Here’s the good news about Hiroki Kuroda starting tonight: He wasn’t at his best last time out.

There are have been four starts this season in which Kuroda allowed more than two runs. So far, each one has been followed by a gem.

April 8: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 K
Next start: 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

April 25: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Next start: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 8 K

May 22: 2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Next start: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

June 2: 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Next start: Tonight in Seattle

“He considers giving up a couple of runs a bad outing,” Joe Girardi said. “If you get a couple of runs for him, then that bad outing is probably not a bad outing, in a sense. His stuff is really consistent. His slider is consistent. His fastball is usually consistent. So is his split. That’s why I think he’s able to bounce back.”
