Could Michael Young be on the move?

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 30, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Jeff Passan is reporting that the Phillies have decided to promote third base prospect Cody Asche to the big leagues, fueling speculation that Michael Young could be on the move.

A source told me this afternoon that I shouldn’t bank on Young being traded. It’s certainly possible, but there are also internal reasons for the Asche promotion. Joel Sherman writes that, if Young is being traded, it’s not to the Yankees.

It’s becoming harder and harder to count on Alex Rodriguez giving the Yankees any sort of boost this season. Would the Yankees go with some combination of Jayson Nix, Brent Lillibridge, David Adams and maybe Eduardo Nunez at third base for the rest of the season?

UPDATE, 1:40 p.m.: I was told the Yankees showed legitimate interest in Young, but Ken Rosenthal says Young will accept a trade only back to the Rangers.

Well thank God Cashman swooped in at the last minute and swiped Teixeira from the Red Sox. And good thing he grabbed Arod before he went there too for Manny Ramirez.

    ________

It’s funny how our 2 worst contracts were almost Red Sox until we barged in and Cliff Lee was nearly a Yankee and now will be a Red Sox.

  2. Jesus Bustero July 30th, 2013 at 1:27 pm

The Yankees need to try to get Sandoval or Prado.

Young is probably going to the Red Sox.

Boston has some nice talent on the farm don’t get me wrong but this seems kind of ridiculous. Boegarts is awesome and I think Middlebrooks will bounce back. I don’t think Bradley becomes anything more than an average major leaguer. Ranuado has had a good year but nothing impressed me about him in the futures game. Plus, he was horrible last year. Good system but Philly’s must suck.

  4. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 1:30 pm

    @Ken_Rosenthal

That last tweet should read, #Phillies’ Michael Young only WILL approve trade to #Rangers. Left out a word. Again: Full no-trade clause.

#Padres feeling better about future offense, not moving Quentin or Headley in this mkt, and more doubtful even rlvrs Gregerson/Thatcher move

    No, I think it’s right.

    Philly’s system is horrendous.

  8. blake July 30th, 2013 at 1:38 pm

There is a reason the Padres suck

  9. Mike Ri July 30th, 2013 at 1:40 pm

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that Michael Young will only approve a trade to the Rangers.
Young has a full-no trade clause, so he can control his destiny. The Red Sox and Yankees are among the teams reportedly interested in the 36-year-old, but he’s apparently only willing to consider a return to Texas. The Phillies are planning to call up prospect third baseman Cody Asche, so it appears that there will be some resolution in the next 24 hours or so.

  10. J. Alfred Prufrock July 30th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

Good. I don’t want to add another bat pushing 40.

  11. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 1:44 pm

The Padres suck because they hired a Red Sox assistant GM who solely went there to trade Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox.

Then, that GM followed his butt buddy Theo to the Cubs.

  12. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2013 at 1:45 pm

You guys are eyeballin, (Young, Panda) the Wrong corner. Morneau batting .254 Lifetime vs lefties. I understand wanting a (RH) Stick, but you go for what you can afford vs what is available at that price. Easy choice.

  13. Chip July 30th, 2013 at 1:45 pm

If the Yankees can’t get Young that’s fine. He’s a nice player and would be an upgrade but not sure what a difference maker he would be.

  14. ac1 July 30th, 2013 at 1:48 pm

I agree with a poster earlier that short of a big RH 3b, Morneau would be a nice addition. Again, Minny would no doubt want something nice in return…..

AND dont forget that same GM traded the centerpiece of the Sox/Padres trade to the Cubs then he met back up with Theo in Chicago. I cannot believe this was never investigated by MLB.

  18. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Young would definitely be an upgrade over Lillibridge and Nix. But I can’t see giving up a good prospect for a rental. The Sox will probably get him for nothing but that usually happens with them.

I think if the Red Sox hold onto all the prospects and don’t make a move, that’s a very telling level of patience within their front office.

A lot can change in a day. Plus the Phillies already called up another 3rd basemen for today’s game so Young is going somewhere. I can’t see Texas trading for him after everything that happened last year when he left.

Amazing how many here are still advocating for older fatter players?

How many posts were there about “let’s give the kids a chance”, where’s Musty, Adams etc.?

Cashman who is resisting trading for more scrap in some desperate hope of making the playoffs thus far is to be complimented for his patience and understanding that neither Rome nor the Yankees can be rebuilt in a season!

We can always fire him later if he fouls up again! ;)

I agree. I also think that if they get away with getting Lee without giving up either Boegarts or Barnes, it’s highway robbery, and Cherrington should be viewed as a player in the game for sure. That’ll be two huge deals under his short tenure.

  37. Jerkface July 30th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Just a point of fact, the 12 million is only for benefits. You then have to cover the 40 man outside of that 12 million.

Where are you seeing that A-rod would simply deduct 25 million, rather than have the entire 27.5 amount voided? Please cite your sources, thanks.

I’m about as fast to render a verdict against Cashman as anyone but I won’t judge his performance until the trade deadline passes.

  47. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2013 at 2:07 pm

AH, that’s it. Looking at numbers instead of Actual\Current performance on the field. Overbay put decent number the first couple months, since then he has been falling to Earth. Put it this way, game on the line tonight, who do you want batting? Morneau or Overbay? EASY CHOICE.

  48. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 2:12 pm

I could deal with Overbay at 1st for the rest of the year. But they definitely have to find someone to play 3rd base. The manager’s pet will be back tonight but his defense isn’t good enough to play there everyday. I would just stick with Lillibridge for now but they will never do that.

    Option A

    82 OPS+
    basestealer
    ~125 M through 2022
    Plus 3 top prospects

    Option B

    81 OPS+
    gold glover/elite defender

    __________

I say keep the 125 M, keep the 3 top prospects and keep Eduardo Nunez.

See Blake, this is how much you and WAR inflate value on defense. You’d be willing to destroy the farm for it and get hit with a 125 M bill.

I don’t care what the Yankees see in Nunez.

He gives you Andrus offense, Andrus base stealing ability and 125 M plus 3 top prospects in place of elite defense.

  91. Warning Track Power July 30th, 2013 at 2:53 pm

Just read this on the ESPN Yankees Blog regarding ARod and the MLB situation. I am very, very upset and want to have a personal chat with Bud Selig myself:

If the latest reports are true, it indicates a doggedness, even a vindictiveness, on the part of the commissioner that seems to indicate he wants to prevent Rodriguez from playing big league baseball again. It seems a curious stance from a man who turned a blind eye as two obvious PED users, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, rescued his strike-damaged game with a phony home run chase in 1998.

But memory is selective and history is written by the winners, and right now, Bud Selig seems to be winning this sordid game of chicken.

  92. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 2:53 pm

He definitely was productive in the regular season. So he probably would have helped us qualify for the postseason.

But he disappears in the postseason because he’s a hyena

Oddly enough, we are within a 3 game sweep of the Orioles of the 2nd wildcard spot.
Because of that, the Yankees will never admit defeat.
Especially with the possible lineup we can throw out there once Granderson returns (and hopefully either a 3b or 1b).

  100. blake July 30th, 2013 at 3:01 pm

“See Blake, this is how much you and WAR inflate value on defense. You’d be willing to destroy the farm for it and get hit with a 125 M bill.”

well first defense at SS is very important and you’re talking about the difference between a guy that can barely play the position vs an elite level guy…..also aside from this year Andrus has been consistently a .280 BA and .340-.350 OBP guy who was trending up until this season. He’s only 24 years old still……he’s a lot better than Nunie and he’s younger too.

This is a time where the Yankees would need to ask themselves who they are……can they afford to risk a little bit to possibly solve SS for the next decade? I’d argue yes they should if they can……this year is an outlier for Elvis….not the other way around.

  104. Giuseppe Franco July 30th, 2013 at 3:04 pm

    C R 9 doesn’t like to see anyone happy.

Swisher was absolutely right about the fans. His mistake was saying it to the media.

Fans who boo their own players are idiots. But some Yankee fans see that kind of juvenile behavior as some kind of lame badge of honor.

But, in reality, fans who act that way (like the way they allegedly treated Cliff Lee’s wife) make all Yankee fans look like jackasses.

  105. Tackelberry July 30th, 2013 at 3:05 pm

If you’re the Yanks, which prospects would absolutely be off the table in any deal? I’d say DePaula, Heathcott, and Sanchez.

Dodgers have been calling on Cliff Lee for a month now and are starting to press Phillies

  107. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 3:06 pm

    Um, that’s not true.

    First, I don’t boo players.

Second, I love seeing people and players happy. My best friends had a child a year ago after 4 miscarriages, and nothing makes me happier.

I love seeing Mariano and Jeter and people that IMO deserve to be happy, be happy.

But I dont like seeing a hyena/clown/buffoon that doesnt show up in the playoffs happy.

  108. jskwrite July 30th, 2013 at 3:07 pm

My 2 cents – Yanks don’t make a trade the next couple days. So what you see (+ Granderson!) is what you get. Third base is an ugly hole, which you could get away with if you were stronger in other positions (including catcher) or your DH was any good (that’s improved with Hafner out and Soriano and Jeter here).

Is Youk rehabbing? or is he just eating?

  109. RS July 30th, 2013 at 3:08 pm

I don’t get why fans have to be bitter about Nick Swisher. He was traded here (we gave up nothing in the deal), had a very reasonable salary, and put up numbers. He may have had a couple bad postseasons, but he was only supposed to be a complementary player and we still won 1 championship during his tenure. I’m glad the Yankees parted ways when they did (although I wish they’d had a better plan for replacing his production) but I have no ill feelings towards his time as a Yankee.

  110. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 3:08 pm

I should expand. I dont boo players, I curse the referees, wish them dead, get warned by stadium personnel, then sometimes get escorted out of the stadiums.

  114. Jesus Bustero July 30th, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Well hopefully the Dodgers offer Joc Pederson for him. A Joc Pederson package trumps a Middlebrooks package.

  115. RS July 30th, 2013 at 3:16 pm

“If you’re the Yanks, which prospects would absolutely be off the table in any deal? I’d say DePaula, Heathcott, and Sanchez.”

Truthfully, I don’t see any of the Yankees prospects as being completely off the table. None of these guys are can’t miss, bonafide major leaguers, probable future all-stars like Will Myers (and even he was traded, albeit in a dumb move IMO).

There are guys who I would refuse to include for a rental player. I would not give up Sanchez, DePaula, Williams, or Austin for someone who has less than 3 years of control. But if a player like Stanton was being offered, I think you have to make all of these prospects available. It’s been a long, long time since the Yankees turned any of their highly ranked prospects into a star player so the odds are sadly against them.

  116. Warning Track Power July 30th, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Only guy on here that irks me is Nick. Mainly because he’s inferior. Hates the Lakers, hates Manchester United, probably hates the Heat because of the 90s Knicks-Heat battles that the Knicks usually came out victorious, and wouldnt be shocked if he hates Duke. He’s got the inferiority complex, when as a fan of the New York Yankees, the greatest organization in history, you should appreciate the greatness of others (that dont have their greatness gifted to them by referees/other teams).

I can understand UNC fans hating Duke, but I dont have any disdain for UNC. Only person in NCAA BB Ive hated is Bostonian Jim Calhoun, especially after lying about the Yankees asking him to throw out first pitch and him declining.

  165. JimK July 30th, 2013 at 3:54 pm

I think the Yankees will stick to their plan of attempting to reset the LT; 17.5 is much better than the 50% they have been paying. For the 2012 season the Yankees are the only team that paid the LT and the 18.9 million dollars they paid for the 2012 season could go a long way in reestablishing their minor league system. For the 2014 season the Yankees are on the hook for CC, Tex, and Arod, which totals approximately 73 Million. Add in Jeter’s 17 and the Y’s are up to 90 million, which does not give them too much room to maneuver.

  166. ManningRules July 30th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

    The Mariners basically did.

They sent him to the minors where they told him that his bat isn’t good enough to make up for his glove so he’s not a catcher any more. And he didn’t show enough bat before his injury to make him anything other than a “meh” DH and no one knows if he can even play 1b.

Let me rephrase then: Montero hasn’t hit at this level and showed such poor ability to hit that the Mariners sent him to AAA and determined that the hit tool would not be good enough to carry the glove.

Cashman traded a designated hitter for a guy who was (at the time) profiled as a top of the rotation starter. Assuming Pineda gets back to that level then Montero would have to be as great a designated hitter as Edgar Martinez or Frank Thomas to even make the trade even from the Mariners’ standpoint.

Once Pineda bounces into form, Jesus Montero will be merely a footnote . Over-rated folks, you know there’s a reason why Oakland’s Billy B. wanted a tom more than Montero when Cashman came calling about Gio. As a hitter, maybe not. As a catcher – that ship has sailed. Assuming his hit tool comes around he still has value, but not nearly as much as he did as a catcher. If Pineda is the pitcher the Yankees thought they were getting, then it’s not even close in terms of value.

Montero has to fulfill his advance billing, that was a universal consensus, to become an elite hitter with power. You have to consider not just hitting for average and power, but what kind of damage he could have done in the Stadium. Right now, he could be crushing to RCF and killing LHP, the Yanks’ bugaboo.

Pineda, at the end of the day, will still be a RHP flyball-prone power arm. He may be very good for us, sure hope so, but he’s going to get burned by the park and if we don’t have any bats to redeem our ballpark’s lack of forgiveness to RH power arms, he’ll labor in vain.

Not to belabor this deadend discussion again, but the Yankees are lamenting their lack of a RHB against lefty pitching, and Montero has a 138 OPS+ vs. LHP; there is no way around that. He is only 23 and everyone still expects Montero to hit, and not be a platoon player. However, if you don’t want to look at the numbers, then you also can’t take a small sample size with Pineda (half a season of ace-like numbers) and act as if that is the player he is, just the player you hope he can be. If you are going to quote Pineda’s half a season, then you need to quote Montero’s mIlb body of work as well as his hit tool at NYS and vs. LHP. and as someone who has actually gone out of her way to see Pineda live, I can say I think he has a lot of potential, but he still has a long road back.

That is incorrect. The Mariners sent him down because they thought his catcher education was going to be too long of an experiment and since he isn’t going to be Johnny Bench, it would be wiser to relieve him of the beating catching can bestow upon a young hitter and instead settle for seeing if he could become Miguel Cabrera. He’s at 1B in Tacoma, coming off knee surgery, because they want to see if he can get to the level of bat they thought they were trading for.

I saw Pineda down in Trenton and he looked pretty good to me. The problem is, he’s a flyball pitcher and he hasn’t really developed a reliable third pitch. He looks like 2007 Joba with less velocity, when Joba was riding his fb/slider combo. I think Pineda can get outs, of course he can, he’s a talented young arm. But what made him special for half a season, any way, was his velocity and his ability to command his fastball along with a wipeout slider. Let’s see how much velo he can reclaim, and whether or not his changeup actually makes it out onto the mound. Right now, he looks to me like a really good short reliever.

Because I am very clear on mine: Montero has tremendous bat speed (watching Myers turn on pitches live on Sunday made me realize all over again that we traded that kind of live power bat away), and a swing path that ultimately will bring him the kind of success he had in the minors and as a Yankee. That’s my prognostication.

Am I right about yours? He’s a bust for evermore?

  232. ManningRules July 30th, 2013 at 4:29 pm

    No, JAP.

I’m not saying that at all – my only point is that he isn’t hitting yet, and thus far, the hype hasn’t lived up.
In no way can I predict what’s going to happen to anyone.

Mick – I’m not sure why you would say that. I have a pretty even-keeled record on here. I’m not trolling anything. I’m sorry you don’t agree with my posts – by all means, feel free to scroll over them.

Hit and Run for Warning Track:

“It seems a curious stance from a man who turned a blind eye as two obvious PED users, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, rescued his strike-damaged game with a phony home run chase in 1998.”

Warning, Warning (Will Smith!) – I promised Wave I wouldn’t say anything more on this but you continue to refuse to see what’s going on. Don’t be blinded to hard-core reality. Step up and absorb this. It will help you. This is bare bones, but you’ll see how it fits together.

There is nothing curious about what is going on here and there is nothing curious about Selig’s stance. I invite you to connect the dots:

. BALCO took center stage in the early 2000s

    . Canseco writes Juiced

. Congress gets involved and “invites” Selig and Fehr to testify

. Selig and Fehr say they will report back to Congress with some kind of policy but miss deadline

. Selig presents 2005 MLB policy and declares it the end of steroids in baeball; Congress less than impressed and threatens to come up with stronger policy

. Game of Shadows is published

. Congress questions effectivenessy of MLB’s drug policy, so Selig appoints Mitchell to “investigate”.

. Mitchell Report published and Bud and Fehr again testfy

. Congress pushes for re-opening of labor agreement to make drug policy even stronger

. Fehr pushes back and says it won’t be reopened until 2011, when it’s due for renegotiation

. Bud promises Congress that all PED issues in baseball will be investigated .

So ya see, MLB still owns its antitrust exemption and Bud (reluctantly ?) plays the good boy to make sure they keep it.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  402. free local sex September 15th, 2014 at 5:51 pm

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Come on, man, I know it was my choice to read, but I just thought youd have something intriguing to talk about. All I hear is actually a couple of whining about something you can fix when you werent too busy trying to uncover attention.

An intriguing discussion is price comment. I feel that you should write extra on this topic, it may not be a taboo subject but generally individuals are not enough to speak on such topics. Towards the next. Cheers
