Former Yankees reliever making an impact in the ALCS

Jose Veras [2]

I was not in Detroit last night, so I missed this remarkable event:

Seriously, before this postseason, did you realize Jose Veras was having such a good season? I knew he’d opened the year as Houston’s closer, and I vaguely remembered that he’d been traded to Detroit, but a 1.07 WHIP? Counted on for 1.2 scoreless innings in a tight playoff game? A highlight video on the big screen?!

Not remotely saying the Yankees made a mistake in letting Veras get away — before this season he’d pretty well established himself as a solid, journeyman type; not a guy you regret losing — but it just goes to show that it’s possible to kind of forget about a guy only to have him show up elsewhere.

I’m sure you know that Mark Melancon was an all-star setup man for the Pirates, but…

Did you know Tyler Clippard had another terrific season for the Nationals (better numbers across the board than Rafael Soriano)? Do you realize Cody Ransom slugged .449 for the Cubs (fourth highest slugging percentage of anyone who played at least 50 games for them)? Did you know Ross Ohlendorf pitched 60.1 solid innings in Washington, that Ramiro Pena hit .278 for the Braves, or that Freddy Guzman was back in the big leagues with the Rays (do you even remember Freddy Guzman)?

Did you know that former Yankees utility infielder Alberto Gonzalez got 34 at-bats this season? For the Yankees!
