7. J.J. Hardy SS

8. Ryan Flaherty 2B

9. Brian Roberts DH

Miguel Gonzalez RHP

Umpires: Gary Darling HP, Jerry Meals 1B, Gerry Davis 2B, Chris Conroy 3B

Weather: Hot, humid, mostly clear

TV/radio: YES/WCBS 880

A-Rod update: A-Rod’s rehab game stats today with Single-A Tampa at Lakeland? There were none. Rainout.

Ichiro’s contribution: Suzuki has batted .346 with three homers, 10 RBI and seven steals over his last 21 games, which include eight multihit games.

Update, 7:13: Nova gives up one single but fans two in the first.

Update, 7:26: The Yankees wasted a leadoff double by Gardner. Be interesting to see how they do against a good pitcher as opposed to the Twins’ staff.

Update, 7:32: Nova serves up two-run HR to Wieters after hitting Davis with a curve.

Update, 7:45: The Yankees manage to work out one walk and that’s it in the second.

Update, 7:50: Luis Cruz looks impressive defensively, two nice plays in a 1-2-3 third.

Update, 7:56: Ichiro flies to the wall in right-center to cap another 1-2-3 third.

Update, 8:01: Nova gets another three-up, three-down inning with a little help from Cano.

Update, 8:16: Luis Cruz has a chance to get designated when Eduardo Nunez is ready, but in this game he looks like he belongs here, good on defense and an RBI single to cut it to 2-1 after four.

Update, 8:24: Nova strikes out the side in the fifth, looking good.

Update, 8:39: Bases loaded, one out, and Hafner flies to shallow center and Wells fouls out. Yankees get nothing.

Update, 8:47: Nova has his good curve again. He allows a leadoff single in the sixth, then gets a double-play ball and freezes Markakis with a curve.

Update, 8:55: End of six, Orioles two runs, three hits off Nova; Yankees one run, four hits off Gonzalez.

Update, 9:04: Two more Ks and a walk in the seventh against Nova, really has pitched a great game.

Update, 9:07: Troy Patton replaces Gonzalez for the seventh.

Update, 9:16: Cano reaches on a two-out error, and that’s it. Still only four Yankees hits through seven, two singles, two doubles.

Update, 9:22: Nova has another 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. Now has 10 Ks.

Update, 9:23: Darren O’Day on for Baltimore.

Update, 9:33: Overbay single and that’s it. Nova out for the ninth. Romine catching.

Update, 9:40: Nova goes the full nine, two runs, three hits, 11 Ks. Jim Johnson, not always so reliable, on to try to close it out.

Update, 9:47: Bases loaded, one out for Hafner.

Update, 9:50: Johnson walks in the tying run on four pitches.

Update, 9:53: Wells RBI single, Yankees win 3-2.

    luis-way to spin it!

  12. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

    Sinker is lively.

  13. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Nice… Good slider, taking advantage of Jones lack of patience

  14. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Ivan will reach for his inner Nova tonight and bring this streak to 5.

  15. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

luis-YF needs an appointment to your Cabinet.
    What position would she deserve?

  16. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

    Atta boy, Gardy.

  17. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

    ’4th’ leads the way again!

  18. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 5th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

    Girardi pushes the right buttons.

    :)

  19. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

    I smell a Sweep!
    Where are your leftys, Buck?

  20. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

And after a great defensive play… A very good piece of hitting from our own 4th OFer!!

  21. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Please no bunting!! Buck isn’t stupid he won’t pitch to Cano.

  22. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:18 pm

    Ichiro is a bunting fool.

  25. Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Zoilo’s so tired he’s only had 6 hits in his last 4 games.

  26. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

    Stay within yourself, Robi.

  28. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

I really don’t understand Ichiro trying to bunt. He has been doing that a lot recently with guys on base. He has been one of their best hitters recently. Now he just wasted that at bat with a runner in scoring position. Girardi has to tell him to stop.

  34. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    Damn!! Good approach…

  35. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    Robi’s on the right track.

  36. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Ichiro thinks he can beat out every bunt he puts down.

  37. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Haf go with the pitch dude

  38. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

fantasy baseball doesnt directly relate to real baseball but it is still indicitive of statistical achievement.

brett gardner is the 25th ranked outfielder in all of baseball in fantasy baseball.

that puts him ahead of, what, 5 ‘first’ outfielders and 30 ’2nd’ outfielders

and defense counts for nothing, zilch, in fantasy baseball

    that’s one helluva ’4th outfielder’!

  39. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    Haf time

  40. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    primo, yep.

  41. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Was thinking Sec. of Defense YF…

  42. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

    Work it back.

  43. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

    Haf goes to left plenty.

  44. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

He is coming back with the splitty Haf… stay away from it

  45. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

    Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Zoilo’s so tired he’s only had 6 hits in his last 4 games.

Be one thing if it were like mid August or something.

  46. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    Dang!

  47. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    Regardless, nice at bat

  48. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

wells is so tired he has only 4 hits in his last 7 at-bats.

  49. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

    RISP fail :(

  50. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Well…. A good lead off double goes to waste… Still, Two very good at bats from Cano and Hafner

  51. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 5th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

“wells is so tired he has only 4 hits in his last 7 at-bats.”

He’s through I tell you. Through!

    :)

  52. Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Is there another team in baseball that would have a guy with a .580 OPS against eighties batting 5th?

  53. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Yes our AB’s have definitely improved; maybe Matsui being in town has inspired us to work the count. Cool that he is throwing BP in SI tomorrow.

  54. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Bring up Nunie and bring Derek and Alex to play the left side IF in Trenton.

  55. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    almonte would have had that.

  56. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    Ugh

  57. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

i said they should walk davis and challenge wiethers and i lost. but i’d still do it again all night.

  58. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    F*&k

  59. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Damn…Nova just can’t continue to stay down in the zone.

  60. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

    Wieters is strong

  61. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

The problem is that Nova’s off speed offerings are not working well tonight… His sinker though is very good… That was a very good at bat from Wieters

  62. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

    Throwing too many 4 seamers

  63. jlyanks85 July 5th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Matt Wieters is awful this year. It’s time to get some payback for last week. Can’t let these overrated birds beat us in our ballpark.

  64. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

But this O’s batters are very good…. That was a good pitch that Roberts actually managed to hit with authority

  65. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

weither is hitting like .220 on the year and worse against the yankees coming in. it’s the right call. sometimes you make the right call and still get burend. that’s wiether’s first hit in july.

  66. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Agree, Luis. He muscled that oppo.

  67. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

    Luis, very good hitters

  68. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

    any news on carlos ruiz?

  69. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 5th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Out for a while. Keep the home fires burning mickster.

  70. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

    enjoy the whopper trish.

  71. Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

    Nice AB Vern.

  72. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:40 pm

No offense to Wells intended…. But what the hell is he doing in the lineup against a RHP?

  73. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 5th, 2013 at 7:40 pm

    No whopper mick. Work out.

    :)

  74. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 7:40 pm

tampa’s rained out. nunez singled and scored for trenton in his first AB.

  75. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:40 pm

    ok work off the whoppers.

  76. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Sometimes Wells gets lucky and he gets a hit but most of the time he is completely over matched. He should only play against lefties.

  77. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

    That was ball 4 Lyle

  78. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

    No offense to Wells intended….
    =========
just a day off luis, refer to last thread

  79. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Thanks Mick… Still, why not wait until we face a LHP?

  80. Ace July 5th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Lineup terrible. Nova awful as usual.

  81. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

balt isn’t throwing any luis but we could see one tonight from the pen.
    then likely we see zoilo

  82. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

I hate Manny Machado…. So much, that i wish we had him on our team

  83. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

    Nice catch

  84. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

They have to figure out Gonzalez. I am really tired of him dominating them every time they face him.

  85. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

    Machado is a manchild.

  86. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

why would we call pineda up from the minors anytime before the ASB?

  87. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

Isn’t a little early to say that Nova is terrible?

  88. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:47 pm

luis if we took a poll here he would not be considered terrible

  89. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

    Yes, its too early.

  90. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

    Nice

  91. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

    nasty drop

  92. Hassey July 5th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Anyone else getting the feeling that this losing streak vs. the O’s may last a while longer?

  93. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Nice pitch right under the hands to Manny

  94. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

    Atta boy Cruz

  95. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

and he induces a grounder, that’s the ticket, Vato.

  96. SoS July 5th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

Trivia no idea what the answer to it is.
When was the last time the yankees had 6 consecutuve players or any in the lineup not hitting over .250 at one time?

  97. Hassey July 5th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

Sick of hearing about machado’s doubles

Find something else to talk about

  98. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

Nice play by Cruz there…. Nasty slider for the k on previous hitter.

    Mick,

    Yup… I agree

  99. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

    Are they cruising yet?

  100. jmills July 5th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Who are the last 4 staters to win 20 or more ( name them each and every one to win the tadpole prize ) avec one team, same season?

  101. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

    SoS,

Not sure… But I would bet around 1993

  102. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

    Nice inning by Vato.

  103. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

this cruz is a wizard….any ideas on jeter as DH for awhile?

  104. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

The Orioles in 1971 if I am not mistaken

  106. NYY fan in NH July 5th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

I hate Baltimore with a passion… climbing in the range of the Sux

  107. Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Not terrible. As Joe will undoubtedly say after the game, he threw the ball well and just missed with one pitch. Unfortunately sometimes all it takes is one, especially with this offense.

  108. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Palmer Flanagan Cuellar mcNally or sumpin like that…baby birds

  109. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

They lost the WS by the way

  110. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:54 pm

  112. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:55 pm

I like Singleton but when he does the O’s series he really annoys me. It’s like a 3 hour love fest and non stop about each player and and why they are good. Enough of that crap already.

  113. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Why you swinging at that Brett

  114. luis July 5th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

69?? I was too young to remember

  115. jmills July 5th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Trish, ” Work Out”, is a song off Red Rider’s, ” Neruda ” album, arguably the best Canuck rock record ever made ( Sorry, Rush and, ” Moving Pictures “, step slightly, aside ).

  116. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

They have no luck against this smoke and mirrors team

  117. mick July 5th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

damn i had dobson and crossed him out for flanagan

  118. Hassey July 5th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Fan should have leaned over and broke that up

That one deep shot is like a rally for us, against this Gonzo guy

  119. bruceb July 5th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Orioles have a scary lineup; so much power. Won’t be at all surprised if they sweep us again.

  120. SoS July 5th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

    Luis,
I know our 80s and early 90s. But I can’t imagine any of thosr teams had a string of 6 batting less than a quarter.

  121. chicken_stanley July 5th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Wasn’t Dobson one of the 20 gamers for balt?

  122. jmills July 5th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

We have to honour, Pat Dobson, R.I.P.!

  123. Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

    Not Flanagan. Wrong era.

  124. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

Orioles have a scary lineup; so much power.
    ————-

Exactly, that’s why Ichiro playing for one run in the 1st inning made no sense

  125. luis July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

    Nice Robbie

  126. mick July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

    Ova to Nova!

  127. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

    2 nice plays by Cano

  128. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

smh how effortlessly he throws across his body he’s like butter.

  129. Bucky July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

Wow! Great D these last couple of innings.

  130. luis July 5th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

    Cano!!!!!

  131. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

    Another great play by Robi.

  132. luis July 5th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

And a great cover by Nova

  133. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Nice play hope Nova didn’t tweak anything

  134. igotid88 July 5th, 2013 at 8:02 pm

    A lot of defensive help

  135. Niblick July 5th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Not bad for a lazy second baseman who should be traded ASAP.

  136. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Yes, Nova very nimble over there :D

  137. Pat M. July 5th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Instead of runner on the corners and no outs, it’s a 1-2-3 inning…..Who says defense is over rated ???

  138. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Niblick, they are losers. He’s a marvel.

  139. luis July 5th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

    Luis,
I know our 80s and early 90s. But I can’t imagine any of thosr teams had a string of 6 batting less than a quarter.

I agree… But I am concerned with the length of his upcoming deal… Also, by the time the team is competitive again, he will be in his declining years… Another thing is that it might better to get something in return instead of a comp draft pick… But yeah, i don’t want Cashman to be running that show.

    JAP and YF,

If they were going to put a limit on spending… They should have dumped the no extension policy… extending Cano made all the sense in the world… You save some money and at the same time you give Cano security… More importantly, You stay flexible when his decline starts ( 35 years ) and pay him accordingly, not for past performances, since you already paid him top dollar for his prime.

  192. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 8:27 pm

I am a little concerned with his LHP splits… Granted, he is ALONE on that lineup and that is playing a part as he has said… But if we are on a budget, paying him 20 mil plus after his year 35 season would be moronic IMO… They should have extended him until his age 35 season at top dollar, and work new more inexpensive contracts after that… I don’t know how they keep him and go below the 189 mil cap at the same time with Ichiro and Wells on the books

  251. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 8:55 pm

primo, regarding Robi vs. LHP, I posted this from last week or so:

I really think it’s just the decline in the overall lineup that is causing Robi to develop bad habits.

His BABIP against LHP this year is .253, (.272 last year and .331 in 2011, the last year he hit LHP) and, for instance, his LD% is 13.3 percent this year.

Might have been somewhat unlucky last year against LHP (28.4 LD%), but his decent OBP in 2012 came against RHP, and this year, his OBP under .300 vs. lefties. In 2011, he had a higher OBP against LHP than RHP.

Any way, I would hope those percentages will undergo some correction, since they’re all so low. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that last year, too, at a certain point, teams just kind of stopped pitching to him. This year, the lineup around him is a complete disaster.

It’s absurd for anyone to predict how long a player will continue to be productive. The reality is that stars are compensated as much for their past performance as their future performance. You either recognize that reality or let the player go. This one is as close to a no-brainer as any.

primo, regarding Robi vs.

    ================================

I agree… There is no reason to give him anything to hit with this lineup

  261. comet July 5th, 2013 at 9:02 pm

I’m not expecting this team to hit like the Red Sox at Fenway but it would be nice if someone told them they are playing at home. Nova pitches like Cy Young and we’re 2-1 down in the seventh. Seriously?

  273. Nick in SF July 5th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Pat M, I’m probably going to be out of the city tomorrow night, so plans to go to the game, but I’ll let you know if my plans change.

  274. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

luis, I do think those whopping LD rates from last year indicate a lack of luck and the OBP is a product of not staying within himself against lefties and resorting to chasing. If you plunked him down in top or middle third of Detroit’s lineup, just have a hunch the issues vs. lefties would be resolved.

Cano though is an outlier type 2B. Knock on wood he never gets hurt, is the smoothest customer, doesn’t require much muscular tension, has a springy arm, makes that flip throw, glides to the ball, doesn’t need to dive often, and seems to be wired naturally loose. He may lose lateral range, but his bat would play easily at 1B or 3B. The swing, too, is just sweet and easy…I think he’ll age like fine wine

  373. DONNYBROOK July 5th, 2013 at 9:41 pm

On that 2 run dinger, Wells continued drifting back to the wall. He shoulda got to the wall ASAP and jumped straight up. He does that and he snags the ball off the top of the wall.

  374. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 9:41 pm

wait, wasnt nova ‘horrible’ earlier tonight?

    or was it ‘inexcusable?’

    horrendous?

    i can’t remember….

  375. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Great job by Nova. Offense please wake up!!!

  376. Pat M. July 5th, 2013 at 9:42 pm

Pruf…..What would offer and what would you sign him for ???? 4 /25 is my call, with an option ( players )

  377. Shame Spencer July 5th, 2013 at 9:42 pm

…And if we don’t wake up the kid is going to get a loss.

Just picture all of the O’s wearing Twins uniforms guys!! Please!

(Do you think we could have a hypnotist come to the clubhouse and convince them they’re always playing the Twins?)

Who pinch-hits for Adams in the 9th? CC?

    ——

It’s sad, but that might actually be an upgrade.

  379. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 9:42 pm

“Vatissimo” Bellisimo! Now go get him a win!

  380. igotid88 July 5th, 2013 at 9:42 pm

Yup. They can’t take him out of the rotation now.

  383. cofuzz July 5th, 2013 at 9:43 pm

Time for Adams to have his True Yankee moment?

  384. Yankee Trader July 5th, 2013 at 9:43 pm

    Need Ibanez right about now

  385. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 9:43 pm

Gardner on 2nd and no one out and bases loaded and they can’t do a thing.

    That was a killer

  386. luis July 5th, 2013 at 9:44 pm

    Pat M,

No way he signs for 4/25…. He will ask for 7/25 … But I wouldbe happy if he gets 5/25 and an option

    Luis,

2012 Tex’s ops was ove .80, combined in 2013 Hafner/Wells combined is under .700. To say it’s the same situation is just not accurate.

  396. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

    He blows it! Yes!!

  397. Rich in NJ July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Whoa. Sterling going nuts about how this proves why they should bunt more.

  398. Locke July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

YES! BETTER TO BE LUCKY THEN GOOD.

  399. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Pat M, but you’ll never re-sign him for that. 7 years is probably more realistic

    He blows it!!!

  400. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

just another lucky play by ’4th’ the no talent bum….

  401. luis July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Good job Adams!! Actually he has had a couple of good at bats ( the walk and he hit a bullet toward CF as well ) and now the all important 9th inning hit.

    YES!!!

  402. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Nice hit by Adams. Ichiro has to swing away here otherwise they will walk Cano. Can’t leave it up to Hafner and Wells.

  403. Shame Spencer July 5th, 2013 at 9:46 pm

Bad bunt.. bad play.. I’ll take it!

    Hafner SUCKS

  409. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

mama mia, what a game pitched by Nova. Funny how things that appear bad at one moment eventually end up turning out so good. Not the first time.

  410. Jerkface July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Wow Machado’s charging is the only thing that saved the Yankees from Wieters making an excellent play. Thanks!

  411. igotid88 July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

    Come on Hafner

  412. Captain Clutch July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

What in the world is Ichiro doing bunting??? He almost hit a homerun and has a double today. That made absolutely no sense.

  413. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

    Crap! I hate this move!

  414. NYY_Girl_Penny July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

  415. cofuzz July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

  416. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Not comparing OPS’s… But they were pitching around Cano last season consistently… This season has become a no brainer… Read my posts from last season and you will see I am not revising anything

  422. Pat M. July 5th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

Yanks have to cash in this opportunity , right…Hafner will hit the ball hard somewhere

  423. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

Yeah, I don’t like giving away the out…

  424. jacksquat July 5th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

  525. LGY July 5th, 2013 at 10:01 pm

That was a great win and a huge hit by Wells but let’s be real.

Wells does in fact suck. One hit in a 162 game season doesn’t tell you much of anything about a player.

  526. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 10:01 pm

its funny how people GLOAT about what a putrid idiot ‘binder joe’ is in the third inning

but when he makes all the moves to win a big division game, at the end, the people who had faith in our excellent manager despite people’s bs whining about him should never GLOAT.

yeah, im gloating because i had to put up with about 6 hours of all you geniuses slamming our excellent manager.

    too f’in bad.

  527. blake July 5th, 2013 at 10:01 pm

    Just watched the game.

Nova was fantastic….95 mph and he’s finally sinking the ball again. He was terrific and gave them a chance for Jim Johnson to be terrible and they won the game. Pretty cool…. Happy for Vern

  531. luis July 5th, 2013 at 10:02 pm

This is the best game of the season, period.

Nova showed why we should stick with him and show patience… He is a potential ace… No other young pitcher on the roster or Triple A has his upside.

Gritty win coming back on the 9th… Nova deserved that W after his best performance ever…. Adams played very well on both ends of the ball, and made the comeback possible with that hit…. Cano very good on defense and circumstances basically took the bat from him… Otherwise, I think this game would have been decided much earlier… Wells played very well, aside from the Wieters homer… He scored a gutsy run

All in all a game to remember

They wax on about improvement and good swings and all that crap when a guy’s in his 30s.

But a kid with his future in front of him, they’re happy to pull the plug on and stall his development, even as we’re positively starved for youth with offensive upside. Almonte’s done everything that could be asked of him, including playing decent defense in LF. If he doesn’t have a head cold or some little nagging thing, to the devil with these people.

When you take one at bat to comment on the overall quality of the player, you’re are actually opening up that player to criticism. Especially when it’s so obvious how bad that player has been for several years now.

You would think the “positive posters” would just want to celebrate the big hit and big win. But no.

  562. Locke July 5th, 2013 at 10:11 pm

If we send Adams down when ARod returns how long do we have to wait before we could recall him? Is it 10 days?

  563. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Ys Guy, I don’t take cheap shots; I express my opinion, and I do it civilly, probably more civilly than many here. It is kind of strange that instead of talking about the win or even debating an opinion because you want to have an earnest dialogue that you attack other posters. Why not make your point in a debate rather than attack people personally. I will say this, I have stopped responding to the people who troll just for the sake of it. And I am not going to be polite to people who aren’t polite back. Now can we enjoy this win and talk baseball. Thanks.

They could go with a Adams, Nunez, Wells, Romine bench when both Arod and Jeter are back. Arod, Jeter can get DH days vs LHP. Wells can spell the OF vs LHP. That effectively makes Adams/Nunez your DH vs LHP though.

The problem is who goes when Granderson gets back? Hopefully Almonte makes that a very hard decision.

is looking up stats in a binder kinda like reading a book to educate yourself?

i mean, is information a bad thing? is knowing what the stats ‘say’ before you make a decision a bad thing?

the stats say that almonte has a better ba, obp and ops than wells.

so wells should never start according to some stats in a ‘binder’ right?

so how does joe girardi get the moniker ‘binder joe’?

because he wants information before he makes a decision?

    this ISN’T a good thing?

  655. jmv July 5th, 2013 at 10:48 pm

  656. cofuzz July 5th, 2013 at 10:49 pm

League wide, Bill James say about 55% of runners score from third when the team has less than two outs.
That’s with great and not-so-great batters all factored in and I think those are better chances than Robinson Cano has of getting a base hit in any situation. He gets hits (which he would’ve need to score someone from second) about 29-30% of the time this season.
So that’s why you let Ichiro bunt in the 9th inning with nobody out.
Also, Showalter can still intentionally walk Cano if he believes the 2B is the only batter who can hurt him.

  657. mick July 5th, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Of the players you mention… I wouldn’t part with Phelps, Nova and Claiborne… Joba is as good as gone after this season, same with Hughes I think, so maybe there is a package there along with Granderson to get a good young bat in return?… This team sorely needs one… But I wouldn’t trade any player that could fill a role in the future.

  696. G. Love July 5th, 2013 at 11:13 pm

When CC lost the no hitter and we then lost the game to the O’s I called it the worst loss of the season.

Tonight…was the best win of the season.

They still need more bats, but we saw a #1 starter quality performance tonight and we saw the team find a way in the 9th to defend their ace.

I don’t know if this means we’re gonna start rolling – I still think we’re too thin offensively by 2-3 bats.

But seeing Nova dominate them and seeing Adams get the inning started was pretty great.

Nova had the stadium in his pocket late tonight – I hope he can harness that he has the ability to have that every night. His pitches, when he’s on, are top of the rotation. The worst thing to see is a guy with this kind of ability just not find it. I hope he’s found it. He can be electrifying if he harnesses his talent.

  704. luis July 5th, 2013 at 11:16 pm

    Locke July 5th, 2013 at 11:10 pm
Luis – I really don’t know of who we could target. The Twins aren’t going anywhere, do you think there is a chance they would trade Joe Mauer? He could play 3 games at C and 2 games at 1B each week.

    =================================

His contract is too big I think…. They wouldn’t have space in the payroll for Cano in this case… But I would love to have him… A more likely target would be Morneau… But I would look for someone younger that could fill a need in the future… But for instant gratification, he could be a nice target.

  705. Locke July 5th, 2013 at 11:16 pm

Mauer is hitting LHP well this season (.359 .407 .526 .933) and YS could really help his power numbers. It would mean that we are blowing the 189mm limit.

  706. mick July 5th, 2013 at 11:17 pm

  711. luis July 5th, 2013 at 11:21 pm

Luis – One thing to think about is that we will probably give qualifying offers to Hughes and Granderson. Trading either of them would effectively cost us a shot at keeping them for another year or a draft pick.

    ==================================

A good and more advanced prospect might be better return than a draft pick… Also, the QO would be around 14 mil, that’s a lot of dough… Given Granderson’s season so far, he might accept it and play for one more year to increase his worth long term… In the case of Hughes, he is getting a multiyear contract elsewhere.

Maybe you’re being sarcastic, but he could be the final piece to the puzzle for them. They have two great OFs in Marte and McCutchen. I think I heard that they are last in production in RF of any team. If they are really going to make a push for a playoff run why not trade a lot to get that last piece? I’m sure Granderson would be able to play a good RF.

    “Seriously? Why?”

Not my area of knowledge. RAB:

2013 Draft: Yankees agree to sign 20th round pick Drew Bridges
    By Mike Axisa
Via Jim Callis: The Yankees have agreed to sign 20th round pick Drew Bridges to an over-slot bonus. The exact amount is unknown, but Callis says it is sixth round money. That would put it in the $175-300k range. As a 20th rounder, anything he gets in excess of $100k counts against the team’s draft pool.

Bridges, 18, is a third baseman out of a Missouri high school. In their pre-draft scouting report, Baseball America (subs. req’d) said he “earns Brett Wallace comparisons because he’s a big-bodied left-handed hitter who can produce for average and might have interesting power if he adds loft to his swing.” Bridges is a big kid at 6-foot-4 and 220 lbs., so his ability to remain at third long-term is a question.

  721. Locke July 5th, 2013 at 11:25 pm

Luis – I’d take Granderson and Hughes for 14 on single year deals. It would be expensive for Hughes, but I’d bet he would decline. Granderson might accept and I’d be fine with that.

  722. Shame Spencer July 5th, 2013 at 11:25 pm

  736. G. Love July 5th, 2013 at 11:30 pm

    Yanksfem,

This was the game of the season so far, for me. The place wasn’t sold out, but I think the combination of the heat/holiday weekend had fans less antsy and more into this particular matchup.

Fans caught onto what Nova was doing and what we were seeing tonight.

It just felt like he was K’ing everyone.

I actually think the fans cheering/urging Nova to the CG in the 9th when he would be leaving with the loss made the offense wake up.

It was a bizarre turn where the house was applauding Nova’s dominance even though it looked like it was vain because of the score. You have to think about that for a second, because stadium crowds don’t normally (or recently) applaud losing efforts (or what appeared to be one) too often like they did tonight.

Seeing Nova be that guy tonight was special since I always thought this is who he would eventually be.

That said, I’m not going to get too high. He could revert to his bad self. I hate that he needs to be sent down as motivation to be this guy again.

But if his coaches are worth any salt, they’re going to make sure he knows he can be the guy here if he quiets down the noise in his head and just gets it done.

I just remember in the 9th saying “please, inside/out the ball Adams and go to RF” and he when he did, I knew we had the game won with Gardner, Ichiro, Cano coming up.

When it got down to Hafner/Wells I was honestly expecting a DP but Hafner atoned for the earlier offense in the game.

We still need bats though – how crazy is it to have this kind of pitching depth and no offense. I hope the Yankees can somehow fix the O. If they do, we’ll catch the Red Sox and whoever else is in front of us.

  737. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 11:30 pm

Ys Guy, I’ll try one more time. You seemed to be suggesting that someone — randy? — had trashed Cashman for years and then changed his screen name to get away from it after the 2009 postseason. Is that what you were really saying? Were you talking about someone else? What was your point?

  754. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 11:36 pm

GLove, thanks for the details. Much appreciated. I could feel the crowd was into it even from home. And well they should have been. This is the kind of start I have been dreaming of for Nova and the reason I wanted to keep him vs. trade him. He still needs stay consistent but his stuff is just so nasty (best of the young’uns and I always bet and hope for stuff and that the command will be there.) I agree about the bats. Let’s see what getting Jeet, Alex and Grandy back gives us, but I’d love for them to keep Zoilo around as well. As for Adams, like I have been saying that oppo Adams who doesn’t try to do too much is the player from Trenton that I expect to see. Let’s keep the good vibe going.

I agree on trading Hughes… He is gone anyway… Nova will make you proud, but we need patience to stay the course… He is an ace if his mechanics become consistent… He has progressed in every outing… His tempo is consistent, his release point is where it is supposed to be, that’s why he had so much movement and sink on the FB … Add to this his killer CB and slider plus the avg to good CU and he could be a monster that could win 20 games

  765. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 11:45 pm

    GLove,

That sink is back and plays up the offspeed and even his 4 seamer. That’s what had gone missing. If he can keep that up, he’ll be dominant. Yeah it’s great that he has Andy to chirp in his ear.

  766. G. Love July 5th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

    J.AP,

Agreed. He’s a strikeout pitcher who also possesses a ground-ball out pitch in that sinker when he’s on.

That’s a 20 game winner in this league when the pitcher harnesses that ability.

He’s what Wang wasn’t when it comes to having the out pitch to ring up K’s outside of the sinker and Wang won tons of games here.

I think it’s all mental with him and I hope he can embrace his role here going forward.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
