Yankees postgame: Nova deserves old job back

Ivan NovaThere’s no room at the moment for Ivan Nova, and yet doesn’t it seem like it’s time to make room again in the rotation? He has been excellent since he has been back from the minors, especially in this 3-2 win over the Orioles, his first career complete game. And it came with just three hits and one walk allowed, plus 11 strikeouts.

Nova would seem to have more of an upside than David Phelps, especially if the 26-year-old righty has indeed found his old consistency that abandoned him a year ago.

The Yankees could give him a start again with just nine games to go until the All-Star break. Eventually, though, they may have to make a decision. Plus, they have such a short bench with 13 pitchers here.

Joe Girardi said: “I’m not sure exactly how we’ll do it, but he’ll probably start again.”

Nova said he had everything working, including that mid-90s fastball, some changeups and again that great curveball.

“His curveball was about as good as I’ve seen a curveball from anyone,” Vernon Wells said.

Nova was told along the way by a couple of teammates that the Yankees were going to win this game, and he believed it, too.

“I never thought we were going to lose,” Nova said. “I was positive the whole night.”

It took Baltimore’s shaky closer to help shake out a couple of runs in the ninth. Jim Johnson blew his sixth save in 35 chances and dropped to 2-7. His ERA rose to 4.02. One of the two runs in the ninth was unearned thanks to Johnson’s error on Brett Gardner’s bunt. But David Adams helped as well, opening the ninth with a single. And Wells helped with his ground single to left to touch off the celebration.

The Yankees not only won their season-high-tying fifth straight despite struggling offensively again, but they snapped their five-game losing streak against the Orioles, improving to 4-6 against them.

“That team over there has had our number,” Wells said. “They’ve played well against us even in the games that we’ve won. … We were just able to come through late (tonight). But we need to win games like that. We haven’t done it enough. We were doing it early in the season. Hopefully we can get back to doing that.”

Hiroki Kuroda felt good after his bullpen session and will be slotted back into the rotation if his hip flexor feels the same Saturday.

Eduardo Nunez went 3 for 3 with a walk and an RBI in his rehab game with Trenton against Reading. Besides Derek Jeter and Michael Pineda being scheduled for rehab work Saturday night with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre against visiting Lehigh Valley, Alex Rodriguez is scheduled for a rehab game Saturday night with Single-A Tampa against the Brevard County Manatees at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla.

If you pitch like that, there is room.

  2. jmv July 5th, 2013 at 11:44 pm

Vato is a way to call a partner in northern Mexico.

Or a way to call a tough pitcher in LoHud!

  3. Nick in SF July 5th, 2013 at 11:45 pm

Can he keep pitching like that all the times he isn’t getting dissed, sent down, etc.?

‘Cos then he wouldn’t get dissed or sent down anymore.

  4. jackamir July 5th, 2013 at 11:45 pm

We will make room. Maybe put Phelps in the BP and send somebody down and prepare for a trade to bring a bat on board.

  5. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 11:46 pm

i came here in 08 and randy was tin cup. i was ‘i miss bernie, btw.
he changed his s.n. after that but i believe everybody knew that, maybe i was wrong but i knew.
he didnt keep it a secret in any way.

  6. G. Love July 5th, 2013 at 11:49 pm

I’d rest Kuroda until after the break and then unleash him fresh and rested.

We have to win tomorrow though. Hughes will throw his clunker Sunday.

If they’re not signing Hughes, and they’re not, they have to deal him for a bat to a contender that has more O than starting pitching. If a Ricky Nolasco rental can net something decent, Hughes can.

I’ll take my chances with CC, Nova, Phelps, Nuno and hopefully Kuroda again next year. If Pineda makes it back, great.

And I hope that Jose Ramirez pushes his way into the rotation next season.

  7. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 11:49 pm

great win tonight! wells had a great game, cano had a great game, whatever that SS’s name is he had a great game and the manager had a great game.

and ivan nova was f’in awesome!

this is a good team and fun to root for!

    night all!

  8. jmv July 5th, 2013 at 11:50 pm

I am a big Phelps fan, but he’s the one that has shown he can be a swing man without damaging the goods. He only needs to do it until october.

Next year, CC, Pineda (crossing fingers), Nova, Phelps, to begin with

  9. G. Love July 5th, 2013 at 11:51 pm

    Nick,

I’m seriously concerned that Nova needs to be dissed to show up like this. Whatever that defect is in his thought process it needs to get fixed because he can’t fall apart all the time and force the team to punish him in order to get him to perform again.

He’s got to grow up and grow into what he can be here. There’s literally hundreds of millions of dollars waiting for him if he can pull it off.

  10. jmv July 5th, 2013 at 11:51 pm

Nuno will be next year’s Phelps

    Nite, Ys Guy

  13. yankeefeminista July 5th, 2013 at 11:52 pm

In the past, Nova has also been sent down even when he was pitching well because unlike other some of our other pitchers including Hughes and Freddy, Nova has had options.

  14. Pat M. July 5th, 2013 at 11:53 pm

Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup )…..When is his self imposed suspension over ???? He’s also very busy this time of the year on The Cape and he also expanded his business this season……Hope the old back stop returns soon though

  15. Nick in SF July 5th, 2013 at 11:53 pm

Ys Guy, in your original post on this subject you very strongly implied that randy trashed Cashman all the time before the 2009 postseason and then changed his name.

He’s been randy l. the entire time I’ve been reading this blog, which dates back to 2007. “Tin Cup” is a nickname that Pat M. uses for him from time to time, but that’s it.

Here’s randy posting as randy in 2007:

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....ent-126883

That was a very strange and unfounded accusation.

  16. Ys Guy July 5th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

sorry, imo the biggest long-term questions coming into this season were:
can phelps and nova take 2 rotation spots. (can nunez be a f/t SS was the other big one)
no sure answers yet but its looking like we have 2 yeses and a ‘who knows’

  17. Nick in SF July 5th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

“I’m seriously concerned that Nova needs to be dissed to show up like this.’

Well, if you think I’m the reason the Yanks lose, how about your Kickstarter sends me to Nova’s next start? Could there be a bigger diss? Lets’ see how he reacts then. He might throw a perfect game.

  18. jackamir July 5th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

Man, I am watching the Angels vs Red Sox and the Angels have an awful look to them. They have worst contracts long term than the Yankees. Pujols & Hamilton are really awful.

  19. G. Love July 5th, 2013 at 11:58 pm

    Nick,

My Kickstarter is going to send you to the Island on Lost. You can hang out there with Hurley and wait for scantily clad women to crash on the island who need your help to find out where the beer is.

  20. Hankflorida July 5th, 2013 at 11:59 pm

I started with Mel Allen on the radio and never had such analysis that dissected a team like listening to Kay, O’Neil and Singleton. Here is is what I heard:
    1. The O’s are not going to give Overbay anything to hit with a runner on first and two out

because they have Luis, Stewart and Adams following him.
    2. With this lineup, the Yankees look more like a National League team.
    3. The Yankees are not going to score with the three run homer so they have to string a lot of hits together to score and that is the problem.
    4. They can’t put right handed hitters in the mix so bringing a left-handed pitcher to face four lefty hitters in a row is a no brainer.
    5. They have not a lefty pinch hitter left on the bench because they are carrying thirteen pitchers, and with all the injuries, they really have no one to bring up.

After covering this team and knowing the ins and outs of baseball, I think that these broadcasters

  21. jmv July 5th, 2013 at 11:59 pm

I like Nunez, but I don’t see him as the Yankees’ SS for years to come. I don’t see Adams as our regular 3B, either. And I like him, too.

  22. J. Alfred Prufrock July 5th, 2013 at 11:59 pm

    YsGuy,

I don’t really care what you say to me, but your trolling of Yankeefeminista tonight was relentless and ugly.

I don’t know what your problem is, but you need to cut that crap out. Some others here, I don’t even bother to say anything to, because they’re hopeless, but you, I thought had some sense.

    Good night.

  23. Rich in NJ July 5th, 2013 at 11:59 pm

They are probably going to have to trade starter for a bat, Hughes or Phelps seem logical.

  24. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:00 am

I hope Hughes dominates so he can boost his trade value to the Dodgers or Giants or Padres, anyone in the NL West in a big park.

  25. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 12:01 am

tin cup was not a nickname it was a screenname. thats what i knew him as when i got here.

he may have used randy before that but he used tin cup when i got here.

  26. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:01 am

Do they still have that control room with the satellite TV that you can watch all the baseball games on? I have a bad feeling that was one of the many things that Locke blew up.

I also wouldn’t mind hanging out with those two sexy gals who lived in the underwater station.

If I can still watch all the games, I might agree to this deal, though I don’t know how that helps Nova.

  27. G. Love July 6th, 2013 at 12:03 am

    Nick,

Face it. You can’t help Nova.

    You’re “The Cooler”.

The Dharma Initiative is calling. Namaste!

  28. Pat M. July 6th, 2013 at 12:03 am

Nick in SF……I remember some of those posters from those days. Miss The Bobcat and Rebecca of course.

  29. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 12:04 am

“I hope Hughes dominates so he can boost his trade value to the Dodgers or Giants or Padres, anyone in the NL West in a big park.”

Has Gardner raised his trade value too, or has he entrenched himself?

  30. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:05 am

It’s pretty awesome Ichiro is not washed up. Almonte could be for real. Plus Gardner. It looks like their OF is set for 2014. Wells as 4th OF. Boesch.

If they added a bat, where would he play?

  31. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 12:06 am

but i had no doubt that he was the same guy after the yankees won the WS in ’09. he was chastened about his cashman criticism for about 2/3 of the next season but then got back at it full-bore.

which is fine as i say we’ve debated every decision the team has made from 08 on.

and he knows his sh*t. but that doesnt make him right. (09 and montero come to mind)

ill be glad when he comes back (this might even p*ss him off enough to jump in tonight.)

but i really really have to go now.

ill come back tomorrow and debate whatever ‘stupid’ decision girardi makes tomorrow like he did today.

    :)

  32. G. Love July 6th, 2013 at 12:06 am

    Rich,

Gardner is entrenched unless it’s for Stanton.

  33. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:06 am

“tin cup was not a nickname it was a screenname.”

I would be deeply impressed if you could find posts where he used that name. It’s certainly possible.

I still don’t know what your point was. It sure looks like you’re suggesting that he changed his name to get away from his previous trashing of Cashman.

tin cup used to kill cashman.

from the time i came in here he just killed cashman. through the end of 08 and for most of 09 he just killed them every day.

those of us who maybe thought the guy was ok had to put up with it constantly.

    then the ’09 postseason happened.

    then he changed his name.

whatever, cashman was the idiot that did that. then they won and the idiot comments kinda stopped.

    then he changed his s.n..

    just sayin.

    What are you just sayin?

And he certainly wouldn’t change his screen name for any dumb reason as you suggested.

  41. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:17 am

Ys Guy it almost seems like you want to curb the bashing of Girardi by calling out posters when they turn out dead wrong. Do you honestly think it matters? Their behavior is based on compulsion. It’s like trying to break a crack or heroine or caffeine addiction. No matter how wrong you prove them to be or to what great extent you humble any one of them, the excessive bashing will continue because again, the personality types that do it are OCD. But I admire your determination if that’s your goal. If you’re just having fun – I’m entertained.

  44. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:20 am

Perhaps Pat M. first called Randy Tin Cup based on the screen name.

  45. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:22 am

You can ask him yourself in September 2008, when he’s posting as randy l:

but the negativity that come with the bulk of who’s on here now chased most of them away.

yf is great but not above any criticism.

like i said several times, i respect her opinion, but she has to stand up for it like any one else.

and she doesnt need to be defended after she’s gone as i didnt say anything about her after she left.

    (until you brought it up)

i want a piece of that.

  70. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:42 am

Ys Guy, you’ve said a whole lot more than “he posted as tin cup when i came here” and I have actually not said that he never did, although I have already demonstrated that he was posting as randy l in the years 2007, 2008, and 2009, so the entire premise of your original posts on this subject are bunk.

You need to get a good night’s sleep and sober up before you make any wagers.

    No offense.

  71. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:44 am

To “pull a Stuckey” is to lose a bet and then never pay up. Let’s be clear.

  72. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:44 am

So Nick you will intoxicate a sober man but refuse to place bets with him once you’ve got him drunk? You are a noble gambler.

  73. I Am Winning July 6th, 2013 at 12:45 am

I agree with keeping Kuroda out until after the all star break. Give him another short start in the minors, and give him some extra rest. An extra 10 days could mean the difference between staying healthy for the rest of the year and re-injury. Let Nova pitch for him instead, and we will figure out who slots where after seeing Hughes and Phelps pitch. If Nova has another great game, Phelps a bad one, and Hughes an average one, Phelps might be odd man out, and be put in the bullpen. Phelps as a long man is great because if he comes in when the starter doesn’t have it, he can give us second life.

  74. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 12:45 am

I have been posting here since at least 2008 and I never remember him as Tin Cup.

I’ll bet a week blogcation that RANDY never posted on Lohud as Tin Cup (once doesn’t count).

  75. J. Alfred Prufrock July 6th, 2013 at 12:46 am

    YsGuy,

Sorry you felt slighted about Trenton, but that was some Nick’s idea without having consulted me, so I’m sorry that was so awkward, but not my doing.

The challenge, in here, is to not cross a line of decency and still “debate” Yankee business. Can you do that?

  76. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:47 am

    ‘You are a noble gambler.”

This particular wager suggestion is a diversion from the original point and am I supposed to hire a team from Bangalore to comb over every post from 2007 through 2009 to prove a negative?

  77. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:48 am

Maybe Randy liked Pat M’s nickname and posted as Tin Cup just a few times in honor of it.

“i have no problem with debating, i dont fall into the ‘blog line’ that cashman sucks and girardi is stupid like you do every time.”

Why is it always suck from the defenders rather than not as good as he should be?

  79. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:51 am

That’s a possibility, Brestero, but that would be quite different from the original implication that randy was posting under a name and insulting Cashman all the time and then changed that name after the 2009 postseason, which is clearly not the case and has been demonstrated as such with both documentary evidence and the testimony of blog contemporaries.

  80. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:52 am

Django Unchained was possibly the best movie ever.

  81. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 12:53 am

i debate. show me a post where i crossed some line you didnt.

my original point with yf was that people were referrring to girardi as ‘binder joe’ and ‘clueless’ regarding staring wells tonight. when she challenged me, i quoted her calling him exactly that. she put it off to ‘alot of people call him that”

that was pretty much it. then people thought they had to defend her.

whatever. shes long gone and i still respect her. but i challenged and will continue to challenge people calling joe ‘binder joe” no big deal.

unless you think she needs you to run to her defense after she’s left and i dropped questioning what she said.

    at least one person did.

  82. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:54 am

What if the few times Randy posted as Tin Cup came before the WS and Ys Guy’s first impression of Tin Cup was already formed?

  83. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:55 am

“Sorry you felt slighted about Trenton, but that was some Nick’s idea without having consulted me, so I’m sorry that was so awkward, but not my doing.”

Consult conshmult, I suggested it in public on this blog! That was the consulting.

Now it’s going to be even tougher to get you two star-crossed bloggers together, alas.

  84. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 12:55 am

“Django Unchained was possibly the best movie ever.”

It was really good. Best ever, not imo.

  85. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:55 am

Feminista said she said that about Joe as a reverse jinx which was a crock of poop.

  86. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 12:56 am

so rich, you never said that cashman sucks? or insulted him in such a way?

im not going to go look that up at all. i ll take your word for it.

really, you never said anything like that?

  87. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 12:57 am

“What if the few times Randy posted as Tin Cup came before the WS and Ys Guy’s first impression of Tin Cup was already formed?”

What if it was Kevin Costner posting on the blog? What would that mean?

  88. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:58 am

I can’t stand Cashman and Kevin Long. But I like Girardi. I like Pena as well. I loved Showalter growing up as a kid.

  89. jlyanks85 July 6th, 2013 at 12:58 am

People talk about the arod contract being awful. His is nothing compared to pujols contract. He’s only in the 2nd year of a 10 year deal and he already looks washed up.

  90. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 12:59 am

“so rich, you never said that cashman sucks? or insulted him in such a way?”

Sure. I may be alone, but I do vent here on occasion.

But in more sober moments, I have given a balanced assessment of his tenure.

He is an average GM. But not good enough.

  91. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 12:59 am

I chuckled when I saw the headline “Arod won’t quit on the Yankees”.

I was thinking, how nice of you but PLEASE DO!

  92. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:01 am

seriously no, nick, jpru, randy, whoever…if we’re at a scranton or trenton game, the beer’s on me. yankees game are tougher but im still game for it.

we’re all yankees fans, we all want more championships and we’re all gonna root for the next guy to get the big hit, whether we think that should be Z or wells.

    really…

  93. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 1:01 am

A-Rod needs to hire Ortiz’s public relations people, or maybe just that magic dust that he sprinkles on gullible “reporters.”

  94. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 1:01 am

Well Nick, Pat M. has ties to the Hollywood area so…

Maybe Kevin Cosner did so good portraying a baseball player because HE’S RANDY

and maybe Randy did so good at impersonating a baseball expert because HE’S KEVIN COSNER

But then how do you explain Dances with Wolves?

  95. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:02 am

Y’s I’ll take the bet. In honor of Tin Cup a 1 week blogcation is the wager.

You have to produce multiple Tin Cup posts on lohud that can be attributed to Randy.

  96. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 1:03 am

I never saw Dances With Wolves or Waterworld, so I don’t have to explain them. If you want to fund a Kickstarter for me to watch those movies and then proffer an explanation, you’d better get started. Kickstarted, if you will.

  97. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:05 am

just like every ST, im trying really hard to psych myself up for arod. i hate the guy but i’ve hated alot of yankees and bosox and orioles and …..

we’re stuck with him and he’s stuck with us and we need him to contribute even if we hate him.

i originally came to this blog b/c i couldnt contain my feeling that if arod opted out they had to tell him to take a hike.

so randy was wrong about cashman in 09 just as much as i was wrong about arod in 09.

but here we are, stuck together.

i hate it but im trying, i m reaaaaaly trying to get ‘up’ for calique…um…arod to come back and contribute.

i liked clemens alot less and lived with it….

    LET’S GO ARO…..oh, man…..AROD!

    …there i said it….

  98. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 1:05 am

Horrible actor, the Keanu Reeves of his time. Good scripts saved him every time.

  99. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:06 am

Costner is a rock star. I saw him in concert on the Fourth of July oddly enough.

And no I wasn’t there to see him play….it’s a long story.

  100. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 1:07 am

He was okay in No Way Out. He didn’t really have to do much, however.

  101. I Am Winning July 6th, 2013 at 1:08 am

    jlyanks85,

Pujols’ contract actually made sense at the time. The Yankees offering ARod another 10 years and more money after he opted out, was ridiculous. They weren’t in competition with anyone for his contract. 2005 was the last time ARod had 600 at bats. He misses plenty of games due to injuries, age, and random rest Girardi needs to give him. He also hasn’t hit over .290 since 2008 and had over 25 homers just once since 2006. 2010 was the last time he has hit over 20 homers due to all of the injuries. Worst of all, the Yankees still have to pay him for another several years. So if you are trying to make us fans feel better about the contract, it won’t happen.

But I will state that, at this point, the Pujols contract looks terrible, and they have to deal with that contract quite a few years longer than the Yankees do with the ARod contract, but it’s still too long and too much for his production.

  102. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:09 am

    “LET’S GO ARO…..oh, man…..AROD!

    …there i said it….”

    The cloud has lifted!

I can see clearly now the rain is gone.. I can see all obstacles in my way

  103. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:09 am

tar, ill go this far. if randy admits he posted as tin cup you’re out for a week. if he doesnt, im out.

im not gonna go diving for quotes and trying to tie them to randy, we’ll just let randy say yeah or nay, i know my boy (HA!) will be truthful.

btw (HA) was a laugh an ‘my boy’ not at randy’s reputation which in my mind is stellar.

    as for his opinions…..

  104. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:10 am

How about that bet… you can time it for Arods return

  105. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:12 am

coster is a terrible actor but ‘crash davis’ called for a stiff and he was THE MAN.
    sarandon did the rest.

    great casting…

  106. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:12 am

    as for his opinions…..

They can be out there , we can agree on that.

    You’re on for the bet.

    Good night all.

  107. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 1:12 am

I would rather see Arod’s acting over Costner. Will he do movies? I saw the Babe recently for the first time with John Goodman. I cannot believe that large man still has circulating blood. The story about the Babe’s childhood and young adult life was kind of sad. The guy was a total party animal though. His stats look downright cartoonish, even in his late late years.

  108. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 1:12 am

“Pujols’ contract actually made sense at the time.”

I don’t think a 10 year contract, let along an 8 year contract, makes sense for any player over 30.

  109. Pat M. July 6th, 2013 at 1:12 am

Nick in SF……Costner had even less to do in ” The Big Chill”….Great sound track…. I do think that there was a person who posted as Tin Cup, however it wasn’t Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup ) that we’re all so fond of…….But I will side with you and Tar that the old boy wouldn’t be switching his id to chuck and duck topics or issues. He’s a upfront guy, what you see is what you’re going to get….Very old school in that regard

  110. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:13 am

yeah, im in tar, but well just leave it up to randy’s word instead of looking up quotes.

if randy says he posted as tin cup, you’re out for a week if he says he never did , im out for a week.

    its a bet
    “put it on the board!

  111. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 1:13 am

Let the word go forth that I defended randy when he could not defend himself. It brings a tear to the eye.

  112. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 1:14 am

I can recall reading a piece on Coster in the ’80s. He had a speaking role in “The Big Chill” and it was edited out.

  113. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 1:15 am

“He’s a upfront guy, what you see is what you’re going to get…”

Let’s not go overboard! randy…. very troubled as a blog commenter. But not one to change his name to get away from past opinions.

  114. I Am Winning July 6th, 2013 at 1:15 am

    Rich,

We are talking in relative baseball terms at the time.

Personally, I agree, but for guys with his talent, those were the going years and rates. And as I mentioned, compared to the ARod contract it made sense.

In my opinion, anything over 4 years is way too much of a risk to be worth taking. But again, that won’t sign many top players unless they double up the money per year.

  115. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:16 am

ok so if im wrong ill admit it and drop out for a week, like i said i would.

i always admit when im wrong on here, i did it earlier tonight when i said something like

“i said they should walk davis and make weiters beat them” or somesuch then wiethers (ahole) homered.

i have strong opinions but i dont shy from them.

    if im wrong ill pay.

either way , im looking forward to randy returning .

  116. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 1:16 am

Nick would you buy Randy a beer? How many? It’s risky.

  117. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:17 am

it should be noted that missing a week on here is something i do pretty much every month.

    but im still in.

  118. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:17 am

    Deal Y’s

I think the loser might actually end up being the winner.

As Pete A said…..”this place is like crack”.

  119. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 1:18 am

    I hear you, I Am…

I just think you have to say no. I hope the Yankees learn to do that.

They should have extended (or at least tried to extend) Cano for a second time a couple of years ago.

The problem is that when you can’t develop talent, and are goofy enough to tell fans you are going to be in a position to win the WS every single year, you are more prone to do dumb things.

  120. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:18 am

randy is baseball gold. knowlegeable, opinionated, erascible. if i owned a minor league team id hire him to manage.

but we just happen to disagree on a few things.

    like everything.

but other than that, id love to meet the guy….

  121. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:19 am

    crack addict here….

  122. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:19 am

now im wondering what s.n. my boy pete is using here these days….

  123. Ys Guy July 6th, 2013 at 1:21 am

ok i get locked out if i dont head home now.

nice hating and being hated on with you guys.

    its just a yankees thing.

    let’s go yankees!

  124. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 1:21 am

Would I buy randy a beer?

Well, sure, although he’s said a lot of personally nasty things to me.

Would I have to be with him when he drank it?

  125. Tar July 6th, 2013 at 1:21 am

    “crack addict here….”

Umm…. that would include all of us.

I remember one other time he said we should all “get a life”. I think it was December and we were all obsessing over something or other……. so I guess he had a point.. :D

  126. Pat M. July 6th, 2013 at 1:22 am

Rich in NJ……Kevin Costner was the friend that off’d himself to set up the story line in The Big Chill…..And you’re correct, his one line was cut and his nudish scene with Tilley was also whacked

  127. Jerkface July 6th, 2013 at 1:25 am

    Ys Guy,

Its super easy. google “tin cup” site:yankees.lhblogs.com/2007/ or 08/09 whatever you want. Unfortunately no results. It never happened.

  128. Jesus Bustero July 6th, 2013 at 1:27 am

Nick it’s only fair if you match Ys Guy with Pruf that you meet up with Randy and have beer over a game.

I’ll have a beer with Trisha (I’ll wear ear plugs, the good kind).

    Just kidding Trisha.

  129. Nick in SF July 6th, 2013 at 1:34 am

Faulty premise, Brestero. randy is boycotting Yankee games and he didn’t go to Yankee games before he started boycotting Yankee games.

Also, G. Love has banned me from Yankee games.

  130. Pat M. July 6th, 2013 at 1:36 am

Rich in NJ……I’ll be driving a 2008 BMW 650i tomorrow. 57,000 miles and he asking for 46 K…..Black on black., I want a ragtop !!!

  131. Pat M. July 6th, 2013 at 1:51 am

Goodnight all and good morning to Doreen and the breakfast club……Great team win. Cano’s glove play made this possible right from the get go in this game

  132. Rich in NJ July 6th, 2013 at 2:31 am

Nice, Pat. I am currently leasing the SUV.

So Copeland is signing with the Pacers. IMO, he is better than Bargniani at this point. I would be happy to be proved wrong.

  133. David in Cal July 6th, 2013 at 2:44 am

Yes, Nova should get his old job back, and the person he should replace is Andy Pettitte. In recent starts, I think Andy has been the weakest of the 5 starters. That will be a hard decision for Joe Girardi to make. I don’t think he’ll do it.

  134. 4 NYY July 6th, 2013 at 2:58 am

Nova’s offspeed stuff made the night for him !

FB is good, but he can’t live with it all night in most games.

If he can mix it up and throw all for strikes, he will be here, period.

  135. Doreen July 6th, 2013 at 7:15 am

First, what a start by Nova last night!!!! Thank heavens he got a win out of it. It would have been embarrassing to have the best start by a Yankee pitcher this year end in a loss.

Second, I have been here, either posting or reading, since November of 2006. I cannot recall Randy l EVER posting as Tin Cup. Pat M gave him that nickname and almost always refers to him as such, but Randy himself, as far as anyone can tell whether anyone here posts as another s.n., has never posted as Tin cup. But more specific to the argument at hand, Randy never ever posted as one entity to voice his displeasure with Cashman, and then post as a different screen name to distance himself. Randy has been consistent, vocal, and unapologetic about his feelings for Cashman.

After 2009, Randy had a few exchanges with me to the effect that he might have to tone down the criticism because he felt that Cashman had done a good job to make 2009 happen. Didn’t change his mind about what he personally felt about Cashman, but simply that he might deserve some benefit of the doubt after 2009.

Randy held true to toning down the anti-Cashman rhetoric, until Montero got traded.

It is, I think, relevant to remember that in the earlier days of this blog, it was easy to change screen names, and sometimes people would change their screen name on a lark, for a brief time, but most always told people when they did so, or, more often, added to their screen name parenthetically. Nick in SF, for instance, who travels a bit, would change his screen name to Nick in (name that place) with some frequency. So, it could definitely be that Randy added tin cup to his s.n., or maybe even posted as such a time or two ( though I do not recall ever seeing tin cup as a s.n. here), BUT it would NEVER have been to distance himself from his opinions.

Randy and I seldom agreed on certain things – okay, we never agreed on Cashman – but we were always able to have great conversations about any other topic.

  136. MG July 6th, 2013 at 7:47 am

was there a baseball game or a rain out last night?

I can’t tell with all of the talk about an alleged use of an alternate screen name…
