Sabathia returns to form to end losing streak

CC Sabathia

The Yankees thought they were getting two players back. They actually got three. Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis played their part, but it was CC Sabathia’s return to form that truly snapped a five-game losing streak and carried the Yankees to a 4-1 win against the rival Red Sox. Sabathia matched a season-high with 10 strikeouts. He walked none and allowed one run through 7.1 innings, snapping a string of three particularly bad starts for the Yankees ace. Behind him, the Yankees matched the highest run total in a week. Teixeira’s leadoff walk started a two-run second inning, and Youkilis had an RBI single in the fifth. Three straight singles, with an RBI from Brett Gardner, led to the final Yankees run in the seventh. Mariano Rivera finished the game with his 19th save, his first since blowing one against the Mets.

Lose to the Mets, beat the RS. You can’t predict baseball. ;)

Nah, I expected us to win.

    “I’ll be there!!”

Luis, that’s what I want to hear! I may have some hockey playoff conflicts depending on the days, but email me your sched/availability. Also, FYI, Trenton’s on the road until Friday.

And agree about Nova. I want to see him starting. Wish SWB had games nearer NY metro when you are here.

astrocity, enjoy the SWB-Durham game. Durham’s a fun team to spy on. Archer is actually starting for the Rays tomorrow.

“I can recall reading an analysis of Matsui’s supposed financial contributions, and they were found to be overstated. It’s probably the same with Ichiro.”

I definitely don’t have access so I am hypothesizing, but for me it the best explanation for his two year deal.

  7. chicken_stanley May 31st, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Wow!! I’m watching on mlb.tv and I see posts about the Yankee win a good 2 minutes before I see it… talk about a delay!

  8. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 10:05 pm

4 runs is a start. That raises the avg run/game at home. I really liked how we saw more pitches tonight.

CC gets the game ball. That was HUGE!!

  9. Shame Spencer May 31st, 2013 at 10:06 pm

Great game by CC, the offense showed up and scored some runs on Lester, and Mo shut them down. Nice.

Now we need to win tomorrow because Buchholz, as much as I dislike him, has been having a really good season so far.. get the win tomorrow and play loose Sunday when KURODA is on the mound.

  10. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:07 pm

Heckuva game by C. Masterful. I am going to watch the whole game again.

  11. luis May 31st, 2013 at 10:07 pm

Excellent game…A much needed win… To none other than the Sux… I hated losing to the Muts… But this win is soothing to the spirit

CC was back in a big way… I think this is the first time this season that i saw a live FB at 93-94 from him… Good to see

The offense did enough to win… For the first time in a while we had a lead of three runs… That felt like a blowout

    Anyway… Good game

“I definitely don’t have access so I am hypothesizing, but for me it the best explanation for his two year deal.”

There was talk at the time about the 3000 hit chase promotions/interest, however meaningless that is when he got the vast majority of hits for another team.

  13. Pat M. May 31st, 2013 at 10:08 pm

Sabathia and the Yanks answer the call, a big win to close out month # 2, 4 to go

Shame, that’s what I mean! And yeah it sucks! We had a few of those games in our pocket too.

That’s what cold stats don’t always tell the story – though they are what ultimately counts.

    :(

  20. Tar May 31st, 2013 at 10:10 pm

Markakis also with a HR in the 9th. Dickerson’s was a 3 run homer.

  21. jlyanks85 May 31st, 2013 at 10:10 pm

Valverde is so awful. Tigers aren’t winning a World Series as long as he closes games.

  24. bruceb May 31st, 2013 at 10:11 pm

And the Mets revert to type by getting pounded 5-1 by the nine-losses-in-a-row Marlins. Now there’s a surprise. Normal service is resumed.

    If Jeter’s was a 10, Ichiro’s is a 1, at least to me.

I wish he played his entire MLB career here, but at this point, no thanks.

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue May 31st, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Straw, I think it’s 22-1 when taking the lead into the 6th inning!

For us maybe its not a big deal, but there is a huge Asian baseball market out there. I’m sure JF can expound on it.

Clutch, see that’s what I mean. For a while the O’s were mired in not-so-good, and people were declaring that they were not going to be a forced to be reckoned with this season.

It was a measly, ole, it happens every season, it will probably happen again, good ole fashioned baseball slump.

Rich, love Ichi, but feel the same way in terms of the relevance to the Yankees and Yankee fans. Although I of course would be happy for him, but not worth signing him to a two year deal for. I’d rather have Melky.

  35. mick May 31st, 2013 at 10:15 pm

so if Joe is saying against a RH Youk will play 3B it means say good bye to adams on monday.

I get that, and I did love the Asian crowds at the Stadium when we had Matsui… but from the standpoint of an on the field “baseball” decision I am just not happy about it. And FTR, not that it is an either-or, but I’d rather have Yu the Yankee inspiring that huge Asian baseball market.

For us maybe its not a big deal, but there is a huge Asian baseball market out there. I’m sure JF can expound on it.

International TV revenue is divided up among all of baseball. They can get advertising from japanese companies and stuff, which I’m sure brings in some amount of money (though more than a US company I dunno), as does some of the merchandising, and ichiro fans paying to go to the stadium.

Maybe they can get Ichiro’s contract paid off, but I dunno about a bonanza.

  41. luis May 31st, 2013 at 10:21 pm

I agree with you. But that Sato billboard behind Home plate says it all for me. Putting myself in Hal’s shoes, I probably take a flyer on Ichiro as well.

Apparently Joe told Kay (reported by Kay on his radio show) that he doesn’t want only one SS, so I think Brignac unfortunately stays. It’ll be Adams going down unless they send Warren down and move Phelps back to the pen.

Yanks as of today have 11 pitchers. When Andy comes back they’ll have 12. But which pitcher could they send down. It can’t be Warren, now that I think about it, as Nova and Nuno have already been sent. They need a long man. So it would have to be Claiborne, but his success makes it hard to send him down, although he is kind of redundant with Joba and Kelley there. They either have to send down Claiborne, send down Adams, or lose Overbay.

luis, the reason I asked is that if he is still in the Sally, De Paula may be playing in an All Star game in NJ that day.

    YF,

What happened to Depaula tonight? Only 3 Ks? Of course he also have up 1 hit and no walks in 5 innings

  105. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Luis, I knew you would like that. :)

  106. luis May 31st, 2013 at 10:52 pm

    Rich and Blake,

Yes… Adams is pressing, but it’s also the adjustment period of every rookie not named Trout… Oh wait, he did struggled too

  107. TheStraw May 31st, 2013 at 10:52 pm

What they really should do is send down Adams to make room for Andy and then send down Boesch and bring Mustellier. That way they have another RH option who can play both 3B and OF.

  108. Tar May 31st, 2013 at 10:53 pm

“But how can the Yankees exploit it?”

Not sure, but anytime Ichiro appears in any ad it benefits the Yankees. I think advertising revenue is probably the most likely way they exploit it.

I also would think ichiro would help solidify the Yankees share of the Asian market. I think that has a value to the team. Corporate goodwill is a balance sheet item ( at least i think, i’m no accountant though).

    re: Yu

His signing is more of a risk reward thing. Ichiro was the safe bet with a track record. Yu was a definite roll of the dice.

Maybe Hal is more risk averse and Ichiro was his way of hedging his not going all in on Yu.

  109. Rich in NJ May 31st, 2013 at 10:53 pm

And with Darvish you also get Iran revenue. They blew it.
    _

That is what I would view as a very, very, very long-term play.

  110. blake May 31st, 2013 at 10:53 pm

    @AndrewMarchand: CC’s average fastball 91.8, season-high, per @msimonespn

But if the revenue is as big as you suggest, wouldn’t that have mitigated the risk?

  113. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 10:55 pm

In terms of any potential secondary market revenue I don’t think Yu was risky. he was only risky from a player potential stand point.

I’m not sure the Yankees get money if Ichiro appears in an ad in Japan. Thats Ichiro’s money. Like I don’t think the Yankees get Jeter’s edge money.

They get advertising in their stadium/YES network.

  114. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 10:55 pm

blake, I didn’t listen to the game, so I don’t know. But assuming his FB/change combo were what they have been maybe he is throwing breaking balls that they are not swinging at/they are making more contact? Hard to say without seeing the game.

  115. mick May 31st, 2013 at 10:57 pm

After the Igawa debacle they chose to stay away from Japanese pitchers… Which I find stupid, since they only bid for him because they missed on Matsusaka… They didn’t wanted to lose their hold on the Japanese market… Not bidding for Yu is the direct result of this… Which in my view was disastrous

  117. Tar May 31st, 2013 at 10:59 pm

“But if the revenue is as big as you suggest, wouldn’t that have mitigated the risk?”

I would think that would put the revenue somewhere between 13 and 50 million. :D

Not sure either, but they do get free advertising and again corporate goodwill which has value.

Pitchfx had C’s 4-seamer on average at 92.58 (topping at 94.35) and sinker sitting at 91.08 (max, 92.65). Pretty good and deadly with location and great offspeed stuff.

They could have got plenty of Nippon-Ham goodwill if they had paid the posting fee :)

I remember when we all debated Jeter’s worth and value to the team. I do find the whole secretive revenue streams of MLB teams fascinating.

In addition to the weather warming up….CC did have surgery this winter….it was minor but still he may be just now getting his arm back to where it was

  132. Tar May 31st, 2013 at 11:23 pm

    YF

Next time you talk to J Alfred say hi for me. I miss him around here. Big start for Hughes tomorrow. Probably more for his own sake, I really hope he shuts them down.

  133. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 11:25 pm

Is Thomas Neal a real prospect? He is batting .344.

  134. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 11:32 pm

Neals not really a prospect, but he is hitting well. Maybe they should call him up. Only problem is he isn’t on the 40!

  135. Jesus Bustero May 31st, 2013 at 11:36 pm

Yes tell J Alfred we all miss him like we miss hemorrhoids.

Dom Brown is on pace for 44 HR. I have a hard time imagining the Phillies were ever willing to trade him.

  136. yankeefeminista May 31st, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Tar, I will. And I hope so too RE: Hughes. He just needs to have his good fastball command.

CC, I haven’t seen Neal play, but I’d suspect not. Still the numbers look pretty darn good. Nice splits too.

  137. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 11:39 pm

Dom Brown is on pace for 44 HR. I have a hard time imagining the Phillies were ever willing to trade him.

They acted like he was garbage, so they had to be at least a little willing. They did everything in their power to box him out of their OFs.

Now willing to sell LOW on him is another question, but I’d bet they would have traded him for middle value (which a lot of teams would not have paid?)

  138. Jesus Bustero May 31st, 2013 at 11:40 pm

Please just let’s assume they were never really serious about selling low so I can fall asleep tonight.

  139. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 11:42 pm

So you’re giving up on the absolutist opinion that they were never willing to trade him?

  140. Jesus Bustero May 31st, 2013 at 11:45 pm

I never held that absolutist opinion but I can try.

  141. Triple Short of a Cycle May 31st, 2013 at 11:45 pm

Guess the Mets are done trying for the year now that the Yanks series is over. What a joke

  142. Captain Clutch May 31st, 2013 at 11:47 pm

Watch the Yanks release Neal and he will hit 20 homeruns for the O’s lol

I like Boesch but the team really needs a 4th outfielder that hits right handed, it would fit the team better. Hopefully there aren’t any injuries but that is probably the only way he would get a chance.

  143. UnKnown May 31st, 2013 at 11:47 pm

Watching the game back on YES it is so funny watching Lester pout on the mound.

Also, I wonder what it would take to get McCann. Love to have that guy. Probably be worth giving up some prospects.

  144. Jerkface May 31st, 2013 at 11:47 pm

Dom Brown was discussed in multiple trades this offseason, so apparently they were willing to deal him :)

  145. Jesus Bustero May 31st, 2013 at 11:48 pm

    Barf.
