TIME/TV: 8:05 p.m., MY9 and MLB Network
WEATHER: Been sunny all day, which means it’s hot down here in Texas.
UMPIRES: HP Kerwin Danley, 1B Lance Barksdale, 2B Vic Carapazza, 3B Wally Bell
EXTRA CREDIT: The Yankees have not recorded an extra-base hit in their past two games. They’ve had back-to-back games like that only five other times since 2001, and four of those are this season.
NOT A GOOD SIGN: The Yankees have not scored in their last 20 innings against Texas and have been shut out in each of their last two meetings, marking just the second time in the history of these two teams that the Yankees have been shut out in consecutive games by the Rangers (last time was in 1984).
ZEROES: The Yankees are 5-2 in games immediately following a shutout loss this season, and have gone 31-11 in such games since 2008 when Joe Girardi took over as manager. The Yankees have been shut out eight times this season, tied with five other seasons for their second-most times being shut out since 1992 (also eight in 2011, ‘10, ‘08, ‘07 and 1992), trailing only 1997, when they were shut out nine times.
UPDATE, 8:43 p.m.: Of all people to snap the extra-base hit drought, it’s Melky Mesa with a double.
UPDATE, 8:44 p.m.: And now Romine with an RBI double!
UPDATE, 8:49 p.m.: It’s an offensive explosion! Four straight hits. Two runs. Still not outs in the third.
UPDATE, 9:22 p.m.: Amazing what can happen when a team gets some extra-base hits. Another double in the fourth inning has set the stage for another Yankees run and a 3-0 lead.
UPDATE, 9:44 p.m.: This is only Hughes’ second start with more than two walks this season, but he’s made it work through five scoreless innings. He’s thrown 70 pitches and has allowed just two hits. Both hits were leadoff doubles that Hughes stranded.
UPDATE, 10:01 p.m.: After a couple of hits, two runs and a costly error, the Yankees are going to Boone Logan for the final out here in the sixth. He’s in to face Mitch Moreland with a runner at first and the Yankees ahead 3-2.
UPDATE, 10:03 p.m.: Ooof! Moreland takes Logan deep for a two-run homer and a one-run Rangers lead. Three runs were charged to Hughes, all unearned.
