Adams’ struggles continue

With Reid Brignac’s departure, Joe Girardi is going with Jayson Nix as the primary shortstop and rookie David Adams as the primary third baseman for now. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez presumably will return sometime after the All-Star break.
It would help if Adams chipped in with some hits like he did in Triple-A and right after he arrived last month. After getting off to a .316 start with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he got off to a .323 start in his first eight games with the Yankees.
But he has tailed off markedly since then. This month, he’s just 4 for 35. His average is down to .191. I spoke to Adams before Sunday’s 3-1 loss in the series finale against the Rays. He has an idea what the problem has been.
“I think it’s just trying to put pressure on myself, honestly, just trying to do too much, just getting away from my strengths and what I’m good at,” Adams said. “So I think it’s just simplifying things and getting back to just trusting my plan.”
Then he finished hitless in four at-bats, striking out twice along the way, including a three-pitch K against Fernando Rodney to end the game.
“We’re going to keep running him out there,” Girardi said afterward. “… Hopefully the regular playing time will get him going.”
I’ll have a full feature story on Adams’ up-and-down time in the organization Tuesday at Lohud.com/sports and in The Journal News.
Please check back here at noon today. Chad is going to have a live chat.
