Greinke vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, YES Network and MLB Network

WEATHER: It’s L.A. Bright blue sky. Temperatures in the 70s. Beautiful.

UMPIRES: HP Bill Biller, 1B CB Bucknor, 2B Quinn Wolcott, 3B Dale Scott

MAYBE WITH A GREAT ROAD TRIP? Ichiro Suzuki has totaled 3,984 hits when combining his Major League total (2,706) and Pacific League total (1,278). He needs 16 more to reach the 4,000-hit plateau, reached only by Pete Rose (4,256) and Ty Cobb (4,191), when taking into account hits from the highest levels of baseball in the U.S. and Japan.

HE HITS TOO: Zack Greinke is hitting .394/.474/.455 this season.

ON THIS DATE: On July 30, 2011, the Yankees scored a franchise-high 12 first-inning runs in Game 2 of a doubleheader against Baltimore. They sent 16 men to the plate with 13 of them reaching base. All nine batters had at least one hit and one run, and the Yankees won 17-3.

UPDATE, 10:35 p.m.: Pettitte gives up a run in the first, Overbay gets it right back with a solo homer in the second.

UPDATE, 10:43 p.m.: That was an 0-2 pitch from Pettitte that Uribe just hit for a go-ahead homer. Not the Dodgers first hard-hit ball of the night.

UPDATE, 11:09 p.m.: Ichiro’s throw and Stewart’s tag have saved a run and gotten Pettitte out of the third inning, but he’s already allowed six hits, and a lot of those have been hit awfully hard. He’s at 51 pitches. How long do he go?

UPDATE, 11:16 p.m.: Double. Wild pitch. RBI grounder to short. That’s all it takes to tie this thing at 2. Helps getting some extra-base hits every now and then.

UPDATE, 11:55 p.m.: Well, I thought Pettitte might be in for a short night, but he’s just pitched through the sixth and it’s still 2-2. The Dodgers have seven hits, but Pettitte has kept them at bay.

austin, I’ve been thinking about your question and I honestly can’t answer it. I feel total ambivalence. I think that I’d have a scornful look on my face if Arod got a hit and a scornful look on my face if he Kd. I’d really have no preference. I fear if put to the wall, I’d go with a K just because he’s a cheater and I don’t want him cheating any other team the way he has the Yanks. I’m hoping I don’t have to find out the answer.

tbone, that’s why I put it in parentheses. Their games are always going to start earlier than ours, so that’s for tomorrow!

one of the benefits of living outside of the NY metro area and having MLBTV’s premium service.

Of course, living in the Tampa market, I get 18 Yankees-Rays games with the Rays announcers, Dewayne Stats and Brian Anderson. Listening to them is like nails on a chalkboard only dumber…

  21. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:18 pm

Yanks need Pettitte to be good from the 1st inning. Hopefully he is better tonight.

  22. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2013 at 10:19 pm

Praying Andy has his stuff back. We really can’t afford to have him and CC biting the dust, with Hughes sucking up their dust! Unless of course Nova can pitch three days in a row!

    :)

  23. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2013 at 10:19 pm

MG, when I lived in the city, I went to most of the home games, so I at least got relief from Kay… now I unfortunately go to less games (sigh) … Kay is worse than awful. How he keeps the Yankee job is beyond me.

  24. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2013 at 10:20 pm

Andy’s due for a good first inning.

  25. chicken_stanley July 30th, 2013 at 10:20 pm

    Nooooo to Callaspo

  26. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2013 at 10:21 pm

    Atta boy. One down.

  27. UnKnown July 30th, 2013 at 10:21 pm

Hey YF I saw you wondered if Price came out after the rain delay last night to pitch and actually he did, if you can believe that. Pitched to just one batter. Someone I saw told you he didn’t come back out. Weird move by Maddon.

    Go Yanks

  28. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:22 pm

  33. UnKnown July 30th, 2013 at 10:23 pm

BTW this would just be an awesome W.S. matchup. Just tremendous.

  34. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2013 at 10:23 pm

    All right; get the lefty.

  35. tucker July 30th, 2013 at 10:23 pm

Puig was too much of a risk … Can’t trust those international free agents …

  36. NYY_Girl_Penny July 30th, 2013 at 10:23 pm

if yankees brass actually knew how to do their job like they used to we’d have Puig..

  37. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Yep, good job. Except for Puig going to third. One more.

  38. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Who cares if the Sox get Peavy, he isn’t a difference major. That is much, much better than if they got Lee.

  39. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

I am just continually blown away by how good a fielder Ichiro still is. Really something.

  40. NYY_Girl_Penny July 30th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

    holy hanley.. some amazing stats.

I don’t care who they get. It’s not going to be enough.

  42. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:26 pm

    I would pitch around Ramirez

  43. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 10:26 pm

I decided I wanted to listen to an actual professional tonight, Vin Scully, instead of Kay.

Boy, what a mistake. What a loser old man Scully man. He said the Dodgers are looking to continue the “abuse of Andy Pettitte in the first inning.” What a toolbag. I wonder if he’s happy that the Red Sox abused them in that trade last year.

  45. ac1 July 30th, 2013 at 10:26 pm

About to get peavy. Not as concerned about peavy.

  47. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:27 pm

  48. mnmboys July 30th, 2013 at 10:27 pm

Pettitte got us in another early hole

  49. ac1 July 30th, 2013 at 10:27 pm

Pettitte cant keep the opponent off the board in the first.

  50. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2013 at 10:27 pm

  55. blake July 30th, 2013 at 10:29 pm

Too bad Hals budget wouldn’t let us buy low on Hanley

  56. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:29 pm

Pettitte and CC look like the same pitcher this year. They continue to miss over the plate way too often. It’s killing them.

  57. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

There is absolutely No reason to pitch to Hanley Ramirez with a runner at 3B, 2 out, and AJ Ellis on deck. DUMB

  58. NYY_Girl_Penny July 30th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

    andy seems very anxious.

  59. ac1 July 30th, 2013 at 10:31 pm

We should expect pettitte will give up 3-4 runs as he has in his last how many starts..
    We need at least 5.

  60. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 10:31 pm

Of course, the red sox were always going to get one of Peavy or Lee. There couldnt possibly be 2 teams to say no to them. Same crap.

When we had Lee in 2010, there was no backup plan available to us when the Mariners screwed us for that stiff Smoak.

YWN, AKA Cornball, may I address you by the acronym YWN in the future?

Were you on both the Feinsand and Dellapina blogs? The Feinsand blog was populated with a less serious crowd, do you remember Redfish?

Actually the hockey blog was even more fun with a bunch of true hockey fans with a definite sense of humor when Dellapina was the writer.

Unfortunately he left for a job with the NHL office and what followed was two disastrous writers necessitating a mild verbal thrashing on my part for their less than brilliant blogs.

Resulting in my banishment by a wet behind the ears recent college grad who should have been making coffee runs with Cashman!

Even Feinsand refused to intervene the wuss ……………. and just because I commented on his girth a few times!

PS, the hockey blog is in the dumper and Feinsand misses me!

Be well and post more often.

    ===============

YWN is fine LOL ! I was only on BTB which was a flippen riot with ur buddy ‘Fishytina’, what a hoot.

Feinsand and his girth ? He used to get ripped about going to ‘White Castle’ for the bonus sack of burgers (15 for the price of 12) I think he has gained 25 pounds since those days. Or is it cuz his Blog has been a ghost town ever since he chased everyone away with his mindless late posts.

    How is ‘Fishytina’ BTW ?

U know ‘DONNYBROOK’ on here is ‘CHIN MUSIC’ right ?

    What fun.

It the Sox traded Iglesias it’s obvious that they don’t think his hot hitting is going to continue. They basically sold high on him.

  100. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 10:39 pm

Jose Iglesias???? That’s it. So they spun the future Hall of Shamer Iglesias for a good SP.

Why cant we spin Nunez for something? If we tried to trade them Gardner (hypothetically a SS in this scenario) for Peavy, they’d laugh at us.

  103. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Iglesias ain’t that big a deal. He’s been declining for roughly a month. R\Sox knew when to dump that stock.

  107. Hankflorida July 30th, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Pressing needs two corner OF’s with good D and pop
Comsnse, it has always been the way championships from our perspective have been built, and that is why I could never figure out why the Yankee blueprint for this year had Suzuki playing with Gardener in center especially with loss of power numbers from last year. Sweeney Murti on the Fan today said that he did not think the Yankees were going to make a significant move as the Soriano deal was it; as you so aptly brought to my recollection a few threads ago, we are not getting the likes of Johnny Mize, a Johnny Hopp or a Enos Slaughter. In other words, “we have to dance with who we brung.”

  108. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Pettitte and Sabathia just aren’t the same pictures. What happened? It all seemed to be going so well for these guys for so long, and all of a sudden they can’t pitch a quality game? We can’t afford to have Nova be our #1 starter, he should be our #4.

  114. k lynn July 30th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Peavy, at some point in his career, used to be injury prone. Just have to hope he blows his arm out.

  115. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

    4. CC

Actually Hughes has also probably been better than CC.

  231. UnKnown July 30th, 2013 at 11:19 pm

Soriano was a great pick up. I wish we could’ve made the move sooner. I really hope we make one more move at least. Another hitter teamed up with Jeter, Soriano, Grandy, and crossing my fingers and toes for AL. We will be set. G- Love formula.

  232. NYY_Girl_Penny July 30th, 2013 at 11:19 pm

“Do you? He’s said himself that pitching doesn’t bother him as it’s not one on one…..”

I actually remember Greinke saying at one point that he would NOT want to go to the Yankees. As k lynn just told you, social anxiety is a tough disease, and having an entire stadium of rabid animals boo you would never be a prescription for someone feeling good about being thrown into that same situation again. At least the guy knows himself well enough to know what kind of atmosphere in which he can thrive.

  244. Mordot11 July 30th, 2013 at 11:22 pm

To jump in playing Jeter 5 in a row at short: I wonder if there is any consideration to playing him for a game at first against a lefty in one of the NL parks. It gets Nunez in a game, and reduces the amount of running Jeter will need to do. This assumes of course that Derek is reasonably competent at first.

Most likely 2 reasons. First he doesn’t think the Yanks are good enough to win this year. Also maybe he doesn’t want to get involved in the Arod mess. If Arod returns he would have to DH or play 1st. I don’t blame him.

Nix doesn’t have any timing. I don’t understand why the Yanks rush these guys back from the DL. I would rather have Lillibridge playing 3rd base everyday over him.

  350. DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2013 at 12:01 am

    Need a WP outta Greinke

  351. ac1 July 31st, 2013 at 12:01 am

  364. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 31st, 2013 at 12:04 am

Well I think I will call it a night, at least here, and power down.

I’m going to call a Yankee win.

And k lynn – this is for you in case Soriano continues to be productive tonight – :D

    Night all.

  373. DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2013 at 12:07 am

NOW, if the Yanks want to pull Pettitte during the next half inning, they will have to double switch. Pettitte leads off when we bat.

  374. joecembrale July 31st, 2013 at 12:07 am

    Clete Boyer-6?

  375. Pat M. July 31st, 2013 at 12:07 am

    # 6…..Vince Scully is a national treasure.

  376. Captain Clutch July 31st, 2013 at 12:07 am

Stewart is absolutely dreadful. It tells you how bad he is that they are pitching to him with the pitcher on deck. As long as Girardi is the manager of this team he will play his terrible guys over others.

  377. ac1 July 31st, 2013 at 12:07 am

Why have a bench if you dont ph a guy hitting 3-40 in the 7th inning of a tie game with actual hitters on the bench?

So on that Sox trade I would say Sox winners followed by ChiSox and then the Tigers as the losers.

Is that going to be the big move of the 2013 deadline?

    HOLY SMOKES SORI!!!! Yes Sir

  393. Captain Clutch July 31st, 2013 at 12:13 am

  455. Jesus Bustero July 31st, 2013 at 12:44 am

    G. Love,

I don’t see why the Angels would want a Hughes rental and 1.5 years of Gardner unless it’s to dump Hamilton’s salary. With Pujols and his foot it’s looking like they can’t safely build around those 2 players so the quicker they sell out of those contracts the better.

  456. DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2013 at 12:44 am

Maybe it’s Trumbo if LAA had planned to sign Hughes as a FA and can protect their 1st round pick by acquiring him in a trade + Gardner is involved according to LostNYY. There could also be a minor leaguer involved.

Trumbo would be great. I’d play him at 3B and stick Granderson in CF in place of Gardner.

  490. Captain Clutch July 31st, 2013 at 12:58 am

Kelly hasn’t looked good recently. But again a decent throw by Stewart and the runner is out at 2nd base. Also can’t expect the pitchers to be perfect every night.

  491. UnKnown July 31st, 2013 at 12:59 am

Cano still had a play on that SB. Wish he would’ve came up with the short hop. Freaking Stew…

    Had him beat

  493. jlyanks85 July 31st, 2013 at 12:59 am

Rays and sox forgot how to lose and Yankees continue to find ways to lose heartbreakers.

  495. jlyanks85 July 31st, 2013 at 1:04 am

The 2nd wildcard has bascially saved the Yankees season, because we probably would be sellers at this point being 8.5 games out of the division and will probably get worse because the rays just don’t lose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
