WEATHER: Not a great forecast with a chance of rain through most of the night.

UMPIRES: HP Hunter Wendelstedt, 1B Alan Porter, 2B Greg Gibson, 3B Jerry Layne

Outfielder Thomas Neal, who’s been up and down from Triple-A a few times this year, was claimed off waivers by the Cubs. Neal was designated for assignment when Curtis Granderson was activated.

This is Vernon Well’s first Major League start in the infield. He’d never played the infield in the big leagues until this season when the Yankees used him in short-handed situations at third base and second base.

BAD TIMING: About a month and a half ago, my office suggested that I skip a road trip. Which city was entirely up to me. It seemed like a great idea at the time to choose a random three-game series after the trade deadline in a non-A.L. East city with a last-place team. Of course I picked Chicago. Flights were booked. Plans were made. And now I’m wishing I had a do-over. Obviously there’s a ton of media in Chicago right now, and we have USA Today and The Associated Press essentially covering for us, so we’ll be able to provide the essentials of what’s happening with this circus. There will still be plenty of blog postings, I’m just not there to witness the madness first-hand.
