Red Sox complete sweep against reeling Yankees

Ivan Nova

The Red Sox honored Mariano Rivera pregame. Then beat the Yankees so badly that there was no reason for Rivera to actually pitch. A 9-2 loss completed a three-game weekend sweep against the Red Sox. The Yankees have lost seven of their past 11, leaving them unable to capitalize on the late struggles of both the Rangers and Rays. They’re still three games out of the wild card, now with only 12 games to play. Ivan Nova struggled (again), the bullpen let things get out of hand (again), and Alex Rodriguez had to be pulled mid-game (again). This time is a tight right calf for Rodriguez, quite possibly connected to the left hamstring injury that he’d been dealing with this week. The Yankees scored their one run in the first inning and were held to four hits the rest of the way. The Red Sox got five runs off Nova, then added on against a string of relievers.
