down to….like we didn’t know posada was a good hitting, invaluable catcher for the yankees or that the rook was a generational ruthian ballplayer and that circular lineups are good….this is far from a little league crowd.

  42. Ghostwriter May 30th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

The shine is off the apple for Wells

  45. PacoDooley May 30th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Wells is back to looking lost at the plate – amazing how it can happen. His compact swing and still very good bat speed had him looking great for a while, but he has expanded the zone and now looks totally useless up there. Really sucks that Granderson isn’t available.

  46. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

I can’t see a physical reason for Wells’ struggles. I have to think that he’ll get out of this slump in due course…

Already 0 for 3 with RISP

  66. blake May 30th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

    1st and 2nd with no outs and don’t score…..worst

  67. Madrugador May 30th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

There is a reason why players have career batting average. It seems like this team is regressing towards these averages.

  68. Tyler May 30th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

    Rich-

Just wish he’d be more of a consistent .270-.280 hitter than .300 for 2 weeks and then .220 for the next 2 weeks. Definitely nitpicking but this lineup really needs a guy who can provide some sort of consistency. Jeter’s been that guy for so long..

  69. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Losing Granderson hurt. He too has flaws, but he is much better than the current middle three.

  70. Rich in NJ May 30th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    Tyler

Maybe it will click for him at some point, but it’s partially why he becomes less attractive when he is no longer cost-controlled.

  71. Nick in SF May 30th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Wow, the entire cadre of early-season heroes failed miserably.

It’s like a sign from above, or below.

  72. Pat M. May 30th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

So Tin Cup is gone for 2 months because of a Montero bet with a guy who doesn’t come around anymore ???? Two things about The Cup, he knows baseball and he knows how to get a rise out of folks here….Like GB, great for LoHud ratings. I remember SJ telling me that he bumped into Pete Aberaham while covering a Pats game and Pete expressed how GB was a royal pain in his arse but he had to give The Greenberet space because of his knack for driving up the numbers…….Gardner will never play up to his skillset beyond the leather

  73. jmills May 30th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Rich, thanks for the info on the Devil’s organization, Evel was definitely one of the best jumpers around, Mr. Brodeur :D

The only surviving Lancaster bomber in North America, just took its frequent flight projectory over my head.( There’s one in Britain that was restored a few years ago ) – many were made and flown by members of the largest per capita involvement country in the second world war.

MTU, I understand you have just suffered a loss, just come around here if you need to be amongst, friends.

  74. luis May 30th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    Tyler,

Sorry to cut in… But baseball is about streaks, hot and cold… The secret is to have more hot streaks than cold ;)

“Trisha – you’re probably right but it’s hit to be tough knowing you’re about to be sent down even though you’ve pitched better than anyone else”

Niblick, I absolutely agree with that. And I do think things like that because I believe it’s human nature to be affected by things like that. I guess I always hope against hope it won’t happen.

By the way thank you for bringing it up because I so appreciate being able to have conversations about parts of the game that do exist but don’t always deal with stats, hits and runs. Good job Niblick.

(I also wondered if Wells was at all affected by the knowledge that Granderson was coming back. And will the other players who are being replaced have any “playing” reactions? Just things to think about.)

  76. Shame Spencer May 30th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

    …you can keep that sh*t.

  77. cogen777 May 30th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Costas stated before the game the replacement players were coming back to earth. 3 of the replacements, Brignac, Nix and Stewart have never been regulars and they’ve been around for a while. Wells, Hafner, and Overbay have not played regular for anywhere from 3 to six seasons.
In other words the coach is officially a pumpkin. “Ouch” two run homer.

This story keeps getting written. Like any team, laden with superstars or not, there will be slumps.
    Not implosions, slumps.
If you ask, is it a panic move to force Tex up so soon, with Youk at his side, against the hated red sox (what a coincidence) when attendance is down …it well could be…

But it couldn’t have come at a better time. They didn’t know they would be in the throes of a 5 game losing streak when they made the call, but this team needs a jolt…..Andy on Monday.

  96. jlyanks85 May 30th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

It’s definitely about streaks but Gardner doesn’t limit his cold streaks at all. Real good players are able to limit them as you say. The floor falls in on Gardner when he’s not hot.

  108. ac1 May 30th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Of all our injured players, jeter and arod are the ones known to carry our offense through struggles and they are months away. Tex is no leader in the offense.

  116. jlyanks85 May 30th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

That’s true ac1, sox have a very good ml lineup. Yankees have a lineup full of bench players and cano. Which is why they badly need tex and youk healthy and in the lineup. Along with jeter and even arod.

As much of a great story this has been and fun to watch, we all knew this would happen where these bench players would get over exposed to playing too much.

as I said above… The moment he gets expensive is probably time to cut ties… But he is giving you very good production for what you are paying… I rather have him than Ichiro’s 288 OBP or 629 OPS

  247. MG May 30th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

I still think the Yankees should have an 11 pitcher staff and rotate the 11th guy among a few of the prospects with a Scranton shuttle-the starting pitching is good enough where long guys aren’t needed all the time so why keep someone in the majors sitting around for a week at a time when they can send someone down when they throw a bunch of innings and bring someone up to fill in.

I just don’t get why they haven’t thought of that…

Everything, as blake mentioned, had been up, now he’s starting to locate better and get outs.

The best thing about him is even when he is getting hit he just gets the ball and throws his pitch-compare that to some of the other guys like Chamberlain (I don’t like repeating his name) who start shaking 2 or 3 signs and nibbling when that happens.

I could see Alderson taking the Queens team somewhere in a few years..he has had the free reign that Cashman only wished he had from the beginning…you could see the Mets have some parts and tradable guys and picks, a few beams towards putting up the building

    —————

Sandy’s really good at what he does… I’m not sure they’ll be contenders within a season but if they add the right pieces they could make some serious noise. They have Wright.. if they retain Murphy, maybe put some heat on Tejada by testing out Florez, get a guy like Grandy or Choo (or BOTH!), add a pitcher to slot behind Harvey…..

Oh its struck midnight. 150 to 200 at bats. Personally I only gave it 100 or so, so they have outdone my expectations. I really didn’t expect this much so they have exceeded anything I thought they were capable of.

The myth of guys putting on the pinstripes and becoming better started for me with Stengel and guys like John Mize, Joe Collins, Enos Slaughter, Johnny Sain etc. To begin with 3 of these guys were HOF quality players at the ends of their careers. The thing with Casey is he didn’t over expose these guys and he played them as bench players against teams and pitchers where they could be successful.
John Mcgraw had done the same with Casey for a couple of seasons and Casey didn’t forget.

  338. Captain Clutch May 30th, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Romine is really overmatched. Another ugly swing. They need the fill ins to at least have competitive at bats.

what a great job Nuno just did with the jam job on Wright.

It takes both courage and talent to pitch a good hitter like Wright inside with an 87 mph fastball and get that easy out…

  353. Captain Clutch May 30th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

I’m willing to believe that regulars coming back has an affect on some of the guys who will be replaced and it may have affected their games.

That said – I sure hope the guys coming back tomorrow are in midseason form. I trust Youkilis, not so much Tex.

If this doesn’t turn around quickly – and it might not if the team is in a funk – I don’t want o even think about the games against the Sux. I’m happy at least we’re at the Stadium and not at fenway field.

Anyway, while I don’t think this is either fatal or permanent, it does feel heavy and lethargic.

And I’ll throw this out there again for good measure. If you knew you were going to be losing your job, would you be going along strewing daisies and doing your best stuff without a care in the world? If you say yes, you’re lying to yourself. Nobody losing a job is at peak performance. Unless you’re a sociopath. Then it would be possible.

Who is performing badly that was in danger of losing their job? Wells was not in danger of losing much play time, Ichiro stinks. Ichiro has been terrible all year when he had a guaranteed position. Hafner has a guaranteed spot. Cano has a guaranteed spot.

The only one you can possibly say is ‘feeling the pressure’ is a guy like Overbay, and frankly the entire team has barely hit above their weight in May which is far too large a time frame to blame ‘replacement jitters’.

  433. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Kelley’s another tricky one. When you see him at his best, you can understand why they’ve stuck with him. I think it’s always a matter of them knowing more than we do and therefore making moves (or not making moves) based on what they know. And the moves may leave you scratching your head, but it’s probably because things just haven’t coalesced. But eventually they do, and eventually their moves end up making sense, by and large.

  434. Nilsson May 30th, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Shawn Kelley sporting a 15 k/9 and 2 bb/9. He’s doing what I was hoping Montgomery would do by now. Nice pick up.

Kelley’s valuable as a guy who can come in and get you a K… he’s kind of what D-Rob was early in his career. I’m not sure if he can ever be a consistent 7th inning guy but he’s got a lot of value in the ‘pen.

And I’ll throw this out there again for good measure. If you knew you were going to be losing your job, would you be going along strewing daisies and doing your best stuff without a care in the world?

Who is performing badly that was in danger of losing their job? Wells was not in danger of losing much play time, Ichiro stinks. Ichiro has been terrible all year when he had a guaranteed position. Hafner has a guaranteed spot. Cano has a guaranteed spot.

The only one you can possibly say is ‘feeling the pressure’ is a guy like Overbay, and frankly the entire team has barely hit above their weight in May which is far too large a time frame to blame ‘replacement jitters’.

Hafner might get squeezed out by Overbay. And I don’t Ichiro’s PT is guaranteed. If Boesch keeps hitting, his PT likely will come at Ichiro’s expense. I think that Wells is safe…

anyone, and I mean anyone, who has ever played baseball at any level has only one thought when in the batters box-see the ball, hit the ball.

there is no room for extra thoughts when someone is throwing 80-95 with several pitches.

guys at the major league level have been doing this for their whole lives, they aren’t affected by outside thoughts, they have enough trouble just picking up the ball out of the hand and putting it in play.

my observation is that the Yankees whole lineup has gotten impatient and isn’t being selective enough-some of this is could be from the Tampa series where they hit a bunch of balls hard that got caught, some of it is just part of the ebb and flow of the season.

there always seems to be a headline in the Post at least once per season about the ‘Dead Bats Society’ even with all the regulars in the lineup.

I’ll give Gee credit for throwing lots of first pitch strikes tonight and taking advantage of their impatience-he is having a lousy season but hasn’t been nearly this bad the past two seasons so is at least capable of a good outing.

  515. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 30th, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Pickler – no way to say for sure exactly what it is, except to say it isn’t a whole lot of fun. It could be a slump, it could be player reaction to upcoming circumstances, it could be a whole lot of things.

The truth is we just really don’t know what it is, so it probably ends up being whatever any individual thinks it is. We all agree it’s not a good thing, nor any bit of fun at all.

Bernie Williams was in a fog and they gave him a leave of absence when his dad was sick. I remember a Sux player leaving in the middle of a season and telling the Sux that he was having personal problems (he was going through a divorce) and just couldn’t concentrate on the game. The first season that Beckett had pitching problems when he was playing for the Sux, when he came back for the new season he admitted that his parents were going through a divorce and it affected his pitching. The same thing happened when that closer with the little hook nose that played for the Sux in the 2004 WS – I forget his name – the same thing happened when he and his wife were divorcing, one or two seasons later. His game fell apart. Yet Paul O’Neill played in the world series the day his dad died.

If you’re David Adams and have been in the minors for years and battled through countless injuries etc and finally get a shot in the big leagues you better believe he wants to stick…..and now that he’s got a taste of playing and he knows Youk is coming back I could see him pressing a little….I think he is…..he wants to stay and perhaps he’s getting a little outside himself trying to make it happen

It’s neither a slump nor a reaction to upcoming circumstances. They are just reverting to their respective ability levels.

I believe you. Beyond the shadow of any reasonable doubt. They have exceeded any and all reasonable expectations I could have possibly conjured up.

All of the Yanks’ problems right now, begin and end with their impatience. Once they start making better at-bats, they’ll start scoring runs. That’s the thing that makes watching this funk so frustrating. If they were getting beat 8-1, then it would be alot easier to take.

If they don’t pull this one out, reinserting Youk and Tex in the lineup could be the spark that gets them going again.

Eh I think that’s what you try to do….it’s not always something you can control though.

I think that everybody is trying to be the hero right now, including Adams, Wells, Hafner, et al.

  555. Captain Clutch May 30th, 2013 at 9:30 pm

I am really tired of Joba and his stupid slider in the dirt crap. If he won’t throw his fastball he should be in the minors. The ball got away from Romine because Joba thought the batter would swing at the same pitch over and over in the dirt. His approach is pathetic.

  556. Jerkface May 30th, 2013 at 9:30 pm

“my observation is that the Yankees whole lineup has gotten impatient and isn’t being selective enough-some of this is could be from the Tampa series where they hit a bunch of balls hard that got caught, some of it is just part of the ebb and flow of the season.”

And that makes total sense. Things that happen in the course of a season, having some kind of after-effect.

Baseball really isn’t a simple as it seems.

  561. igotid88 May 30th, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Buchholtz would have pitched against us either way. He was supposed to start last Monday. So he would have lined up for Saturday.

  562. Dill Pickler May 30th, 2013 at 9:31 pm

“Bernie Williams was in a fog and they gave him a leave of absence when his dad was sick. There is no one size fits all.”

Of course these guys are human and huge life events affect them. But if you suddenly turn into a wet noodle at the plate because a couple of injured starters are coming back, then you are too mentally weak to even have made it to the big leagues to begin with. The simplest explanation is most often the answer. These guys have track records over the past couple of years, and they aren’t good. There’s a reason other teams released them/got rid of them.

I’ve played and watched baseball for almost 60 years and I’ve never seen a pitcher get as little out of as much stuff as Joba Chamberlain.

He makes every AB into the final battle of a war instead of just making a good pitch to get an out.

He’s throwing 97, did he really need to throw a breaking ball in the dirt to get Buck, a guy who is slumping and probably couldn’t catch up with even a decent fastball right now?

This is projection. Jobas FB is straight and doesnt induce swings and misses at a very high rate, compared to say Hughes less fast FB, and he throws a normal mix of pitches. You’re saying he thinks he is too smart because he uses his OUT pitch a normal amount. He is just pitching.

I think that’s K #50 for Gardner this season, you think he was a power hitter swinging for the fences

    Yeah, but he runs fast.

and not for nothing he’s not a very good base runner

“Can Gardner really be considered a major league hitter with at bats like that?”

Yes, I think his career .352 OBP and generally stellar defense would constitute him as a major league player. He does need to cut down on his K’s but it’s doable. He’s posting his highest K rate ever, he can get it down. I think by the end of the season he will have posted a solid campaign

There are worse things happening than this Yankee drought.

“A Houston man who died after being brutally bashed and set on fire was targeted at random as part of a sick gang initiation, according to a report.

Esterrell Simpson, 18, a member of the Black Disciples street gang, had never met Carlos Hernandez, 30, when she allegedly took part in his slaying along with two fellow gang members in Houston on April 12.”

If you can even believe that.

I know already what Joe Girardi will say in his postgame, and I’m not even saying he’s wrong. Guys are pressing, everyone’s trying to be the one to get the job done, yada yada yada. The team is in a slump and they’ll just have to fight their way out of it. We know we’re better than this.

    All true.

  653. Duh Innings II May 30th, 2013 at 10:17 pm

Here’s how I look at it:

Boston blew a chance to be in position to build a sizeable lead on the Yanks going into this weekend. They’ll be only two games ahead of the Yanks after tonight which means that the Yanks are in position to be only a game behind Boston if they take two out of three or a game ahead of Boston if they sweep – not bad for a team who hasn’t been able to hit their way out of a paper bag the past four games. Had Boston went into this weekend four games up, not two, they would’ve been in position to be seven games up on the Yanks a best, two at worst on Monday. Btw a win tomorrow and the Yanks are 31-23, a 93-69 pace.

They’re letting the Yanks hang around and who’s coming to whose house this weekend?

I don’t think the Yanks will be swept by Boston which means they’ll win at least one game against Boston and be no more than three games behind Boston on Monday at worst. As badly as the Yanks hit against the Mets, they can’t possibly be the same or worse. Something has to give. Boston always brings out the best in the Yanks. If the Yanks keep pitching like they did against the Mets overall, two out of three or a sweep over Boston is entirely doable.

Also if it were any other series the Yanks would’ve won three out of four as their pitching was solid in three of the four games – seven runs in three games. Phelps was due to have a bad start. The Mets barely won three of the four games. They caught the Yanks at their worst is all. The Mets are still 22-29, 9 games back crap despite the sweep which will mean nothing the day they are eliminated from the postseason in early September.

We can’t go nuts over the Yanks having their first and only long losing streak in the first third of the season. All teams hit bad patches. Good no GREAT job by the Yanks staving off a bad stretch of baseball for so long. They can’t do any worse than they have so far.

  654. Duh Innings II May 30th, 2013 at 10:19 pm

Sorry I meant 1.5 games behind Boston, so the Yanks could be 1.5 games ahead of Boston if they sweep ‘em.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I believe what you said made a great deal of sense. But,
what about this? what if you were to write a awesome post title?
I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your blog, but
what if you added something that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean Game 53:
Yankees vs. Mets – The LoHud Yankees Blog is a little vanilla.
You might glance at Yahoo’s front page and see how they write news titles to get people to open the links.
You might add a video or a related picture or two
to grab people excited about everything’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it would bring your posts a little bit more interesting.
