Lester vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network

WEATHER: Hot but beautiful outside. Some wind blowing from right to left.

UMPIRES: HP Lance Barksdale, 1B Gary Cederstrom, 2B Vic Carapazza, 3B Chris Conroy

STREAK STOPPER: CC Sabathia takes the mound tonight with the Yankees riding a five-game losing streak. It’s the seventh time in his career that Sabathia will start a game with his team on a losing streak of five-or-more games. His team has gone 3-3 in those six previous starts with Sabathia going 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA. He has pitched nine-inning shutouts in each of his last two such outings: May 8, 2009 with the Yankees at Baltimore and September 6, 2004 with Cleveland at Seattle.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The Yankees and Blue Jays will make up their May 19 rainout at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, August 20 as the first game of a day-night doubleheader (1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. start times).

EARLY WIN: Happy to report that the New York media team beat the Boston media team this morning at Yankee Stadium. It’s a 16-9 game, with Anthony McCarron and Pete Caldera each coming up with big RBI doubles for New York. I finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Didn’t have any chances in the field, which was probably a good thing. We’ll play at Fenway Park later this summer.

UPDATE, 7:17 p.m.: Couple of early strikeouts, then Sabathia pitched around a double to give the Yankees a scoreless top of the first.

UPDATE, 7:21 p.m.: Hey, a walk!

UPDATE, 7:45 p.m.: So let me get this straight: The Yankees get Teixeira and Youkilis off the DL, and it’s Nix who drives in the first run? Whatever works.

UPDATE, 7:53 p.m.: And of course slumping Ichiro also gets an RBI. It’s 2-0 Yankees after two.

UPDATE, 8:16 p.m.: Four scoreless for Sabathia. Best he’s looked in a long time.

UPDATE, 8:32 p.m.: Sabathia just struck out the side. That’s eight strikeouts in five innings. That’s already more strikeouts than in his past two starts combined.

UPDATE, 8:38 p.m.: On replay, that’s definitely the right call at second base, but Girardi’s fired up and now he’s ejected.

UPDATE, 8:48 p.m.: There’s an RBI single by Youkilis and the lead is up to 3-0. Teixeira has walked and scored a run. Youkilis has singled in driven in a run.

UPDATE, 9:03 p.m.: Yankees seem generally unhappy with the umpires tonight.

UPDATE, 9:10 p.m.: Sabathia has finally allowed a run on Napoli’s RBI double in the seventh. It’s a 3-1 game.

    Go C! Go Yanks!

  2. MG May 31st, 2013 at 7:01 pm

for those of us outside NY, we get Costas-Kitty on MLB tonight, can’t do any better than that…

  3. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:01 pm

    Go TEX

  4. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:02 pm

Love it MG. Feels like an ALCS Game

    GO YANKS!!! GO CC!!!

I predict CC is going to pitch an amazing game – only because there’s no reason to think he should since the Sux are his nemesis.

  6. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 7:03 pm

Eckersley already predicting this is going to be a tough game for CC and Sux can capitalize on it.

I will now switch to MLB. Nice not to be stuck with NESN for once.

  7. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 7:03 pm

The Yankees could really use a lot of reversals like that this series…

Given how they are playing and potential DL rust on the reinforcements I just want them to not be embarrassed this series.

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 7:05 pm

Um, my MLB says Tigers at Orioles…

So far so good. This can change though.

“Given how they are playing and potential DL rust on the reinforcements I just want them to not be embarrassed this series.”

Hear ya. We probably need sterling pitching to get anything accomplished.

  11. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:08 pm

I think just the fact that you have 4 teams all lumped together right now in the East makes these games so so much more important.

  12. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 7:09 pm

I don’t think we will be embarrassed. I expect us to win two of three.

  13. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Bald Head Vinny coming in loud and clear tonight. I would like to see some electricity in the Bronx tonight. A lot of that I assume will have to do with how things go on the field.

  14. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 7:10 pm

    Put him away, C.

  15. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 7:10 pm

No talk of not being embarrassed!! I expect these guys, a team of professionals, to compete. Just like the Mets dialed it up against us, I hope we do the same against the Sox. It’s gonna be touch if their pitchers are on but let’s not roll over boys!

  16. Ralow May 31st, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Did Pete Abraham K three times? LOL (is he still a traitor with Boston?).

  17. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 7:11 pm

I’m not sure what’s thinner, CC or the crowd behind home plate.

  18. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 7:11 pm

    Buh bye.

  19. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Wow, nice bender CC.. Grab some pine dude

  21. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 7:11 pm

I get stuck with Orsillo and Eckersley. Ugh.

“The Yankees are packpeddling right now. They just got HUMILIATED (his emphasis) by the Mets and the Mets are a horrible team.” – Eckersley.

I don’t know if I’m going to make it through this game. At least Remy makes it interesting. Eckersley is a high-strung drama queen.

    :(

  23. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Rich – Saw your comment in the other thread. Firstly, I think there are trends that happen and right now the pendulum is definitely swung towards extensions but I could see those teams that have spent a lot busting and opening up the market to mid-level teams at some point. That aside, there are two ways to acquire elite pitching so the Yanks will just have to be smarter about how they do business.. you’re definitely right, it will be harder, but not impossible with sound planning. Continuing to draft high end catchers might be a good start! :D

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 7:14 pm

    OH YEAH!

    :)

    Lookin’ good!

F’N Eckersley – “It says it was a strike on the (something) zone but that was a ball. Jonny
    Gomes knows the strike zone!”

I think he could have Harrelson beat!

  27. jackamir May 31st, 2013 at 7:14 pm

Summer in the city…Time for CC to show some extra Velocity…Shutdown inning, PLEASE!!

  28. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 7:14 pm

    Shame

If what the Yankees actually do ever meets Hal’s rhetoric about their intentions toward young players, we’ll be fine. ;)

  29. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 7:14 pm

The crowd is thinner, probably fattening up in the restaurant perks they have behind home plate.

Pat M – thank you so much for that! Hopefully I won’t register as “in market” because I’m in the Sux market!

Seriously, you cannot believe Eckersley’s steady stream of prattle. Just FYI – Lester is due for a great game. That extra day off they gave him is going to pay off. Thus spaketh Eckersley.

    Grrr!!!!

  44. Yankee Trader May 31st, 2013 at 7:23 pm

1st walk for the Yankees in last 106 plate appearances. Did I hear that right?

  45. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 7:24 pm

How awful. Prayers go out to Mookie.

  46. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 7:24 pm

  50. Benny Blanco May 31st, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Gardner has to have the worst base stealing instincts I’ve ever seen.

  51. joeman May 31st, 2013 at 7:26 pm

  53. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Either Gardner is slower than he used to be or he has no idea how to get a good lead.

  54. Pat M. May 31st, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Tricia…..Keep in on file and use it at will……Gradner, I’ve tried very hard to like you but it’s impossible

  55. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 7:27 pm

A hit and run with a guy who wasn’t played or seen major league pitching in a month is really stupid. I understand that Girardi is trying to make things happen but you have to be smart about it.

  56. I Am Winning May 31st, 2013 at 7:28 pm

9 steals 5 caught stealing. Not a very good ratio for our version of a speedster.

  57. joecembrale May 31st, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Gradner has to make that running on that count.

  58. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 7:29 pm

    Pat M – blacked out. :(

Thank you so much though. I seriously might have to either watch with the sound down or maybe just listen to the game because this guy is just a freak homer.

  59. theREALkevin May 31st, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Gardner would have to be usain bolt to be safe on that. That was an absolutely perfect throw by Ross. I mean u can’t do it better. Youk’s gotta put that in play

  60. Nick in SF May 31st, 2013 at 7:29 pm

never liked this guy, he K’s way to much for the type of hitter he is and his base running is not very good for his speed…still don’t understand all the love for this guy

  62. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:29 pm

I think Joe thought at worst if Youk swung through the 3-2 pitch Gardner would steal the bag.

I don’t mind that play. Trying to create and make things happen. When your offense sleep walks through the first 1/3 of the season it is hard not to get impatient.

  63. joecembrale May 31st, 2013 at 7:30 pm

    The Marokowitz jinx

  64. theREALkevin May 31st, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Yes, gardners career SB% of over 80% is truly pathetic

  65. Pat M. May 31st, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Man looks like Naps has trimmed down quite a bit

  66. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 7:32 pm

  76. theREALkevin May 31st, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Pat, 09-11 he was very solid overall. Last yr he was hurt the whole season. This yr he hasn’t been awesome but the constant vitriol on here towards him is annoying cuz overall he’s helped this club and has taken up a small payroll portion. And even tho he hasn’t been great this yr there’s plenty of time to change that

  77. astrocityfan May 31st, 2013 at 7:36 pm

  79. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 7:37 pm

You would think that the Yanks can afford to spend some bucks to get hire someone to work with Gardner on base stealing. He is obviously clueless in that department.

  80. Benny Blanco May 31st, 2013 at 7:38 pm

    Here comes the pressure cooker

  81. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 7:38 pm

  89. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 7:40 pm

Tex and Youk making him throw pitches.

We desperately need that dynamic back on a nightly basis.

I definitely vote slump – as MG says, the ebb and flow of the season – and I am voting slump over.

Now that doesn’t mean we’ll score 100 runs tonight. But it does mean that guys will start hitting again.

.Save the numbers Face, the guy is not an all around good ballplayer especially for a centerfielder…..I don’t want to get into bagging on the guy but come on, really believe this crap ???/

Pat, do you really understand baseball? Do you not see how good Gardner’s defense is? Do you not see how much he gets on base compared with the average player in todays game? He has had above average OBP in every season since his debut. Combined with his speed (he stole 40+ bags in 2011, so it wasn’t only ‘one good season’), he is a major league starter.

Now you may want to make the argument that Gardner is not a starter on a championship caliber team? or a team with all-stars at every position?

But to say that he is a 4th ofer or somehow overrated/a bad player shows a terrible lack of baseball understanding.

I mean you say ESPECIALLY for a centerfielder? Are you high? He is elite defensively, or did you not watch the Mets games? He gets on base. The average centerfielder in baseball hits: .255 .321 .405 .726

He has gotten on base more than Vernon Wells this year. Explain that!

  156. igotid88 May 31st, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Gardner isn’t a guy you build around, but for his cost and his production he’s a great player to have. The problem isn’t Gardner as much as it is our OF in general. He’s performing better than all of them…. that is a problem. We can all agree on that much, I’m sure.

  158. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 7:56 pm

    :)

I’m just saying that I believe that anyone who thought that the Yankees had “hit midnight” weren’t right and that it was just a slump and probably not the last one we’ll see.

Also, it’s easy to exaggerate “how bad the offense has been all season” when the Yanks are in the middle of a slump. But being objective, that’s definitely not the case.

Being able to win every game (but one) when you have a lead in the 6th speaks to more than pitching.

As long as you can admit it, Pat m! You clearly don’t if you are poopooing a player as good defensively as Gardner that also hits better than the average player.

Its as if people have this idea of what Brett Gardner should be (a guy who bunts a lot and steals 100 bags) and because he doesn’t live up to your imagination you kill him while ignoring the good things he does for the team.

He is no all-star, but thats ok. The Yankees don’t have to sign him to a big extension or even retain him beyond free agency, but he is a nice player while he is around. Its a shame that so many can’t see that.

  182. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Then I would suggest you don’t do it. But when the team is coming out of a slump, I will revel in every minute of it.

There is not a team in baseball that doesn’t hit a slump at some point. You have to be able to call it what it is and not get carried away with all kinds of gross exaggerations.

If the offense finally takes off for the first time all year it will be just fine. Tread water with a weak offense have GREAT pitching. Get the big boys back and start to contribute from both sides of the game again.

As we get into the dog days of the season we will definitely need to win some game 9 to 7 and 10 to 8. All Year long the offense has just been disastrous. Happy to be were we are right now only 2 games back and only 1 game in the loss column.

  206. TheStraw May 31st, 2013 at 8:14 pm

Gardner’s OPS+ is 102 this season, eight ponts above his career average of 94. The early HRs have accounted for some if that. If he can keep up that pace, combined with his stellar D, he is a good starting MLB CF. It seems that he will never be a great base stealer, though. His timing instincts just aren’t great for someone of his speed.

  207. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 8:14 pm

  209. Nick in SF May 31st, 2013 at 8:15 pm

Brett Gardner has a career .727 OPS.

Mickey Rivers had a career .724 OPS.

Rivers was slightly better than that during his Yankee years, but not always; he had a .699 OPS in 1978, for example.

Rivers stole 22 bases and was caught stealing 14 times in 1977; 25 SB and only 5 CS in 1978.

Gardner had 26 SB and 5 CS in 2009 in limited duty. In 2010 he had 47 SB and 9 CS and in 2011 he had 47 SB and 13 CS.

  210. jlyanks85 May 31st, 2013 at 8:15 pm

In late and close situations Gardner has 40 steals, 8 CS. So probably not. But everyone picks out his failures and focuses on them.

And he isn’t currently having a very good season stolen base wise, but some of that was precipitated by the lineup injuries and having Cano batting 2nd for most of the year.

  224. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 8:20 pm

  227. Doreen May 31st, 2013 at 8:21 pm

Jerkface, but it’s not consistent. He goes on streaks. And when he’s not on a streak, it looks like there’s too much thought and to o much effort. It doesn’t look easy. And he is clearly not comfortable ” just going.”. I remember even Vince Coleman. He was a total terror.

  228. Pat M. May 31st, 2013 at 8:22 pm

Mickey Rivers was much better ballplayer than Gardner and let’s keep the stats through age 30 for the .300 hitting Mick the Quick

Maybe… But then the case of Gardner being an above average CF shouldn’t be an issue here… He is better than the current avg CF….

  232. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 8:24 pm

If hitting .300 is the level of play we’re aspiring too a certain 1st baseman is in trouble.

    —————————
he K’s as much as power hitters do….he’s on pace for 150 this season & that’s a lot for the type of player he is

Gardner gets on base more than Rivers, he just does more of it via Walk.

Horrible call there. Good to see some fire from girardi. This team needs more of that!

And my two cents on Gardner. In the spring they were absolutely sold on giving cf back to grandy when he came back. Instead they decided Gardner was a better def so much so they made Curtis learne a new position essentially. It’s a recognition of Gardners defensive skills and the fact that run prevention is much more important than it used to be

Jerkface, I just keep, waiting for more from him. And as good as he’s done, I always feel like he could be doing more. Like I said, it just doesn’t look easy for him.

I think he’s good, not close to great, but with glimpses of being able to be very good.

  349. egk May 31st, 2013 at 8:49 pm

For someone who can’t hit for crap and his defense isn’t all that either, Stewart sure is one stupid ballplayer. They had a good shot there to push Lester over 100 pitches.

I think it was either 1976,77 spring training ( they had the day off) that I had the pleasure of meeting both the Quick and Roy White at Hialeah Race Track both were great people and a lot of fun, they were going to meet up with a bunch of players later in the night at the Banana Boat on Commercial Blvd, in Ft. Lauderdale and got a invite but after the track we were on our way to Miami, to this day I wish I went

That was Posada like baserunning to get Lester out of a jam.

I thought I was the only one who thought that about our Jorge. Given the time Stewie has made it to third base, maybe he just got lost.

  352. Doreen May 31st, 2013 at 8:50 pm

Stewart’s made a few mistakes lately. Too bad Romie isn’t hitting at all because Stewart is showing why he has not been an everyday player.

  356. TheStraw May 31st, 2013 at 8:51 pm

Gardner seems to me to be a Garry Maddox type….a good regular CF starter with great defensive skills and an adequate bat. They could do a lot worse than him, but going forward to next eseason it is going to be interesting to see what the total roster looks like (possibly minus Grandy and Hafner). They may need to forego guys like Gardner in order to get more pop in the lineup.

  357. blake May 31st, 2013 at 8:51 pm

Little warmer weather….little better velocity from the big man. Lot of 92s tonight and several 94s ….much better.

Also much better job by the offense….only 3 runs but they have really made Lester work hard

  358. joecembrale May 31st, 2013 at 8:51 pm

  360. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 8:52 pm

Like I said, it just doesn’t look easy for him.

He was a walk on in college, who has fought at every level he has played. Chances are baseball does NOT come easy to him. All the more reason to not get so down on him. We know he works exceptionally hard to maintain it.

He should be lauded, not crapped on. Its easy for some super talented players to roll up to the field and do whatever, shouldn’t powder their butts for it.

  367. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 8:53 pm

I don’t think that Stewart’s body or mind can handle catching everyday. He is used to catching once a week and everyday is killing him. I would like to see Romine catch most of the games for 2 weeks to see if he can get his bat going. But Girardi’s love for Stewart would never let that happen.

Safe or out, Stephen drew made a helluva play on that throw and it reminds us all just how talented and practiced these top level guys are

  405. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 9:00 pm

  471. joecembrale May 31st, 2013 at 9:17 pm

Luis, if it was still 3-0 i would send him out but not when they are a bloop and a blast away from tying it. They hit him a little harder last inning. But what do i know, i am an eternal pessimist.

  481. Nick in SF May 31st, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Trisha, my point is that I didn’t post my opinion on this matter to gang up on you, but the replays they showed on MLB are really conclusive and furthermore the Yankee was not close to the base when Drew received the ball.

I’m sorry that people you squabble with are making fun of you about this but you’re helping them out. It was a close play to the naked eye — I yelled at the TV and startled my dog — but not really close in the replay. Kaat telestrated it. So digging in about being right about this is inadvisable.

You just can’t predict baseball. And you just can’t time the beginning or end of slumps.

The way you can always tell a slump is ending is when hits start to fall. I know it sounds simplistic. Maybe it is.

The thing about a slump is that fans can never hang with it as that. They always have to have it portend something terribly ominous. And no matter how many seasons fans go through, it’s always the same thing. Fan nature 101.

    **********

Seriously, who would have really predicted that the Yanks would come on swinging and the Sux would look flat?

Maybe the Sux beating up on the Phils and the Yanks getting it handed to them was a good thing because maybe the Sux came in with a little too much confidence, whereas you know the Ys certainly weren’t feeling overly confident. One may have blased it a little too much while one may have really felt the need for total focus.

You just can’t predict baseball, Suzyn.

Yes, its very rare, but actually I believe it was probably rare in Mattingly’s time as well since he played in the growing strike out era. Pujols is the only power hitter I can think of that also rarely struck out.

Bonds might be the last guy to do it. 45 Hr, 41 K in 2004.

No, Pujols never did it. The closest he came was 46 homers and 52 Ks.

No the closest he ever came was the season I mentioned, 49 Hr, 50 K :) 2006

  572. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 9:38 pm

I really can’t see the Yanks getting rid of Joba. Maybe it’s because I don’t want them to, I don’t know. But I still see him as a very valuable part of the bullpen. Still wish that he could have gotten back to starting but with CC, Kuroda, Phelps, Nuno, (Andy?), Warren, and Pineda, maybe that ship has truly sailed. No idea who else the Ys have who may be ready next season.

I think that on some levels it’s a sign that Joe isn’t ready to get rid of any of the “core from before” (that would be the vets from other teams), at least not now.

What I really like about Joe, and I truly believe we’re going to see it continually, is that he will mix and match and manage to get all the guys some work.
