    Good morning.

    Couple things need to happen.

    Our bats need to come alive again.

    Our starters need to get it together.

    Absolute minimum is 2 of 3.

  2. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 8:30 am

    Morning, folks!
    Time to regroup and sweep the White Sox. Pray that it is the Good Phil today, although we haven’t seen much of that guy over the last few months.

  3. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 8:32 am

    Tom-

    Girardi better have a short leash on Hughes.

    Be ready for the quick hook.

    Good morning

    After looking at the remaining schedules of all the possible AL teams, it’s getting close to ” the fat lady singing” for the Yankees.

    20-6 gets them 92 wins.

    In fact I believe the only team from the AL East that might get in are the Red Sox .

  6. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 8:51 am

    Three lefties. Lots of Wellsy, no doubt.

    Pretty good ERAs from all White Sox pitchers. It won’t be an easy series.

  7. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 8:58 am

    YT-

    All they need do is match TB and Baltimore the rest of the way and defeat them in the head to head play coming up.

    Cleveland is a little more concerning since we have no direct influence over them.

    They are not going to need to 20-6 or anywhere near it unless TB, Baltimore and the Tribe do it.

    I don’t think any of them will.

    Also we have 3 games with the Stros at the end. Easy pickins.

    It all depends on our pitching.

    CC and Kuroda have to get it together.

  8. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 8:58 am

    It certainly would help if Jeter, batting .167, could get into a groove.

  9. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 9:00 am

    Mac-

    It won’t be easy if our pitchers don’t pitch and our hitters don’t hit.

    For sure.

    If they do it shouldn’t be a problem.

    That’s a big ‘if” though I admit.

    ;)

  10. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 9:04 am

    MTU

    Except for a three game series vs the Royals, The Indians play their last 17 games vs sub .500 teams.

  11. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 9:06 am

    MTU,

    They have to score more runs. Do we really think Hughes is going to win 2-1 today?

    I think Clairborne will be up today. They sure needed him yesterday.

  12. 86w183 September 2nd, 2013 at 9:06 am

    Good morning gang —-

    Three big days coming up. The Yanks need to take care of Chicago and then reap the benefits of the Baltimore/Cleveland and Texas/Oakland series. LAA smacking Tampa Bay out West would not hurt either.

    My only criticism for Girardi is IF Pettitte is gassed and near the end AND you have two RH hitters coming up why not start the inning with Kelly? A well-rested bullpen easily can handle three innings.

  13. Jesus Bustero September 2nd, 2013 at 9:07 am

    Who would have thought Phil Hughes would have the same ERA as CC Sabathia in September?

  14. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 9:08 am

    YT-

    That is a concern. Especially since we have no head to head play with them.

    It sucks when you need help from other Teams.

    It was always a long shot YT.

    They have done well to get this far.

    :(

  15. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 9:11 am

    3B Ronnier Mustelier 3-4 – batting .333/.378/.571 over his last 10 games

    The Yankees sure could have used that production at 3rd. Too bad he injured himself in ST.

  16. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 9:13 am

    YT-

    I said many times that “if it weren’t for bad luck he wouldn’t have no luck at all.”

    Why didn’t they call him up now though ?

    I know it takes a move but his bat is much better than Adams.

    And we need all the bats we can muster.

  17. Doreen September 2nd, 2013 at 9:15 am

    86w183

    When the dust cleared in my mind, aside from the question of Joba, I was left with the same question you were. Why not have the bullpen start a fresh inning?

    I get that Pettitte was doing well, but he really hasn’t gone 7 lately and it was humid out there So in the cold light of a gray day, that is the move that would have most made sense. Not putting Pettitte out there to start that inning.

  18. 86w183 September 2nd, 2013 at 9:23 am

    Doreen —

    Brilliant minds think alike!

    Talking about no luck or whatever…. look at the difference in these stats:

    696 Hits, 109 2B, 119 HR, 365 RBI

    Versus

    94 Hits, 18 2B, 14 HR, 43 RBI

    That’s Arod + Jeter + Tex + Granderson + Youkilis 2012 (above) same guys 2013 (below).

    Some drop off was certainly predictable, but not that much. There’s your lack of offense.

  19. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 9:23 am

    Girardi has a ton of relief help.

    From here on any starter who is not getting it done should be pulled early so that we still have chance.

    Games have to be managed with a sense of urgency.

    We have Marshall, Betances, Claiborne, Kelley, Cabral, Warren, Logan, d-Rob,Huff and Mo

    Use ‘em as needed.

    We have 3 long Men to bridge gaps.

  20. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 9:25 am

    And anyone who is hitting plays.

    ;)

  21. Doreen September 2nd, 2013 at 9:27 am

    I have to say it was strange yesterday, though. I had to go food shopping. At the checkout counter I checked the score and saw it was still 3-0 in the seventh. I then walked out to my carm put the groceries in, and then turned on the radio, and it was 4-3. I got home, out on the TV, and watched what I thought was a replay if the 3-run HR that I missed. I though it was the bottom of the 7th and that they were showing the replay of the HR that put the O’s ahead. I was stunned when I learned it was, yes, a replay, but of a different 3-run HR.

    The thing is that all of this happened in about 10 minutes time, maybe 15, so not knowing the details if how the inning unfolded, it was perfectly reasonable for me to have thought the top of 7th inning ended at 4-3. I wasnt even all that upset with 4-3. Figured they could come back from that, and I think they would have. The orioles are a good team and it was amazing they ad been held at bay for that long.

    Then when I saw the replay of Happ’s HR, and saw how it just made it out, I realized that it was one of those games…

    And now the task is even more daunting. And I have zero expectations. Meaning, whatever happens, happens.

  22. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 9:28 am

    Doreen and 86-

    With the best bullpen in the league in the past month, as good as Pettitte has been the last few starts, you wonder why he lets him face Morse and Valencia, and then pulls him when Weiter’s, a lefty lifetime 2-12 with 8 strikeouts vs Pettitte.

  23. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 9:31 am

    I agree on Doreen’s let’s just see what happens concept. I don’t expect it, but I sure will watch closely in hopes we can somehow go on a streak.

  24. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 9:33 am

    When a crisis arises, the proper response is “All hands on deck!” Narrow and restrictive roles for players have to be tossed out the window. What use is a philosophy that produces a healthy, rested team that’s six games back in September? Nobody should be completely and deliberately worn out, but there’s all winter to rest. Play your best players in all situations, starting today, Joe.

  25. Doreen September 2nd, 2013 at 9:33 am

    MTU,

    Girardi did that yesterday. As soon as he saw Pettitte was failing he got him out. Can quibble that he should not have started the inning, or one less batter, but for Girardi that was a quick hook. And he had a quick hook with Sabathia in that other game.

    It was just time for the bullpen to have a bad day. And Logan was actually on point. Thus season it has definitely seemed that when a reliever has a bad outing, every reliever to follow also has a bad day. I’ve looked at it as them getting the bad out of their system all at once. Would rather have o e really bad game than a series of them. They’re a pretty reliable lot in that pen.

    So I’m not afraid that he’ll stick with Hughes too long.

  26. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 9:35 am

    I would leave Wells hands on deck in the dugout for Ichiro and Granderson.
    Eff their leftys, well maybe Sales…

  27. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 9:37 am

    I don’t think they will stick long with Hughes either. The thing always is, a bullpen guy presents risks too as we saw yesterday. I don’t blame Girardi for yesterday. Just one of those days. We can have few more.

  28. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 9:38 am

    I was “chapped” to use a Kay word when I found out Wells was hitting behind Arod yesterday.
    Sure enough they walk Soriano and Alex to load the bases and get to Wells in the 1st.
    He took him to 3-2 but went down looking.
    That could have been the game…

    I would have hit the hot Reynolds behind Alex, seemed obvious.

  29. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 9:39 am

    nick,
    No argument from me in re Wells. I said, play your best players, left-right matchups be damned.

  30. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 9:40 am

    sorry, meant “mick”.

    Back when I ran a fan confidence poll here about 2 months ago a slight majority thought we would not make the playoffs.
    That was not the team we have now, of course.

    Would be interesting to take the pulse of LoHud, if we still have one, right now and see what we think.

    I say we do…1-0, Yay-sayers.

  33. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 9:51 am

    Yankee Trader,

    Nice to see you here. Haven’t seen your name in a while. Of course, I’m not around all that often, so maybe I’ve just missed you when you posted.

  37. MTU September 2nd, 2013 at 9:56 am

    There are 4 teams competing for 1 spot.

    That’s the long and the short of it.

    ;)

  38. Wang IS Taiwan September 2nd, 2013 at 9:56 am

    Girardi did pull Pettite more quickly than usual (I would have not have started him in the 7th, but hindsight is 20-20 and all), but he doesn’t seem to be able to grasp that winning now means NO HOLDS BARRED.

  39. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 9:57 am

    Mr. mick,
    Why watch, if you’re “ny” person. Hope springs eternal.

  40. tomingeorgia September 2nd, 2013 at 9:58 am

    Got to walk the Mops.

    Be back.

  42. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 10:00 am

    Really tho. How do you sit both Grandy and Ichiro at a time like this?
    I would say Ichi had the best shot at that cheap Hardy HR aside from what he brings to the plate.
    Also time to get Romine in their as the #1 (can I say that?) as he looks like a different hitter and a tough out these days.
    Friday night was our 1st circular lineup of the year with he and Ichiro at 8 and 9, with Jete and Alex in there for their 1st time together on the field.

  43. Wang IS Taiwan September 2nd, 2013 at 10:01 am

    MTU — will be gone when you get back, but have a good one!

  44. DONNYBROOK September 2nd, 2013 at 10:01 am

    Wells is a flat-out mistake. He was played yesterday only to validate the trade that brought him to the team. Joe Jabroni sits a Healthy Wells vs a LH SP, and he’s announcing that the trade was a Boner. The Yanks get LH SP’s all 3 games vs the W\Sox (see above). We will see what Girardi has learned, and just how far he is willing to go in attempting to cover Cashman’s butt.
    If it’s me, there is No Way I insert Kelley into Any game of consequence. His absolute Best game was that Sunday night vs Boston where he K’d 5, and he did that by consistently throwing his FB inside. Since that game, he has fallen in love with his slider, and to RH batters, it Consistently ends up just below the waist and either on the outside corner or just off the outside corner. In Yankee Stadium this is an absolute Death Sentence, as RH’s either take the walk if the pitch is off the corner, or if a strike, take a shot at the Short Porch, which is what we witnessed yesterday. I 86′d Kelley from our Fantasy League $$$ Teams Immediately after witnessing this slider love affair inna game vs Texas, in which he was Horrible. The Yanks came back to whip Nathan in that game, but Kelley’s love of his predictable slider, (and Texas knowing of this), was obvious. Joe Jabroni using Chamberlain defied logic. Enough said there. If it was me, I woulda pulled Pettitte after allowing 1 hitter to reach in the 7th, and gone with Logan at that point. Sure Logan did Not get an out, but Jabroni waited for the situation to get outta hand before summoning him. You throw a guy into the lions den, and sometimes he’s gonna get eaten. A Big part of a Mgr’s job is to avoid putting any player in this situation.

    ~~~~~~~
    Totally agree, Tom. I would just have put this philosophy into motion about a month ago.
  46. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 10:03 am
    Schedule
    * home games
    *WS 3
    *RS 4
    O’s 4
    RS 3
    Jays 3
    * Giants 3
    * Rays 3
    Astros 3
    If they go 11-3 the next 4 series it certainly might restore fan confidence that there is a chance against the remaining 4 teams on their schedule, to make the playoffs. A sweep v s the WS would be a good start.
  47. Wang IS Taiwan September 2nd, 2013 at 10:06 am
    Here’s the issue for me: it’s one thing for the players to come through, but in order for them to do their very best, Joe has to stop stacking the deck against them. His job is to facilitate a win, not to be an obstacle with his nonsensical line ups and in-game decisions.
  48. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 10:10 am
    Wang
    Good morning, or evening.
    We’re you in Taiwan during Cyclone Soulik? My daughter was visiting a friend there.
    Always nice to hear from you.
  49. DONNYBROOK September 2nd, 2013 at 10:11 am
    I would prefer to be chasing Oakland for that 2nd Playoff slot. Yeah, I know Oakland just beat up Tampa, and the Yanks have no games remaining vs Oakland. The Tampa SP’s, along with Madden coaching the pants off Girardi, has me wanting to be chasing Oakland.
  50. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 10:16 am
    I doubt we are going to make the playoffs, but I watch because I support them, win or lose. Baseball will be over all too soon.
  51. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 10:17 am
    I doubt we are going to make the playoffs, but I watch because I support them, win or lose. Baseball will be over all too soon.
    =====================
    What is your rationale, if I might ask?
  52. Yankee Trader September 2nd, 2013 at 10:18 am
    Will 90 wins get the Yankees into a one game sudden death playoff spot? If so they have to finish 18-8.
    Then does loyal Joe go with CC , Kuroda, or his current ACE- Nova, if all are available?
  53. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 10:20 am
    Same lineup as yesterday except for Romine and Grandy.
    Ichiro sits vs a lefty again….nonsense.
  54. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 10:21 am
    Ichiro is 340 vs leftys.
  55. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 10:22 am
    Mick,
    I have no magic eight ball that tells me how it will turn out. I simply don’t see them winning 75% or more of their games. Maybe they will surprise me. If they do, I will be very happy.
    Jeter and AROD don’t look like the guys we need them to be. Three lefties will be tough on Granderson and Cano.
  56. mick September 2nd, 2013 at 10:23 am
    More nonsense ahead——–>>>>>>>>
  57. austinmac September 2nd, 2013 at 10:23 am
    The RAB confidence poll always asks about the future. I don’t see it as a poll of their chances this year. It seems more of a long term question to me.
    Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
    Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
