Reynolds: “It’s definitely got me on time more”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 31, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mark Reynolds

Mark Reynolds’ first seven games with the Yankees
19 at-bats
Three hits
One extra-base hit
Five strikeouts

Mark Reynolds’ past five games with the Yankees
19 at-bats
Nine hits
Four extra-base hits
Five strikeouts

“I’m getting my foot down earlier, trying to recognize better,” he said. “We looked at video and figured some things out, just basically trying to get my timing earlier and recognize the pitch and see it a little longer. So far it’s worked out. … It’s definitely got me on time more. I’m able to recognize more pitches and not swing at as many balls. I’ve been able to make better contact. Hopefully I can stay consistent with hit.”

Yankees face another right-handed starter today. Will Reynolds be in the lineup?

Of course Reynolds will be in.

At this point in the Season you have to stick with the hot hand.

    ;)

    MTU,

He’s a prolific writer as well for a Harvard academic, certainly not trapped in his own head with his smarts. He knows how to clearly translate complex scientific information to the public. For me, all it took was the combining of two words for me to understand the gist of his approach to nutrition and health. He said we have “ancient genes” and he kept repeating that phrase throughout one of the books of his I read. That’s all we need to know in order to adjust our eating/lifestyle. We need to look at how our distant ancestors ate and how they thrived and how nature impacted our biology, particularly the development of our genetic code. What foods are familiar to our genes and thus our biology? What foods are alien and thus potentially can complicate our functioning?

The grandfather of his way of thinking is actually a dentist, Dr. Weston A. Price.

Dr. Price was fascinated by the impact of nutrition and oral health so while he studied hunter-gatherer tribes as some first became exposed to western diets high in sugar and grains, he noted soaring incidences of chronic diseases in those populations. His documentations in Nutrition and Physical Degeneration (Blake should read this) formed the basis for how Hyman and Deans and Cordain and many of the others turning their eyes back to the past think about health through the lens of history.

The question of the day is whether Reynolds has always used that toe tap or is it something that he picked up over the past few years.

If he has always used it maybe the Yankees have caught real lightning in a bottle-this guy has true power and could really help them if he can cut down the strikeouts.

  4. MTU August 31st, 2013 at 8:44 am

    Buster-

    Thanks for that mini treatise.

I think you are in a fascinating field.

You talk about the complexity of our genetic heritage.

How about the complexity of our Brains ?

There are large portions of it which Science has yet to understand.

For example, the Parietal lobe. Whole sections of which appear to be doing nothing.

But can that be true ?

    ;)

  5. MTU August 31st, 2013 at 8:46 am

    MG-

When Reynolds is hot he’s extremely deadly.

I’m sure you saw what he did for the O’s against us and others at the end of last season.

Maybe we’ll be lucky like them and get that Reynolds.

    :)

  6. MTU August 31st, 2013 at 8:46 am

But it’s our Pitching I am more concerned about right now.

    :(

  7. RYUKINGDOM August 31st, 2013 at 8:50 am

Now if he can only stop with that tip toeing from base to base. Just hit them far and gone.

  8. 86w183 August 31st, 2013 at 8:52 am

When a streaky hitter is hot you don’t sit him. Let Overbay watch.

I’m glad I was in favor of the Soriano pick up. He’s been tremendous and it’s obvious he has plenty left and will be an absolute STEAL at $ 5 M for 2014.

How much would Reynold cost as an Eric Chavez type 1B/3B/DH combo? He’s making $ 6 M this year. Maybe $ 3 or 4 ??

  9. Jesus Bustero August 31st, 2013 at 8:53 am

The interconnectedness of human biology is fascinating.

Some are now saying that Nutrition studies our second brain.

Check out this article: The future of psychiatry may be inside your stomach

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/8.....ur-stomach

Food definitely changes how we feel.

You are what you eat ;)

While fascinated by the connection between mental health and nutrition, I’m going to pursue the connection between environmental health and nutrition as I find it no coincidence the world has grown sick just as humans have. I’m interested in how we can restore our relationship with Mother Nature through how we obtain food and how Mother Nature’s nourishment can restore both our health and hers. My field is ripe for a pioneer to come in here and build on the work of Wendell Berry.

  10. exiledintampa August 31st, 2013 at 8:53 am

The base running was a real problem last night. It could have cost us the game. You can’t waste runners like that and win much.

  11. yanks61 August 31st, 2013 at 8:55 am

“He just sips……he’s way too refined to get sauced…..and also it would make it easier for a bear to eat him.”

But Blake, wouldn’t the bear find him tastier sauced?

  12. RhapsodyInBlue August 31st, 2013 at 8:56 am

    MTU

In the case of CC and Hiro there are just so many innings over the years on those two arms, to me they look tired.

You can actually see it take it’s toll on Kuroda when an error forces him to throw more pitches in an inning than we would like.

I’m not sure if a pass in the rotation is going to help in either situation now that we are getting down to the grind.

    We can only hope.

  13. TheStraw August 31st, 2013 at 8:56 am

    True enough, MTU!

Well, then, think of those hungry bears before you leave the house. I suggest taking a swig or two of cognac before stepping out – if they’re especially picky ,I think they may find Courvoisier to be quite suitable.

    A votre santé, Monsieur MTU!

  16. 86w183 August 31st, 2013 at 9:05 am

On July 9 CC lost a 3-1 complete game to Kansas City and his ERa stood at 3.99

Since then in nine starts his ERa is 8.32. Yet his velocity seems to have been improving. His FB command has not been good and he has been walking about 4.3 batters per nine innnings and that’s really hurt.

I’d bet on him being much better in 2014. He is a prideful man and I think he really wants to make a run @ 300 wins, which would take six years @ 16 wins/season.

  17. Poetkiosk August 31st, 2013 at 9:08 am

Your heart has to really go out fro CC. He is a warrior by nature. This must very tough for him. He has not experienced a ton of failure, so he may not know how to deal with it.

  18. jmills August 31st, 2013 at 9:09 am

I made the mistake in Algonquin park of opening a can of sardines. That night the bears came, turning over whatever they could get into. I waited them out in the tent, kicking myself the whole time.

  19. yanks61 August 31st, 2013 at 9:13 am

“How much would Reynold cost as an Eric Chavez type 1B/3B/DH combo? He’s making $ 6 M this year. Maybe $ 3 or 4 ??”

86, exactly what I was wondering. I’d really like him for that role.

    ————————————————————–

It’s funny about all the attention we’ve been (understandably) paying to the O next year but, like MTU, I’m seriously worried about the pitching. As I understand it, there really aren’t any interesting hurlers on the FA market. It’s going to be a very interesting winter seeing how they go about patching up a (hopefully) competitive team – or at least one that isn’t an embarassment.

  20. MTU August 31st, 2013 at 9:13 am

But I am concerned about the here and now.

    I agree with RIB.

Both CC and Kuroda could use a little rest.

    Especially Kuroda.

The unfortunate problem is how to implement that in the heat of a pennant race ?

Hughes should be pulled in favor of Huff for at least one start IMO.

It’s a darn shame that Pineda, Phelps, or Nuno are not available to help out.

Another indication of the poor luck of our Season.

Warren might be an option when he is available again.

  21. jmills August 31st, 2013 at 9:13 am

Cc has been durable. He’s the only 300 potential on the horizon, but he’s going to have to last like Gaylord Perry or something to get there.

  22. GregD August 31st, 2013 at 9:15 am

Flash kept talking about CCs pitching cuttiing last night….he has to stay closed and keep his hand behind the ball

  23. MTU August 31st, 2013 at 9:16 am

I think CC should fatten up again.

    He’s too damn thin.

That has to be causing all the trouble.

Perhaps Blake or Tom could invite him over.

    :)

Whenever we trek out to bear country on fishing excursions we usually put all of our food into capped plastic 5 gallon pails and with a rope pull them up into a tree for the night.

It works. Any food or the smell of it in or around the campsite invites critters and trouble.

  25. jmills August 31st, 2013 at 9:19 am

I listened to a radio spot yesterday relating Seaver’s thoughts that today’s pitchers don’t have the durabilty and stamina of say, a Fergie Jenkins who had five 300 plus inning seasons. Dirk Hayhurst got very adamant that Tom was way off mark, stating someone like Jenkins was just just genetically lucky.

  26. exiledintampa August 31st, 2013 at 9:20 am

If you take what Soriano has done with the Yankees over a whole season, he’d have 61 HRs.

  27. MTU August 31st, 2013 at 9:20 am

When Sep’t. rolls around what about an all reliever game ?

2 innings apiece to spell Kuroda or CC.

Use Claiborne, Whitley, Warren, Betances, etc.

Or simply pull one or both of them early and do the above.

let’s get ‘em a couple of blowouts to wrok with.

RIB, it seems Hughes is going on Monday and not being passed up. So, I suppose the Yanks could give Huff one of those starts (for CC or Kuroda.) Who would you suggest for the other?

And if Hughes has another bum start, who do they replace HIM with? It’s really a shame that CC and Kuroda are both pretty shot at the same time.

I think that 86 is correct and CC is just having one of those bad years that even some great pitchers have from time to time, and that he’ll figure it out for next year – when it will probably not matter, alas!

Have a good day everyone. Go Yanks!

Put Hughes in the pen let him patchwork an inning or two in one of those games.

A couple of years ago in June I was up in Alaska had my tent under a big spruce right on the bank of the Kesilof River fishing the King Salmon Run.

At night of course in June there is 24 hours of daylight. One night I was woke up from what sounded a large animal rambling around in the brush right outside of my tent but I didn’t have the courage to venture outside to investigate, or a gun, finally it left.

One of my trips into town for supplies I saw that they were selling packaged moose poop to the tourists, one dropping about the size of a golfball. I told the store owner that I had enough of it around my tent to finance my trip.

  66. austinmac August 31st, 2013 at 10:02 am

    Buster,

The decline in velocity is clearly the cause of CC’s season. That is a huge difference. At 92, he has about an average MLB fastball. I suspect he will not get any back. I doubt bone chip removal has a long recovery rate.

  67. exiledintampa August 31st, 2013 at 10:03 am

My real question is why does Rob Thomson(sp?) still have a job? He took us out of at least two innings with blunders. Where was Soriano going at third on the bunt?

  68. Madrugador August 31st, 2013 at 10:04 am

Plenty of pitchers lose speed as they get older. The good ones learn how to pitch with what they have got. CC hasn’t figured it out yet. Whether he will or not, we will see.

Even if CC’s does not get all of his former velo back he should be fine because of his excellent 2ndary stuff and high pitchability.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
