Rodriguez: “Definitely a good check in the box”

Alex Rodriguez

When I posted about Alex Rodriguez’s latest rehab last night, the AP hadn’t moved an updated story with quotes and additional details. So, here’s what Rodriguez had to say about his home run and what’s supposed to be his final week of minor league games.

Also, a heads up, we’re going to try a chat tonight. I’ll be hosting a chat at the beginning of the All-Star Game. We’ll watch the cool parts together — the introductions, the early innings — and talk about it (or talk about the Yankees or whatever). Hang out for a little while if you can.

READING, Pa. (AP) — Alex Rodriguez “checked a lot of boxes” Monday during his first rehab appearance with the Double-A Trenton Thunder.

He ran the bases, was tested in the field several times and engaged in a lively 12-pitch at-bat with Reading left-hander Austin Wright.

And he also did something he hadn’t done in a months — he homered.

“It’s been a long time,” said Rodriguez, who couldn’t remember the last time he hit a home run.

He struggled in the American League playoffs last fall with the New York Yankees, and hadn’t done much at the plate during his first eight rehab appearances over the last two weeks following offseason hip surgery.

Monday he went 2 for 4 and played seven innings in the first of what could be three games with the Yankees’ Double-A Eastern League affiliate. The Thunder beat the Reading Fightin Phils 6-5.

The 37-year-old, 14-time All-Star was happy with every aspect of his game Monday, but especially so with his 400-foot, two-run homer to left in the fifth inning, in his third at-bat against the 23-year-old Wright. It was his first home run since Sept. 14 last season against Tampa Bay.

“To take a mid-90s fastball and hit it that way, I certainly was not able to do that the last two or three months of the season last year,” Rodriguez said. “That’s definitely a good check in the box.

“Yeah, that one felt really good. It felt pretty awesome. I’m very happy with that. The ball is definitely coming off the bat different (than it was last week).”

Alex RodriguezDespite looking so good on that swing, Rodriguez said he’ll need the entire 20-day rehab period that began July 2 before he’s ready to return to the Yankees.

“(I’m) about six days away,” he said. “I think I’m par for the course. It’s a process, it’s one step at a time. Tonight was by far the best I’ve felt.”

Before the game, Rodriguez met with about 20 media members and for the first time admitted that he failed to show up for a scheduled rehab game last Friday in Tampa, but said there is no riff between him and the club.

“Whatever I do with the organization, I will definitely keep private,” he said. “But I will tell you I think over the last several weeks we have had very productive conversations and I think we’re all aligned to come back on time and healthy.”

Rodriguez met with investigators from Major League Baseball in Tampa on Friday to face questions about the Biogenesis probe. Team officials expected him to report for a game with Class-A Tampa but he was a no-show.

On Monday, he would not address the Biogenesis case or his meeting with MLB officials probing the closed anti-aging clinic.

“I can’t touch that part,” he said. “I appreciate you asking that question, but due to the process we’re not allowed to talk about that, but will in due time I hope to.”

Rodriguez has said he used PEDs while with Texas from 2001-03, but has denied using them since. He was linked to Biogenesis in a report in January by Miami New Times.

It is unknown whether Rodriguez refused to answer MLB’s questions, but he struck an optimistic note when asked about the state of the game given the ongoing investigation.

“I think the game is in a great place,” he said. “I love the game; I’ve been in love with the game since I was born. I’ve spent close to 20 years playing professionally. The game is doing well, and hopefully we can focus on all the great things that are going on and keep growing the game.”

What I don’t understand about the guys in this forum, who I respect a lot, who are advocating blow up the team while they are 7 games over .500 is this; You didn’t trust the team and the people running it and know they caused this current roster mess, so what makes you think them becoming “sellers” is going to help anything when the same inept talent evaluators will be making these deals?

You seriously think Cashman acting as a GM of a club that is a seller will rebuild this roster? Really? Why?

With the current front office group the only thing they know how to do is overpay to get what we need. They’ve just stopped doing that when it comes to players who want more than 1 year.

And I’m sorry, but advocating a team that 7 games over .500 to become sellers is just sad to see as a fan. If you’re that down on the Yankees chances, you might want to take a break for awhile.

We’re a couple bats short of scoring more runs and winning more games with pitching that gets the job done better than most.

I despise Cashman and what Hal appear to be doing. Why in God’s name would you want to them to be behind the dissembling of this team is beyond me.

As long as those bats DO NOT interfere with their target of 189.

We can ‘wish’ all day long but – we have to accept the Yankees financial roadmap at this point.

We don’t have to like it – but I think we have to accept it.

Hopefully – Cashman can work some kind of deals while remaining with the FO guidelines.

(I would be very surprised if the FO ‘threw-out’ their financial plans)

    from previous thread:

Ron, my mistake the News Corporation did purchase a 49% stake in the Yes network for a reported 1.5 billion dollars with an option to purchase a total of 80% of the YES regional sports networks, as part of the deal the Yankees will receive increased rights revenue from the regional network. Beginning this year the Yankees will 85 million dollars from News Corp, which will increase to 350 million in the year 2042. Since the original article I read stated that News Corp had an option to purchase up to 80% of the YES network I am not exactly sure if the annual right’s payments are tied to the News Corporation’s increased ownership, but I would think it would.
It was reported that the Yankees sold their stake in Yes because they believed it had reached its peak value.
They also purchased a minority stake in the Manchester soccer club, because they believe that soccer has the potential for growth here in the US. As part of Manchester deal the Yankees are to establish an American soccer team based in NY starting in 2015. The team will play its first season in YS, but supposedly the Yankees are required to build a new stadium for the NY soccer team.
Moreover, the most recent information I can find, states that Steinbrenner owned 70% of the Yankees, and I would guess that this remains unchanged.
Reading what I have about current Yankee operations appears to cast some doubt on my contention that the team is up for sale, but selling their ownership stake in Yes, although it sounds like a great deal for the Yankees, still has me thinking that News Corp is interested in purchasing the team, especially given the fact that when the Padres were sold for 800 million 25% of that price was for the purchase of the Padres regional sports network. Also, the venture into soccer sounds more like something that News Corp would pursue.

Gonna be difficult which is why I don’t understand why they didn’t take a shot with Manny. Would have been on a short leash. First time he stepped out of line, cut him. But they didn’t even look at him

    G. Love

    Your logic cuts both ways.

You want to inept talent elevators to add “now” bats; some of us want them to add “later” bats.

We’re both at the mercy of poor decision-makers.

It’s all about finding the quickest way to become great again. I think that is by selling.

  7. bruceb July 16th, 2013 at 11:53 am

    G. Love

Much as I always respect your views, you seem to be contradicting yourself in your latest post. On the one hand, you don’t trust Cashman to rebuild the team. On the other, you seem to think he is capable of acquiring “a couple of bats” that will turn the fortunes of this team around. As Wave points out, you don’t say how?

  8. Warning Track Power July 16th, 2013 at 11:56 am

Regarding ARod and skipping the game last night.
Has me said why he failed to show up for that game? I have read 2 separate articles about
this subjects and neither had details why he missed the game.
    I’m just curious.
Nice to see him hit a HR last night. This might be a sign of things to come. This is the week I am looking for results at the plate.

  9. Mike in Harrisburg July 16th, 2013 at 11:57 am

The question is whether it is more costly to mortgage the future for the sake of the present, or vice versa. Based on my previous post I think there’s a fairly clear answer given how the league has shaken out thus far.

  10. Tackelberry July 16th, 2013 at 11:57 am

2 Cuban pitchers cleared for Free agency. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, whom we already hearda bout, and another named Dalier Hinojosa, a 27 year old righty with a fastball in the low to mid nineties

  11. JimK July 16th, 2013 at 11:58 am

As far as making any major deals by the trade deadline, based on the additional WC their trading partners are limited to most 10 teams.

  12. Shame Spencer July 16th, 2013 at 11:59 am

Yeah what Rich and bruce said. FWIW, I agree with GLove that we shouldn’t blow up the team but I mostly say that because the parts we’d like to blow up we simply can’t.

We’re locked into all the wrong players at all the wrong prices.

The only thing I may have ever been right about was exploring the option to trade Tex. It will be the torch I carry on LoHud forever! A beacon in the darkness!!

You seriously think Cashman acting as a GM of a club that is a seller will rebuild this roster? Really? Why?”

hello G Love…..well here is the thing. In order to “blow the team up and sell” the Yankees would have to shift away from their current MO…..which is to basically play year to year and patch holes with old guys on 1 year contracts etc…..if they blew it up without changing then no it wouldn’t work.

I don’t know that Cashman would be a sucessful “seller” but he’s never really done it so I can’t say that he couldn’t…..as I’ve said before I think the Yanks are where they are for a lot of reasons and they aren’t all because of talent evaluation.

the truth is though that the status quo isn’t getting them out of this mess if they won’t spend money……adding a rental bat or 2 or whatever this year isn’t fixing the problem….it’s kicking the can down the road another year likely after another disappointing finish to the season.

Lets say the Yankees buy a bat (a Michael Young) the deadline and Jeter and Arod and Granderson come back and produce and they sneak into a playoff spot…..where they promptly get hammered and sent to the golf courses……would that be satisfying? Especailly given the fact that a year from now we would be in the exact same place most likely wondering how the heck do we fix this thing?

  14. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:02 pm

again I’d rather be bad with a direction than mediocre and spinning my wheels……mediocre in sports is a terrible place to be.

  15. Tackelberry July 16th, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Apparently, Yanks have some serious interest in Cuban FA pitcher Dalier HInojosa

    http://riveraveblues.com/2013/.....osa-90948/

  16. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:05 pm

selling in a way should be easier than buying…..you’re not giving up long term assets and you get to sit back and let teams bid on your guys instead of the other way around. you don’t have to worry about overpaying etc…..Cashman could take his “the prices make me want to cry” thing and turn it around and wait out the absolute highest bid……

I guess my point is they need to do something to get out of this……either they are going to have to spend money or they are gonna have to get creative and do some things they normally don’t do. Doing nothing isn’t going to fix it……

  17. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:06 pm

“Apparently, Yanks have some serious interest in Cuban FA pitcher Dalier HInojosa”

they should….it’s just a money only deal and he’s not subject to the new rules.

  20. Rich in NJ July 16th, 2013 at 12:10 pm

I read that they want a bat that is under their control for a couple of seasons for Hughes.

I am not sure that they aren’t merely posturing or that they could actually get one that is worthwhile, but it’s the right position if they stick with it.

  21. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:10 pm

“No effect on the 189 ?”

I meant the international signing rules where you have pool money limits…..whether he’d affect 189 or not would be determined by if he signed a big league contract or not…..if he’s after a big league deal then the Yanks probably won’t sign him.

  22. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:12 pm

“I am not sure that they aren’t merely posturing or that they could actually get one that is worthwhile, but it’s the right position if they stick with it.”

I thought the Selig\Letterman exchange last night was Very interesting. If I’m Hal, once MLB lowers the boom, whether it’s 50 games, 100 games, lifetime ban, whatever, I tell A-Rod he is Immediately suspended from future participation and or contact with anything associated with the New York Yankees, pending his appeal. It is Not unusual for companies or sports franchises to terminate or suspend employees Accused of crimes. The “innocent until proven guilty” clap-trap is just that. The Yankees should Immediately distance themselves from A-Rod. Maybe he wins his appeal and the Yanks are forced to pay him back pay, so what? After the MLB decision is handed down, the Yankees should Immediately isolate A-Rod, and either wait for a decision on his appeal, or for him to come to the Yankees with a settlement offer.

The CBA prohibits that, and he isn’t accused of a crime in any actionable sense.

  37. G. Love July 16th, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Cashman is a good evaluator when it comes to buying for the most part. He gets the most credit for the Swisher trade, but when you look at that trade we only got him because he had a bad contract and bad relationship with Ozzie. That wasn’t exactly a talent for talent deal. It was a salary dump at the time.

I don’t think him being a buyer for whatever premium bats pop up at the deadline is out of his realm of expertise.

Our system is not loaded with stars. I know some of you believe that if you just add water and miracle gro a new core will sprout up, but that’s not the case. Guys are not moving through the system the way star players do with a few exceptions. The exceptions should be held onto and the rest can be dealt.

If you told me we got Rios from Chicago and Kendry Morales from Seattle, I’d tell you right now we’re making the playoffs.

Rios is a salary dump. Morales is a rental. You don’t need to trade your top prospects for them.

Then find a catcher who can hit more than Romine and we’re ready to make a run in the 2nd half.

If Cuddyer hits the market, jump on him. He fits the roster issue we have and can play other spots.

The Red Sox gave up a marginal prospect for Thornton. Taking on salary dumps doesn’t hurt your development system. But they have to be willing to take on payroll past this year in order to pounce on the guys who are hitting the market early.

  38. DONNYBROOK July 16th, 2013 at 12:24 pm

I would look at Morneau to replace Overbay, and send Overbay on his way. Overbay’s defense is absolutely horrible at this point, and his bat departed a while back.

  39. MTU July 16th, 2013 at 12:25 pm

    Rich-

They are not going to trade Hughes for anything less than something better than the value of a supplemental round pick.

    That would make little sense.

They are going to want a near MLB-ready prospect or a ML player who is more than a rental.

Add Betances and maybe a few others and the return gets even better.

His trading of Mike Lowell, for Jeff Weaver, for Kevin Brown, of AJack/IPK, and his thought process in the Montero trade (offense for pitching when he should have been adding offense to an aging team) were all bad moves, imo.

exactly….so how do you fix that quickly? Only real way is to firesell……I know that’s not fun but unless you think this team really has a chance at a world series then it’s probably wants best for the organization.

A lot depends on what Hal actually does with the budget…..they could spend their way out or at least enough to buy some time for the farm system to develop more…..but if he’s dead set on getting under the cap then the Yankees are years away from being good again IMO unless they sell some current assets for more young players.

I’m not prepared to wait 3 or 4 years for them to be good again just so the 2013 team can have a 5% chance of winning a title instead of a 1 % chance.

In regard to Bud and the interview, I continue to see Bud as the “cat that swallowed the canary”. Bud has just about everything lined out, and is ready to lower the boom. MLB is gonna hem the Biogenesis Group in, just like Bart Giamatti did with Pete Rose. Every I will be dotted, every T crossed. A-Rod, Braun, etc are gonna have nowhere to go, (other than a fruitless appeal), and like Watergate, the coverup\obstruction they have engaged in, will be Far more damaging than the actual crime they have committed.

  55. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:36 pm

I don’t want to be sitting here a year from now exactly where we are now (or worse)…..with my only consolation prize being that we fought hard and grabbed a wild card spot in 2013…..only to get embarrassed again by the Tigers or whoever else. The goal of the Yankees shouldn’t be mediocrity…..or even backing their way into a playoff spot……it should be to set up a team that serioulsly can contend for champhionships every season. We used to be that……I think that time is gone for this group so they need to be thinking about how to open up a new window.

“Really? As a rental to a contender? Then why are all the fans here so anxious to trade him? I don’t think he’ll bring that much.”

    1) because he’s been underappreciated by Yankee fans for years.

reason #2 is the most important one……they can spare him…..so unless he signs a team friendly extension in like the next day or two they should trade him.

  58. G. Love July 16th, 2013 at 12:40 pm

    Rich,

The deals you brought up are Cashman’s “talent for talent” deals. He doesn’t do well with those.

Those are different than straight out salary dumps and trading for a rental.

I don’t fault Cashman for trading Melancon for Fat Elvis. It’s taken Melancon how many years to be this good and he only seems to do well in small market NL situations.

He can handle trades for rental and salary dumps.

If he’s doing a talent for talent deal like Grandy, Weaver, etc. then we’re in trouble.

  59. Wave Your Hat July 16th, 2013 at 12:41 pm

“so unless he signs a team friendly extension in like the next day or two they should trade him.”

I’m not opposed to trading him. I just think he’ll bring less than you hope.

  60. Rich in NJ July 16th, 2013 at 12:41 pm

As long as they are such a pitching-reliant team and believe that pitching is the holy grail, they could just keep Hughes and increase the dimensions of YS next year…

Rich in NJ July 16th, 2013 at 12:28 pm

“Cashman is a good evaluator when it comes to buying for the most part. He gets the most credit for the Swisher trade, but when you look at that trade we only got him because he had a bad contract and bad relationship with Ozzie. That wasn’t exactly a talent for talent deal. It was a salary dump at the time.”

His trading of Mike Lowell, for Jeff Weaver, for Kevin Brown, of AJack/IPK, and his thought process in the Montero trade (offense for pitching when he should have been adding offense to an aging team) were all bad moves, imo.

He is good when he is taking back big contracts. That is pretty much it.
    ——————————

I’m not the biggest supporter of Cashman right now but I don’t think those examples you gave were exactly fair:

Lowell for Yarnell wasn’t a bad trade. The Yankees had what they thought was a better 3b option behind Lowell (Drew Henson) and Ed Yarnell was a highly touted pitching prospect (a key part of the Mike Piazza to the Mets deal)

Jeff Weaver was a very well regarded young, hard throwing right hander whereas Ted Lilly was a guy who had frustrated the Yankees by nibbling all the time. No one could have anticipated that Weaver would crumble in New York.

Kevin Brown was coming off of some very strong years for the Dodgers. The Yankees had lost Roger, Boomer and Andy and wanted a veteran they could put with Mussina and Javy (another good idea that went bad) and all it cost them was a guy who stunk (Weaver)

I didn’t love giving up Austin Jackson for Granderson because they are very similar players but Granderson had more power to his game to make up for the strikeouts where as Jackson was a big strike out small power guy and Kennedy didn’t really impress and still hasn’t.

The Montero trade was trying to cash in on a guy you had major questions about before other people realized you had major questions about him.

Cashman has made trades and signed players that haven’t worked out – no question about it. But with the exception of a couple (Tony Womak, Jaret Wright, Wily Mo Pena for Drew Henson, Zach McAllister for Austin Kearns) I’m not sure there are many that, at the time, stuck out as being bad deals.

  62. DONNYBROOK July 16th, 2013 at 12:42 pm

There is NO Dominating AL team. The Yankees should be making a run at winning Now. I’m not saying mortgage the future, but there are rental players available like Morneau, Kubel, Schierholtz, etc, that can make the difference, minus a dominating AL team to conquer. Throwing in the towel at this point, 5 games back in the loss column to the best team in the AL is cowardly.

  65. G. Love July 16th, 2013 at 12:46 pm

    blake,

The Yankees have never set up a team by selling stars for other teams prospects. That doesn’t speed up the timetable.

Signing key free agents (especially international), keeping your future stars and trading builds this.

If they make the playoffs this year, who is to say they won’t make it next year?

I see both the long term view and the short and life is short. I’d rather see them trade some chum from the roster to go for it this season then see them grab A and AA ball types who guarantee us nothing in the coming years.

Right now, despite the tone in here, this is a winning team. They’re winning more than they are losing. They have one fatal flaw. They can’t hit. If they fix that, I don’t see anyone, the Tigers included, standing in the way as the Tigers pitchers are starting to hit that overuse matrix and their bullpen is nothing.

We beat the Orioles at home recently with the worst offense we’ve had in 20 years. Imagine if we improve that.

What I don’t believe however is that the answer is already in the locker room or on the DL. The answers, are on other rosters as they were in the off season.

Where is the game being played? Because on the road Hughes has been a 3.3 era guy…..the question is whether or not some team thinks he’s closer to that guy if you get him out of YS

  68. Rich in NJ July 16th, 2013 at 12:47 pm

    G. Love

But the players you mention are impending free agents, so Cashman doesn’t have the nuclear checkbook to use. That reduces these proposed trades to the talent for talent types that he is so bad at.

And what would he give up? They can’t afford to give up prospects, they want more than a salary dump for Hughes, and they have devalued Joba to the point of almost worthlessness.

As for Melancon, as I said yesterday, I view the trade as bad one because it is part of a pattern of not maxing out their assets, and to the contrary, almost always selling low

    Chip

Cashman admits that the Lowell trade was a really bad. IMO, it was bad because they again banked on the aging vet, Brosius, instead of having the courage and vision to rely on young upside.

Lilly was a very effective pitcher in NY, and Weaver was and remained a two-pitch pitcher.

The Dodgers have an extreme pitcher park and Brown had pre-existing back issues.

Granderson had already started to decline, and continued to do so except for his out of context 2011.

AJack was the type of young cost-controlled player that affords payroll flexiiblity to secure other assets. And who you care about K’s? You must hate Grandy.

And btw AJack is so much better than Grandy in CF it’s beyond dispute.

IPK has had a better career than Joba or Hughes, and let’s not forget that the Tigers got Scherzer int he deal.

    These are bad deals.

  77. G. Love July 16th, 2013 at 12:54 pm

    Rich,

They can afford to give up prospects. They have more OF prospects than OF spots. They have more SP prospects than holes in the rotation. Not all of those guys are making it here.

You keep Ramirez, DePaula and Gary Sanchez and deal some of the rest. If teams want those 3, they have to give up a young cost controlled star.

Bryce Harper isn’t languishing in our system right now. Neither is Mike Trout. The AA OF’ers struggling a bit this year shows the timetable and projections on some of them might have been off. You can deal one or two of them or deal some pitching and get back players.

I mean, yeah, Cashman has to work hard and stop producing his daily soundbite, but I don’t think we have Derek Jeter and Mo sitting in our system right now.

They need to know who to hold onto and who they can thin out the ranks for. They actually used to be good at that once upon a time knowing to deal guys like Milton, Claussen, Henson, etc…when their value was high.

  78. Rich in NJ July 16th, 2013 at 12:56 pm

    G. Love

If they are getting Headley, fine, but for a few month rental, I think it would be a mistake because they haven’t yet been able to identify, at least as a result of performance, who are the keepers and who are excess. Now, for Headley, you take a risk.

  79. blake July 16th, 2013 at 12:58 pm

If nothing happens at the deadline, I’ll be there with you. But I don’t see why they wouldn’t try to improve this lineup when they have the pitching to take them all the way.

Especially, with the way Nova has been stepping up. He keeps pitching like this and he’s passed Hughes and just about everybody except Kuroda.

That’s exciting me. We just need bats. We need to move on from Hafner and we need a 3b who can hit and one more solid OF bat who is RH.

I’m telling you, add Rios and Morales to this group and get out of the way.

  82. MTU July 16th, 2013 at 1:00 pm

If you’re hoping the Yankees become serious sellers then you have to be hoping that the brutal schedule after the ASB buries them badly.

I am not going to wish for that no matter what.

I hope they can at least tread water and that they strengthen some or all of their weaknesses by the TD and they can at least make the playoffs as a WC.

I am prepared for the Yankees to be less than we accustomed to until 2015 when the can start spending more freely again.

Maybe not a top prospect, but the next tier one.
Obviously you are not getting a great ml player,or even an elite prospect, but if I can get maybe a segura, before he blew up with the brewers,i’m fine with that.

It is about making the right decisions, one after another, not what is,or isn’t available with this trading deadline,or what we think will,or won’t work. For an example;people think we need a trout, and harper to get back into 1st place, and we know that isn’t happening,so some of us lose hope, when all it would take is an arod ops’ing at .800,a jeter ops’ing at .740,granderson back, and maybe a bat like a rios, etc.
One step at a time, and smart decision making.
Arod’s contract is a disaster, and signing cano to a 7/161 contract would be another bad decision.
I saw the arod disaster coming when he was hitting 50 hr a year, ops’ing at almost 1.000

Speaking of talent for talent deals, how good does Dombrowski look for the Grandy deal? Ian Kennedy is struggling with the DBacks. Grandy put up some good numbers for the Yanks and is a good guy, but he hasn’t been the Bernie Williams-type the fans were hoping for.

The Tigers? They have a young starter in Max Scherzer who is starting the All-Star game and he game’s best defensive center fielder, Austin Jackson, who consistently hits over .300. They even got Phil Coke, who was a useful part for the past three years.

    Advantage: Dombrowski

    blake,

I’m skeptical, but I’m not hopeless at this point.

The Stadium is seeing less revenue. They’ve already played the majority of their home games this year.

If any of this is about money/revenue for this season, they need to do something to get people back to the park because relying on Jeter & Arod looks silly right now. One might get hurt each time he busts it down the line and the other might get banned from baseball.

The tea leaves are telling them they need to move on from relying on those guys and if they want to make the Yankees a priority in NY they will make some moves.

I look at this way – get 2 bats, try Musty out when he’s healthy at 3b, promote Murphy behind the dish or get a better hitting backup and we should make the post season.

We’ve had lineups that should not lose in the post season that look like this lineup does in the regular season so I’m not worried about if we hit in the post season. I just want to get there. If Nova holds up, he and Kuroda with CC and Andy will give us a good chance each night with our pen (especially minus Joba).

There is some grit on this team. Guys like Ichiro, Overbay and dare I say Stewie seem to have that knack to get a big hit when we need it.

I’m not thrilled with the team and the thought process that went into it, but I’m a Yankee fan and we’re 7 games over at the break. We have to go for it.

This is the last time we’ll see Mo on the mound. If he gets to the playoffs and we put the game in his hands, we’ll win.

Falling short of that to sell players for prospects depresses me terribly.

    Blake-

Those are only a few examples.

There will be many other possibilities as the TD approaches and the market takes form.

Your buddy Morse is a rental. He might be relatively easy to obtain from the M’s.

They are not likely to re-sign him.

He can play some first along w Overbay and be a strong, power hitting DH.

Did you lose interest in him ?

The thing for me is, that while the Yanks are 7 games over .500 right now, I don’t think they are that good, or really even close to it. To me, that means they need to make some deals just to stay where they are. It will be too hard to do enough to actually land in the post-season.

That would be a bingo – unless of course you only care about whether or not the Yankees win and not what kind of seedy individuals are playing for the team and whether or not they are cheating others to win. Then of course you can’t wait to see him back.

I firmly believe this team will not succeed until he’s no longer a part of it because his cheating seems to reek bad karma everywhere.

  125. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 16th, 2013 at 1:40 pm

  134. Chip July 16th, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Here’s how I look at this team:

When all the injuries started piling up in Spring Training the Yankees first looked at their young players to see if they could step in (Melky Mesa, Corban Joseph, etc) they couldn’t and so the team went out and got guys they knew weren’t top level players, but were better than what they had at the time (Ben Francisco, Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay) with the hope that the hope that their pitching would at least keep them in it until players started coming back.

The replacements got off to a great start, Overbay, Hafner and Wells for a while carried the team. Then more injuries hit (Cervelli, Youk, Nunez) and now you’re playing third and fourth stringers. Then you have set backs (Granderson, Jeter, Tex, Youk) and now you’re taxing those replacements even more. It’s like a car that has the gas light on, you can only push it so far before you get to a point where the car just doesn’t have any more to give. That’s where we’re at with guys like Overbay.

On the other hand the injuries didn’t just hit the major league system. Brennan Boesch, Corban Joseph, Ronnier Mustellier are all hurt too. The guys who are healthy have already been pressed into service (David Adams, Zoilo Almonte, Austin Romine) with mixed results.

Cashman has tried to supplement by grabbing guys off the waiver wire (Nelson, Gonzalez, Cruz) all with the idea “I just need to use duct tape and chewing gum to keep this thing going until the regulars come back but now he’s at the point where he knows some guys aren’t coming back and so he still needs to augment the roster.

The great start that the team got off to bought him time to get to this point, but it also puts Brian in a tough spot. They have to leapfrog a lot of teams to make the playoffs, but it is doable. But at the same time, it’s also possible that the wheels come off even more and you can’t risk too much of your future on a very shaky present.

That’s why I suggested the four trades I did earlier.

Matt Davidson and Chris Owings are good future cogs that the team would be lucky to get for Hughes (I don’t think Towers would give up that much for him)

Navarro is having a very good season and would be an upgrade over Romine and Stewart but shouldn’t cost more than a Thomas Neal type of player to get.

Tabata is showing some bounce back from his bust status, is 24 and signed to a very friendly deal. The Pirates are looking to upgrade from Clint Barmes at SS and have no place for Tabata – I don’t know how much of an upgrade Eduardo Nunez is, but I think it’s a fair deal for both sides.

And Michael Young can fill in at 1st and 3rd, doesn’t block anyone in the future and shouldn’t cost more than Joba and a mid-level prospect in a salary dump if the Phillies want to go that route.

It’s hard for me to get excited about A-Rod when you know that the suspension is going to hit sometime. Him coming back and tearing the cover off the ball for 2 weeks (I personally don’t think he’s going to do that well but I hope he does) and then getting hit with the suspension would really sting.

There will be other options as well. Those won’t be the the only fish in the Sea.

  145. Tyler July 16th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

  146. Chip July 16th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

By the way – I have to say I love that Alex is still giving updates on his progress.

At this point if I’m him I would take an eff you approach to the Yankee front office. Alex hasn’t been a peach to deal with, he’s brought a lot on himself, but he’s also been treated like crap by this organization for a long time, whether it was Joe Torre throwing him under the bus in an interview with Verducci or Cashman ripping him in the press. At this point if I’m Alex I’m just saying “you know what guys screw you. You want me to go away, well I’m not. You want to tell people I’m retiring, well I’m not. I’m healthy…try getting an insurance settlement now boys.”

  147. Tyler July 16th, 2013 at 2:02 pm

    Shame-

Yeah I should have read more of the thread before commenting, haha. I said when this first broke that it’s going to be a huge mess. MLB definitely feels like they have to go all in on this one but I think they are really overstepping their authority with the 100 game double suspension for lying. The Union is going to hit hard at that.

  148. Tackelberry July 16th, 2013 at 2:03 pm

    Tyler:

Even if he gets suspended he will immediately appeal which means he gets to keep on playing. Any resolution would likely not come before the end of this season, so if the suspension is upheld, it would be next season

The minute it becomes a bidding war for Michael Young I walk away. There’s no reason to give up anything more than marginal guys for him.

The guy I would be intrigued to get is Logan Morrison. I understand the Marlins consider him (along with Mike Dunn, their closer and Stanton) to be the only four guys they don’t want to trade, but give me a kid at 25 with that kind of power…ooh baby.

  161. austinmac July 16th, 2013 at 2:17 pm

    Chip,

The trouble with the Yankee management is they don’t wait until the younger players develop. They bring in second class(at best)players like Cruz. Watch Adams get traded and hit .280.

On a separate note, I don’t get why the Biogensisis case would differ from the usual rules. I suppose it is because the CBA talks in terms of so many days for each failed test. Very interesting and potentially devastating to Arod.

  162. MTU July 16th, 2013 at 2:20 pm

Hopefully Jeter returns right after the ASB (fingers crossed).

A-rod is eligible after the 21st. He could start in the Rangers series ( if there are no other complications).

That’s 2 major guys almost right away.

A Navarro trade should be relative easy.

    That’s 3 pieces fairly quickly.

The Hughes deal might take more time. That has to be handled with finesse.

No idea when Grandy or Cervelli are slated to return.

  163. austinmac July 16th, 2013 at 2:21 pm

Arod never used drugs while wearing a Yankee uniform. I feel very confident he removed it completely before the injections.

  164. Joe from Long Island July 16th, 2013 at 2:22 pm

chip – you are way too inconsistent. your earlier post about the season so far, and rationale for certain trades, makes a lot more sense than your latest thing.

Alex hasn’t been a peach to deal with, he’s brought a lot on himself….

    really? you think so?

he’s brought this all on himself. he’s an adult. he has no one to blame but himself and his own decisions. the peds, the opt-out during the world series, the gossip stories. calling him a prima donna is an understatement.

he’s also been treated like crap by this organization….

yeah, $25M is so much chump change.

what torre did was pretty poor, agreed; i know he didn’t care for alex, but you don’t do that stuff to anyone, let alone someone who’s head is as mucked up as his.

let’s face it, neither alex, nor the yankees, likes or trusts the other. at least, that’s how it seems to even casual observers. for each side, it’s all about the money. that’s what they’re fighting over, in one way or another.

i’d love alex to come back and tear the cover off the ball. i root for laundry (and a few individual ballplayers). i’d love to give people even more reason to hate the yankees. a ws championship should really drive them nuts.

what i’d really like to know was what was laid out to alex by mlb, over that 4 1/2 hours, that made him go awol friday night. what evidence did they lay out that had that kind of effect on him? probably more than just dr. quackenbush.

    Hello Trisha!

Don’t be so hard on Alex. Sure he has used PEDs before & probably even now but he never failed a PEDs test. Biogenesis aside, there are probably 50 to 60% PEDs users in MLB right now and most are running scott free. As you stated Ortiz is known to be a user & he is being lifted up as the Greatest DH of all time. Why? Because he is a RSux player. If ARod was a RSux player now (& he almost was) he would not be getting this type of focus or attention. Because in the eyes of RSux fans ARod scorned them he is hated beyond belief & has been tortured with their pens & vitrule. McGwire (Now a Coach) & Sosa are still almost reverred by MLB, yet Bonds who was far better than both of them is not. This is a witch hunt really in the form of Pete Rose type beat down. Braun had a positive test & the Commish feels especially vulnerable because it was his team’s player who beat the system & now has come back again via Biogenesis.

I truly don’t know what to think about these folks. The RSox teams that won the WS were known PED users & they don’t get much attention.

It is hard to undo anything. From my years in the sports world, I can attest to multiple people using steroids, Coke, drugs, pot, alcohol, stimulants, blood transfusions & other things to get an edge including out right cheating. (Tape recorders, stealing signs, freezing baseballs, sloping the infield edges, tall grass, short grass, messing with the mounds, etc. (Spitballs, vaseline, true cut fastballs with a file, etc.)

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players.
