MG……I only Mantle and Mays in the early 60′s as their best years really ( especially The Mick’s ) were behind them. Willie had a great 1965 season of course. For me the best baseball player I ever saw was Ken Griffey Junior. He was the best. I get to hear The Hawk and Stone tonight. I like The Hawk at low doses

Holy crap! Chris Sale looks like a toothpick.

I’m a little older than you so had the chance to see The Mick in his prime-I was at OYS on Memorial Day, 1956 when he almost hit it out of the park.

I didn’t really see Mays play that much (grew up close to Ebbetts Field) but did see Jackie, Campy, Pee Wee, Newc, Gil Hodges, etc. I’m a Yankees fan because my dad grew up on the Grand Concourse and, of course, the Yankees were his team (and they beat the Dodgers most of the time in the WS).

Gil wound up opening a bowling alley after he retired, I bowled there occasionally and he would almost always be there behind the counter-I also bowled against his son, Gil Jr, a few times.

  7. RMS August 6th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Soriano hasn’t run that much in 10 years!

  8. RadioKev August 6th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

    Good base running by Soriano.

  9. Lillibridge is a mini Buchholz August 6th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

    well done, Alex.

    A-rod with the assist

  11. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:18 pm

the quintessential 2013 New York Yankees rally-walk, force out, stolen base, and a wild pitch scoring the runner from 2nd

    :)

  12. Mordot11 August 6th, 2013 at 8:19 pm

Arod gets an assist on the emphatic wave ;)

Also showed nice patience at the plate. I think he’s looked ok over his first handful of at bats.

  13. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:19 pm

Chris Sale sure looks like a young Randy Johnson to me, maybe not quite as much on his fastball but everything else is very similar…

  14. joecembrale August 6th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

For whatever people can say about him, he always plays the game the right way when he is ln the field. He always has his head in the game even though we dont always get the results we want.

  15. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

thank you Chad and the LoHud staff for removing a former player’s tweets from the right column that I found offensive…

    Oh no get Warren ready

  19. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:24 pm

Kuroda is standing out on the mound and trying to remember the last time he had a lead in the 1st inning…

  20. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Jeter fields that in his sleep. Nunez is killing us.

    Romine!

  21. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 8:25 pm

    August(sic)! ;)

  22. igotid88 August 6th, 2013 at 8:25 pm

    sit Warren down

  23. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:26 pm

That was just a great throw…

MG…..My grandparents lived on the Concourse just a few blocks up from Tremont. This was in the 50′s and early 60′s before the neighborhood went south. Fordham Road shopping at Alexanders and the IND to the Stadium. Occasionally we walked the extra blocks so we could make my day by taking the Jerome Ave. Ah the unique light green seats and the ivory limestone colored building. And the light towers that were always illuminated and of course the scoreboards. Loved that place and had the opportunity to play a Legion game there in 1970.

    Let’s keep starting Stewie!

  27. Pat M. August 6th, 2013 at 8:29 pm

Austin should be the regular catcher with Stewart as the tutor and backup… Doing so is no longer a sign of tossing in the towel, the kid needs to and should be playing

the only times I ever got there were for Yankees games, always the Lexington Ave Express to 161st St.

When I was in high school I was sort of on the baseball team (we really didn’t have a JV team but practiced occasionally)-in my junior year we won the Manhattan championship and played Curtis HS at McCombs Dam Park in the semis, the next year we also played against Curtis and Terry Crowley was their best player.

What’s happening with our stickball tournament? I think you mentioned that Frank Tepedino was still crushing long balls the last time-he and I went to the same junior high school back in the day…

  30. igotid88 August 6th, 2013 at 8:32 pm

maybe a little more 3/4 than Sale but, at least to me, pretty similar-here is some Big Unit video, let me know what you think- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_ZmHXY0GvI

Stewart should be tutored by little league players. He should be tutoring nobody.

  34. igotid88 August 6th, 2013 at 8:37 pm

    that’s out in Yankee stadium

  35. Lillibridge is a mini Buchholz August 6th, 2013 at 8:40 pm

His name isn’t Kernerko, but Kay insists on pronouncing it as such.

  36. mnmboys August 6th, 2013 at 8:40 pm

Kuroda better make this run hold up. Yanks may get no hit but actually have a shot to win the game

  37. Lillibridge is a mini Buchholz August 6th, 2013 at 8:45 pm

After his first month as a Yankee, SJ44 said on twitter that “it’s not the NL West anymore” and that Hiro would be the mop up man in a short period of time.

  38. Pat M. August 6th, 2013 at 8:45 pm

MG……I’ll be flying back to NYC on the 26th of next month for the next round ….From what I understand our games are at a playground off of Park Ave and 120th . I guess if you nail one you can reach the Metro North El. Not finalized yet. I remember Terry from spring training game in Miami. He was a better player as he got older than he was a young one. I grew up in Eastchester / Bronxville area but played in a lot of Legion Tourneys all throughout the NYC area. Weekend trips to Long Island was always cool

  39. Justice2000 August 6th, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Hiroki! The no hit win is underway!

  40. Lillibridge is a mini Buchholz August 6th, 2013 at 8:47 pm

this guy’s 38 years old and is at the top of his game. I wonder if we should try to sign him again, and for multiple years if necessary.

  41. Tar August 6th, 2013 at 8:48 pm

“Austin should be the regular catcher with Stewart as the tutor and backup… Doing so is no longer a sign of tossing in the towel, the kid needs to and should be playing”

I’ve been saying this for quite some time.

The plan should have been to have Romine eased into the job over the first month or so. And than handed the job to see what what he can give you.

The front office was quick to talk about and “Defensive first” catchers, but the reality is that was all an excuse because they didn’t have anybody decent offensively.

Romine has since day one been as good as Stewart defensively. He just was never given the opportunity to prove it.

Instead Romine rotted on the bench, concentrated (as he was told) on his D, and than people were amazed that he struggled offensively.

Stewart has done a great job. More than many of us expected (which is telling in itself) But this is not a post-season worthy team with him behind the plate.

As for Romine, we really don’t know that answer yet.

I hear boos in the other room, is alex up?

  48. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:53 pm

I would not want to be a lefthanded hitter against Chris Sale, I’d be in the dugout faster than Kruk against the Big Unit :)

  49. EndlessMike August 6th, 2013 at 8:54 pm

I know there’s a lefty but Granderson should be hitting.Put him in center.Soriano and Gradnerson should be in the lineup everyday. There’s no reason to not have the best lineup available.

  50. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 8:54 pm

    Another blown call…..

  55. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

He looked safe. Hey Girardi said the “F” word. Never have seen that before.

  56. DAM23 August 6th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Nice job Wells. Didn’t tell him to slide.

  57. MG August 6th, 2013 at 8:57 pm

how in the world did Gardner not slide into home, he would have easily beaten the throw and not given the ump a chance to blow the call…

  58. Tar August 6th, 2013 at 8:57 pm

The catcher sold that call, dumb ump.

  59. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

Last night Cano runs hard out of the box and tonight gardy hook slides that and you don’t give the ump the oppo to blow the call. Control what you can control.

  60. jackamir August 6th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

Gardner slides into first and runs through the plate…. The worst baseball instincts I have seen in many a year…

  61. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

He was clearly safe. But why didn’t Gardner slide? Considering how bad this offense is and a pitcher like Sale on the mound that play really hurts.

  62. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 9:01 pm

The worst part is I doubt that Girardi says anything to these players so they learn from it. Cano never runs hard and it cost them a run last night and now Gardner doesn’t slide? Gardner’s baseball instincts are really bad.

  63. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Tar 100% right. Porter had no clue on the call because he had a bad angle, he should have been in the corner of the rh box but wasn’t, so he was looking for a tell or clue and the catcher sold it.

  64. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 9:02 pm

Another strong inning from our Ace.

    Yup, I went there.

  65. MG August 6th, 2013 at 9:02 pm

could the leftfielder have thrown out Cano at 1st on that hit?

    OK, cheap shot :)

He would have beaten the throw by half a step…

  66. Lillibridge is a mini Buchholz August 6th, 2013 at 9:03 pm

That’s the sign of a terrible manager, Clutch. Players repeating the same mistakes countless times.

  67. mick August 6th, 2013 at 9:03 pm

The ump had no idea, so he asked the catcher who showed him the ball….gardy is fast but not a good baserunner. Jeter scores on that play and he’s not as fast.
    Is this an opinion?

  68. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 9:03 pm

Porter expected the hook slide which he wouldve been in great position for, but gardy went straight in.

  69. Tar August 6th, 2013 at 9:04 pm

    Unknown

Exactly, the Ump didn’t have a clue and he bought what the catcher was selling. I have no idea who the HP ump is but i’m guessing he’s inexperienced.

that sounds like a fun weekend-my golf game sucks, being in Florida in July isn’t exactly motivating to get out and play or practice, I haven’t hit a ball in about 3 weeks and probably won’t feel like it again until it cools down a little (in late September and October).

  91. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 9:13 pm

I wish that Girardi would just leave the regulars in the lineup everyday. The everyday lineup is bad enough but he can’t sit them to play AAA back ups just because they bat right handed. Overbay should have been at 1st base not Adams who is over matched.

I subscribe to MLBTV and watch it streamed through a Roku player-overall it’s been really good although sometimes the stream has to reload.

It does always give me the Yankees feed and now has an option to listen to either the TV or radio feed or just watch the game with the background noise at the stadium and no other audio-I should probably try that sometime…

the first time i saw ron kittle was at holyoke’s Mackenzie Field.

we were playing a semi pro game after their double a game. kittle hit two homers. long home runs. home runs way different than anything we’d seen there.

one time i read him saying that the reason he swung so hard on every pitch was that he might actually hit the pitch .

MG – I would love to go to Roku… the only problem is (at this point) there is apparently no way to log on to wifi with a username and password… As I’m in a hotel 5 days a week, that just doesn’t work for me. Hopefully, that will be addressed soon. Sorry for the game thread interuption

Too bad Ichiro isn’t in RF tonight. A decent throw and he is out.

  105. Pat M. August 6th, 2013 at 9:27 pm

Damn, Adams should have cut that throw and gone to 2nd

  106. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 9:28 pm

    Thank god he recovered

This Soriano is amazing out there.

  108. Tar August 6th, 2013 at 9:28 pm

    Bad…… than really good Sori!!!

  109. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Sori has actually played a decent LF since coming here….

  110. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Wow another nice catch by Soriano. He is much better in LF than I expected.

  111. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Sori looks like Swish in the OF….bad instincts but seems to always make the play.

  112. Pat M. August 6th, 2013 at 9:31 pm

I don’t think there was ever a real play at the plate regardless if Rocky Colovito was out there. The play was to cut the throw and nail the runner at second.

  113. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 9:31 pm

    Romine looking good….

  114. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 9:31 pm

Romine with another hit. I am sure Girardi is trying to ignore when he does something good on the field.

  120. Howler August 6th, 2013 at 9:34 pm

    Go Alex!

  124. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 9:36 pm

The Yanks have to pay Ricky or someone to tutor Gardner. That is the point of having all that speed if he can’t take advantage of it? It’s just being wasted

  131. jackamir August 6th, 2013 at 9:37 pm

    Vernon Wells: still terrible.

  141. bruceb August 6th, 2013 at 9:42 pm

  143. bruceb August 6th, 2013 at 9:44 pm

  151. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 9:53 pm

So much for running up his pitch count.

  152. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 9:53 pm

It might be asking a lot for this offense to score another run. Gardner cost them big time in this game.

  153. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 9:54 pm

    Eight pitch inning.

  154. Lillibridge is a mini Buchholz August 6th, 2013 at 9:55 pm

it’s always someone new costing us a ballgame. last night, it was Cano getting thrown out at 2nd (even though he wasnt out) that ended matters early.

  155. umbrelladoc August 6th, 2013 at 9:55 pm

Gardner and Ichiro have defensive stats that are off the charts. That would have been fine if the rest of the lineup hadn’t been depleted. Ichiro is at least good baserunner. Gardner is a lousy baserunner even with the speed. Remember a game where he didn’t try to score the winning run on a wild pitch with Jeter waving him home.

  156. jackamir August 6th, 2013 at 9:55 pm

I haven’t posted much in the past few weeks but it is noticeable how many of the diehards are gone. Those with strong opinions usually burn themselves out after 100 games…I call them “legends in their own minds.”

  158. comet August 6th, 2013 at 9:56 pm

    Have fun Pat!

Shame lets hopw we win by a couple. Sale is a good pitcher but the White Sox are a bad tea, then again we’re not so great ourselves, but only 5 games out of the wild card. If Arod gets going it would certainly help.

They’re catching great whites right now, drilling holes in their fins to plant a tag …they catch them by securing a them to their boat. Every time the thing moves the boat tips.

  367. Tar August 6th, 2013 at 11:27 pm

I just watched the Gardner replay 34 times. He may have slowed slightly, rounding third picking up thomson, but he did not “slow up or run home lackadaisical.

It’s just ridiculous and stupid for Kay to say ” you think he may have slowed down because he thought there wasn’t going to be a play at the plate.” Dumb dumb and dumb

The Catchers leg was also blocking the plate, making a slide problematic. He stepped right over his leg and was clearly safe. He was also looking at the plate and probably didn’t pick up Wells.

  368. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:27 pm

“I just think Gardner just didnt cut the bag right and it slowed him up.”

This is also possible, and may have contributed to him slowing slightly rounding third.

Anybody who says he didn’t run hard because he “didn’t think there was going to be a play” needs to stop believing Michael Kay’s observations. They are usually wrong

  377. joecembrale August 6th, 2013 at 11:32 pm

    Agreed, Tar.

  378. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 11:32 pm

    81 season was a strike season…no comparison.

  379. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:33 pm

Unknown, it will probably be just as bad in our home park, especially if we continue to tank.

Michael Kay is hard enough to listen to when we are winning…

  380. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 11:33 pm

Kay is getting worse as an announcer, instead of getting better. Dude needs to do a massive self-inventory this off-season. Maybe decide to give up the gig and focus on just being a radio talk show blow-hard.

  381. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 11:33 pm

Straw, sure, I’ll take anyone kicking Boston’s ass.

  382. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Although Winfield pretty much was Arod in 1981.

  383. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 11:35 pm

Probably right YF. Oh well, I’m not going to do it. If someone thinks that makes me a bad person they can go pound sand.

  384. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 11:35 pm

Unknown – We need to arrange for you to call Kay during his ESPN show. Shoulda heard him today pontificating. Unbearable.

  385. TheStraw August 6th, 2013 at 11:35 pm

Time to get out of here. Get em tomorrow boys.

  386. Captain Clutch August 6th, 2013 at 11:35 pm

If the pathetic offense keeps scoring 1 or 2 runs a game it looks like they are going to get a nice draft pick next year. That might be the only positive of this terrible season.

  387. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 11:35 pm

Girardi FTW on Alex getting hit.

  388. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:36 pm

All playoff losses are pretty brutal; however, I stayed in bed with the covers over my head for two months after we lost to the Red Sox in 2004. The only playoff game I ever left early was Game 7.

Postgame now on YES. Girardi’s really been nailing it off the field.

    ——–

Sadly, that won’t be happening because he just signed an extension earlier this year.

I really don’t see any difference between Kay and Harrelson.

  390. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Unknown, I am going there to support him, just as I did in Trenton.

  391. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:39 pm

Chicago guys are awful, but Kay just grinds you down, filling every inch of space with his endless chatter. Ugh.

    joecembrale August 6th, 2013 at 11:30 pm

Lou Piniella called it the single most disappointing moment of his career- “no way those guys were better than us.” Outside of school, I did not leave my house until November.
    ///

We had no business blowing that lead. Aw-ful.

  393. joecembrale August 6th, 2013 at 11:39 pm

Went to game 7 in 04. There is a Red Sox bar two blocks from my house in the Village. Listened to them celebrate way into the night. I thought my heart was going pop out of my chest. That, 81 and Ken Griffey sliding home are about my three lowlights.

George “Lumpy” Frazier. And I remember Bobby Brown botching a play in the outfield. Now theres a guy I havent thought about in a long time.

  396. JimK August 6th, 2013 at 11:41 pm

Fast approaching .500, does anyone really believe this team can make the playoffs?

  397. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 11:42 pm

J Al – I usually listen to Mike F. don’t know how long I would make it listening to Kay without actually doing just that and calling in. I know one thing, Kay is easy to rattle, the guy constantly throws temper tantrums on Twitter if someone dares to call him out on anything.

Girardi gets two thumbs up from me. Guy was dealt a crappy hand with just an overflowing plate of land mines in which to navigate around. He really has been nailing his pressers that’s the bottom line.

  398. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 11:43 pm

joec, 2004 was bad, but I kept feeling we were a little lucky to be up 3-0. No LHP was living dangerously and I wasn’t entirely surprised we ended up blowing that lead, although to have lost four in a row was spectacularly awful, and I do think Mariano’s tragedy in Panama was just a cosmically weird happening. Torre did a lot wrong, too. So many things went wrong. Law of averages I suppose, in the larger scheme. If we’d have had Pettitte, we probably win that series.

  399. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 11:45 pm

Good for you YF, we are on the same page on many things. Alex is definitely one of them. I hope he plays well. I think he will. He looks locked in and the ball is going start going out soon.

That is probably what annoys me most about Kay. He never shuts up.

His voice is nails on a chalkboard.

I called in once like four years ago and he actually let me talk. You need to slap him down, though; consider calling in :D

    Girardi has been magnificent.

  402. joecembrale August 6th, 2013 at 11:50 pm

Absolutely JAP. I remeber Fter game three saying, Wells, Clemens, Pettite and Mussina and we struggled to win in seven and now Mussina, Leiber and Vasquez and we are up 3-0. I am still waiting for Torre to start a runner when Wakefield was pitching to Varitek in extra innings. But…

  403. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:50 pm

Unknown, are you getting postgame? Good interview with him. I do think Alex is having good AB’s and that his timing will continue to improve. His line drive % in 2012 were 25.7 % vs. lefties. That ability to hit them will help, as should Jeet’s if we can get him back. But it likely will be too little too late.

  404. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 11:51 pm

joec – I had a Boston friend that wasn’t even a baseball fan who pissed me off with a “razzing” phonecall. I never spoke to that person again, and like you in ’81, just holed up and watched YES nostalgia highlights of seasons past in a kind of stupor. But ’81 nearly killed me.

  405. yankeefeminista August 6th, 2013 at 11:53 pm

GF, exactly. It is so grating. I remember after being at the Jeet 3000 game, coming home to watch the replay, and Kay just couldn’t let the crowd tell the story, he had to as usual talk, talk, talk. So many great Yankee moments have been filled with his noise and cliches. You’d think someone more fitting would be our voice on the air, but no.

  406. J. Alfred Prufrock August 6th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

joe, yep that was inexplicable. With all that, if Jorge throws the ball to the right side of second base, we probably win. Bernie doesn’t land on the wrong side of the chalk, we win….etc…

  407. UnKnown August 6th, 2013 at 11:55 pm

No I don’t get most of the pregame or postgame stuff. I always just watch the clips from YES Network after they getting posted on there. I just get all the games. Although I do get all of the pregame and postgame stuff that comes across WCBS but sometimes their isn’t much good content there.
