Just a few quick minor league notes…
• The Yankees have agreed to a deal with their third first-round pick, Ian Clarkin. Jon Heyman reports that Clarkin will take his physical today, after which the deal should become official. The Yankees have already signed their top pick, Eric Jagielo. Both Clarkin and Jagielo signed for slot money. The Yankees other first rounder, Aaron Judge, has said he’s confident he’ll also sign.
• Significant promotion in the Yankees system as Rafael DePaula has been bumped up from Charleston to Tampa. DePaula got off to an incredible start this season, and VP of baseball operations Mark Newman admitted that DePaula had exceeded even the Yankees lofty expectations. He had a 2.94 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 64.1 innings.
• With DePaula and Dietrich Enns promoted to Tampa, Charleston starters Alex Smith and Ben Paullus have been added to the South Atlantic League All-Star game. Charleston catcher Peter O’Brien is also on the All-Star team.
• Bumped up to Triple-A for a start this weekend, Jose Ramirez is with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to stay. It was not a one-start promotion, according to Josh Norris. The Triple-A team needed a starter after the Chris Bootcheck move, and it seemed Ramirez might have been a temporary solution, but the Yankees have decided he’s ready. Ramirez was terrific in big league camp.
