Who picked Chris Stewart to be the Game 1 hero? After Ivan Nova settled in, and Robinson Cano made it close, it was Stewart who delivered the go-ahead, three-run homer in today’s 8-4 Yankees win to start this doubleheader against the Blue Jays. It was Stewart’s first home run since May 15, snapping a streak of 173 at-bats without one. Nova allowed four earned runs for the first time since April 21, but all four came in the second inning and he was awfully good otherwise in getting his third win of the month. Cano cut the Blue Jays lead to 4-3 with a three-run homer in the third inning, and Stewart hit his two-out, go-ahead homer in the sixth. A couple of insurance runs nearly let the Yankees avoid using Mariano Rivera, saving him for tonight’s nightcap, but Joba Chamberlain was pulled after a one-out walk and Rivera finished off the win.
