Old-Timers’ Day: Nice to see the Old-Timers again, brings back memories for them and for many others. I remember how thrilled I was as a kid when our day camp took us to a department store in the NYC suburbs to wait on line to get pictures autographed by three Yankees, including Roy White. He was 26 then. He was here today, wearing his old No. 6, now age 69. Where’s the time going?

Update, 2:12: Nova gives up a single, then an RBI single to Zobrist after a sacrifice, 1-0 Rays, three batters in.

Update, 2:26: Robinson Cano sac fly to the fence in left, 1-1.

Update, 2:40: Kind of a weird inning for Nova, looked great with his off-speed stuff fanning the first two batters, then gave up a hard single to the base of the right-field fence and a long drive to right-center off a 94 mph fastball, but Gardner made the catch.

Update, 2:46: 1-2-3 inning for Archer, who brought along a 1-3 record and a 5.03 ERA.

Update, 2:52: 1-2-3 inning for Nova.

Update, 2:59: Cano gets intentional walk with Gardner on second and two outs.

Update, 3:01: Hafner flies out to end the third, still 1-1.

Update, 3:12: Nova looking good, two more Ks, one single allowed in the fourth.

Update, 3:18: Almonte now 6 for 10 after the double to the left-field corner with one out in the fourth.

Update, 3:20: Nix hit by pitch. Adams bounces into an inning-ending double play. Not a full house here, by the way, for Old-Timers’ Day, patches of empty seats, especially in the upper deck.

Update, 3:32: Nova gets Zobrist swinging to strand two in the fifth.

Update, 3:44: Both teams one run, five hits through five.

Update, 3:52: Nova has a bases-loaded, one-out problem now.

Update, 3:53: No problem. Molina hits into a double play.

Update, 4:02: Almonte now 7 for 11 in his five games, another double. But Nix flies to center to end the sixth.

Update, 4:05: Logan and Kelley warming as Nova gets the first out in the seventh.

Update, 4:12: Nova gets a big hand, leaves after hitting two with two outs here in the seventh. Shawn Kelley takes over. Encouraging outing for Nova.

Update, 4:18: Longoria walks, which is probably a good thing the way he’s going, although it loads the bases. Kelley is out, Logan is in.

Update, 4:22: OK, it wasn’t a good thing for the Yankees. Lefty vs. lefty doesn’t work, either. Loney lines a two-run single into center, 3-1 Rays. Joba comes on.

Update, 4:30: The Yankees did next to nothing with Archer except for Almonte. Now they get a crack at Jake McGee.

Update, 4:35: They get a single for Gardner and that’s it. Logan, incidently, has allowed 10 of his 28 inherited runners to cross.

Update, 4:41: Wells replaces Ichiro in RF. Romine catching.

Update, 4:45: Paid attendance announced at 46,054.

Update, 4:47: Chamberlain strands a runner at second, 3-1 Rays heading for the home eighth. Joel Peralta takes over the pitching.

Update, 4:58: Yankees go down 1-2-3. Claiborne on for the ninth.

Update, 5:08: Claiborne strands two. Besides the weak bat, Romine isn’t looking so hot behind the plate, passed ball in that inning. Fernando Rodney on to try to close it out and help the Rays gain a split.

Update, 5:16: Rodney strikes out the side. Yankees lose 3-1.

GO YANKS!!! GO NOVA!!!! GO TIGRES!!!!

Jays on a tear!!!! 5-0 already.

  2. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Please Ivan. Focus and just throw the way you know how to. Don’t think too much!

Poof! From my mouth to his ears.

  3. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:11 pm

    :(

  4. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:11 pm

It’s the same Nova so far. Everything is up…..

  5. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:12 pm

Okay, you can take a little to get rid of the jitters and shake the rust off. But not too much time.

  6. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:13 pm

    This is crazy.

And Hughes is still in the rotation.

    WTH

  7. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:13 pm

What rust? He has been pitching regularly in aaa. Jitters maybe.

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:13 pm

Well, set up for a DP if he can induce one.

  9. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 2:14 pm

Phil is relaxing right about now.

  10. Rich in NJ June 23rd, 2013 at 2:14 pm

I’m in a park, not watching, but is his shoulder flying open?

  11. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:14 pm

    Big DP

  12. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:14 pm

Got that dp you called for :)

  13. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:15 pm

“What rust? He has been pitching regularly in aaa. Jitters maybe.”

    I meant ML-oriented rust.

Okay, Nova. Maybe that’s just what he needed to start to get some confidence back.

  14. igotid88 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Hughes should be starting on Tuesday. This will be his 3rd start with more than 5 days rest.

  15. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Phil shouldnt relax too much. Nuno is still here and pineda is getting closer.

  16. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 2:16 pm

And the hitters are in the hole, once again.

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:16 pm

“Phil is relaxing right about now.”

They just announced that Phil is scheduled to go Thursday. So is this looking like a Nova-Hughes competition? I was hoping Phil was totally out of the rotation.

  18. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:17 pm

By still here i meant in the system. And on the dl at the moment but not forever.

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:17 pm

“Got that dp you called for :)

    Thank God!

    :)

  20. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Hughes will stay in the rotation until the trading deadline just in case something comes up that makes sense. If he doesn’t get traded and is still pitching bad Pineda will be in play if healthy and pitching good.

  21. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:18 pm

Id honestly rather see nova than hughes. Hughes has had more than enough chances…..

  22. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:19 pm

I also think adam warren has earned a shot at starting….
I know he is the long man but he has earned it like phelps did last year.

  23. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 2:19 pm

    Way to go, fourth outfielder!

  24. igotid88 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:20 pm

    ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:18 pm
Id honestly rather see nova than hughes. Hughes has had more than enough chances…
    —————

Hughes hasn’t pitched in regular rest for awhile. But he also had the same numbers this time last year and ended up doing well.

  25. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:20 pm

Ichiro is one of their best hitters right now why was he bunting? I like the bunt in certain situations but they are falling in love with it and doing it in stupid spots.

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Yikes! 9-0 Jays already. And they’re still batting in the 3rd inning. Freddy got tagged for 7 ER in 2.1.

Teams have their peaks and valleys and they don’t all happen at the same time, of course. It appears that valleys may be happening to both the O’s and (dare I say) the Rays.

  27. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Ichi shouldnt have been bunting with gardy on second base already.

  28. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Nova is only starting today because of the double header they needed another starter. Otherwise Kuroda or Hughes would have had to start today on 3 days rest. Nova will go back to AAA after this game.

  29. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:24 pm

ac1, absolutely agree about Warren. And then there’s Nuno. The Yankees really do have quit a nice little cachet of possible starters.

  30. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:25 pm

I don’t think the Yanks realize that if the 2nd hitter bunts Cano doesn’t get the chance to hit. Nix did it the other day also and it didn’t make any sense.

  31. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:25 pm

“Nova is only starting today because of the double header they needed another starter. Otherwise Kuroda or Hughes would have had to start today on 3 days rest. Nova will go back to AAA after this game.”

Damn. Didn’t think of that. I thought Joe finally smartened up and pulled Hughes.

  32. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 2:25 pm

No way we should be giving outs to this kid.

  33. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Pitching isnt the yankees deficiency. Even betances seems to have found his spot in relief….

  34. exiledintampa June 23rd, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Hughes next start will be on 7 days rest. If he stinks the place up, what does that prove?

  35. Against All Odds June 23rd, 2013 at 2:27 pm

Good AB by Robbie. It’s only a game and 1 AB but his approach seems to be different.

  36. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 2:28 pm

    That he stinks?

  37. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:28 pm

It proves people will always make excuses for hughes’s mediocrity.

  38. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:28 pm

No way that the Sux should be able to win that game behind Dubrount, with the hitting the Tigers have. Obviously Verlander isn’t having quite a Cy Young season this year.

  39. jackamir June 23rd, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Cone puts you inside the numbers. He does his prep work..

  40. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Hughes is pitching on 7 days rest because Girardi wanted to keep Kuroda and Pettitte on regular rest. I don’t blame him those 2 pitching good is much more important than Hughes.

  41. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:30 pm

I absolutely love watching power hitters play small ball.

  42. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:31 pm

I think tex is the biggest yankee killer…..
He returns and the team starts tanking.
He goes out and things start turning around.

  43. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:34 pm

Now’s the test for Nova. Come back and make sure you put up zeroes.

This is what I was talking about with Phelps. He’s got ice water in his veins. He had the bases loaded, got out of it, and came back and pitched like he hadn’t give up a hit. That’s the difference between brawn and brain with pitchers. Well maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement. But if you give in too much to the demon between your ears, you start to overthink pitching. And that’s when pitchers get in trouble. If you put it behind you and just keep pitching, going after the next guy as if it’s your first, you don’t get into that kind of trouble.

  44. AndyFTM June 23rd, 2013 at 2:35 pm

“They just announced that Phil is scheduled to go Thursday. So is this looking like a Nova-Hughes competition? I was hoping Phil was totally out of the rotation.”

Just 5 more weeks trisha then he’ll hopefully be on his bike to the west coast.

Cano with a great AB to tie the game…he has looked focused & locked in this series

  45. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 2:35 pm

“It’s hard to stay like that [for] 100-and-something pitches that they throw,” Mr. Reyes said after the Mets’ victory. “Sometimes, you’re going to miss one or two.”

    Yep

  46. Against All Odds June 23rd, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Cano with a great AB to tie the game…he has looked focused & locked in this series

    ———————

Letting the game come to him and not trying to do too much. It’s not going to last forever but he should always keep in mind how important it is to take what the pitchers give him.

  47. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:37 pm

“I think tex is the biggest yankee killer…..

ac1, I’ve said the same thing. I worried about how his return would affect the psyche of the lineup, and people thought I was crazy. Call it coincidence if you want, but what you’ve noted is dead on accurate.

  48. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 2:37 pm

“Just 5 more weeks trisha then he’ll hopefully be on his bike to the west coast.”

I have to believe that will be the best thing for both Hughes and the Yanks. He’ll be closer to home, and whichever of the parks out there is the most cavernous is the one I hope he goes to.

  50. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Cano seems to have accepted they are going to give him less to hit. Take the walks. Someone will eventually wake up but it does no good to have cano missing everything too….

Walks and stolen bases appear to be up so they are finding ways to have offense.

Yep we see it every year, look at AJ in Pittsburgh. Giving Hughes a change of scenery and a chance to almost start over will help him alot. We just need to make sure we get somethin decent in return. The Yanks arent used to making deals like that

  52. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 2:47 pm

change of scenery would be so nice for phil.

but what he needs much more than a change of scenery is a change up.

w/o it, he’s just going to be a little less mediocre.

  53. tucker June 23rd, 2013 at 2:47 pm

Easier said than done, but Adams needs to adjust on those inside fastballs. He needs to turn on those pitches. He’s getting jammed and hitting weak dribbler after weak dribbler.

  54. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:48 pm

Adams really does need to figure out how to hit those inside fastballs……

  55. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:49 pm

    OH MY LORD CANO!!!!

  56. SoS June 23rd, 2013 at 2:49 pm

Never thought texs contract would be worst than giambi. He cashed his chips and is giving the yanks the bird. Whats the point of having long if no one changes their approach and sticks to their old habbits that been a proven failer.
Bench tex when he comesback d replacement would wake his arse up.
Fire long and get me oneil or mattingly.

  57. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:50 pm

Still dont get diving into first

  58. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 2:50 pm

I’m going to be so happy for Ivan if he pitches well. He seems to have hit a little bit of a stride…

  59. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:52 pm

    Give me mattingly……
I dont think paulie wants a full time job.
Long is a problem but in his defense re tex, he did try to teach him to go against the shift and tex whined and then gave up. Good quality in a 180 m player.

  60. AndyFTM June 23rd, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Michael Cuddyer having another monster day, .341 with 43 ribbies in about 220 AB. I would strongly consider him as a deadline option if Rox continue to fall down the standings.

  61. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Tex was a 285 30/110 guy who hit to all fields when he was with tex\atl\LA, but after taking 25M he says he’s a home run hitter and gets his 30/100 thats what the Yanks pay him for. This belies the all or nothing attitude he seemingly adopted. He hits 35-40 points worse for average and has not problem with his performance. For 25M its not worth it.

  62. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 2:56 pm

Myers took a terrible route on that ball

  64. AndyFTM June 23rd, 2013 at 2:57 pm

    Gardner is en fuego!!

  65. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 2:58 pm

    4th OF strikes again.

  66. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 2:58 pm

nice job calling that gardner ‘homer’, there john!

    “…and it is…..GONE!!!!!”

  67. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 2:59 pm

    Tino too….

  68. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Hafner needs to start making them pay for walking cano

  69. SoS June 23rd, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Jeter dumped long as well. We keep talking about getting back to the dynasty years. The one thing they had were players working the count and playing unselfish ball.
Miss paulies intensity and approach at the plate.
So if your not benching tex, why not bat him 8th like they did to a more proven hitter alex.make him earn his spot.

  71. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 3:03 pm

I definitely don’t think Hafner is healthy. That pitch was right there to hit and he couldn’t do anything with it. Cano is never going to get pitches to hit if Hafner continues to look like crap.

  72. SoS June 23rd, 2013 at 3:03 pm

How would you guys feel about boggs as hitting coach?

  73. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:04 pm

Agreed tex needs to be accountable.
The difference with jeter and tex is jeter dumped long and hit .320. Tex dumped long and hit 240

  74. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:05 pm

    Boggs would work too…

  75. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 3:05 pm

Nice sequence there to Longo…keep pounding the zone Ivan!

  77. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 3:06 pm

What if Boggs willed himself invisible in the dugout?

  78. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 3:07 pm

I just don’t remember him pitching so slowly. But maybe he needs to do that to slow the game down for himself. Hey, whatever he needs to do, as long as it’s working.

  79. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 3:10 pm

Now this is when Nova has to stop beating himself. Forget the guy on base, just concentrate on getting the hitter out.

  80. SoS June 23rd, 2013 at 3:10 pm

I also agree generation nay should be put out of its mysery. Time to turn the page and welcome in el diablos(translation fighting chickens).

  81. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:12 pm

So far nova is outshining what we have seen in 2013 from phil

  82. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 3:14 pm

if mattingly is no better as a hitting coach than he is as a manager, no thanks.

hard to believe oneill would ever take a full time job in baseball, he barely watches the yankees games.

  83. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 3:14 pm

Nova looks really good right now. He is pitching down in the zone and getting good sink on his pitches. I would rather see a pitcher like him who will be here next year in the rotation over Hughes.

  84. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Great hearing Willie in the booth. Absolute class. Sometimes i cant wish enough bad stuff on the Mets for the way he was treated there.

  85. SoS June 23rd, 2013 at 3:15 pm

I think the yanks should trade hughes for laptops. Hughes grew up a sox fan while bungholz a yankee fan.

  86. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 3:17 pm

    Z!

  87. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Mattingly was our hitting coach a while back and i dont remember our offense suffering.

  88. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 3:18 pm

hughes + joba + who else for laptops?

    ———

Yes because every start Hughes had this year was awful. The Rays are also good team for Nova to pitch against. Not a great hitting team and are over aggressive. As we saw yesterday.

  90. UnKnown June 23rd, 2013 at 3:18 pm

Yeah I know they have been around for awhile, but it is really hard to follow what is going on in the game. And Susan is extremely annoying, IMO. I usually listen to the visiting team’s radio broadcast when I have to go the radio route..

Score ZA here now. Let’s get a win going into tomorrow’s off day.

  91. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:18 pm

Soon zoological will be batting behind cano

  92. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 3:18 pm

Almonte has been impressive. Just going with the pitch not trying to pull the ball.

  93. tomingeorgia June 23rd, 2013 at 3:19 pm

Isn’t it fun to watch Zoological hit?

  94. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:19 pm

Hughes had one good stretch this year. Something like 3 starts.

  95. SoS June 23rd, 2013 at 3:20 pm

I’ve got the perfect solution for batting coach. We could get our moneys worth and from what I hear he’s a student of the game loves working with youngsters. Great work ethic. Yes alex come on down!!

  96. UnKnown June 23rd, 2013 at 3:21 pm

It will be interesting to see if ZA can keep hitting once a solid scouting report is developed on him. That is usually the breaking point for most guys trying to stay in the BIGS. Adams is a good example of that right now.

  97. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:21 pm

I really want adams too succeed……
Really needs to learn how to hit the inside pitches or musty will get a chance….

  98. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 3:21 pm

Adams is having terrible at bats

  99. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 3:21 pm

“Nova looks really good right now. He is pitching down in the zone and getting good sink on his pitches. I would rather see a pitcher like him who will be here next year in the rotation over Hughes.”

But here’s the conundrum for now. If you keep Phil out of the rotation his trade value diminishes, whereas if you keep him in the rotation and he manages to eek out a decent game here and there, teams may still want him. So you can’t really afford to have him out of the rotation.

So no matter how Nova looks, he probably is down to AAA for the short run anyway.

And here’s a scary thought. What if the Yanks have no intention of trying to trade Hughes?

    :(

  100. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 3:22 pm

why dont they get real announcers for the radio and just put john in a booth and wake him up to do his ‘A bomb for A rod schtick”

and suzyn can stand by for any possible “HE’S IN THE BOOTH” moments.

meanwhile people listening to the radio can actually follow what’s going on in the game.

  101. UnKnown June 23rd, 2013 at 3:22 pm

  102. tucker June 23rd, 2013 at 3:22 pm

if mattingly is no better as a hitting coach than he is as a manager, no thanks.

hard to believe oneill would ever take a full time job in baseball, he barely watches the yankees games.

The Dodgers barely have hitting and pitching. And their bullpen is not that good.

  104. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 3:22 pm

    Interesting.

  105. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 3:22 pm

“The Rays are also good team for Nova to pitch against. Not a great hitting team and are over aggressive. As we saw yesterday.”

igotid – the Rays this year are really more defined by their offense than anything else. I didn’t look today but as of yesterday they were 5th in the AL in AVG and 4th in the AL in runs scored.

  117. UnKnown June 23rd, 2013 at 3:26 pm

I would bat ZA behind Cano for sure. At least until he cools off.

  118. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 3:26 pm

If they have another option for 3rd base I would send Adams back to AAA. It seems like it’s in his head now and you see him taking a deep breath before every swing.

  119. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 3:26 pm

One thing for a sure, Nova can put hitters away a lot more efficiently than Hughes ever could. No if he can just keep his head straight.

  123. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 3:28 pm

theres no shame in these kids coming up, getting a taste, then going back down to work on what they’ve learned.

adams seems ready to go play every day in aaa and get his head back together.

id be rotating guys back and forth to fill that long man role, too instead of letting warren rot till we need him.

  124. Hassey June 23rd, 2013 at 3:28 pm

    —————

I definitely think that they would but the question is what is he worth right now? He has to stay in the rotation now until the deadline so they can find out. I just hope they don’t over value him because he is young, he isn’t going to get them a top prospect.

  128. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 3:31 pm

“One thing for a sure, Nova can put hitters away a lot more efficiently than Hughes ever could. No if he can just keep his head straight.”

If you are going to talk the talk, you have to walk the walk.

A lot of people on this blog will talk about wanting young kids, but have no patience when they struggle. That is not how it works. They need time to adjust.

Adams has played in 25 games, while platooning and playing a position that he doesn’t have a lot of experience at. How about giving him a little time to settle in. Same for Romine and Zoological (because he will struggle).

Almost no one comes up and tears the cover off the ball from the get go. Have patience….

Who has the longest field in mlb?

SJ nephew gets his ever big league start and AB’s today in Anaheim. Using him as the DH.

I think Robbie was thinking the same thing. Took one right down the pipe.

  156. UnKnown June 23rd, 2013 at 3:45 pm

I would’ve really liked to have seen Alan Porter call that pitch a ball so that Archer would’ve had to come back out of the dugout to finish the inning. Archer isn’t afraid to show people up so far in his ML career.

  157. Hassey June 23rd, 2013 at 3:48 pm

  180. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 3:59 pm

Hughes’s trade value can’t be terribly high right now. So why not just keep him in the pen and trade him at the deadline. Teams know what he can and can’t do. It isn’t going to change dramatically between now and the deadline. He’ll help out some team with death valley as their outfield. Keep Nova in the rotation. Wins are meaningful, especially in this division with the Jays surging and the O’s having the season they are. Oh yeah, and at least temporarily, the Sux, though Bud will do everything in his power to make sure they’re there in the end.

  181. igotid88 June 23rd, 2013 at 4:01 pm

All we need is a Yankee blast. Okay, or a long hit to get Almonte in!

  184. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 4:01 pm

They really need Hafner and Overbay to start hitting. Both of them have been really bad recently. Hafner is almost in Vernon’s territory now.

  185. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 4:01 pm

  186. tomingeorgia June 23rd, 2013 at 4:01 pm

  189. Rich in NJ June 23rd, 2013 at 4:02 pm

  190. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 4:03 pm

These at bats are absolutely brutal. The lineup right now is basically Garder, Ichiro, Cano and Zoilo. Everyone else looks like they are batting blindfolded.

  191. DONNYBROOK June 23rd, 2013 at 4:03 pm

Almonte hit it well, but Johnson has been an adventure in LF All day.

I think both of them got hits yesterday, didn’t they? Someone said they thought Hafner was still hurt because of the way he was swinging the bat. And didn’t Hafner get a hit today also?

  193. igotid88 June 23rd, 2013 at 4:04 pm

If this game goes into extra innings I would like to see Hughes get an inning. Just so he won’t have to go too long without getting into a game.

  194. I Am Winning June 23rd, 2013 at 4:05 pm

    Zoilo continues his terror!

The one thing I’ve noticed about great major league players, is that when you compared their major league career to their minor league career, their major league career numbers are better than when they were in the minors. I feel like a lot of fans look at what they do in the minors and assume that is their top potential. But a truly good young hitter will continue to develop in the majors and continue to progress and in turn it should turn into better numbers.

With that being said, the biggest test for Zoilo, and I know nobody wants to admit to it or even think of it at this point, but the true test is how he will recover when he goes in a slump.

  195. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 4:06 pm

  248. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 4:24 pm

An 0-2 cookie. That is Logan in a nutshell.

He shouldn’t even be on this roster but of course he is because he throws with his left hand and is one of the manger’s pet. Absolutely pathetic.

  249. TheStraw June 23rd, 2013 at 4:25 pm

How does a guy throw two nasty breaking balls like that and then leave the third one up?

But that’s on Nova for the two HBP

  250. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 4:25 pm

    “Should have kept Nova in”

Maybe. But then again, maybe not. I’m sure Joe wanted to preserve the possible win for Nova and thought it was best to get the pen in when he had two on base. He was also starting to lose a little control.

I think that it was the right move getting him out of there.

  251. joecembrale June 23rd, 2013 at 4:25 pm

I dont know if its that he is a oet or he is the only thing in the bullpen that has a heartbeat and throws lefty.

  254. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 4:26 pm

  256. egk June 23rd, 2013 at 4:26 pm

Logan is a worthless piece of crap but Girardi is even wore for continually relying on him when he fails time after time. He has one job with this team as a Loogie and he fails. Yet Girardi keeps putting him out there.

Girardi = The definition of insanity. Keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Clutch, I don’t know where people keep getting the idea that the Rays lineup is terrible! Again, 4th in offense in the AL.

  260. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Then again the offense has been terrible again today. They had 2 or 3 chances to score a couple of runs and failed like usual.

  261. I Am Winning June 23rd, 2013 at 4:28 pm

I don’t know why Kay said he is the best lefty specialist in the league.

For being put in games, and against batters that he will specifically succeed against, his numbers are pretty bad. His walks and strikeouts are okay, but his hits are WAY too high for a lefty specialist and his ERA is VERY high for someone that pitches just to one or two batters at a time.

His ERA is much better against lefties, but his batting average against is way higher against lefties. So much for being the best lefty specialist in the league.

On a side note, if the game were 1-1, you know Joba would have given up extra bases, but because we’re already down, he is stellar. Just Joba being Joba.

They are NOT a weak team!

And if he allowed 12 base runners and only 2 scored (not talking about what Boone let in) he did a hell of a job for his first time back.

  266. bruceb June 23rd, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Can’t believe how few people are here on such a beautiful afternoon. Very surprised by that 1-2 pitch from Logan. Turned into a meatball. Need to get our rally caps on again.

  267. igotid88 June 23rd, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Hope Adams starts hitting so the Yankee don’t have to spend to get another Youkilis. And be a viable backup to A-Rod.

  268. I Am Winning June 23rd, 2013 at 4:31 pm

The Yankees need a pitcher that can come in the 7th, or even 6th in a jam, to help pass it along to the set up man and closer for 8/9. The issue is that the Yankees just don’t have anybody for that role, so Girardi needs to mix and match. Joba, Logan, and Claiborne are all inconsistent and unreliable at this point, so he puts pitchers in based off of the match ups, you can’t blame him for that.

  272. 86w183 June 23rd, 2013 at 4:31 pm

This ERA vs LH or RH batters is pure nonsense. Unless every batter you face in an inning bats from the same side you can’t calculate it.

I’m with ac1 — This is on Girardi for not recognizing that Loney is killing LHP this year AND that he had a hit against Logan on Thursday. This is also on the offense for another day of blown chances… especially Nix and Adams who should not hit back-to-back.

walks and strikeouts “okay”? How about 4 walks to 28 strikeouts? That’s more than ok. 21 hits in 19.2 ip, not great but ok.

    ERA very high? 2.29

Probably about the only thing you could criticize is % of inherited runners scored, and with numbers like Logan’s that’s going to balance out.

Tampa Bay’s not exactly leading the pack in most offensive metrics, although they are good in runs scored where they are, in fact, 4th in the AL.
They’re 6th in OPS, 6th in BA, basically slightly better than league average at almost everything.
12 baserunners in 6 2/3 is not exactly spectacular against anyone.
Nova did a good job controlling the damage, for sure.

The problem is, the Yankees offense is near the bottom in almost every offensive metric.

the way people talk about grandy on here, you’d never know he came in 4th in the mvp voting the year before last and made the ASG 3 of the last 4 seasons.

id take him back, especially if cano leaves.

“the way people talk about grandy on here, you’d never know he came in 4th in the mvp voting the year before last and made the ASG 3 of the last 4 seasons.”

That’s because his production that season was his highest since 2007, and he showed no indication last year that it was anything but anomalous.

That said, on this team, his typical production would be welcome.

  354. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 4:57 pm

bill madden said this morning that the yankees think the comparable contract for robbie is brandon phillips (6 yrs/ $72M) and said their stats are about the same.

he also said that he sees “NO WAY” any team including the yankees go 8 years for him.

  358. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 4:58 pm

Right now they don’t have anyone to bat in the middle of the order. It starts off good with Gardner, Ichiro and Cano and then the lineup totally falls off a cliff.

  359. ac1 June 23rd, 2013 at 4:59 pm

  366. DONNYBROOK June 23rd, 2013 at 5:02 pm

Chowder head announcers blaming the Pen, but with only 1 run to your credit, how do you do that?

  367. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 5:02 pm

So what is it. Every damn time the Yankees don’t have a high scoring game we’re going to hear the Greek chorus go on and on? And of course it can NEVER be about decent pitching from the opposition. How about showing up when they’re winning games and adding something positive to the forum.

  368. Captain Clutch June 23rd, 2013 at 5:03 pm

Cano is going to get close to $200m with options in the contract. If the Yanks want to be cheap he will leave. They aren’t getting a home town discount or anything. Someone will pay him what he wants.

  369. DONNYBROOK June 23rd, 2013 at 5:03 pm

That’s what I mean. It’s pretty deceiving because it makes the Stadium look empty, but yes, a lot are inside. And for the most expensive seats, those people can go into glassed-in rooms where they are fed endless food, for the bubble, and they can watch the game on large-screened televisions.

All the bells and whistles, but it really takes away from the excitement of a ball park.

Thoroughly enjoyed Old Timers’ Day…just a shame they had to follow it with the toothless NY Yankees circa 2013. Archer and the Rays’ pen pitched well, but unlike yesterday, we just couldn’t get the big hit. Disappointing the way we capitulated after falling 3-1 behind. I understand getting tired of over-complaining, but the offense is struggling. Of that, there can be no doubt. Someone needs to hit behind Cano. He looks frustrated as they gave him nothing to hit. I don’t know who that would be.

I pushed for chances for Romine and Adams, but boy are they struggling. The guys we have must hit. Simple as that. There are no options at the point in time.

  442. bruceb June 23rd, 2013 at 5:46 pm

Have to figure out a way to win at least 3 games this week to continue to tread water and stay in it.

That’s the best we can hope for at this point of the season with the number of injuries we have. We don’t want to be more than five games out at the ASB, but that’s going to be a tough challenge.

I thought the best we would do was split this four-game series with the Rays but we had a real chance to steal it. No matter how bad the offense was today, we created all our own problems in the seventh inning with Nova hitting two consecutive batters and Kelly then walking Longo. It left Logan no margin for error, which is never a good idea.

  443. tomingeorgia June 23rd, 2013 at 5:47 pm

    Trisha,
I’m not confident or worried over the long term, because even if I thought I knew what to do with the Minors or the 40-man, there’s nothing I CAN do about them. And while I’m gaining some respect for the “new” baseball stats, I know enough about statistics to know they present probabilities based on past performance. Not one will tell you what will happen in a particular instance. That’s why, like you, I root til the end!

    Ys Guy
I’m on here almost every day reading the various posts. I am mainly interested in the reports from the minors offered by posters who attend the games or those who have seen some of the guys play at SWB before they are called up. I rarely post whether they are winning or losing. Most of the posts are pretty obvious. Offense stinks, etc. I called out Trishia because she wants everyone to be positive about the team but that is selective positivity.

  446. TheStraw June 23rd, 2013 at 5:49 pm

  447. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 5:51 pm

bruceb, agreed, well put very realistic view of the situation, imo.

the glass is both half full and half empty. every team in the division has serious flaws as do the yankees. just keep on keepin on

maybe grandy and jeter will help, maybe the rookies start to take off. every day the yankees dont fall out of this race is one day closer to being in it at the end.

  448. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 5:57 pm

rio, she asked why someone doesnt come in when the yankees are winning and contribute something positive. thats not the same as demanding that everyone always be positive.

there are some people who just comment negatively when they lose. there are fewer who only comment when they win. it’s all good by me because im pretty sure most of both groups are actually the same people.

i was pretty certain that when atlanta’s radar gun had matt harvey hitting 100mph his last start that the gun was ‘hot’ and he was probably sticking round 98.

today he was hitting 100 again in philly……

3 baserunners in 6 innings, 6K and sitting 100. wow!

would you rather have harvey or strassburg at this point?

Being critical while still rooting for the team is OK in my book. Being relentlessly negative on the chances of a possible victory just isn’t. It ain’t over til its over, everyday. By the way, Providence, RI, is a LONG way from East Nowhere, GA.

    Yes.

  458. bruceb June 23rd, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Harvey, but then he’s yet to experience any injury problems whereas Strasburg has. Dude has everything…an amazing fastball, good secondary pitches, an even temperament – and he can even hit.

I believe he’s the first pitcher to have taken a no-hitter into the seventh inning three times in his rookie season. How can you fail to be impressed?

  459. Against All Odds June 23rd, 2013 at 6:15 pm

You can’t go wrong with Harvey or Strasburg. I know some ppl jumped off the Strasburg bandwagon due to injuries and things of that nature but the same can happen to Harvey.

Cole just needs a body of work.

  460. tucker June 23rd, 2013 at 6:16 pm

The thing that will be tough this year is there are no pushovers in the AL East. The Jays are back in the pennant race. So unlike past years, they Yanks are not going to have any freebies during the dog days of late July and August.

And, if we’re being objective, the Yanks or the Rays have the worst offense in the division.

This is going to put tremendous pressure on the pitching staff.

Positive of Negative this is a completely different Yankee team than what has been the norm. No denying that at all.

Agree 100% Tucker. Yanks and Rays have the best starting pitching and Yanks probably have the best 8th and 9th inning pitchers. But is that enough to make up for the lack of offense?

Sox, Os and Jays are way ahead in that department with three or four big boppers in each lineup.

No way Yanks can finish in first place with their current offense. So it all depends on how quickly our injured stars come back and how high a level can they perform at when they do.

    ——————————-

Over the course of a year even the worst offenses score 4 plus runs a number of times. You do realize that don’t you?

  474. bruceb June 23rd, 2013 at 6:39 pm

So do you think that the games where the offense scores 4+runs are the aberrations and just lucky?

You have to look big picture. Yanks are 26th out of the 30 teams in average. They are averaging less than four runs a game. No way can you win the AL East with that type of run production.

  475. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 6:39 pm

sanchez 2/4 with an rbi so far. congrats to sj44!

  476. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 6:44 pm

looking at the big picture includes pitching not just hitting. the yankees have the best pitching top to bottom in the division (‘key to the kingdom’)

the RS and the Orioles are hurting badly in pitching.

i think any team can win the division this year. whoever pulls it out is going to have some kind of whacky statistical anomoly (horrible pitching, huge losing streaks, horrible hitting, whatever.)

this year it’s just survive game-to-game and see where you end up.

2 out in the loss column now.

  477. Niblick June 23rd, 2013 at 6:45 pm

I guess a bad offense would have to be one that went 162 games without ever scoring more than 3 runs in a game.

  478. bruceb June 23rd, 2013 at 6:49 pm

You won’t win the AL East with a run average under four a game…no matter how good your pitching is.

justin ruggiano. hes got less career home runs than his age (28/31)

    .225 hitter.

gotta think bruce bochy didnt like that.

  483. RhapsodyInBlue June 23rd, 2013 at 6:56 pm

Difficult to stay inside on a such a gorgeous day but I watched both the Sox and Yankees having PIP on my TV like most here I’m a Yankee addict.

I agree with one of the earlier posts about our advantage over the other ALE teams in pitching depth and it is what has kept us close to date any sustained offense what-so-ever would buoy us to the front of the pack.

  484. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 6:58 pm

“You have to look big picture. Yanks are 26th out of the 30 teams in average. They are averaging less than four runs a game. No way can you win the AL East with that type of run production.”

bruce, I understand what you’re saying. But when I look to the future, every good start can mean something. It just drives me nuts when they’ve scored 6 and 7 runs back to back for whining to start because the next game they don’t get a ton of offense. You didn’t do that, by that way. There ARE going to be days when the other team’s SP will shut us down, great offense or no.

Nova had a great outing. And the Yanks just didn’t score. I’m hoping the offense picks it up for the next game and just keeps it going. But even so, in the middle of all of that, you know there will be games where they will gave shut down. Law of averages.

So I remain hopeful that the 6 and 7 runs were the start of something, and not today’s outing.

  485. bruceb June 23rd, 2013 at 7:02 pm

    ———

All of this plus they are averaging right now 3.9 runs per game.

Why look at two games over the entire season whether those two games are games that they scored 6 and 7 runs or games where they scored 0 and 1 run. Neither two game sample size means a thing.

Lucky for us we have 75 games to look at. No longer a small sample size. The offense isn’t good. Scoring 15 runs on Tuesday won’t make this offense any good. Scoring 6 or 7 runs for a couple of weeks in a row or at least a week, how about even one single series and we might be talking. Basing anything over 2 games when you are talking about a sport that plays 162 is pointless. This offense isn’t good right now. Can it be good at some point this season, maybe, let’s see what happens. But again right now this offense isn’t any good.

  499. MTU June 23rd, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    So what happens now ?

    Nova to the rotation ?

    Hughes to the Pen ?

    Phelps to the Pen ?

    Which ?

  503. MTU June 23rd, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Too bad Nova does not have good control.

With his stuff, if he did, he’d be a 20 game winner, and a frontline starter.

  504. Ys Guy June 23rd, 2013 at 7:29 pm

any baseball fan has to feel happy for morales.

  505. trisha - true pinstriped blue June 23rd, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Ys Guy – good pitching does beat good hitting. And if your pitching is right up there, you can win 1-0. Now we know that’s the exception more than the rule, but the point is that all you need is one run more than the opposition if your pitching can hold up.

And about not scoring? Yankees are averaging 3.9 runs per game. While that may not be burning up the league, it’s been enough to keep us 1 game out of first in the loss column!

And about REALLY not scoring? I’ll be right back to tell you how many times that’s happened this season.

All in the name of accurate reporting, of course.

johan for the mets prior to the shoulder surgery 40-26 (with a huge # of blown leads) sub 3.00 era, whip of about 1.17.
i guess given the relative salaries, it was slightly better to stick with the kids, but you gotta wonder what the yankees could have done in 2010 and 2011 with a shut-down lefty #2.
can’t ignore what phil did for the yankees in the pen in 2009, though.

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

If we come down to the basics, silk is a natural protein fiber, produced by the larvae of certain specific insects, like caterpillars of moth. It is composed mainly of fibroin. Other insects also produce silk, but the aforementioned type has been used for textile manufacturing. Moreover, researchers have determined that out of the many species of silk moths, 70 are of certain economic value. Again out of these 70, there are only 4 natural silk varieties that have a commercial value Mulberry silk, Tasar silk, Muga silk, and Eri silk. The best type of silk comes from the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori, which is obtained by domestication. The other silkworm species produce silk that is known as “wild silk”, since the silkworms are grown in the remote forests in natural weather conditions.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I intended to put you this tiny note to help thank you so much the moment again with the amazing suggestions you’ve discussed here. It’s really shockingly open-handed of people like you to convey without restraint what exactly most people would have sold for an e book to make some profit for their own end, notably given that you could have done it in the event you decided. Those ideas as well acted as the easy way to fully grasp other individuals have similar interest just like my own to know the truth much more when it comes to this condition. I think there are numerous more pleasurable occasions ahead for folks who look over your blog.

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification appeared to be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people think about worries that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

Kate Spade Kate Spade has THE NICEST changing pads of all. They are large and cushy and wipe off really, really well. have at so many diaper and there is really no comparison. bag is shallow and wide deep), so I can really see everything I’m looking for. Good pockets inside, too, and easy to wipe out inside. There are two external bottle holder pockets are perfect for stashing bottles, though they are not insulated. If I think I’m going to be out a while I use a bottle holder to keep it cool longer, but most of the time I just shove a bottle in one external pocket, and (if I don’t bring pumped milk), a can of formula in the other. It can be drycleaned but, because the leather on it is real, and the gold is real, it does have to be sent out from our local dry cleaner to a specialist, so it costs a bit more much) and takes a few extra days. Kate Spade bags generally also come with stroller clips, and I use mine every day. The bag also has “feet” on the bottom. I think it looks pretty purse ish as well. The stroller straps are included (not sold separately). I have 2 Kate Spade bags. The second one is huge and I use it for overnight trips with the baby, so I always have an extra (very nice) changing pad back at the hotel, and all of Baby’s stuff in one bag. love both bags. Definitely stylish, and definitely looks like a purse, so it is nice to carry. I also love that it has two zippered pockets (one on each end) that are fully insulated for bottles, so that makes them easy to get to and easy to keep cool. The changing pad is not as nice as the Kate Spade (it is comparable to Skip Hop or Cole Haan). I’m also a tad disappointed with the quality. It is not real leather, and for the price, it should be. Also, I have the metallic pewter Emily bag, and after only a month or two, some of the metallic scraped off. If you want stroller clips, you have to buy them separately, but I find that the strap is long enough to put the bag over the handlebar if you have a single handlebar stroller, as I do, so I don’t need them (and don’t have them). I also wish the bag had “feet” so it didn’t have to sit directly on the bathroom floor. silk has to be drycleaned with a special process, which is fine (takes some extra time at the dry cleaner), but not all drycleaners will do it. Mine does, though. primary complaint is that the pad does not simply wipe off if your baby gets poop on it, you have to hand wash it (though I put it in the washer on gentle and it came out fine) and AIR dry it. wasn’t a huge deal in the summer when I was using it, but come on! It’s a changing pad! Also, the changing pad velcroes in and out, which sounds like a great idea until it sticks to your baby’s hair or clothes, or gets stuck to your nice pants or sweater when you’re trying to fumble it on or off and causes fuzzy spots on your good clothes. I used it in the past 2 summers (and probably will this summer too) it was more of a summery look than my others and had backpack straps for the beach. But I would not have it as my MAIN diaper bag, and I would not pay full price. you can get a deal, it makes a fun second bag. (Petunia Picklebottom outlet online does a sale of seconds and discontinued items fairly often. I also like that it has backpack straps, though I have only ever used them when we’re on the beach, going to a concert, etc. I keep my diaper bag on the stroller handle most days. Recently, PPB introduced a version that is wipeable (not silk), so that might be more practical. Look for “PVC Free Glazed Wipeable Exterior.” (Not sure what the interior is like, or whether it has the same problem with the changing pad as the silk version.) The stroller clips for PPB come separately, for about $18. I sometimes use the strap by itself (which is long enough), but it tends to work its way undone sometimes, so the stroller clips are a good investment and I do use them. The bag does not have feet. Very roomy, looks like a purse, wipes off easily, and is a good size for two babies (maybe a tad big for 1). I don’t feel like it is as luxurious as the Kate Spade, and was surprised that the skimpy changing pad was not nearly as nice (again, comparable to Skip Hop Storksak). There are open air bottle pockets, similar to the Kate Spade, but they are insulated. And there are feet on the bottom, which is nice. I would buy the duo again. First, it barely fits enough for 1 baby. Second, I think the changing pad is skimpy, and third, it is small but DEEP, so you can’t find things as easily. The Studio, on the other hand, amazing in terms of pockets, and definitely looks like a purse. the price, it is more diaper bag for the money than the brands listed above, and has a nice anti microbial pocket for wet clothes, etc. It has a ton of pockets, and would definitely be big enough for 2 babies. On the minus side, I again think the changing pads are skimpy and paying close to $100 for a bag with leather accents still bothers me. (Couldn’t they throw in real leather strap at that price?) It seems very functional and otherwise great quality, though. The Studio has feet on the bottom, which is great. It came, and it’s pretty, and I gave it to her, but I wasn’t that impressed. The inside is really small (smaller than every bag listed above), which I found surprising. pockets are so small and tight inside that they kind of worthless, and it doesn’t seem like it would fit all the things I like to throw in it for a newborn. The changing pad is not that great, either. I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for it.
