Tarp on the field, first pitch delayed

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 22, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s not raining, but the tarp is on the field and the Yankees are expecting more rain at some point. They’ve just announced that today’s game is starting in a delay. No word yet on a new first pitch time.

UPDATE, 2:28 p.m.: The update is that there is no update. The Yankees just announced that they still haven’t figured out an estimated first pitch. It’s not raining much, but there’s a steady drizzle. Just an annoying day.

UPDATE, 2:32 p.m.: Huge bit of thunder here. Maybe this storm is coming after all. Still annoying.

UPDATE, 3:44 p.m.: Hey! The tarp is coming off the field. They just dumped it and there’s now a small lake in shallow left and left-center.

UPDATE, 3:48 p.m.: Estimated 4:30 start time.

Based on the storm that just passed thru Central NJ I would suspect that the start time will be pushed to 2:30ish…maybe 3:00.

  2. yankeefeminista August 22nd, 2013 at 1:03 pm

Hopefully, the rain isn’t moving north. Still raining here in North NJ. Now just a steady rain vs. the electrical madness we had earlier.

  3. Shame Spencer August 22nd, 2013 at 1:04 pm

I’d prefer a start time no earlier than 6pm. :D

  4. ken tats August 22nd, 2013 at 1:05 pm

i agree. Cano is better, but not worth $20+ million a season

  5. yankeefeminista August 22nd, 2013 at 1:06 pm

Has Hal the weatherman, announced an actual start time?

  6. yankeefeminista August 22nd, 2013 at 1:08 pm

Shame, I was thinking you would like that. I on the other hand will do errands if they announce the start time; otherwise, I will be tethered to the TV, awaiting first pitch. Don’t want Andy to have to sit around too long either.

  7. champ809 August 22nd, 2013 at 1:09 pm

Robbie is definitely worth $20mil or more per season. If you look at who makes that kind of salary in the game then Cano definitely deserves that same pay grid. Look at all the hitters making $20mil or more and the only 1 whose better than Robbie is Miggy.

  8. yankeefeminista August 22nd, 2013 at 1:09 pm

“I have a LF that has played 2B too.” So, does that mean Robi would be moved to short?

  9. Hans Davenport August 22nd, 2013 at 1:10 pm

How many times did posada drive in 100 runs? He was kinda good

Once. He McCann are similar offensively.

  10. J. Alfred Prufrock August 22nd, 2013 at 1:10 pm

champ – plus Robi GG defense at up the middle position.

  11. champ809 August 22nd, 2013 at 1:10 pm

Robbie is on a career arc where he may be the BEST 2B to ever play the game….4 more years of what he’s doing now and he’s a first ballot HOF’er….

Played there in the minors and I thought he played there once this year. Soriano even played SS in the minors. :)

  14. champ809 August 22nd, 2013 at 1:14 pm

I really disagree with the idea that Choo + McCann are better than Robbie.

As a plan B if you can’t sign Robbie then it’s not a bad backup plan but the #1 priority has to be signing Robinson Cano to a Yankee for life contract. He should not wear another team’s uniform in his baseball career.

    -David Cone.

Maybe he can be the GM?? He seems to understand that offense has a place in winning games.

“I really disagree with the idea that Choo + McCann are better than Robbie.”

2 good players is better than 1…..especially when you can probably get the 2 players for about the same (or less) total money than the 1 player……

Some do get it, fortunately. Some get it but don’t want to pay him. Some don’t get it at all. Kinda wish there was some alternate universe in which Cano was dispatched elsewhere. Enjoy life with David Adams (who I like, so no dis) at 2B.

  20. blake August 22nd, 2013 at 1:19 pm

“I just don’t understand what people don’t get about how great Robbie actually is…..boggles the mind!”

he’s great….he’s on a 1st ballot HOF pace…..but that’s not the point and that’s what a lot of folks miss.

Pujols was one of the greatest RH hitters ever in his 20′s…..don’t you think the Angels would love to go back in time and not pay him for his 30′s for his production in his 20′s?

If money is no object and Hal is gonna blow away the budget then fine……pay Cano whatever he wants…..but if not then they need to be careful because big contracts for guys over 30 never work out in the end……never

He need not do much more to be the top 2ndbaseman in Yankee history. Besides the great defense 2nd baseman just don’t hit like he does. Not since Joe Morgan anyway.

    david cone looks psychotic

  23. blake August 22nd, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Ideally I’d like Hal to operate like the Yankees should and just sign Cano and worry about the rest later…..but I don’t see him doing that. I can’t say how far they should go with Cano without knowing the budget limits Hal with go to in the future…….

If he’s gonna hold a Cano contract over the team’s head like he has with Alex and Tex then no I don’t think they should sign him…..if not then sure why not.

  24. Hans Davenport August 22nd, 2013 at 1:27 pm

I was looking back and notice the Yankees played Don Alfonso at SS and 3rd, 10 games a piece in 2000. Didn’t know that. When he was at Norwich in 1999 I saw him play against Bowie.

  25. Niblick August 22nd, 2013 at 1:28 pm

Racism is what prevents many “fans” from recognizing Robbie’s true value. It’s obvious from all the code words and phrases (dog whistles) that are used to describe him: lazy, doesn’t hustle, has a low baseball IQ, etc.

That racism cry I see on here is a knee-jerk, lazy response.

It is the response of some feeble-minded people who use it as an excuse for their selfish, ignorant, rude or insensitive behavior.

    Yup.

Niblick, there are social stereotypes that have nothing to do with what is actually occurring which feed perception. I think some people don’t even realize they are doing this.

That creepy Michael Kay as begun to do the “lazy” thing with Cano. Kay is so slimy I have to wonder if that isn’t some push by management?

  31. J. Alfred Prufrock August 22nd, 2013 at 1:36 pm

The “smiling” thing has always been there, too. The idea is you only care about winning if you express suffering or “seriousness”. It’s ridiculous.

Vic Hadfield, a LW for the NYR, was traded for smiling.

  32. blake August 22nd, 2013 at 1:38 pm

“Kay is so slimy I have to wonder if that isn’t some push by management?”

almost certainly….although I do wish Robbie would run hard all the time. Kay is a mouthpiece for the front office.

  33. ken tats August 22nd, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Jeter is always smiling. Jeter is always hustling. Jeter is making smart decisions 99% of the time.

Cano is always smiling. Cano is not always smiling. Cano is making smart decisions less than 99% of the time.

  34. tomingeorgia August 22nd, 2013 at 1:39 pm

    JAP,
That was because Hadfield had no teeth.

  35. J. Alfred Prufrock August 22nd, 2013 at 1:42 pm

I always notice what Kay is pushing, because it usually comes from management.

However, I agree with GLove that they have taken notice that they can’t have success with scrubs and without fan identification.

And it’s completely valid, that there are perceptions floating around out there about Cano that are emotionally and culturally charged.

Prime example. How often do we hear that Cano is not “clutch:? That he can’t hit with RISP.

Here’s Cano this season with RISP and with 2 out and RISP:

    349 .460 .594 1.054
    .390 .545 .634 1.180

I posted this before. No one even comments.

If it doesn’t feed what has already been established as the consensus “reality” about who Cano is as a player, it is summarily dismissed.

But those are your facts, and the first one is over 137 PA.

  36. blake August 22nd, 2013 at 1:45 pm

    JAP,

I don’t worry about what Cano is now…..I worry about what he’ll be in 4 years. Again this contract isn’t going to be paying for the prime aged 22-30 aged Cano…..it’s going to be paying for the age 31-39 year old Cano……who most likely won’t be the same player as the 22-30 age one for a good bit of that contract.

Now that I’m feeling more like myself (because this team is playing more like the real Yankees and less like the JLo Yankees), I see no reason not to pursue Tanaka, Choo, McCann and also resign Cano.

Shame has spoken… let it be done.

  39. Giuseppe Franco August 22nd, 2013 at 1:49 pm

All that “dog whistle” racism stuff in nothing more than BS.

Why do these alleged dog whistle code words apply only to a minority like Cano but have always seemed to evade other Yankee minorities over the past 15 years like Jeter, Mo, Bernie, A-Rod, Posada, Matsui, Ichiro, etc, etc, etc…?????

    It’s all bunk.

Yeah, people simply don’t like Cano because he’s a minority yet the most beloved Yankees of the past decade plus are also minorities.

  41. J. Alfred Prufrock August 22nd, 2013 at 1:50 pm

blake, yes I get what you’re saying, that there’s thought behind your position.

I just don’t agree, as discussed before, that Cano isn’t going to age well. I think he will age gracefully and can always be a very useful LHDH in his twilight years.

I’m frankly irritated by the whole discussion. They should re-sign Cano and also bankroll getting other players for him to play with. I am resentful of Hal that his dumb 189 has put him into an unforced position of deciding either/or.

Hal can go to hell, frankly.

yea…..this……my whole position on Cano is based on me assuming what the budget is going to be……in reality they should sign him to a market value deal and absorb the cost when he declines because that’s what they have always done and that’s how they have made the playoffs every year for so long……

  55. ken tats August 22nd, 2013 at 2:02 pm

Jeter……the first Arod deal was a good deal for his value if Texas could have afforded it. There are some examples of good long term deals…..but every one of them that worked out the player was pretty young when they signed it.

I can’t think of a single 7+ year long deal for a player over 30 that turned out well……not one.

Correct. He was pretty much raised in Miami. Not sure about what was spoken in the home, however I don’t detect much of an accent at all in his English and that to me has always been a sign of how much English was spoken in a kid’s home.

  64. J. Alfred Prufrock August 22nd, 2013 at 2:06 pm

I’m not sure what your point is, but Alex is of Dominican descent and is bi-lingual. As I recall, he pissed off the Dominicans a few years ago by declaring he wanted to play for Team USA in the WBC, identifying himself as “an American.”

  65. Shame Spencer August 22nd, 2013 at 2:07 pm

This team will probably win 90 games without a starting catcher, their full time SS, and 1B.

Add McCann, and OFer like Choo, a pitcher to replace Andy and Hughes departing, and retaining Cano makes this team really really good.

You still have weaknesses at SS and 3B in 2014, but you can probably carry them with the added production at C and in the OF.

  66. J. Alfred Prufrock August 22nd, 2013 at 2:07 pm

  68. blake August 22nd, 2013 at 2:09 pm

I do think there is some level of sterotyping that goes along with Latin players with regards to the hustle stuff……you just hear it more about them than white players. That said…..the issue with Cano is real sometimes…..you can say what you want but sometimes he does run in about 3rd gear and it bites him and the team. That statement has nothing to do with his race…..it’s a fact and I’d say the same thing if somebody else did it.

Robbie Cano is so lazy that he plays every game! He practices extremely hard & it shows in his performance. He is liked by the whole team! He is a star amongst other stars but his star is glowing brighter than most if not all in Yankeeland.

Most people don’t appreciate greatness until it is gone!

Hints come from the Yankee FO and before you know it a lot of fans are singing the same song! I call this FOXism!

blake, yeah but he never gets hurt, which means he probably plays hurt, but we never hear about him being an iron man or “toughing it out” and playing every day. It doesn’t fit the consensus view of him, just like his drastically improved OBP (and that’s not all IBBs) and 1. OPS with RISP doesn’t. It’s not that it isn’t sometimes valid, it’s that he’s disproportionately defined by it, and it gets into the region of the ridiculous when it’s demanded he get his uniform “dirty,” even when he can make the play on his feet.

  74. Shame Spencer August 22nd, 2013 at 2:16 pm

blake – I guessed 92 and still think they can get there and make the playoffs (this belief is contingent on winning the Rays series this weekend).

Listen, it’s fine to believe some of the claims are overblown, but if you believe racism exists in society then it’s hard to fathom it would not carry over to every aspect of society including sports. If you do not believe racism is prevalent in society, you are more likely to believe it is not a problem in any situation, including sports. I strongly disagree with that view, but it’s a common theme, especially for people that have not experienced racism on a personal level. It’s understandable to not identify with something you have not experienced.

    RayVT – exactly!

There was an instance where Robi was crestfallen that reporters don’t even bother to go talk to him when he has a great game. He sounded actually somewhat hurt, saying he waited at his locker but nobody came. I saw the interview on either YES or ESPN or someplace like that.

The media also is subliminally responsible for what people view as “star power.”

I fractured 4 bones on the right side of my face a few years ago (only name I remember was the orbital)… 6 weeks after I had the surgery to put the plates in my face I was back skiing… I actually had no pain at all the whole time because the nerves for most of the right side of my face were crushed on impact, was numb for about 3-4 months… I would imagine the jaw is an even worse place to get hurt though cuz of how hard it must be to eat, I’m sure he’s just on fluids for awhile. At least the Braves have a nice lead, I’m sure he’ll be back come playoff time or a bit before.

Robinson Cano is not a speedy player first off.

Secondly the infatuation with guys “busting it down the line” on groundballs that they know and everyone knows will be routine outs is misguided.

Players shouldn’t lollygag but how many times do you see guys pull hamstrings or strain calves hustling out gb outs and miss a months worth of games….like El Capitain this year

It doesn’t fit the consensus view of him, just like his drastically improved OBP (and that’s not all IBBs) and 1. OPS with RISP doesn’t. It’s not that it isn’t sometimes valid, it’s that he’s disproportionately defined by it, and it gets into the region of the ridiculous when it’s demanded he get his uniform “dirty,” even when he can make the play on his feet.”

that’s fair…..me being cautious on a long term deal for him has nothing to do with any of that stuff…it’s totally his age.

    —-

    Of course racism exists.

I just think in this particular case regarding Cano those racism claims are bunk when you consider all of the minorities that have donned the pinstripes the past decade and those alleged dog whistle code words have never been attached to any other minority in the organization.

So why has Cano been singled out?

    Those claims make no sense.

There is a media bias in Baseball & it is against the Yankees. Could the reason be that Beantown’s little PED who jumps up & down on every play and rolls in the dirt for a routine grounder is somehow responsible for Robbie being ignored or worse described as lazy?

Cano is either the best 2B to ever play the game or at least top 4. (Hornsby, Morgan, ??)

For many years I have listened to the SS of the month or year or perhaps even a few years used to try & diss Jeter. Jeter stands above all of them or at least shoulder to shoulder with Ripken who was dissed too as being a 3B playing SS.

You have to open both eyes & watch for yourself. Close the pontifs who speak babble for their own pleasure & profit. You are capable of recognizing greatness even if greatness is wearing pinstripes!

  92. champ809 August 22nd, 2013 at 2:34 pm

I don’t see the issue being how long the contracts were or are. There is more risk but you look at the player, his health history and his habits i think and I’d be willing to go 7 with an option for Robbie.

Of course if he’d agree to 5 or 6 years then better for the Yanks but clearly there will be a 7 if not and 8 year offer out there for him and if that’s where the market is you have to make the deal in my opinion.

BTW Jeter is obviously another example.

If and when Robbie’s defense begins to slip I believe he’ll still have his swing mechanics, easy bat speed and barrel up a ball ability to transition into a Big Papi type DH later in his career.

GF – I’m not sure it actually is Cano specific, I think it just might be that this is a Yankee’s blog and therefore Yankee centric. For example, you cited Brett Gardner as having 0 baseball IQ.. which there is a lot of truth to, but that’s a discussion that largely happens on here. I haven’t seen that discussion play out in the media at all. Sometimes maybe it’s mentioned on YES that he doesn’t have great base-running instincts? But I’m having trouble remembering any occasion where this has been discussed at the same length as Robbie’s work ethic issues. I mean, even Joba’s work ethic hasn’t been questioned as often as Robbie’s. That’s …kind of amazing.

I know JF has cited several sources that have done real research in this area and it’s show certain qualifiers are more likely to be attributed to certain players depending on their ethnicity. I’m sure more studies like it will follow.

Not really. Joba Chamberlain is not worth discussing. Cano is a star.

The fact that Cano is a star is likely the reason that his personal shortcomings are more talked about.

    Jeter: .313 .381 .447 .829 117 OPS+
    Ripken: .276 .340 .447 .788 112 OPS+

It’s interesting about Gardner. You look at his numbers and they really aren’t there, but this Gardner, to me, is a way better player than the 2010 version.

I was never a big Gardner advocate but I am impressed with changes he made to his swing and plate mechanics. He is a much better hitter this year than I ever thought he would become, despite the numbers. I actually feel like he can hit and drive the ball when he steps into the box, even though the OBP has suffered, and I have never had that sense about him. It’s a shame he’s a late bloomer, but he was smart to focus on hitting, since he’s already 30 years old and is bound to lose a step. In my mind, he’s had a great year for us.

  118. Chip August 22nd, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Melky Cabrera has been on the disabled list since August 2 with a strained knee and Barry Davis of Sportsnet in Canada reports that the outfielder is not expected to rejoin the Blue Jays this season.

Cabrera has played just 88 of 127 games due to multiple injuries and wasn’t much good when healthy enough to be in the lineup either, hitting .279 with three homers and a .682 OPS. That’s a 224-point drop in OPS from Cabrera’s pre-suspension production with the Giants last season and a 127-point drop from his 2011 work with the Royals.

Nope, steroids don’t have any impact on production :-)

clearly that article is more about complaining about Kay than anything else….it’s just snarky crap more or less and the kind of stuff that’s more and more common in the internet news world. Forget that Jeter has ran hard his whole career and rarely been hurt…..forget that Ichiro busts it every play and is never hurt…..etc.

    ——————————-

Well yeah, he’s comparing the body of a 39 year old to that of one 10 years his junior. When Jeter was Robbie’s age he ran hard all the time and never missed games.

Just another ho-hum eight shutout innings for Clayton Kershaw. His 1.72 ERA is nearly 3/4 of a run lower than Verlander in his MVP season.

    Clayton is amazing.

The main batch of rain looks like it will be pulling out of NYC in the next 1/2 hour or so… Some T-Storms popping up out in PA though, with some luck none of those will hit the stadium and the game will get going like 430-5ish

It’s not Morneau’s year long stats, it’s how he is doing now vs Overbay. Morenau has really started to hit and he rakes at YS. Overbay is Overbay. It’s only a month rental and if Morneau is going to continue hitting the way he is it’s worth it for a month. Platoon Morneau with Reynolds at first.

    Morneau in August
    21 games
    .303 AVG
    .944 OPS
    7 HR
    21 RBI

    Overbay in August
    16 games

    1 HR
    5 RBI

  195. Tar August 22nd, 2013 at 4:20 pm

“Platoon Morneau with Reynolds at first.”

Yep, Reynolds can be back-up 3rd base as well. Overbay DH, Back-up 1B, AND PH. Basically 3 players for 2 spots plus back-ups.

BTW those were Mourneau’s “career” stats FROM ABOVE, not just this year. He kills the Sox, O’s and the Rays.

The elf is more likeable than Cano becaue he looks like he is hustling all of the time while Cano dies not. Cano is slower than Pedroia and he often looks like he is loafing. But Cano is a much better player than pedey. I hope we can keep him for 5/100 but I think it will take something closer to 5/125 or 6/150

  199. Tar August 22nd, 2013 at 4:25 pm

We can make fun of “grit” all we want, but Mr. Keebler is an intense competitor that all of us would love if he was a Yankee. An O’Neill type…

However no way should he even be in the same discussion with Cano.

  200. pkyankfan69 August 22nd, 2013 at 4:26 pm

    Wish we could get Robbie for 5 years – $125… That’s a no brainer… Think I’d go for 6 years $150 also

  201. yankeefeminista August 22nd, 2013 at 4:26 pm

For some reason people have the misconception that “grit” and that other word starting with “g,” being “gifted” are mutually exclusive. Well, they aren’t. Cano doesn’t lack grit, he just looks too good for some, doing what he does. Just because he doesn’t look like a woodchuck chopping down a tree when he moves like Pedey does doesn’t mean Cano lacks guts, pluck, intestinal fortitude, tenacity, etc. Too funny.

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Right here is the perfect web site for anybody who wishes to find out about this topic. You understand so much its almost tough to argue with you (not that I actually would want to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new spin on a subject that has been discussed for decades. Great stuff, just great!

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface.
