Travis Hafner isn’t exactly on a roll right now. Not only has he been slumping the last two-plus months, but he suffered a minor injury Wednesday night in what he called “a kind of freak incident.”
Between innings, the DH fouled a ball off the top of his left foot in the indoor cage and left for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 8-1 win over the Royals.
“It’s kind of embarrassing,” Hafner said. “It’s something I like to do, hit off the machine. I had it cranked up to 95, 100 miles an hour. The ball moves all over the place. I just fouled a ball off.
“It’s not bad. It’s still a little numb, but overall it feels pretty good.”
X-ray were negative. It’s a contusion. He’s down as day to day, but he hopes to be available for the series finale today.
Hafner went 0 for 2 and is now 1 for 19 on the homestand. He’s also 13 for his last 60 and down to .215 overall. Hard to remember his great April at this point.
“It’s just a matter of going out there and getting it going,” Hafner said. “Obviously I want to play at a better level than what I’m playing at. But I feel good. I just want to go out there and contribute and help the team.”
