George King of the New York Post is reporting that the Yankees are on the verge of a contract extension with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
The news is not much of a surprise. Brian Cashman said last week that, if Joe Girardi were re-signed, the Yankees would likely bring back his entire coaching staff.
“If Girardi comes back I would like to have our coaches back, and I think Girardi feels the same way,” Cashman said. “… There’s no guarantees, on any level, but I thought the staff did a great job, and I have praise for every single one of those guys.”
Well, Girardi is back, so it’s likely a matter of time before the staff is back as well.
That said, King notes that the Yankees are planning to eliminate the advance scout/video coordinator position that’s been filled by Charlie Wonsowicz. That name that might not be familiar, but he’s a guy who seemed very popular with the players in the Yankees clubhouse. King also notes that the Mariners have had internal discussions about interviewing third-base coach Rob Thomson for their managerial opening.
