Addition and subtraction

Kevin Youkilis, Mark TeixeiraYesterday, Joe Girardi refused to officially recognize the obvious: That the Yankees are planning to active both Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis before tonight’s series opener against the Red Sox.

“I don’t like putting dates on it,” Girardi said. “If they’re here (on Friday), I’ll be happy. If they’re here the next day, I’ll be happy. When they get here, they’ll be here.”

Of course, Brian Cashman has made it clear that the Yankees expect to have their corner infielders back in the lineup tonight. And there’s little reason to think that plan has changed. It’s a significant moment for a team that’s been short on right-handed bats all season.

“You want to get your team back together,” Andy Pettitte said. “Youk was here early in the year, and Tex is a huge part of this club. He’s going to be here for a long time. To get him back and hopefully him not have any issues with that wrist, it’s important.”

Assuming things go as planned, Teixeira and Youkilis will bring two different kinds of impact.

The roster
Short term, the Yankees don’t have to do anything drastic with the roster. They’re carrying an extra pitcher, and Andy Pettitte is due to come off the disabled list on Monday, so the Yankees could get rid of two pitchers today. They could option Vidal Nuno — which is probably the easy choice — and then send one of Ivan Nova, Adam Warren, Preston Claiborne or Shawn Kelley to Triple-A. They’d still have a seven-man bullpen and could basically carry an extra hitter for a few days.

Eventually, though, the Yankees are going to have to choose a position player to take off the roster, and just two days ago on WFAN, Brian Cashman indicated that it won’t be the rookie third baseman.

“There’s a chance Adams stays here and fills a role,” Cashman said. “I think Adams has got a role here in the fact that, for me, we’re so anemic against left-handed pitching. … Adams is pretty safe right now.”

So if it’s not Adams, do the Yankees get rid of Reid Brignac and play without a backup shortstop, option Brennan Boesch and play without a fourth outfielder or cut Lyle Overbay and play without one of the season’s most pleasant surprises?

The lineup
The Yankees are about to face, not only the Red Sox, but the Red Sox with back-to-back left-handed starters pitching tonight and tomorrow. The Yankees need right-handed bats, and they’re getting them. The timing couldn’t be much better.

Youkilis and Teixeira will surely take prominent spots in the lineup, and that should allow the Yankees to drop slumping Vernon Wells lower in the order (at least against right-handers). It would seem to also give the Yankees a chance to put Robinson Cano in the No. 3 hole, but Joe Girardi said that’s not necessarily in the cards.

“Your lineup against a right-hander could be different than your lineup against a left-hander,” Girardi said. “We could keep (Cano) in the two hole as well. The one thing about Robbie Cano is you want him to have as many at-bats as possible. That’s the bottom line. It’s very possible we could keep him there.”

Cashman floated the possibility of keeping Adams at third base against lefties, freeing Youkilis or Teixeira to DH on those days. That alignment would fill a glaring hole that’s existed all season (since the days of DH Ben Francisco).

I think this is what I’d do…..I’d keep Adams up and make him the emergency SS and make a decision on Brignac and Nix….probably go ahead and DFA Brignac.

good news but Adams should stay at 3B primarily and Youk is the one who should play a more limited role IMO…..1) because he really can’t play 3B anymore 2) because 3 or 4 games a week might be all his body can handle at this point.

  3. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 9:05 am

Cashman sounded like they were keeping Adams when he was on with Mikey.

  4. blake May 31st, 2013 at 9:10 am

I think they have to keep Adams up….he’s struggled this week but the team can’t hit and he’s one of the few options they have that has the potential to create some offense.

  5. Tackelberry May 31st, 2013 at 9:10 am

    Tonight’s lineup vs. Lester

    Gardner CF
    Youkilis DH
    Cano 2b
    Texiera 1B
    Wells LF
    Adams 3B
    Ichiro RF
    Nix SS
    Stewart C

  6. blake May 31st, 2013 at 9:11 am

    yea I like that lineup.

  7. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 9:12 am

They should keep Adams up and it sounds like they will. But does Youk get to play 3B only because he is Youk? (You know he is going to get hurt again playing there.) I wish Teix were in mid season mode vs. LHP, but I’d rather have even his ST bat in there vs. the lefties than the other not so great options.

  8. joecembrale May 31st, 2013 at 9:13 am

They are starting to feed adams a lot of junk. He is seeing very few fastballs in the strike zone. Its all about adjustments.

I agree this is what they should do… They do have a history of not wanting to lose extra parts, though. That’s the only reason I think it’s still possible they send Adams back down. Cash’s comments are at least encouraging for Adams.

  10. Jesus Bustero May 31st, 2013 at 9:15 am

When in the world is Eduardo Nunez coming back? And Jeter? And Cervelli? I want to get Nix and Stewart out of the lineup.

  11. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 9:16 am

If it were up to me, Youk would be taking all his reps at 1B and Tex would still be rehabbing for at least another week and a half or two weeks.

(By then someone else would be hurt again!)

  12. Tackelberry May 31st, 2013 at 9:17 am

I was really hoping Brignac would show something with the bat, cause he is a very good defender and is realitvely young (27), but he is probably running himself out of the organization with his lack of hitting. He looked like a good young player when he came up with Tampa Bay but his bat just hasn’t developed

  13. blake May 31st, 2013 at 9:18 am

“They are starting to feed adams a lot of junk. He is seeing very few fastballs in the strike zone. Its all about adjustments.”

yea he’s a bit over aggressive at the moment and they are playing off that.

  14. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 9:19 am

It seems like we haven’t heard anything about Eduardo in a while…. I feel badly for the guy, but maybe this wakes up the org that he was never really an option as the future SS anyway. They really need to find some talent there.

There’s still been no update on MLB’s investigation of Aledmys Diaz!!

  15. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 9:30 am

Good morning. Adams needs to stay and play 3rd. Let Youkilis DH vs the two lefties, Lester and Doubront. Hafner looked lost facing the last pitcher of the Mets Fab Four-Ron Darling. Gee?

The Yankees bats were so silent that it seemed like they were facing Seaver, Ryan, Koosman, and Darling!

I like Tackelberry’s lineup except if Boesch is still on the roster, I’d play him over Ichiro. Ichiro plays solid defense but at present offers little more.

  16. pkyankfan69 May 31st, 2013 at 9:30 am

The Yanks have only scored 4 more runs than the Astros.

  17. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 9:30 am

Cashman told Francesa that Nunez’s recovery continues to be slow.

  18. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 9:33 am

I wish Boesch would get the chance to play every day for two weeks.

  19. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 9:36 am

Mustelier’s BA is up to .279, after hitting his 3rd homer last night

  20. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 9:40 am

Musty should probably be playing OF. It could lead to a quicker promotion.

  21. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 9:42 am

Nunez had a relapse a few days ago after swinging all out. They shut him down until the oblique improves. No date given. I don’t think they are enamored of Musty’s D.

  22. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 9:42 am

As much as Nix is maligned, he could be the most irreplaceable player if Brignac is cut today. If he should get hurt, “WHO’S” at SS, and if Cano moves to SS, ” I DON’T KNOW.” is at 2nd?

  23. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 9:43 am

YT, that is scary, mostly because it is true. Imagine! We can’t replace Nix.

  24. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 9:44 am

They don’t have the luxury of prioritizing defense right now.

  25. pkyankfan69 May 31st, 2013 at 9:44 am

Right now the Yanks are on pace to score 666 runs (lowest since 1990 not counting the strike year)… Quite the ominous #, perhaps the Mayans were off by a year.

  26. pkyankfan69 May 31st, 2013 at 9:47 am

They won’t cut Brignac today… Have to assume it will be 2 pitchers going today, Nuno for sure and probably Claiborne… The really tough choice will be Monday when they reactivate AP.

  27. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 9:48 am

Based solely on Jon Lester’s career stats vs Yankee hitters, Overbay needs to be in the lineup tonight and Nix should bat higher, with Ichiro leading off.

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....jon-lester

  28. Russell Munson May 31st, 2013 at 9:50 am

Is it odd that a guy who always complains about people missing when the Yankees are winning is missing now that the Yankees are losing?

  29. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 9:51 am

Rich, tell that to Stewie and to our LH hitting. And when has that stopped them in the past couple of years?

  30. Russell Munson May 31st, 2013 at 9:51 am

I’m going to say that Ichiro’s career numbers against Lester when he was closer to his prime don’t tell us anything about what he would do against him tonight.

    Same with Overbay.

Batter vs. pitcher stats are useless.

  31. Mike in Harrisburg May 31st, 2013 at 9:53 am

Am I correct that Wang can opt out of his contract today? Would hate to see him snapped up by another team.

  32. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 9:53 am

    pkyankfan69 May 31st, 2013 at 9:30 am

The comparisons to the Astros offense are awful. Awful.

  33. Russell Munson May 31st, 2013 at 9:53 am

Wang said he would only opt out if he had a major league offer from another team, I believe.

  34. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 9:54 am

    yf

Although Stew is terrible, I have to admit Romine has been worse offensively.

But ich does not deserve to play over Boesch right now, and the leash on Wells should be short.

  35. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 9:55 am

Looks to me that Overbay is hitting like he’s in his prime! :)

  36. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 10:00 am

Wang said he would only opt out if he had a major league offer from another team, I believe.
    —————————-

    That’s correct.

Via Joel Sherman: Chien-Ming Wang‘s agent has told the Yankees his client will only opt-out of his minor league contract on Friday if he has a Major League contract offer in hand from another team. Friday is the second of five opt-out dates in CMW’s contract. The next three are June 30th, August 10th, and August 31st.

  37. Russell Munson May 31st, 2013 at 10:00 am

They could DH Overbay and play Teix at first.

  38. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:04 am

Rich, I have been saying since ST that Romine’s bat wasn’t ready for mlb. Although I like that he got a chance, but … he would do better to get the reps at AAA where he didn’t hit well last year. Ditto, AFL.

  39. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 10:04 am

They will have to decide on Overbay or Hafner as the DH v. LHP.

  40. 86w183 May 31st, 2013 at 10:05 am

Can’t put Wang on the MLB roster just to hold on to him. He’s dominating AAA hitters, but reportedly still doesn’t have much velocity yet.

Basically three guys have to go by Monday. My guess is the Yanks try to convince Brignac to accept a trip to Scranton and keep Nix. If not, he gets released. Two pitchers will go, mostly likely Nuno and Claiborne.

A new minor league arm worth keeping an extra eye on —- LH reliever Dietrich Enns — he’s 4-0, 0.56 in Charleston with 54 K in 32 1/3 innings. He’s a college guy so they should try and move him along quickly.

  45. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:08 am

Wang’s velo hasn’t been great, plus even though he is a pitch to contact pitcher, his K rates are very low, around 4/9. Also think they want him to continue to work on his offspeed pitches.

  46. blake May 31st, 2013 at 10:09 am

“They will have to decide on Overbay or Hafner as the DH v. LHP.”

neither of those guys should play really ever vs LHP now that Tex and Youk are back…..

Adams, Youk, and Tex should take up the 3B, 1B, and DH spots vs LHP.

  47. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 10:10 am

    Rich

If Adams is still with the team today, then another option vs Lester and Duobront is using Youkilis at DH one day and Tex the other.

I believe the next one to two weeks will be crucial, to see if Tex and Youkilis can remain healthy with no recurrence of their injuries.

  48. blake May 31st, 2013 at 10:11 am

Hafner doesn’t look right at the plate….I think he’s still hurting. Overbay might be a better DH option right now vs RHP

  49. Russell Munson May 31st, 2013 at 10:12 am

“Wouldn’t it typically be Adams 3B – Tex 1B – Youk DH against LHP.”

It depends on if they keep Adams but that’s probably the best configuration against lefties.

  50. blake May 31st, 2013 at 10:12 am

I would play Adams almost every day at 3B…..I’d DH Youk vs LHP and give him maybe a game a week at 1B and a game a week at 3B. That gives Tex a day off a week or a DH day and it also limits Youk’s playing time to an amount that his body could handle.

  51. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 10:13 am

That makes sense YT. My point was really that Hafner hasn’t hit well enough to be assured regular PT.

I like this idea by Axisa

I’d hope they would just blow through the draft pool number and get the three players signed. It’s an extreme circumstance and you can’t pass up a haul like that. The Yankees can spend up to $8,753,140 before forfeiting a future first round pick (that would come with a $596,805 tax) and up to $9,151,010 before forfeiting a future first and second round pick ($1,193,610 tax). If they could add three legit top-15 guys, they’d have to grab them and get them signed. It it costs a pick next year, so be it. They never have access to those guys.

  52. Tackelberry May 31st, 2013 at 10:13 am

I’ve heard its unlikely any team would offer Wang a major league deal right now, so I don’ t think he will opt out this time.

  53. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 10:15 am

From This Mornings article Great Moments in “if The Boss was alive”

Brian Cashman was on his way home from a four-game, two-stadium, one-city sweep suffered at the hands of the New York Mets when he fielded a question that summoned a bad memory from the not-too-distant past.

What would George Steinbrenner have said to you tonight?

Cashman paused over the phone as he measured the chilling thought. An inquiring mind thought the call had dropped before the general manager of the second-best team in New York this week finally broke the silence.

“I can’t even imagine,” he said.

Lefty releiver Deitrich Enns continues to kill it at Low A Charleston. Huled 4 perfect innings last night striking out 6. SHould get bumped up to Tampa soon. Heathcott looks like he is finding it too at Trenton. 4-6 last night with a double and the walk off hit to win it.

    Blake and Rich-

Hafner looked so bad, swinging twice and striking out on balls bouncing in the dirt, one of which hit him in the knee after boucing off the dirt!

Maybe a vision test is needed. I wonder if teams conduct comprehensive vision testing on all their players in ST?

  62. DONNYBROOK May 31st, 2013 at 10:21 am

If I’m manning the trap door, it’s Overbay that goes. TEX and Youk got 1B covered, and realistically, there is just No way Cashman is gonna cut Hafner. I still say Cashman made an “under the table” deal with Adams, meaning Adams goes Nowhere. Brignac is hands-down, the best SS on the team, and Boesch fills the 4th OF’er spot. That leaves Overbay facing the gallows.

  63. Tackelberry May 31st, 2013 at 10:24 am

Draft starts next Thursday. My wish list for the first couple of rounds:

    1st round: Aaron Judge/BillyMcKinney OFs

    COmp round:

    32: Rob Kamminsky LHP
    33: Tim Anderson SS

    Round 2:

    Jordan Paroubeck OF

    Round 3:

    Riley Unroe SS

  64. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:24 am

blake, need a sub, but sounds like they’re still working on CB/slider consistency, which we already knew. No update on when he will move, but DP and the PC think he is likely ready, just depends on open spots in Tampa. I am hoping we get to see him in Sally ASG here, and then he can move up to Tampa…

  65. jacksquat May 31st, 2013 at 10:25 am

If you release Overbay and Teixeira gets reinjured (very possible), Youk goes to 1B full time, Adams is at 3B full time, and you again have no real DH vs LHP. You are also playing crappy players again if you want to rest someone. Not a good idea.

  66. blake May 31st, 2013 at 10:32 am

    thanks YF.

    Tackel,
they have a lot of options…..I’m intrigued by Manaea if he falls to them…..I guess it depends on how big an issue they think his health is. He’s a big lefty though who sounds like he’s got frontline upside…..wouldn’t mind taking a gamble with one of the 3 picks

  67. DONNYBROOK May 31st, 2013 at 10:33 am

Adams of late has been looking at too many pitches. Every AB starts with him in the hole 0-1, 1-2, etc, because of his taking pitches early down-the-chute. Wells is currently an absolute DISASTER, and there is No way he should be flailing in the 3 Hole.

Now we’ll see if the two players returning tonight, with WS rings, can help spark the offense, which was virtually nonexistent the month of May.

    Have a great day everyone.

  70. 86w183 May 31st, 2013 at 10:34 am

If I had to release Hafner or Overbay it would be Hafner. Overbay has been just as productive and gives you insurance for 1B.

He also has a better health track record.

  71. blake May 31st, 2013 at 10:36 am

“Adams of late has been looking at too many pitches”

he’s just in between…..I think he wants to be patient up there but the pitchers are challenging him and he’s getting behind then swinging at slop…..the big leagues is tough….they need to give him time to adjust to pitching that’s better than he’s ever faced.

  72. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:37 am

blake, Manea interests me too. He could be a big risk; not sure how the shoulder tightness etc. will play out… However, we should be going high ceiling. And power lefties don’t grow on trees. With three picks early, go for it (depending on your evals).

  73. 86w183 May 31st, 2013 at 10:40 am

Wells has two singles in his last 26 AB with ZERO Runs Batted In

He’s playing too much…. as is Overbay, but that should change now.

  74. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:41 am

I think Adams will make the adjustments. He has always hit breaking balls.

Lol, yeah too bad we don’t have anyone to replace Wells/Ichi instead of Overbay.

I was stoked when Grandy came back because I thought it would be perfect for Wells/Ichi to sit more, hoping they’d produce better in limited roles. We really need OF help.

It sucks Wells has been coming (almost crashing) back down to earth and Ichi never really got going this year…. I really hope Ichiro can be a bit more consistent because at least with Wells you know he’ll bring a bit of power no matter what his average looks like.

I wouldn’t want a bunch of “stone hands” out there, but I think D is overrated. The NYY had average at best SS and C for most of the last 15 years and won plenty. Anyone remember the “Bobby Abreau Adventure” in RF, but he could really hit.
As old and injured as ARod was last year, he was still one of the more productive 3B in MLB. Same for Jeter at SS. That’s a testament to how talented those guys are.
He ain’t what he used to be but maybe the NYY could pry Rollins from the going nowhere Phils. He’s better than any of the .200 hitters they’ve been running out there at SS.

    YF:

I’m intrigued by Manaea too, but the shoulder injury scares me,since that is a much more complicated issue than an elbow problem. Not sure I would gamble an early pick on him. I’m hearing the most likely scenario for him is that he goes back for his senior season and try to regain his stock since most teams are scared off by his health issues and Boras’s bonus demands

“I’m hearing the most likely scenario for him is that he goes back for his senior season and try to regain his stock since most teams are scared off by his health issues and Boras’s bonus demands”

yea if he falls there is always risk of him not signing….

  82. bruceb May 31st, 2013 at 11:11 am

I’m a fan so I want my team to win each and every night. I can’t begin to tell you how much a sweep by a team as ugly as the Mets has hurt me. But I can’t help but feel it will be poetic justice for ownership and the front office if the slump continues and they drop out of contention.

Aging players with a high risk of injury.
No Major League-ready talent in the farm system.
    Risk of falling attendance.
Slumping ratings for the YES Network.
Quick fixes with no long-term plan.

These are all subjects that have been discussed on this blog for months. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.

  83. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 11:13 am

I really don’t see how this is a difficult decision. You option Nova and Nuno today, then DFA Brignac on Monday.

  86. austinmac May 31st, 2013 at 11:21 am

I like Tackelberry’s line up considering the current options. Ichiro cannot lead off when his OBP is well under .300. Please don’t mistake his numbers from several years ago to the Ichiro we have today.

Bruceb, you are right. Telling the world they are cutting the budget and signing only one year players on the downhill will inevitably have negative consequences. How can it not? If they fall to near .500, NYS will be a ghost stadium and Yes will lose a fortune in revenue.

I would keep Adams, but we must remember his upside is “solid player”. He is not a cornerstone going forward by any means. He can be a helpful part. Absent Cano, they have no cornerstone position players going forward.

  87. Chip May 31st, 2013 at 11:25 am

So in the last couple of days we’ve heard Girardi say that he doesn’t want Cano to be his back up SS (meaning Brignac and Nix both stay) and Cashman say he would like Adams here against LHP (which I disagree with, but whatever)

So assuming these two both get what they want, the out-of-the-box answer is to cut loose the guy who is struggling the most: Ichiro.

Play Wells, Gardner and Boesch in the OF with Nix and Brignac (and yes Overbay) as your back-ups out there.

Send down Nuno as well and then send down Nova when Andy is ready to return. No sense in having two long relievers (Nova and Warren).

    Your roster then is:

    Gardner – CF
    Cano – 2b
    Youk – 3b
    Tex – 1b
    Pronk – DH
    Wells – LF
    Boesch – RF
    Nix – SS
    Stewart – C

    Bench: Brignac, Adams, Romine, Overbay

    Rotation:
    CC
    Hughes
    Kuroda
    Andy
    Phelps

Pen – Joba, D-Rob, Mo, Claiborne, Kelley, Warren, Logan

  88. jay51 May 31st, 2013 at 11:27 am

Someone needs to be DFA’d today since Tex isn’t on 40 man roster…

  89. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 11:27 am

Also, the tough decision on Overbay really doesn’t need to be made until A-Rod and/or Jeter come back. Yes, they lack versatility with two lefties who can only play 1 position (Hafner and Overbay), but I think he’s earned the right to stay and is important insurance until Tex proves he’s fully healed. That, and the utility players they have right now aren’t MLB quality.

Once Andy gets back, you DFA Brignac and play Nix at short full time. Adams is the utility man and can spell Youk at 3B, Cano at 2B and be the emergency SS. Maybe even play Cano at short once every 2 weeks or so with Adams at 2B to get Nix’s putrid bat out of the lineup.

Once Granderson is back, you send Boesch down or move Ichiro. Once Nunez is back, you DFA Nix. Once A-Rod or Jeter is back, you either send Adams down or DFA Overbay.

We also have to remember that we can’t assume everyone will remain healthy until that point. I’m sure the injuries won’t just stop suddenly.

  90. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 11:28 am

“But then you can’t recall Nova or Nuno for 10 days.”

So? They don’t need them right now. They have 13 pitchers right now. You don’t need more than 12.

  91. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 11:29 am

“Someone needs to be DFA’d today since Tex isn’t on 40 man roster…”

They currently only have 38 players on the 40-man.

  92. Wave Your Hat May 31st, 2013 at 11:29 am

I’m not buying into Adams yet. His on base percentage is far from sparkling and his third base defense still looks shaky to me. I can’t see not having a back-up SS. I’m not a Brignac fan by any means but he is by far the best defensive SS the Yanks have available.

Adams is 26. I know the Yanks are always slow to bring their prospects along, but that’s ridiculously old for a prospect. There’s not much “development” left to be done with him. If you’re not an everyday MLB player by 26, you probably never will be.

I just noticed, when did that happen? It seemed like they were stuck at 40 for awhile… (Otherwise what was the need to DFA Rondon unless to create a 40 man roster spot?) Unless DFAing Rondon was needed for Huff bc they were at 40, then DFAing Huff & Francisco without adding anyone to 40 man is how we’re at 38, sorry thinking out loud, lol

Adams will be a good OBP guy in the majors too. I think he’ll be the starting 3b for the team next year. But I don’t think you do him any favors by keeping him on the bench so that you can play him at 3b and DH Youk against LHP.

No, they DFA’d David Huff to activate Joba who was on the 15 day DL so they cleared the 40 man spot already.

he’s been hurt a ton…..that’s why he’s just now getting a shot. True that he is what he is at this age but when healthy that’s been a pretty good hitter in the minors. Career .300 hitter with a .380 OBP in the minor leagues….they need to find out how that translates into the big leagues and you can’t find that out by playing him a couple of weeks then sending him back down.

  102. Chip May 31st, 2013 at 11:40 am

The 40 man roster crunch is going to happen when Cervelli, Cabral and Pineda are ready to be activated (all should happen by the end of June). That doesn’t count Alex or Jeter, neither of whom I am certain we’ll see this year.

That’s at least two – potentially four – players who need to come off the current 40 man roster.

  103. blake May 31st, 2013 at 11:41 am

“And, yes, I know he was hurt which cut into his development, but 26 is still 26.”

also means that they control him through his prime baseball life too….26-32 is right smack in the middle of most players prime age.

  104. Chip May 31st, 2013 at 11:44 am

I would still DFA Ichiro. He’s not playing well at all and it removes the temptation for Girardi to keep running him out there.

When Granderson comes back you can use a Boesch/Wells platoon in one corner with Granderson in the other and Gardner in CF.

If an OF should go down – you call up Zoilo Almonte who, after struggling for a bit, is playing pretty well at AAA.

Speaking of AAA – another way to create a spot on the 40 is by getting rid of Melky Mesa who is just brutal.

  105. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 11:44 am

0 walks in 53 plate appearances. And pitchers test first-time MLB players by seeing if they’ll chase out of the strike zone. I’m not saying he has bad plate discipline, but you think he’d be able to work at least one walk by now.

Doubtful, but I’m sure Cashman would happily take some minor league depth for him. The real question isn’t whether Brian could/should cut or trade him. It’s whether his bosses would let him walk away from the potential of having Ichiro hit 3,000 as a Yankee and the marketing opportunities (both here and in Japan) that would come with it.

They wouldn’t be taking at bats away from Youk by having Adams stay. The plan, likely, would be to have Adams play 3b against LHP with Youk at DH (or at 1b with Tex at DH). Essentially just taking ABs against LHP away from Hafner.

The problem with that is that you don’t face enough LHP for Adams to develop that way.

  113. fantasygame101 May 31st, 2013 at 11:53 am

overbay is the logical choice to be cut. youk and tex can play 1b. Boesch is even auditioning at 1b. But the problem is still ss, c and of. Gardner is a 9th hole hitter faking as leadoff hitter. Nix and stewart are faking like they are starters. And ichiro should just bunt bec. he is a routine groundout.

  114. Wave Your Hat May 31st, 2013 at 11:53 am

He’s not MLB-ready yet even if healthy, so they’ll probably have to return him to the Red Sox. The current relievers have earned their spots and Cabral has earned nothing.

For Pineda, they probably have to DFA Melky Mesa (assuming they don’t do the right thing and release Ichiro), which I wouldn’t lose sleep over. He’d probably pass through and they could outright him. Or Betances, who someone would probably grab (but again, I wouldn’t lose sleep).

No one really understood the Ichiro signing (the 2 years).

On a team where budget isn’t all that important, of course, it’s fine, but I’d love to know if any other team was ready to give Ichiro two years at that amount. No one was willing to come close on what we paid for Youk, and I can’t imagine anyone would have given Ichiro what we did.

They can make you scratch your head with how they evaluate the market….

The MLB average OBP from the leadoff position is .332. The AL average OBP is .328. Gardner is currently at .330 and has been uncharacteristically impatient so far (possibly to try and add offense amongst this putrid lineup). He’s doing just fine from the leadoff spot.

  126. G. Love May 31st, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Whatever happens with the roster today, Lyle Overbay has exceeded my wildest expectations for what he’d ever do for this team.

I do think the threat of the impending return of guys let the air out of the balloon a bit this week, but this offense is so limited a stretch like this was bound to happen.

Let’s see Tex & Youk come back and earn the almost 40 million they’re being paid this season now.

I also would keep Brignac. He made that play in the hole the other night that Nix can’t dream of making. If we’re gonna treat SS as a place where offense is limited, give me defense first then.

  130. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 12:04 pm

“No one really understood the Ichiro signing (the 2 years). ”

Chip was partially right. I think the thought process was that they felt Ichiro’s resurgence once joining the Yankees wasn’t an anomaly, and he’d be able to accumulate the 394 hits he needed to reach 3,000 in the midst of a Yankee playoff push in September 2014.

I think Adams will stay on the team to give them a bat against lefties and give Youk some DH time and days off. Considering how brittle this roster is lets see if Youk, Tex and Hafner can stay healthy. I think that Overbay will be let go in the next 2 weeks or so. He was good but they don’t have a role or room for him on the roster.

I certainly agree with you but the Yankees won’t do it. This is the same team that kept Andruw Jones on the club for a whole season of useless. And Ichiro is a bigger player than Andruw Jones.

As for dumping Nix, I think he’s the equivalent of Mitre to Girardi. Cashman has to take those players away from Girardi.

  150. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 12:12 pm

I would play Boesch in RF this weekend. He has some pop and he is hitting a little bit so let him play. Ichiro’s at bats aren’t even competitive at this point. They can’t keep sending a 40 year old Ichiro out there everyday if he is going to look this bad. I wouldn’t be surprised if he retires after this year.

  151. blake May 31st, 2013 at 12:12 pm

I still think the smart money is on sending down Adams and Nuno. If they really want Adams up here in some RH platoon role with Pronk (essentially) then you send down Boesch and use Brignac, Nix and Overbay as your reserve OF’ers.

  157. Wave Your Hat May 31st, 2013 at 12:13 pm

“I still think the smart money is on sending down Adams and Nuno. If they really want Adams up here in some RH platoon role with Pronk (essentially) then you send down Boesch and use Brignac, Nix and Overbay as your reserve OF’ers.”

Why is it smart to only send down one pitcher when you currently are carrying 13 and have another coming back Monday? It’s almost never smart to carry 13 pitchers and 12 players.

Nova has earned a trip to the minors (quality relief outing notwithstanding), and Warren has earned the longman job, so Nuno is the odd man out.

    “Care to back it up?

    Youk UZR -37.9″

UZR???? Great stat if you’re looking at multiple seasons. A couple dozen games? Laughable. If you knew anything about that statistic, you’d know it’s absolutely unreliable in small samples.

  168. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 12:19 pm

    JF with the saber bomb

The UZR is a small sample, but it backs up the eye test. Youk is immobile and not very good at third. He hasnt been good there since 2008.

Adams has shown some nice range, good glove, and enough arm. He has made some fielding mental mistakes, like letting that ball roll down the line instead of charging for the play, but nothing that says Youk would be better.

The only reason Youk would man third is because of his bat.

  169. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 12:21 pm

“Gardner will not be hitting leadoff for this team with the way he is hitting if jeter is active. The only reason gardner is the leadoff hitter is bec. there are no other choice.”

What??? Gardner would absolutely be hitting leadoff if Jeter were playing. Jeter would be hitting #2 because he’s the ideal#2 hitter on the roster.

  170. blake May 31st, 2013 at 12:21 pm

UZR is unreliable in small samples yes but the eyeball test also says that Adams is better defensively than Youk.

  171. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 12:22 pm

“I certainly think Ichiro could retire…..he’s proud….I don’t think he’ll hang around to be a 4th outfielder or bench guy…..”

I agree. He is proud. So proud that he’s probably deluded himself into thinking he can reach 3000 hits and will hang around as long as someone will let him play regularly. That, and he’s not walking away from the money.

  172. mick May 31st, 2013 at 12:23 pm

  173. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Total Zone also poops on youk and supports Adams as a better defender. And regular stats. All the defensive stats back Adams over Youk.

The scouting report should as well.

Youk is bad at third. He was OK when he first came up at third. Once he was on first he became a gold glover (because 3Bman range at 1st, just like Tex). They moved him back when he was already older and breaking down and he stinks there. He was only playing third because they traded for A-gon. I have no idea why the Yankees decided to put him there as well.

  174. mick May 31st, 2013 at 12:24 pm

adams should stay to keep youk away from 3rd.
he is an injury waiting to happen.

Total Zone had Youk as a +2 at 3B in 111 games last year. Are you really going to weigh 14 games over 111?

Wait, Overbay is outhitting Hafner vs. righties isn’t he?

    So why not DFA Hafner?

I am perfectly OK getting rid of Hafner if the plan is to open DH for Youk full time aka trade for a third baseman of Headley’s caliber down the road. For now they could DH Youk against lefties and Overbay against righties. Overbay is outproducing Hafner vs. righties and can play a position. He’s also less injury prone. Adams would get more playing time. Everybody wins.

  180. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 12:30 pm

And a +6 in 112 games in 2011. So can you please explain why I should think Youkilis is awful defensively based on 14 games this year? When advanced metrics are completely unreliable in such small samples? When he had a bad back for some of them?

So again, Youk is nothing special defensively at this point. Adequate. The bigger concern with playing him regularly at 3B is the wear and tear on his fragile body, not his defense.

  181. gallagwar May 31st, 2013 at 12:34 pm

“Wait, Overbay is outhitting Hafner vs. righties isn’t he?

    So why not DFA Hafner?”

He’s very marginally outhit Hafner vs. RHP. The difference is that Hafner is a quality professional hitter whose primary issue has always been health. As long as he’s healthy, he’s worth having. Overbay’s primary issue is that he’s a terrible hitter. He’s simply gotten some clutch hits this year that have made many Yankee fans forget that fact.

One slogan that was thrown around quite a bit on the company’s earnings call was “Lifestyle Brand”. This is the phrase critics are really attacking. As Coach continues to lose market share they are looking for ways to add revenue from new products. This rebranding is simply a way for the company to stay relevant given the increased competition. While I believe these changes will be short lived, the current market environment calls for new ways to reach consumers. I have to applaud Coach for moving with the market and most importantly not “cheapening” its image. CEO Frankfort stressed that during the quarter Coach “maintained our pricing strategies, protected our brand proposition.”

Their memoirs all have the same pattern. Initially, the young men are astonished by the size of the trees and the cornucopia of exotic animals and plants. Then they reach the villages of the descendants of the Muskogean mound builders. There was surprise in the fact that these presumed “savages” had well planned towns with streets and residential blocks. Their eyes soon shifted to the women, though. All the women, except a few married to white traders, were going topless.
