4. Prince Fielder 1B

5. Victor Martinez DH

6. Andy Dirks LF

7. Brayan Pena C

8. Hernan Perez 2B

9. Jose Iglesias SS

Rick Porcello RHP

Umpires: Will Little HP, Jerry Meals 1B, Paul Emmel 2B, Chris Conroy 3B

TV/radio: YES/WCBS 880

Weather: Cloudy, humid, threat of rain

Serious series trouble: The Yankees are 0-5-3 in their last eight series, their longest single-season drought of non-winning series since 1991.

Streaks: The Yankees have dropped four straight and five of six. Detroit has won 12 straight and 16 of 17.

Update, 7:17: Tarp is coming off. Could start around 7:50.

Update, 7:44: Paul Olden just read the lineups over the PA. A-Rod received a mix of boos and cheers.

Update, 7:54: A-Rod included in roll call, mixed reaction again. Nova gave up a hit on his first pitch, by the way, single by Jackson.

Update, 8:04: Nova gets out of bases-loaded, one-out problem with a pair of swinging Ks.

Update,  8:17: Cheers drown out boos for A-Rod. Soriano RBI infield out before that.

Update, 8:18: A-Rod goes down swinging. More boos than cheers.

Update, 8:31: Nova strands runners at second and third.

Update, 8:47: Nova has allowed four hits and two walks in his three innings so far, but he has made the big pitches, still no runs surrendered.

Update, 8:56: Cano two-run double, 3-0 in the third.

Update, 8:58: More cheers than boos for start of second A-Rod at-bat.

Update, 9:00: A-Rod goes down swinging again. Boos.

Update, 9:14: Nova has stranded eight Tigers in four innings.

Update, 9:28: Nova freezes Cabrera with a curve for the first out in the fifth.

Update, 9:33: Nova no runs, six hits allowed over five. At least he’s trustworthy again, he and Kuroda.

Update, 9:46: A-Rod strands two in scoring position to end the fifth, flies to right. More boos. Seemed like an equal split at the start of the at-bat. I think we’ve decided it’s a split decision here tonight for him in the booing and cheering department. He’s 0 for 3 and 3 for 14 for his young season.

Update, 9:50: Nova 1-2-3 sixth. Phil Coke replaces Porcello.

Update, 10:03: Gardner leaves two on base in the sixth after Bonderman came on. Yankees have three runs and seven hits through six.

Update, 10:12: Tigers finally get to Nova, RBI single by Cabrera, 3-1.

Update, 10:19: Smyly on to pitch for Detroit.

Update, 10:23: Ichiro has three hits, 3,992 overall between the majors and Japan. Cano hit into a double play, Rondon will come on.

Update, 10:27: Nova is out after seven. He has worked at least seven in his last six starts. He gave up one run and eight hits. Robertson comes on.

Update, 10:35: Robertson has a 1-2-3 eighth. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 21 outings, covering 20 1/3 innings, the longest single-season scoreless stretch of his career.

Update, 10:41: A-Rod fans for the third time in four hitless at-bats.

Update, 10:49: Rivera on for ninth.

Update, 11:03: Rivera blows save, two-run HR by Cabrera down to the last strike.

Update, 11:19: We head for the 10th. This is only the third time Rivera has blown back-to-back saves since 2005.

Update, 11:20: Boone Logan comes on. A-Rod, by the way, was pulled for defense in the ninth. Jayson Nix took over.

Update, 11:47: Yankees win 4-3 in 10 on Gardner single.

    Simple.
They will be swept by tigers, easily.

  2. Warning Track Power August 9th, 2013 at 7:05 pm

rain, rain go away, come back another day

rain, rain go away, leave ARod alone please

  3. blake August 9th, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Raining out the series would be the best outcome

  4. Bronx Jeers August 9th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

This has all the makings of one of those rain-outs where it actually never rains.

  5. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:12 pm

best if we lose all 3 games.

  6. blake August 9th, 2013 at 7:12 pm

I wonder if Miggy will make an out this series

  7. Warning Track Power August 9th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Yesterday the Yankees made up some ground and they didn’t even play.
Things are going to turn around for this team and this weekend is the perfect time.

  8. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

    WTP

Bet you think you’re going to win Powerball every week too? Good luck. :)

  9. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Things have come full circle. It’s obvious the only way forward is to take care of the team who has been such a pain, the Tigers. A sweep here and there won’t be any stopping this club.

  10. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

stopping this club en route to last place.

  11. Warning Track Power August 9th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

    Bruce
I am an optimist. I have faith. I am not a fair weather fan like a co worker of mine
who gave up on the season about 6 weeks ago.
I don’t like how the team is playing right now but I still have faith the team
can turn this around and get back in the race. The 2nd WC gives them that chance.

I know there are many “fans” here that enjoy seeing the team lose and let’s face it, find any excuse to complain about the game, the manager, the players, the umpires, etc….

  12. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

    OMG. There’s two of them!

  13. MTU August 9th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

    Consumed by hatred

    Drawn to the flame

Like a moth to the light

    Helpless in flight

It’s those appointing blame who burn

And never the one with the shame

So beware, take heed, or take your turn.

    ;)

I wonder if it’s the same private eye OJ hired to look for Nicole’s killer.

  15. Bronx Jeers August 9th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

YES has resorted to showing highlights from Jeter’s appearance on Jimmly Fallon last night.

  16. MTU August 9th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Any estimate on a start time yet ?

  17. RayVT August 9th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

One way for the Yanks to win a WC is not to play. LOL! Looks like Angels are bombing Cleveland & KC/Bos play each other so one has to lose. I also like SF & LAD’s chances against Bal & TB.

  18. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

I’m not a fair-weather fan but I am a realist. I knew that everything had to go right this season for them to stand a chance of making the playoffs. It hasn’t.

The roster wasn’t talented enough in the first place. The players they were banking on bolstering the team in the second half of the season have mostly met with further injury setbacks. They signed too many veteran re-treads and made insufficient moves before the trading deadline.

The offense ranks among the bottom three in the AL. Now, even their starting pitching is faltering under the strain of having to be perfect each and every outing.

It’s one thing to keep the faith but to come on here spouting nonsense about how they can still turn it around and pass half a dozen eminently better teams for the 2nd WC actually does you no credit.

“Fans” have every right to criticize when they feel ownership is not making the best decisions for their ball club and the manager is making bad calls during games, as Girardi most certainly did in the final game of the White Sox series.

You don’t have to be one of the cheerleaders to be a fan of a team.

It’s kinda tough to evaluate if Cano needs a supporting cast when he’s out there giving a monologue every night.

Hmmmm, so you’re saying that Cano is basically Hal Halbrook, putting on the white suit and mustache every night before going out to look into the abyss?

  26. jacksquat August 9th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Need to win this one because the next two don’t look good.

  27. austinmac August 9th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Alas poor AROD, I knew him well.

  28. blake August 9th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Tex should be a team player like Arod and take some roids this winter…..he either plays better or gets suspended and you save money…..win win

  29. Wave Your Hat August 9th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

I’ve never understood why some folks feel its necessary to leave your brain at the ballpark entrance in order to be a “real fan”.

  30. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

what is best for the franchise is us losing and being one of the worst teams in baseball this season.

  31. jacksquat August 9th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Btw, the yankees aren’t upset with arod because of steroids, they are upset with the contract that they gave him and would like to get out of it.

Of course….if he was still AROD then they would be backing him fully

  33. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

tex used steroids to get his contract, now he has no reason to use them.

  34. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

Bruce – Nah, that’s kind of the Tigers theme song. They get a ton of mileage out of that one during home games. Don’t ask me to make sense of it.

Basically I just need to see a few more games here before I put this season in a body bag. Trust me I have it laying in the corner, zipper open. BUT like I said I’m not ready to say goodbye yet.

  35. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

    Wave

I agree 100% with your sentiments but it’s the same on my soccer team blog in England. You criticize the team at your peril.

  37. blake August 9th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

@ESPNNYYankees: Youkilis is here. Must be payday

  38. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

    who is your team, bruceb?

  39. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

If I were a Tigers fan, I’d sure be believing right now. They’ve certainly had the Yankees’ number for the last few years.

  40. Shame Spencer August 9th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

JLo would be a more appropriate choice for this club.

  41. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Brighton and Hove Albion FC (aka The Seagulls). Championship team…one tier below the Premier League. We lost out in the playoffs to Crystal Palace last May.

  43. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

    Or Bad Company…just for A-Rod!

  44. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

yep, i think Wilfried Zaha helped beat them. Sorry bruceb.

  45. Shame Spencer August 9th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

    On the plus side…

@FisolaNYDN ARod’s having a better week than Mark Sanchez.

  46. blake August 9th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

As if the season couldn’t get worse….. They are seriously wearing those white billed softball caps

  47. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Nova needs to have a good first inning. Keep the crowd juiced in the game for AL’s AB and when we grab the lead. Really need a supportive crowd to get us back in the race vs. a vindictive one.

  48. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

mark sanchez is the happiest person in new york at the recent ARod stuff.

  49. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

You a closet Palace fan, Pulch? You seem to know your stuff. Yes, Zaha – now of Manchester Utd – did the damage in the 2nd leg.

  50. blake August 9th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

@keithlaw: If A-Rod didn’t exist, it would be necessary to invent him.

  51. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

    Let’s go boys!

  52. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Very good point about Sanchez. But for A-Rod, they would be ripping him a new one.

  53. astrocityfan August 9th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

I like the white brims on the caps. I need one of those.

  54. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

Nova has to throw a no no for them to win.
    Oh no, this is quick.

  55. Shame Spencer August 9th, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Why are they wearing those gross hats…?!

    Ugh Nunez.

  56. dimagg5 August 9th, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Why are they wearing their BP hats for the game?

  57. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

    The hat is ugly

  58. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

    3 run hr

  59. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

    No hitter gone.

  60. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

a manchester united supporter, bruceb. we signed Zaha in the January transfer window and Palace kept him on loan for the remainder of the campaign, so I followed the rest of his time at Palace.

i had planned on going to england this campaign to see Sir Alex Ferguson before he eventually retired. He then retired abruptly, David Moyes has done nothing to improve the roster. I dont expect to contend for the PL title this campaign. Just hoping for a top 4 finish, and with any luck, to grab the Community Shield on Sunday.

  61. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

“And in case I have not mentioned it in 15 seconds, the Tigers are awesome and A Rod is satan spawn….”
    Matt Vasgersian

  62. MG August 9th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

where in the world was Nunez on that play?

He was totally out of position with a breaking pitch being thrown.

That should have been a routine DP

  63. Bronx Jeers August 9th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

  66. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

They have to find a SS for next year

  67. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 8:00 pm

they’re wearing those hats so they can claim that the boos for A-Rod are actually for the ugly hat.

  68. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

woah, that was a nasty pitch by Nova.

  69. MG August 9th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

those caps are a desecration of the Yankees tradition.

Why don’t they just get a set of alternate uniforms that look like they belong in Central Park in the Broadway Show League?

  70. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 8:02 pm

Getting Cabrera to line out really helped

  71. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Rather than the usual 59-FIFTYs, they’ll be wearing the New Era Diamond Era collection that brings a new layer of performance headware to MLB players. The Diamond Era collection incorporates NE TECH” performance technology to keep players cool and dry by wicking away sweat and deflecting the sun’s rays. You might have seen the Yankees wearing these during Spring Training or Batting Practice, but this is the FIRST TIME that they’ve worn them during the regular season.

  84. JimK August 9th, 2013 at 8:11 pm

Looks like the ump is going to have a tight K zone; not so much on the last pitch to Gardner, but on the previous curve, which is Nova’s best pitch.

  85. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 8:11 pm

It’s all about finding new ways to increase players performance.

  100. luis August 9th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

  101. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Interesting reception. Not nearly what everyone was expecting.

  104. NYY_Girl_Penny August 9th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

this team always does the absolute minimum when runners on base and nobody out. Cano wants how much? anything more than 120mm forget it.. leave it to Arod to go 0-2 with a P who cant find the zone.. such a fruatrating team.

  105. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Shame – Yeah basically. It’s beyond funny don’t ya think.

Please let people know about sma, especially those having kids- early detection can at least avoid medical emergencies since it usually takes the lay doctor awhile to diagnose.

Sma is the leading genetic killer of children under 2, 1 in 40 of you are carriers. Two carriers have a 25% chance of having an sma stricken child.

  107. JimK August 9th, 2013 at 8:18 pm

next time the boos will be much louder

  108. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 8:18 pm

This is weak ab from arod.

  109. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 8:19 pm

He looks totally overmatched there, tying him up inside like last year

  110. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 8:19 pm

Not sure why it’s surprising when they expected a sell out for today’s game? That means 10-20k came for A-Rod. Not sure why you would buy a ticket just to boo.

    Too nice of a reception…

  112. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 8:20 pm

Awful at bat by A-Rod. He deserved booing for swinging at that last pitch alone!

  113. pulchritudinous August 9th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

very sorry for your loss, Rope. just sickeningly awful. RIP your little baby girl

  114. Pat M. August 9th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

I had three kids and never heard of Sma … Is it a relatively new Rope ??? Alex gets a pass first at bat and all. Whiffs again and his popularity wanes dramatically

  115. luis August 9th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

Nova leaving the ball up…. The first pitch should have been called a strike though

  116. NYY_Girl_Penny August 9th, 2013 at 8:22 pm

love and support a cheating liar that faked his way into a zillion dollar contract that is handcuffing the yankees finances while making excuses “im only human” .. anybody who supports this bum is really spineless and lacks morality.. if Arod was so sorry he’d renegotiate his contract to something he deserves.. or his stats allude to. if you think he is gonna be great or even above avg, your delusional this is all about selfish Arod wanting his 100mil period!

  117. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 8:22 pm

Arod should be booed if he continues to suck.
If he can deliver, people will cheer for him, no matter he’s juiced or not.

  118. Frozen Rope II August 9th, 2013 at 8:23 pm

they only discovered sma and diagnosing it the past decade or so. A lot of sids babies were probably affected with sma.

That many people didn’t cheer for A-Rod here BEFORE the Biogenesis scandal. Very odd.

  129. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 8:26 pm

That was an awful swing by Iglesias

  130. NYY_Girl_Penny August 9th, 2013 at 8:27 pm

George would tell Arod he can let us out of the contract into something more realistic or hez benched every game!

  131. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 8:27 pm

this team always does the absolute minimum when runners on base and nobody out.

That has been very much the case lately. Instead of driving the runners in with a double or even a well-struck single, we’ve been relying on moving them over with a worm-burner or a fly ball. That’s why we never have a big inning any more. It was all set up for Cano there. As Singleton said on the YES broadcast, he should have had the green light at 3-0. That one was the pitch to hit.

  132. Shame Spencer August 9th, 2013 at 8:27 pm

the ump has a very tight zone… This is not helping, what I would do is try to get the first pitch over… It seems that the tigers are laying off the first pitch

Sanchez is the worst player in ny sports history. Chris Stewart would make a better qb than Sanchez.

  149. JimK August 9th, 2013 at 8:37 pm

    Luis
I commented on the tight zone earlier; but I agree Nova has to throw 1st pitch strikes.

  150. NYY_Girl_Penny August 9th, 2013 at 8:37 pm

also people thought granderson would help this team lol his BA is a few points higher than Romine.

  151. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

It’s really annoying that the Tigers have a CFer and #2 pitcher from the Granderson trade. After this year the Yanks won’t have anything to show for it.

  254. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 9:29 pm

Girardi has to know something about Stewie that we don’t. It just doesn’t make sense.

  255. 4 NYY August 9th, 2013 at 9:31 pm

Nova’s curve has been so good for what 6-7 starts ?

It’s made him a winner. His FB is fast enough, just can’t locate it and it doesn’t have good movement. But now, with all the curve thrown, it’s more effective !!!

  256. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 9:32 pm

  260. chicken_stanley August 9th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

only a few weeks ago 90% of us were ready to have Romine drawn and quartered (including me… um maybe not the quartered part)… now 90% of us (including me) want to see him get much more playing time… fickle game

  261. 4 NYY August 9th, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Romine has potential, Stewie never did.

  262. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 9:36 pm

It’s nice to see Gardner’s bat come alive tonight

  263. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Nova’s FB is a great pitch as long as he keeps it down in the zone. It has a good sinking movement. Of course, CB makes it even better.

And I like the fact he’s going up with the FB once in a while, to keep the batters honest

  264. 4 NYY August 9th, 2013 at 9:37 pm

I wish Gardner would really learn how to be a thief.

  265. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Romine should be the starting C, just to get the growing pains and see what we got

  266. joecembrale August 9th, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Romine is still not the answer though. What this shows is that he definately hace Stewies job as back up. Maybe catch certain guys, but we stll need a front line vatcher IMHO.

I would just give him the sign when to go, but he prolly would still get a bad jump a lot.

  279. joecembrale August 9th, 2013 at 9:44 pm

1-2 years might be ok because he can also help out as a lefty dh. But I agree anything more would be a disaster.

  280. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 9:44 pm

Maybe Alex should open his stance vs righties

  281. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 9:46 pm

You can guarantee that the Yanks will regret leaving 2 runners at 3rd with less than 2 outs. Just like they did Wednesday when they left 40 guys on base.

  282. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

Mariano missed badly on that pitch to Miggy….. He’s done this a lot this season in streaks, missing locations

  417. egk August 9th, 2013 at 11:04 pm

How many people worried that was going to happen when Overbay misjudged that foul pop? They acted like he was stretched way out and missed it by that much. He just made a half-hearted attempt then misjudged it.

  418. mnmboys August 9th, 2013 at 11:04 pm

Yanks just don’t deserve to win any more ball games this year. They don’t make plays and they don’t score runs with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs.

  419. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 11:04 pm

Just bad karma about this team, particularly now Rodriguez is back. When Stewart ground into that double play in the bottom of the 8th I feared bad things would happen.

  420. umbrelladoc August 9th, 2013 at 11:04 pm

I guess it is WWWMW. His outs have been hard too. But Overbay has to have that. Maybe it’s time for Mo to break out the changeup.

  421. Madrugador August 9th, 2013 at 11:04 pm

Hard to win when you can only score three runs.

  422. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 11:04 pm

Overbay, I could say this is on you, but we left guys at thief with less than two outs

  423. Yankee44 August 9th, 2013 at 11:05 pm

With the way they’ve been playing, I just knew it was the kiss of death when Overbay failed to make that play :(

  424. Pat M. August 9th, 2013 at 11:05 pm

If Texeria makes that catch , does that give him a + 1 War on defense ????

  425. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 11:06 pm

    At third, not at thief

  426. NYYanksFan August 9th, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Good thing they took A-Rod out for a defensive replacement.

  427. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 11:07 pm

Overbay should be punished watching Jeter to tha stands’ video

  428. yanks28 August 9th, 2013 at 11:08 pm

What a bad team. Overbay needs to catch that–but we also need to score runners on 3rd with less than 2 outs. And I hate to say this, but that was a terrible pitch by Mo, right down the middle. He was missing that inning, just not his sharp self. Maybe it’s his typical August swoon…?

  429. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:08 pm

At least we know Jose Veras can lose to bad teams

  430. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 11:08 pm

    Who’s the villain tonight?

Stewart…for sucking every time he goes to the plate?
Overbay…for failing to lay his body out like Jeter would have done?
Mo…for throwing a meatball to the best one-legged hitter in baseball history?
A-Rod…just for being in the vicinity?

  431. JimK August 9th, 2013 at 11:08 pm

  436. jlyanks85 August 9th, 2013 at 11:11 pm

Team isn’t making playoffs anyway so another loss doesn’t make a difference.

  440. Ys Guy August 9th, 2013 at 11:11 pm

mo’s only been out of it in august once in his career.

he’s going to really have to work to keep up the intensity.

he’s never been quite as good in tied games, and in non save easy games hes been a little worse than that.

but he’s always been his best with everything one the line.

there won’t be much on the line from here on.

  441. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:11 pm

“Just out of curiousity – I don’t post all that much, but I read quite a bit of the posts. I haven’t seen Trisha in a week or more. Is she on vacation?… lose a bet?”

She’s a front-running homer who can’t take it when her team is horrible. Probably wasn’t a fan in 1992 when they finished in the basement, either.

This team is cooked and anyone who isn’t hoping for a last place finish and a great draft pick is just kidding themselves.

  444. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:12 pm

  445. yanks28 August 9th, 2013 at 11:12 pm

  451. Duh Innings II August 9th, 2013 at 11:14 pm

Mariano blows the save and is unavailable for tomorrow’s game.

If the Yankees lose this game they’re definitely losing two out of three or getting swept this weekend, and if they get swept Cashman should be fired and let’s see him get another GM job in the American League.

Boston, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Detroit, Kansas City, Cleveland, Texas, and Oakland wouldn’t hire him, so the only A.L. teams he could get a job with are Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and Seattle. I’d like to see him win a World Series with one of those teams (he wouldn’t win one.) He’d have limited money to play with with all those teams,.

  452. JimK August 9th, 2013 at 11:15 pm

Yankees are not going anywhere but I hate to see Mo go down in a blaze of personal mediocrity.

  453. beedogs August 9th, 2013 at 11:15 pm

Frankly, the ownership and Levine deserve to be kicked out of baseball long before Cashman, and Cashman is terrible.

  454. beedogs August 9th, 2013 at 11:16 pm

The Steinbrenner spawn should sell this team to some people who give a crap about winning.

  455. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 11:18 pm

How long before the Tigers put us out of our misery? Next inning is my bet.

  456. yanks28 August 9th, 2013 at 11:20 pm

The ownership’s terrible. But we’re looking at a serious drought now, for as far as the eye can see. Is Cashman not responsible for the dreary condition of the farm system? Ask yourself–is Brian Cashman the best we can do? Really?

  457. Ys Guy August 9th, 2013 at 11:20 pm

this team has missed the playoffs once before in cashman’s time as gm.

no other team comes close to that level of success.

if he leaves the yankees he will get a gm job, assuming he wants another.

  458. umbrelladoc August 9th, 2013 at 11:20 pm

JimK – Mo has been more hittable all year. He had a good change up as a starter and has toyed with it in spring training. It would just be like Mo to pull out a bugs bunny changeup at 43 yo.

  459. Yankee Trader August 9th, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Cashman collects 3M if he’s fired. He can take the year off and deposit his checks.

  460. beedogs August 9th, 2013 at 11:21 pm

Hopefully soon. This team needs to get as far under .500 as possible. I want to see maximum embarrassment to the front office at the end of all of this.

  461. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:21 pm

I really don’t understand taking Arod out for defense. It’s not like Nix is some gold glove over there. His defense is average at best. Girardi’s love for Nix and Stewart is absolutely ridiculous.

  462. longtimefan August 9th, 2013 at 11:22 pm

This is a terrible team, had multiple chances to build on tonight’s lead and did not, everyone connected with the construction of this mess is responsible and oh by the way lets clean house on the hitting and pitching coaches as well

  463. Ys Guy August 9th, 2013 at 11:22 pm

personally my choice would be to get rid or randy levine and let baseball people run the club.

  464. vc 11 August 9th, 2013 at 11:22 pm

How the H*** did I know they were going to blow this back in the third when they left Cano on third?

  465. Ys Guy August 9th, 2013 at 11:23 pm

if you get rid of cashman and don’t get rid of levine, levine will walk all over the next gm.

  466. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:24 pm

Why is Logan in the game over Kelly or Claiborne? Pitching him against 2 righties doesn’t make any sense. It’s like Girardi is just giving up this game now.

  467. chicken_stanley August 9th, 2013 at 11:24 pm

Cashman collects 3M if he’s fired. He can take the year off and deposit his checks.

If only I could collect 3M if fired… brings back memories of George Costanza trying to get fired on Seinfield.

  468. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 11:25 pm

Have to agree with longtimefan. There’s a nasty stench in the Bronx right now and this is the perfect time for change with Mo, Andy and, dare I say, Derek at the end of their careers.

  469. jmv August 9th, 2013 at 11:25 pm

    Is Cashman bad or hogtied?

    We don’t know for sure

  470. mnmboys August 9th, 2013 at 11:25 pm

This swoon all began with our last series win. A blown save by Mo on the Adam Jones HR. yanks have not been the same since. Can’t have Mo blowing games but even Mo can’t be perfect.

  471. mnmboys August 9th, 2013 at 11:27 pm

I called a 4-3 loss after they left Cano on in the 3rd…..

  472. mnmboys August 9th, 2013 at 11:28 pm

    Why is Logan still in?

  473. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Is Girardi even awake in the dugout? I would love to know why Logan is in there over the good righties.

  474. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:29 pm

    good job Boonie

  475. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:30 pm

Now Girardi goes to the bullpen after Logan faces 4 righties? Very bizarre managing by Girardi in that inning.

  476. Nick in SF August 9th, 2013 at 11:31 pm

I wasn’t too happy that Girardi let Stewie bat with the bases loaded.

I guess it would’ve been Vern, though, so who the heck knows.

Girardi wouldn’t let Romine PH for Stewie, just ‘cos

  477. filthy slider August 9th, 2013 at 11:31 pm

Does ARoid know he’s the worst player in baseball, can’t hit, can’t run, & can’t field. The Yanks have the worst defensive left side infield in baseball with ARoid & Nunez playing at the same time. Great job Cashman.
Nice to see Austin Jackson, guess he can play. Another Cashman give away.
Would rather put a hot stick in my eye than listen to Michael Fathead Kay defend ARoid the whole game.
p.s. If Tex is playing 1st. the game is over before the homer, very catchable ball, misplayed all the way.

  478. yanks28 August 9th, 2013 at 11:31 pm

There’s been much discussion about how infrequently the Yankees have missed the playoffs under Cashman’s watch. That’s true. But really, the team that has been dynastic, with the core four, wasn’t assembled by Cashman. It was Gene Michael and Bob Watson. Cashman inherited the structure of that dynasty, I think. With the cash advantage we have, I’d think we’d have done as well with any mediocre GM out there over these past several years. And I say it again: he’s overseen a truly wretched farm system devolution. Is that Levine? I really don’t know, but I do know that Cashman’s deals for prospects (e.g., Sheffield for Humberto Sanchez) have been absurdly bad.

  479. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:31 pm

The binder probably made him do it

  480. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 11:32 pm

    how about claiborne?

  482. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 11:33 pm

I agree, Nick. Stewart is a double play waiting to happen. Girardi should have pulled him and let Romine catch the 9th. To be honest, I actually think he’s lost it now. Biazarro management.

  483. Pat M. August 9th, 2013 at 11:33 pm

The first thing I really believe that needs to be done is remove Randy Levine from all baseball operations and shtt can that President Title. Next move Cashman upstairs and bring in a new GM ( John Hart please ) and restructure the entire organization

  484. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Cashman always usd the yankees wealth to build a bench that is better then the other competitors that could be woth 5 or more games a year and wins close division titles. He didn’t have that luxury this year

  485. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Girardi is absolutely obsessed with Stewie and he acts like Romine can’t catch Mo.. If Stewart’s defense was Molina like I can understand it but it’s almost like Girardi doesn’t see how bad he is. He is hitting .220 but more importantly his defense is awful. Not pinch hitting for him in the 8th is putting Girardi’s obsession with him before the team.

  486. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:36 pm

I am glad that Girardi’s boy toy Nixie is leading off the inning instead of Arod. That move doesn’t make any sense in a close game.

  487. Ys Guy August 9th, 2013 at 11:36 pm

when fox bought the dodgers, they brought in some network, non baseball type corporate suit to run things. they have absolutely no feel for what the dodgers and their fans or what baseball fans in general liked. and winning never really seemed like it was a priority.
the had no clue and after a few years, sold out for a profit to the mc courts.
i fear the same thing happening if the steins sell the yankees.
i don’t think hal is great, but i think theres a better-than 75% chance that they will sell to a worse entity.

  488. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 11:36 pm

Well it would be smart to end it right now. Kelley has atrocious numbers against Miggy and Prince so you’re looking at going to the pen if their is an 11th. Plus no way I want to see Miggy again tonight.

  489. bruceb August 9th, 2013 at 11:36 pm

  491. Yankee Trader August 9th, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Before you go that route it might help to run some of the FA’s that you have no designs on offering the QO, thru waivers and see if you can snag a few decent prospects.

  492. rm August 9th, 2013 at 11:38 pm

Trader. I was all for taking offers on Granderson and Cano this past winter, in fact Rich in NJ and I floated that concept last August and it received a very cold reception. This situation began a few winters back when they passed on Holliday, Beltran and then the Cuban outfielders. It’s going to get worse folks before it gets better. In all fairness to Overbay, that was no where near a can of corn guys.

  507. Ys Guy August 9th, 2013 at 11:42 pm

    Yikes!

    Serenity now!

  516. UnKnown August 9th, 2013 at 11:44 pm

And the season comes down to freaking STEWIE. Kill Me Now!!

    Come on CHRIS

  521. mnmboys August 9th, 2013 at 11:45 pm

Runner at 3rd less than 2 outs. Did u really think yanks would score???

  522. Mordot11 August 9th, 2013 at 11:46 pm

That’s it, Stewie, baby. Show you’re Girardi’s type of hitter.

  529. Nick in SF August 9th, 2013 at 11:46 pm

Girardi got the warm-and-fuzzies thinking about Stewie getting that magical walkoff hit.

  530. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:46 pm

Did Girardi really expect anything else from Stewie there? The fact that he didn’t pinch hit there is really hard to understand. It’s almost like he doesn’t care to win this game.

  531. igotid88 August 9th, 2013 at 11:47 pm

    Walk off

  532. Mordot11 August 9th, 2013 at 11:47 pm

    Gardy!!!!

  542. Nick in SF August 9th, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Stewie is my game MVP for letting himself strike out rather than GIDP so as to let Gardner get the walkoff hit.

When you hit in that situation, you don’t have to remember how many outs there are, do you?

  543. 4 NYY August 9th, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Stewie will lead off tomorrow !

  546. Madrugador August 9th, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Sterling needs a different game winning call because the one he uses is sounding hollow.

  547. Wang IS Taiwan August 9th, 2013 at 11:48 pm

    Surprising! Good for Gardner.

  548. Nick in SF August 9th, 2013 at 11:49 pm

    Smoltz sounds really depressed.

Don’t let that guy leave the stadium with his belt and shoelaces.

  549. cs in la August 9th, 2013 at 11:51 pm

    Nice, Gardner.

Lesson from tonight: don’t let Stewart ever bat with the bases loaded.

  550. umbrelladoc August 9th, 2013 at 11:52 pm

Indeed, Stewart took the advice proffered and made only one out per AB. And Mo pounding in on Cabrera’s knees probably was the difference on Gardner’s hit.

  551. JobaTipsHisCap August 9th, 2013 at 11:53 pm

    A win is a win

    Good they bailed out Mo

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and to expect different results. Keep sending Stewart out there, Joe.

    Vato was awesome

  554. Captain Clutch August 9th, 2013 at 11:59 pm

Cashman will have to tell Girardi to play Romine more over Stewie. Otherwise he will keep sending his boy toy out there.

  555. Nick in SF August 9th, 2013 at 11:59 pm

Lesson from this season: don’t let Stewart ever bat.

  556. RYUKINGDOM August 10th, 2013 at 12:05 am

Just remember that Soriano and ARod did absolutely nothing offensively when runners were on 3rd with no outs, then another time with one out. Had they scored only one run, the Yankees still would have won the game and Nova wouldn’t have been cheated from a win.

  557. UnKnown August 10th, 2013 at 12:07 am

One thing about watching Yankee games this year is it is just one constant head shake, jaw drop, spin around, curse words flying. Every single night.

This team man. This GodForsaken Team.

  558. JobaTipsHisCap August 10th, 2013 at 12:10 am

    The goal is defending .500!

  559. jmv August 10th, 2013 at 12:14 am

The good thing is that next spring training we’ll see the same brawl for the C position: Cervelli, Stewart, Romine. I hope Murphy bats .900 so he gets the job. Oh, wait… Joe and the C with good bats…

  560. mnmboys August 10th, 2013 at 12:17 am

  564. Madrugador August 10th, 2013 at 12:40 am

Didn’t see the game but seems like Nova had a lot of runners on base. Was he just lucky?

  565. Dill Pickler August 10th, 2013 at 12:49 am

“And the season comes down to freaking STEWIE. Kill Me Now!!”

Probably the funniest comment of the night.

This season was over weeks ago for this team.

Girardi should be either shot or fired. Or both. He is an indefensible idiot.
