Magic: Cano will get paid, but not by the Dodgers

Robinson Cano, David RossHow can I pass up the opportunity to quote Magic?

Before last night’s National League division series opener in Atlanta, Dodgers partial owner Magic Johnson — of the Lakers — acknowledged that Robinson Cano is in a position to get a huge contract this winter, but he said it won’t come from the Dodgers.

“You already know that guy in New York is going to be paid,” Johnson said. “Not by us. But he’s going to get paid.”

Get ready for a lot of stuff like this. It might be perfectly true that the Dodgers have no intention of going after Cano. It might be completely false. It might be that the Dodgers will be able to trade away one of their excess outfielders and then join the Cano bidding. But it’s at least interesting that baseball’s newest big spenders are claiming to be out of the Cano sweepstakes.

In other Cano news: It turns out he’s in a dispute over child support.
