Yankees lineup: Ishikawa playing first; Almonte hitting second

Posted by: vmercogliano - Posted in Misc on Jul 08, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Vin Mercogliano here from the Bronx for the third day in a row. Today’s lineup looks a bit different from what we’ve seen the past few days, with newly acquired first baseman Travis Ishikawa getting the start just one day after being claimed on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. I’ll be back with pregame notes in a little bit.

Brett Gardner CF
Zoilo Almonte LF
Robinson Cano 2B
Travis Hafner DH
Vernon Wells RF
Travis Ishikawa 1B
Luis Cruz SS
Alberto Gonzalez 3B
Austin Romine C

RHP Phil Hughes

New Start lets move on from an ugly loss

  2. Yankee Trader July 8th, 2013 at 3:43 pm

He (Torre)was terrible with bullpens however and was pretty lucky to have a dummy proof closer for all those years……

    ————
    Blake

Was Torre really a bad bullpen manager because of overuse of certain pitchers? Scott Proctor? Tanyon Sturtz?

Girardi used Logan in 80 games last year, up from 64 the year before. Who knows how many other times he was up in the bullpen but not used. Girardi is considered a good BP manager.

Maybe it’s the quality of the bullpen arms that makes the manager look good! Maybe?

  3. Nick in SF July 8th, 2013 at 3:44 pm

I wanted Ishikawa batting cleaneup, WTF Girardi?!?!??!?!

  4. Locke July 8th, 2013 at 3:44 pm

Screw all the critics, I love Alex!!!

I do too. He’s always seems to do the wrong thing, but I really like him. I can’t wait till he’s back with the team. :)

“Maybe it’s the quality of the bullpen arms that makes the manager look good! Maybe?”

It clearly helps, but good bullpen managers don’t pitch an already arm weary (or worse) Tom Gordon with a 9 run lead on a playoff game v. the Red Sox.

  6. sportsvoiceinmyhead July 8th, 2013 at 3:45 pm

    Who got sent down?

  7. I Am Winning July 8th, 2013 at 3:46 pm

Logan pitches to just one batter at times, throwing less than 3 pitches in a game. Innings are far more important than games played, and you know that. Total pitches are also important but not a very easy stat to obtain. Total games is seriously worthless.

  8. Wave Your Hat July 8th, 2013 at 3:48 pm

Am I supposed to be excited about Ishikawa?

  9. fantasygame101 July 8th, 2013 at 3:50 pm

gonzalez in the lineup means adams is being sent down. Hope he gets 1b reps in the minors. Why not overbay against a righty pitcher?

  10. I Am Winning July 8th, 2013 at 3:50 pm

I’m excited to see Almonte at the top of the order. One reason is to see how he handles it, the #2 spot is a lot more prestigious than batting 7-9. I also remember Cano solidifying himself in that 2 spot as a great hitter. He thrived up there batting in front of some of baseballs greats. Cano should provide Almonte with some nice meatballs today. Hopefully Zoilo capitalizes.

I recall she said she had received threatening calls at her work-place, as well.

SMH that’s taking things way too far. I always liked Betsy even when she was on one of her Hughes rants.

    29 YO Ishikawa:

    Lefty Hitter / Lefty Thrower.

Great OBP in AAA — .413

    End of Lyle Overbay ?….or just a ‘pinch-hitter’ for a week ?

  13. fantasygame101 July 8th, 2013 at 3:53 pm

I guess with the game winning hit, wells will get the benefits of the doubt again.

Pretty funny to think back on this, but Betsy was probably more right about Hughes than any of us.

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 8th, 2013 at 3:54 pm

austinmac and Wave – I guess I don’t consider 1/2 run below league average to be weak. It’s not great and it’s not terrible.

However, you can view it any way you want. No skin off my nose!

  18. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

She was right for the wrong reasons. A developing pitcher with his mL pedigree deserves a chance to develop.

  19. fantasygame101 July 8th, 2013 at 3:56 pm

I assume that ishikawa is a right handed bat to complement overbay but he is a lefty too. This is interesting?

  21. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 8th, 2013 at 3:57 pm

By the way mick, if you’re around, or if anyone else is around who can’t understand why people can’t get along, you can take a look at this. It was never answered in the affirmative, by the way, but answered many time since by hostile and nasty references, such as the one G. Love came up with today.

    Oh well!

    :)

trisha – true pinstriped blue April 5th, 2013 at 2:30 pm

    G. Love why don’t we declare a truce. We’re both high on Overbey. Isn’t that a start?

In other news, didn’t the Orioles let Ishikawa go?

  23. Wave Your Hat July 8th, 2013 at 3:59 pm

I like Hughes when he pitches well. I am less high on him when he doesn’t.

“She was one of the few that took such a hard stance on him. It was so radical at the time that it came off as flat out hate . Lol things are certainly different now”

Against, I think that betsy wanted so badly for Hughes to excel that when he didn’t, her hard stance was more of a protective mechanism than anything.

betsy many times acknowledged here that she was a worrier by nature and so she tended to look on the downside of life. I always respected that acknowledgment.

    :D

Wave, would have been nice if you did the same for me in return…

“Well, they are half a run per game below the AL average after 88 games, so it’s safe to say they have a weak offense.

I can’t imagine getting in an argument over this, it’s a commonplace, like saying “it ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity.”

    trisha,

I think most people’s reference point is the “typical yankee offense” which was always above league average. This year we are averaging a full run per game less then last year. And last year was one of the lower scoring years of the past ten years. We are scoring less runs per game (on average of course) since 1990, and we all remember how bad those teams were!

But, in this matter there is a right, and a wrong, way to view it. The offense is weak. It is my sincere hope it will get better, and I believe it will once Granderson, Jeter and, hopefully, ARod get back and are productive. Probably not before.

That said, it doesn’t mean I think you are a bad person. Just misguided in this instance.

The person who was posting above from “San Fernando” is more than likely C R 9. Please just ignore or email Chad if he acts up.

    ____

This is the crap I’m talking about. Now, I made it obvious to anyone with quarter of a brain that it was C R 9.

But there wasn’t any reason to point out it was me. You could have allowed me to post as if I was a normal human being, and left me alone. I was away from the blog for the better part of 2 years, came back because my anger about boston, especially after Boston Marathon, was getting to a point of being consumed daily with the ideas of doing bad things to bostonians.

I didnt come back to cause trouble, but to try to start anew while also releasing some of the rage that consumes me. I’m not going to apologize again, but it was stupid of me to go after Nick, the only one to knowingly make conversation with me after my appearance. No, I didnt think Nick sent any emails to Chad about me. The thought process was, he’s the most liked person here, and every time ive gotta take crap from others, I’d post his family names… and then the people doling out the crap would feel bad for Nick and leave me alone. Obviously, those other people dont really care as long as they can deride me.

Does it feel good to deride someone that, while a genius, suffers from severe mental disease?

  68. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2013 at 4:29 pm

I don’t think Adams should have been sent down. He had been getting on base at over a .400 rate for a while.

“But I really don’t like ugly, nasty, vindictive, and vitriolic.”

But, we should just remember that often one person’s plain, honest statement is another person’s vitriolic statement. And besides, we are all just digital constructs here so there’s no reason to let things get under our respective skins.

  70. UpState July 8th, 2013 at 4:31 pm

This may be good for David Adams.

The minor league stint seemingly gave Nunez an ‘enema boost’ making sure he wants to stay in the big leagues…..
First 2 Nunez games were 1000% percent better than the beginning of his year.

Maybe Adams will experience the same.

  71. Wave Your Hat July 8th, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Who would you have sent down? Saying a pitcher is not allowed in Yankeeland.

  72. Rich in NJ July 8th, 2013 at 4:31 pm

And it’s not like Cruz is good:

“Who would you have sent down? Saying a pitcher is not allowed in Yankeeland.”

    Gonzo.

  74. Rick in San Fernando July 8th, 2013 at 4:33 pm

And as for Trisha, I said/did some terrible things, but she’s a forgiving person. I sometimes email her because my OCD strangles me. She’s the only one I can confide in about my desires regarding doing harm to bostonians. If I spoke to my therapists about such things, they’d have to report me if they felt I was an imminent threat. Because of her and couple local friends, I’ve begun going to church to find peace and freedom. I havent gone often, mainly because I’m too depressed to do anything when boston teams are doing well, which is nearly all the time. I have made an attempt to get better, and I think I can someday.

  75. Wave Your Hat July 8th, 2013 at 4:34 pm

    “Gonzo.”

Well, when they called up Gonzo the game was up for Adams. So they weren’t going to send Gonzo down.

As scarey as the lineup is, imagine it without Cano, instantly it would be the worst lineup in baseball.

I liked it when Gardner was the 8th best hitter in the lineup, not the 2nd best, especially since he has been producing much less the same when he was considered the 8th best (to me) in the lineup.

That’s basically what this team is filled with, Rich. I appreciate the contributions of Overbay and Wells, but those 2, Nix, Stewart, Cruz, among many others are “known suck.”

Please spare the Nix can play any position nonsense. There are plenty other failed major leaguers that can play any position with average defense and horrid offense.

The Ishikawa move was news to me. Did the Yankees claim him yesterday? I remember his days as a Giant 1B. He played great D. His bat was ok. No power. Not sure how much he has improved his hitting since???

Adams was given plenty of chances to remain on the team.
    35 games-116 at bats
I would like to think ARod is returning even sooner now that Adams has been demoted.

“Does it feel good to deride someone that, while a genius, suffers from severe mental disease?”

I know you’re not asking me, but I am going to respond. As I don’t think it feels too great to deride anyone, I think it is especially heinous to deride someone with severe mental disease. Forgiveness is not a huge part of everyone’s characteristic bank and nowhere is that more apparent than on this blog. I think you’ve attempted to be honest with us as to your personal issues. I’d rather try kindness as a way of dealing than nastiness anyway.

There are people here who have never forgiven you for what you did in the past and for driving away people who no longer post here. But I’ll say that of all the people you tormented, what you put me through was at the top of the list. I had the option of hating you forever and allowing it to eat away at me, or forgiving you and hoping that you would get the help you needed to become the good person I truly believe you are. I wish everyone would give you the same chance, but the only behavior over which I have control is my own.

  81. Rick in San Fernando July 8th, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Understood, trisha. But from what I’ve seen, the blog is a better place without Erica, SJ44, GB7. There’s more baseball talk than a few years ago. I always felt bad about Doreen and Pat M, they’re both probably good people… but when I go on a rampage, I leave lots of destruction behind me. I actually hope to meet up with Pat M in September, buy him a couple drinks, have him meet my gf, and personally apologizing to him.

Trisha, would you email Pat M and see if he’d be interested.

“But, we should just remember that often one person’s plain, honest statement is another person’s vitriolic statement.”

Wave, when someone gets personally ugly, that’s vitriol. I truly think we all know how to distinguish one from the other.

    Anyway, later y’all.

I’ll be happy to do that, and from everything I know about him and his goodness, I’ll be shocked if he says anything but yes. But if he does, I’ll let you know that too.

    NIX:

The basic definition of a utility (back-up) player.

Asked to be a starter….not a starter-caliber ballplayer; but always worked hard.

To date – gave us about a .240 performance.

Better avg than ….Wells, Hafner, Tex, Nunez, Youk, and a host of others…

Not an All-Star – but should NOT be a ‘whipping boy’

  87. Wave Your Hat July 8th, 2013 at 4:47 pm

“Wave, when someone gets personally ugly, that’s vitriol. I truly think we all know how to distinguish one from the other. ”

I’m personally not so sure. We often think we recognize it in others, but not so often in ourselves. So that makes me think it’s too subjective to get upset about.

Anyway, a comment section always becomes disputatious, and when that happens people often take things personally. Just the way of the world.

I believe in redemption and forgiveness when it’s sincerely asked for. The problem with the Internet is that nobody really knows one another or what motives they may have or if they are even who they say they are…..which leads to a lot of caution being shown (for good reason)

My personality is to believe in people until they prove me wrong…..

  91. Rick in San Fernando July 8th, 2013 at 4:52 pm

He’s a utility player that would be utilized probably twice a month, if at all, by any other MLB team.

The team would be better served giving a young guy in the minors the chance to stick at the major league level, rather than running Nix out there everyday.

He purposefully played through injury because he knew the Yankees are the only team stupid enough to play him every day. I knew it would take a DL stint to get him off our everyday roster. Same with Chris Stewart.

When the Yankees had good hitting catchers, the catcher would sit every “day game after a night game,” but good ole Stewie plays every damn game. I dont care if Romine hasnt hit yet. Neither did Jose Iglesias hit. It’s sickening how the greatest and winningest organization in world history runs Stewie out there every single day.

    Rick,

I wasn’t part of your apparent misdeeds so it is easier to be understanding. However, I will judge you by your posts going forward. Life is very hard and illness makes it harder. Just don’t harm or threaten anyone, and you’re good with me.

I try to be as inoffensive as our offense. :)

  94. Rick in San Fernando July 8th, 2013 at 4:56 pm

The Yankees should pursue Cliff Lee and Jon Papelbon at the trade deadline, if only to prevent the Red Sox from acquiring them and assuring themselves of another World Series.

Our package could be headlined by Stewie.

Regarding ARod and his rehab assignment, can anybody here tell me what
his plans are today and tomorrow?
    Does he play today
    Have a day off
Traveling to another location to resume his rehab assignment
    ???

Puig should be an All Star, baseball purist SUCK

  97. Rick in San Fernando July 8th, 2013 at 5:02 pm

Thanks austinmac. I suffer from bipolar, OCD, and depression. My moods are largely based on the success/failure of my new york teams and my disdain for boston teams. At this point in life, I’m more of a Boston hater than a New York fan. Meaning I care little about the success of New York and everything about the failure of them.

I went to Norway with my girlfriend at the end of April, blew $1500 on plane tickets, and I completely ruined our trip because I was physically ill and angry and obsessed with the Knicks the entire week. Once the Knicks had a 3-0 lead on the Celtics, I feared a repeat of 2004. I would rather have been been executed than suffer another devastating collapse at the hands of a boston team.

  98. austinmac July 8th, 2013 at 5:02 pm

Pretty much all of the Yankees’ players have played up to reasonable expectations. Plus, if Showalter got the credit for the one run win-loss record las year, Girardi should as well. Unless the walking wounded recover, it will be tough to hang in the wild card race, in my opinion. These guys, looking the the back of recent baseball cards, are not very good.

I don’t see the Cruz love. I would have preferred Adams stay. He was being patient and having better at bats.

He’s a utility player that would be utilized probably twice a month, if at all, by any other MLB team.

***CORRECT – HE’S A UTILITY PLAYER PLAYING REGULARLY

The team would be better served giving a young guy in the minors the chance to stick at the major league level, rather than running Nix out there everyday.

*** HAVEN’T THEY ALREADY TRIED 5 SHORTSTOPS & 4 THIRD BASEMEN TO DATE (REGARDLESS OF AGE) ?

He purposefully played through injury because he knew the Yankees are the only team stupid enough to play him every day. I knew it would take a DL stint to get him off our everyday roster. Same with Chris Stewart.

***SAME WITH STEWART. WHO DO WE HAVE ? WHO’s AVAILABLE ? ANGER DIRECTED IN WRONG DIRECTION.

When the Yankees had good hitting catchers, the catcher would sit every “day game after a night game,” but good ole Stewie plays every damn game. I dont care if Romine hasnt hit yet.

***ROMINE ISN’T EVEN A DECENT CATCHER YET, PUTTING ASIDE BEING AN ATROCIOUS HITTER.

*** STEWART IS STILL ALMOST AT .250….BETTER THAN MOST AT THIS POINT

Neither did Jose Iglesias hit. It’s sickening how the greatest and winningest organization in world history runs Stewie out there every single day.

***CRITICIZE OUR LACK OF DEPTH, NOT THE UTILITY PLAYERS !

    Warning Track,

I’ve seen nothing saying he is changing teams or not playing. I’m guessing he is at least hitting in Tampa. They really do need to find out if he can contribute.
