Vin Mercogliano back here from Yankee Stadium filling in for Chad for the night. It’s a big night with Don Mattingly returning to the Bronx for the first time in another uniform, and his press conference will be in about an hour. I’ll have more on that — and all things Yankees — in my pregame notes.

Brett Gardner CF
Jayson Nix SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Thomas Neal DH
Ichiro Suzuki RF
David Adams 3B
Lyle Overbay 1B

well, nobody can accuse joe of pandering to the lohud crowd….

    scary lineup.

Joe Girardi speaks to the media live before this evening’s #Yankees-Dodgers showdown in the Bronx. Watch live: http://atmlb.com/14IqpVE

  4. NYYROC June 18th, 2013 at 3:48 pm

July 2012 article in Fangraphs..PH admits as much. Said the injury in TX changed his stride etc. Said he has never been the same. Talks about Nardi telling him to stop throwing slider. People get all bent he is not “next Clemens” (thanks Giambi). But is not that guy anymore.

  5. Jerkface June 18th, 2013 at 3:50 pm

Ryu is Wellslike in stature and pitchability, will be fun to watch. This lineup not so much.

    Thomas Neal @TdaddyNeal
Any good breakfast spots in Time Square area ???
    ****************************************************
So funny. I wonder where he went.
    Sbarro’s???

    C’mon man

  7. ac1 June 18th, 2013 at 3:53 pm

This is a $230 million lineup?

    1. Brett Gardner (L) CF
    2. Jayson Nix (R) SS
    3. Robinson Cano (L) 2B
    4. Vernon Wells (R) LF
    5. Thomas Neal (R) DH
    6. Ichiro Suzuki (L) RF
    7. David Adams (R) 3B
    8. Lyle Overbay (L) 1B
    9. Chris Stewart (R) C
    _____

    So sick of this argument.
You say $230M like we are a full healthy team.
About 35% of that 230 is on the DL. Really not much you can do about it but play with what you have.

  8. comnsnse June 18th, 2013 at 3:53 pm

My sympathies to Lyle , he should be way over matched vs Ryu.

Hughes is FOS and an excuse maker ,but some here have him getting 4&40mm.

    Ain’t life grand!

Nor was he ever the next Clemens!

  9. NYYROC June 18th, 2013 at 3:54 pm

There’s a deli on every corner Thomas!

  10. Tyler June 18th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Wells at cleanup? Does he have to hit .030 to get moved down or sit down?

  11. NYYROC June 18th, 2013 at 3:56 pm

PH never said he was Clemens. Giambi said PH reminded him of young Clemens. Of course Giambi was probably hallucinating from his daily dose of PEDS.

  12. ac1 June 18th, 2013 at 3:57 pm

The insistence on keeping Wells in there is one thing, but I agree, Ichiro should be hitting clean up before Wells. Again, there aren’t many options to replace him though. Could start Almonte I guess, but my guess is the complaints would be the same.

The fact we are just 3 back should be comforting.
Plus we have finally got to see some of the guys we wanted to see, whether it has worked out so far or not.

  13. ac1 June 18th, 2013 at 3:58 pm

I’ll say im just glad they didnt wait 5 games to DL Tex and make the Yankees play short AGAIN.

  14. comnsnse June 18th, 2013 at 3:58 pm

ac1, but aren’t you assuming our “all healthy” team would actually be a lot better?

Take a good look at the ages of the injured players vs other players in that age group, not very pleasant.

As for Grandy, .240. even with the dingers and the ever declining Tex doesn’t beat a Detroit and maybe even a A’s or O’s squad.

  15. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2013 at 4:00 pm

Whatever. It’s a mess, but it’s all we have to root for.

    ____________

I think at the very least the offense would be more threatening.
We did hit 245 homeruns last year and i think 2nd in runs scored.

    ___

I have to say, even with Detroit’s big time offense and their excellent pitching, i think they are 1 game better than our disaster of a team. Orioles too. Oakland is a lot better this year, but they also get to feast on Seattle, Houston and Anaheim.

This is not the A line-up, but it’s the best Girardi can do for now.
He has to put in the players that are healthy.

I’m fine with Neal and Wells in the line-up. Perhaps Almonte will get a start tomorrow or later
this week. Would be unfair to throw him into the fire so soon. Who knows if he’s still in route
to the park or will arrive on time?

  19. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2013 at 4:04 pm

“We did hit 245 homeruns last year and i think 2nd in runs scored.”

We lost the crazy-split Ibanez, Swish, Chavez, and Martin. That’s 80 or so right there.

  20. gallagwar June 18th, 2013 at 4:05 pm

I’m pouring over Yankee lineups from the early 1990s. This might be the worst Yankee lineup of my lifetime. I’ll see if I can find something worse.

Shame- Have you seen This Is The End?

  22. ac1 June 18th, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Ibanez and Wells sort of cancel each other out. Wells is now on pace to end around the same numbers as he did. Swish I agree we didn’t replace that. Chavez….. we already discussed that earlier. Martin hit .210 and I am very glad we didnt waste money on him. Cervelli and Stewie together have outplayed him, minus his solo homeruns.

sure. look at some of last weeks.
the one with wells 5th and all no names 6-9 was good.
    nix was up 2nd.
brignac romine neal adams i believe were 6-9.

Sorry to butt in but I did and it’s awesome.

The funniest movie I have seen in awhile.

  26. astrocityfan June 18th, 2013 at 4:08 pm

for what he has to work with , i dont think its a bad lineup. Nix has hit well of late and if he and gardner get on then cano has to get some pitches to hit. I dont know who else you stick in there but wells at this point and there is nobody to platoon with Overbay. It really is trying to make lemonade outta lemons. Let’s see if they go back to that team we saw earlier in the year that seemed to be better at small ball and gutting out wins.

Come on people. You cant just replace superstars with superstars every time someone gets hurt. In some cases we are on the replacements of the replacements. There aren’t guys in their prime sitting around waiting for the Yankees to have open spots.

I’d also like to point out young players get hurt too.
Stanton has missed some time this year with an injury
Harper has been out a while.

You can never predict this stuff.

No one could have planned in february that tex would hurt his wrist or grandy would miss this much time, after getting hit in the hand twice, or that even Jeter would reaggrevate his injury and instead of getting back in may, not until august.

It is just a ton of bad circumstances.

  28. mick June 18th, 2013 at 4:10 pm

    Brett Gardner CF

    Robinson Cano 2B
    Vernon Wells LF
    Thomas Neal DH
    Ichiro Suzuki RF
    David Adams 3B
    Lyle Overbay 1B
    Chris Stewart C

at least this is R-L all thru cept for wells and neal but it does rival last weeks.
tho romine and brignac could have made it worse

  29. astrocityfan June 18th, 2013 at 4:10 pm

Did Judge sign today? i thought i saw a Josh Norris tweet about him.

  30. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2013 at 4:10 pm

“Ibanez and Wells sort of cancel each other out.”

Over .100 OPS points isn’t a cancel out.

Ibanez at this point last year: .239 .292 .472 .763
    Wells right now: .230 .273 .383 .656

” Martin hit .210 and I am very glad we didnt waste money on him. ”

That’s a separate issue. You mentioned HRs. They aren’t coming from the C position now.

  54. mick June 18th, 2013 at 4:16 pm

    It’s truly amazing.
Youk and Tex both struck down by the baseball gods.

Back to the underdog B squad, it’s what the fanbase wants.
    Till the real deals arrive.

  55. Russell Munson June 18th, 2013 at 4:16 pm

  56. ac1 June 18th, 2013 at 4:16 pm

Cashman says for the moment they wont look to acquire a new 3rd baseman, will wait for ARod’s return.

Adams has maybe 2 weeks to get his average way about .200 or he will be sent
down and someone else will be traded for or called up to play 3rd.
Let’s not get carried and think the Yankees will carry Adams and his .200 average for

  66. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2013 at 4:21 pm

Adams got a hit Friday night, was robbed of another, and then only played again for 2 AB when Tex left the game.

That’s really not a way to find out what a young player can do.

  67. Russell Munson June 18th, 2013 at 4:21 pm

I can see all 4 of them coming off together in Boston, 1st game after ASG.

  69. ac1 June 18th, 2013 at 4:22 pm

Rich I agree they need to play him EVERYDAY.

    12 million down the drain

  71. Shame Spencer June 18th, 2013 at 4:23 pm

mick – I knew they were shooting scenes for it a few months ago, but I was glad to see how it played out. I went with some guy friends and I (obv) didn’t mention it. I wasn’t sure if they’d like it or not but the audience seemed to respond well to the end. I’ve had that song stuck in my head all week…

I was not under the influence, sadly. It’s the main reason I don’t go to see movies outside the comfort of my own home outside of the general cost ($15 for a movie seems like a crazy extravagance!).

  72. austinmac June 18th, 2013 at 4:23 pm

I knew it was a disc. Some need immediate repair and others may recede. His, obviously was in need of surgery.

And to the discussion earlier about limited other options at 3rd, that is true. But, at the time he signed, other options to improve the team existed for $12M or less, such as Pierzynski.

It wasn’t as if tons of folks on the board(not me)said at the time his back condition made the signing foolish. They were right.

  73. Ys Guy June 18th, 2013 at 4:24 pm

    big opportunity for adams.

  74. Rich in NJ June 18th, 2013 at 4:24 pm

  75. bruceb June 18th, 2013 at 4:25 pm

His baseball career might be over. those back injuries are really tough.

    This.

Game over for the Yankees. That’s for sure.

  76. mick June 18th, 2013 at 4:29 pm

I guess they are hoping for Tex to recover after another DL stint PLUS a rehab this time.
Can’t believe they think this extra rest, which they could have given the 1st time, will help.
Then again, maybe they thought it out and said lets try it and if it doesn’t work we can DL him again, this time with rehab.

Obviously they are thinking of him as his old switch hitting self.
I doubt they are bringing him back to hit RH only..

  77. austinmac June 18th, 2013 at 4:33 pm

Adams may not remove the pins from the voodoo doll. :)

  78. comnsnse June 18th, 2013 at 5:55 pm

With the Sox still chugging away with a good offense and the O’s getting pitching from Gonzo and Tillman plus a very good offense, that leaves just the Jays ……………..who are suddenly not only hitting as advertised but getting Johnson back with a very good last start.

The depths beckon….but then we will get those much needed as advertised high draft picks, right?

I mean that is the reason we are having problems, right?

Fire Cashman, hire Sabean! And fire the Epplers, the Newmans and the Oppenheimers plus any scout that has not carried their weight with respect to prospect reports. drafts and development!

But since I abhor unemployment let’s give them until the end of the season but on written notice that they must produce a game plan to succeed in the cap nonsense era,or else you hit the bricks!
