CARDINALS (0-1)
Matt Carpenter 2B
Carlos Beltran RF
Matt Holliday LF
Matt Adams 1B
Yadier Molina C
Allen Craig DH
David Freese 3B
Jon Jay CF
Daniel Descalso SS

RHP Michael Wacha (3-0, 0.43 ERA in the postseason)

RED SOX (1-0)
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Shane Victorino RF
Dustin Pedroia 2B
David Ortiz DH
Mike Napoli 1B
Jonny Gomes LF
Jarrod Saltalamacchia C
Stephen Drew SS
Xander Bogaerts 3B

RHP John Lackey (2-0, 3.00 ERA in the postseason)

TIME/TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

BELTRAN BACK IN LINEUP: The Cardinals put Carlos Beltran back in the lineup after he came through batting practice and declared himself ready to play. Beltran bruised his ribs making a catch against the wall last night.

LESTER FACES INTERNET DEBATE: As you might have noticed at some point today, Red Sox starter Jon Lester was wrapped in a bit of controversy today. Video surfaced — originating from a Cardinals minor leaguer, of all people — of Lester using some sort of substance that was in his glove during last night’s game. It seemed to generate more heat online than with the league or with the Cardinals. Manager John Farrell and Lester each said it was resin, which Lester keeps in his glove to deal with sweat.

PREGAME CEREMONY: Mariano Rivera is being honored during a pregame ceremony. James Taylor is playing the National Anthem. Members of the 2004 Red Sox are throwing out the first pitch.

    Trisha-

I think this what you thought you saw in that photo the other day.

Only this is the real deal. He was kind enough to pose for my photograph that day.

    Go Cards!

  3. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

MTU – I can’t open it. I actually got goose bumps when I read the post. I don’t want to see it. But thanks.

  4. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Erin Andrews is a fine looking woman but she sometimes asks some dumb questions.

For example, “How big is that ball looking to you ? Like a beach ball, or a volley ball, etc ?”

    Duh.

    :)

  5. Shame Spencer October 24th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

In 2012 the ‘Boys were worth more, you’re correct there, yanksinsd – it looks like in 2013 the Yankees have leap frogged them. But Manchester United and Real Madrid are ranked higher than the Yankees according to their new rankings.

  6. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

    OK Trisha.

Don’t want you getting any nightmares tonight.

Want you to have sweet dreams after the Sux lose.

    :)

  7. joeman October 24th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

Sox change out catchers..more offense….Cards change out SS I guess more defense

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

    MTU –

Seriously, the fact that I couldn’t even bring myself to open it probably gives you an indication of my level of serious discomfort when it comes to “them”.

  9. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

    COME ON CARDS!!!!!

  10. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

    Trisha-

Lot’s of people feel that way.

    ;)

  11. BrianWilsonsBeard October 24th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

Watching the (New York) Rangers game and switching to the game during intermissions, but really cool for Mo to get that award. Kind of conflicting though, seeing how guys like Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire got that same award too.

  12. TKR October 24th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

James Taylor to perform the national anthem tonight

  13. mick October 24th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

    Sweet Baby James.

  14. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Yeah, I’ve always envisioned James Taylor as the national anthem type.

  15. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 7:54 pm

It’s not cheating in baseball….. unless you get caught. It’s part and parcel of the game, always has been and I hope continues to be.

Just the way it is, like it or lump it.

  16. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Some people want it honest. They really do. Those people refuse to lump it.

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

BWB – did the award ceremony already happen?

  18. TKR October 24th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

RS very tough to beat at home . lean towards them tonight

  19. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

    Must win game Redbirds.

  20. BrianWilsonsBeard October 24th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

According to the twitter feed, Selig gave Mo the award almost 40 minutes ago. Fox probably didn’t bother showing it on TV anyway

  21. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

MTU/Trisha – add me to the list of those that are seriously disturbed by “them”. I found one in my basement about 5 years ago and have yet to fully recover!!! :)

  22. leeteam October 24th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Although WS TV ratings may be doing fine, the Yankees’ absence must have a huge effect on ratings. Not many Yankee fans throughout the world, will want to watch the Red Sox.

Maybe that is why they will be honoring Mo before the game tonight. Kind of odd that they would honor a retiring player at the WS. This may get some Yankee fans to tune in.

  23. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

    Chicken-

It is best not to surprise them.

    :)

    44 degrees at Fenway.

    Nice and toasty.

MLB wants the NYY in the WS every year

  27. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:02 pm

leeteam, I heard that last night’s game was the 3rd lowest in the history of WS ratings. (I think I got that right.)

  28. TKR October 24th, 2013 at 8:03 pm

    BWB – thanks.

chicken – I truly think that if I found one in my basement I’d have to move. I don’t think never being able to sleep again would be good for the health!

Comet thank’s for the heads up on the Inheritance Tax stuff……Joeman, I’m on the Cards for the series as well as tonight’s game. Tin Cup, think Yonkers

  33. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

    Rattlers are generally polite.

    They usually warn.

It’s the other types that really have absolutely no manners.

    ;)

  34. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Gaylord Perry made a HOF career out of doing what Lester was accused of last night.

    Ever hear of Gaylord…. DUH?

Oh no….. another cheater in the HOF

    ——————————————-
went my way because of the home field ..

  36. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Lackey – is one of my least favorite players… I’d love to see him get lit up like a Christmas tree

  37. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

    Okay guys, here we go!

The newly thin and buff (HGH?) Lackey is on the mound.

    Cards should have this game.

  38. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

    “Rattlers are generally polite.

    They usually warn.”

This is true… as I came this close to sitting on one!

  39. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 8:09 pm

MTU – Youre right. I was actually refering to a copperhead. They’re some mean hombres

  40. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:09 pm

    Okay here’s my dream scenario.

Cards take it tonight and then go home and take the next 3 straight.

    COME ON CARDS!!!!

  41. joeman October 24th, 2013 at 8:09 pm

I also have seen that article somewhere…Snakes showing up in toilets

  42. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

    Chicken-

Or more appropriately, run over by a Javelina in heat.

    ;)

  43. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 8:11 pm

    CHicken

Had one of them nasty ones in my backyard recently. I usually believe in leaving all wildlife alone, but not them. Don’t like them at all.

  44. joeman October 24th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

how about this logic …RS win in 6, NYY get pissed that happened and forget about the 189 and go out and sign Fa’s at every position that they need them

  45. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

There’s goes Carlos being Carlos again.

    :)

  46. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Tar – I’m with you. The house I live in sets on about 5 acres of land… I have an gentleman’s agreement with all the copperheads that live there: They are welcome as long as they never ever ever make their existence known to me in any way shape or form. If they do, I’ll be forced to take action

  47. Pat M. October 24th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Joeman.. I went with the slightly dog Cards because I think they are deeper and fundamentally a better ballclub. Although last night didn’t support my premise. Besides I think Boston’s Greenleaf clover is due to wilt somewhat. 3 games in St Louie should take a huge bite out of their fiber

  48. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Speaking of 44 degrees and toasty, although I am loathe to do it in October, I’m going to have to turn on the heat. It is tres froid in this house!

Duh Innings is right. It can’t be too cool for questions about cheating to continue to swirl around one team the way it has the Sux.

  49. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

    Shame on you Chicken.

They don’t even have legs to run away.

    You brute.

  53. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 8:20 pm

Shame – hooray! I was wondering if you would be able to come out and play tonight!

  54. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

    Shame

    LOL NOOOOOOO not again :D

    I must restrain myself.

    MTU

I will let a rattler go the other way, But I see a copperhead, and I’m grabbing a weapon of mass destruction.

  55. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

Wacha is a strike throwing machine.

  56. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:23 pm

    What. Like a bazooka ?

    Or just a hoe.

  63. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:28 pm

    Tar-

Be glad you don’t in Central America where they have Fer De Lance, or Africa where they have Bushmasters.

    Now those are downright scary.

  64. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:28 pm

    Shame – CRYING!!!!!

    Lackluster performance would be nice.

    ;)

  69. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 8:31 pm

    What. Like a bazooka ?”

A shotgun that could double as a bazooka is never very far. :D

Unfortunately I’ve had two that I had to deal with. I have a long handled really sharp shovel that they are really not fond of. I have that same agreement with them that Chicken does.

  70. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Hi Luis – many snakes are more dangerous, very few are more ornery than the copperhead!

  71. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:32 pm

    chicken –

  72. luis October 24th, 2013 at 8:32 pm

    MTU,

You haven’t seen a macagua or a coral…The former is the one that scares me the most…It attacks from the top of the trees down…The coral is quite common in Canaima on the rivers that sorround it…But there are plenty others as scary… Cuaima, traga venado, among others…Not to mention scorpions

  73. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:33 pm

So odd to watch Freese fail with the bases loaded last night (and now this). Remember when he was the hands-down WS hero?

  74. Pat M. October 24th, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Copperheads, Rattlers ??? And to think I was complaining earlier today about the damn seagulls and how they splatter my deck with their contributions. Freeze is frozen and he needs to warm up if The Red Birds are to win this series

  75. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:35 pm

At least the Cards are making contact. That’s always a good sign.

  76. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:35 pm

    Chicken-

Then I guess you’ve never seen a Fer De Lance.

Probably the size of two or three adult copperheads put together and a rep for nasty to go with it.

One of the most deadly snakes in the World and also most feared.

  77. Tar October 24th, 2013 at 8:36 pm

  78. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:39 pm

    Luis-

That is why I am always glad when you return safely from the bush.

You have all manner of nasty in those parts.

Some very harmful and scary critters.

    It’s exciting though, no ?

You have some Indiana Jones in you amigo.

    :)

  79. BrianWilsonsBeard October 24th, 2013 at 8:43 pm

How’s our Cards doing? Could be worse than scoreless, I suppose. It’s amazing how much hate the Cards get though. Baseball fans I’ve talked to, websites like deadspin, people just don’t seem to like them at all. I don’t get it.

  80. MTU October 24th, 2013 at 8:43 pm

    Hey luis.

Why not give Maduro one of those for a present ?

It would make him a nice gift don’t you think.

    ;)

  81. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 8:44 pm

Luis – You’re correct, I’ve never seen one but I’ll take your word for it… If they’re meaner than a copperhead (and they sound as though they are) then they are scary indeed.

  84. luis October 24th, 2013 at 8:49 pm

    MTU,

We have plenty of them right here in Caracas…rattle snakes and plenty of alacranes (scorpions )…So there isn’t that much difference between the bush and the city down here…Maybe they are a little more shy on the city…I hope he stomps in to one (Maduro)

    Chicken,

I forgot to mention that we call our women “Cuaimas” because they are as ferocious as the snake ;) We have plenty of really scary stuff down here…I forgot about the black widow as well…That’s a mean spider

  85. TheStraw October 24th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Great article in SI today on the Cards 2009 draft. Believe it or not, it could have been better. they passed on Trout to get Shelby Miller.

  86. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:56 pm

And then there’s Shane’s bath tub fixture, Pinocchio, telling the other fixtures in the neighborhood that Shane can definitely hit whatever Wacha throws!

  89. luis October 24th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

So far Lackey is not lacking…He better start

  90. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 8:59 pm

  92. luis October 24th, 2013 at 9:01 pm

    JRam i think

  93. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Luis – since you’re obviously alive and apparently in good health, I’m assuming “Cuaimas” is muttered under your breath :D

  94. Hankflorida October 24th, 2013 at 9:01 pm

I once mentioned that I used to go to Dexter Park in Brooklyn to watch the Bushwicks play, and they played against a barnstorming team called the House of David whose monicker was that they played with beards that were both real and fake. The House of David was equivalent to watching a circus with nine clowns playing baseball. Like Pavlov’s Dog, I was conditioned to differentiate the clean shaven players from the clowns, and with that said, I am truly a Yankee fan in more ways then one.

  95. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 9:04 pm

Hank – good to see you on. Hope you’re doing well.

  96. luis October 24th, 2013 at 9:04 pm

Of course Chicken!! Otherwise we wouldn’t be having this conversation ;)

  97. jmills October 24th, 2013 at 9:05 pm

  100. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 9:08 pm

Hi jmills! haven’t heard the term “road hockey”. You’ve got to remember I’m from the south – I hadn’t heard of hockey until I was 18! :D

  101. luis October 24th, 2013 at 9:09 pm

  106. jmills October 24th, 2013 at 9:12 pm

  111. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 9:15 pm

Gomer thought he had the hops to jump up and catch that chopper. Guess what Gomer – Surprise!, Surprise!, Surprise!

  112. blake October 24th, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Boy that was a nice play by Drew….tricky hop….zero margin for error. Plays like that separate guys that can play SS from ones that can’t…..you bobble balls for a split second at short and runners are safe

  113. jmills October 24th, 2013 at 9:17 pm

    Gomer,….lord have mercy.

  114. yankinvegas October 24th, 2013 at 9:17 pm

We were eating some seafood at an early dinner celebrating my wife’s birthday. On the TV in the restaurant I heard Vasgersian on FOX talking about how this postseason has only enhanced Ortiz’ credentials.
    Why and how?
The man was on the list. There’s no way the sanctimonious, holier than thou members of BBWAA will ever vote for him, right?
If he gets in, given those who haven’t and maybe won’t, the whole thing is a sham.

  115. JobaTipsHisCap October 24th, 2013 at 9:18 pm

True dat. The only journalist who has had the “audacity” to question the king of milkshakes is Dan Shaughnessey. And he got a ration of crap for doing it. Probably why John Henry just bought the Boston Globe…

  120. blake October 24th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

  122. jmills October 24th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

I was up in an,…..attic; no doubt, Gwen. An old one at that. Carlos came to the plate and Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth and me knew Delgado was going to happily end it with his 4th.

  123. chicken_stanley October 24th, 2013 at 9:24 pm

Boy that was a nice play by Drew….tricky hop….zero margin for error. Plays like that separate guys that can play SS from ones that can’t…..you bobble balls for a split second at short and runners are safe

    ———————-

I don’t think many people have a true appreciation for how good these guys are. Case in point: I played ball thru high school and Junior College – not a great player but I prided myself on my hands.

Skip forward to the first MLB game I ever attended – Atlanta vs Pitt in Ron Gant’s Rookie year. If you’ll remember, Gant came up as a 2nd baseman but he was considered a defensive liability (he had frying pan hands). Well, I saw Gant taking grounders prior to the game and he had far and away softer hands than I could ever hope to have. It really made an impression on me. MLB players are truly elite

  124. blake October 24th, 2013 at 9:24 pm

I usually don’t buy in to the Boston bias stuff but when you look at the way Arod was treated in 2009 vs they way Ortiz was treated it’s really hilarious……both guys failed the same test at the same time and you’d think Arod killed somebody and literally nobody cares or even acknowledges that Ortiz ever even was involved…….

  125. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 9:24 pm

HARDEE HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR!!!

And that’s what tough pitching will do for ya.

Lackey was miked during the last inning and when that ball went over his head, he turned to Pedroia and said “golly gee!”

  126. jmills October 24th, 2013 at 9:26 pm

It had to be about 2003. Delgado 4 in one game. Otto Velez ( you would know him ) I think had five homers in a double header vs Cleveland.

Oh they are incredible…..that play I was talking about is really tough and Drew and most big league SSs do that in their sleep and make it look easy. We talk a lot as fans about certain players sucking etc but it’s all relative……pretty much even the worst big leaguers are incredible baseball players

  128. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 9:28 pm

blake, I’ve had Sux fans tell me they absolutely believe that Ortiz is juicing and has been since he hit fenway. Yet you listen to the “fenway faithful” when a player goes there who’s been caught juicing, and they are relentlessly horrid.

Thanks! Played golf three times this week so am feeling fine. I continue to read the posts but am really waiting for the chess game to begin and the comments to follow.
I once mentioned that the Red Sox have two fans who were always at the Yankee games in Boston; one was the blonde guy with hair parted in the middle sitting behind the catcher and the other the guy with the ear phones sitting to the right. When I got back to Florida and watched some Redsox games playing other teams in September, they were still there. I wonder if there are dedicated fans at the Stadium who show up for every game like these two?

chicken – HGH is a well known supplement, certainly nothing new and certainly nothing hidden. It really is meant for people who have a specific hormone deficiency and has a lot of risk involved with it, including tumor formation and bleeding into the brain.

It appears the MLB knows what it is doing and the populace at large has its head up its proverbial arse. Nothing at all new. The fact that it has anti-aging properties is little comfort when compared to the harm it can cause. And of course, the side effects show up after its use, not during its use.

“ortiz has been better than any yankee batters in last 10 yrs’ post season.”

BFD. Bonds and Clemens were the bomb too…

“They had to win both of these games with guarenteed losses looming in games 3 and 4″

    Why guaranteed losses?

  220. JobaTipsHisCap October 24th, 2013 at 10:10 pm

    Cards are done.

These Cardinal hitters for the most part look like they have taken a laxative or something.

This is their best w their backs to the wall ?

  225. Pat M. October 24th, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Cup. Ortiz is making a case for himself as one of the premier October hitters, he’s not the guy you want to face in close games or if the game is on the line. That pitch was in and on his hands and up in the zone and he muscled it out over the pinball wall in left. Wrning track flyball in Bugsh

  226. JobaTipsHisCap October 24th, 2013 at 10:12 pm

I don’t care MLB players get juiced or not.
as long as they win and they dont get caught, I am ok with it.

    world series

    this is good baseball

i instinctively root against the red sox, but if they win another series i think it’ll pressure the yankees to get good quicker.

the yankees will have to respond.
if the cardinals win the series, not so much pressure on the yanks.

  234. BrianWilsonsBeard October 24th, 2013 at 10:17 pm

JobaTipsHisCap, Couldn’t disagree more. I’ve heard the argument of just letting all players get roided up and just be done with it. More home runs, more offense in general, faster pitches, what’s not to love, right? But some players are smart enough not to ruin their bodies like that. Why punish guys who are trying to compete using their natural God-given talents and work ethic? It’s an unbalanced playing field, and entertainment or not, it’s unacceptable.

  235. JobaTipsHisCap October 24th, 2013 at 10:17 pm

  237. Duh Innings II October 24th, 2013 at 10:20 pm

What if the Yanks did this in this order?

    Signed Tanaka for six years x $10M a year = $60M.

    Re-signed Kuroda for a year and $16M.

Traded Nuno, Phelps, Warren, Cervelli, and Sanchez to the White Sox for Chris Sale (Romine and Murphy share catching duties in 2014 or Romine backs up McCann or whoever the Yanks sign to be the catcher.)

    Signed Max Scherzer after 2014.

    2014 rotation: Sabathia/Sale/Kuroda/Tanaka/Pineda.

2015-18 rotation: Scherzer/Sabathia/Sale/Tanaka/TBD (Sabathia re-signed for 2017-18 to be the fourth or fifth starter.)

The Yanks front four is set for the next half decade and all they gave up was five players.

Scherzer and Tanaka anchor the 2019 rotation. Maybe Sale or Sabathia comes back or both come back.

Randy – my theory is to root with your heart… if you want the Sox to lose, root for the Cards. If you want the Sox to win, root for them. Trying to anticipate how one team’s success or failure will affect the Yankees is, in my opinion, an effort in futility. After all, the Yankees over the last few years have responded to to external stimuli in a totally unpredicable manner.

it goes against everything i’ve rooted for in my life but i really think the red sox winning would put pressure on hal to snap out of the denial he’s in.

if the red sox win another world series, hal’s life gets a lot more uncomfortable.

for us yankee fans, hal being uncomfortable is a good thing.

maybe it’s the one thing to put the pressure on him to change the 189 mandate

As you’ve pointed out so many times and very clearly that Hal was gifted this sports money making machine. He’s a bow tied CPA / CFO type guy rather than a smart baseball owner. To make matters worse he’s being led around by this mook Randy Levine. I wonder how things would shaken out if Hank didn’t blink on the A-Rod showdown back in the winter of 09

“randy, don’t force me to try to figure out how to scour the archives and find all your posts saying the Yankees could make the postseason if this and if that.”

actually i did say they’d get 91 wins and be 50/50 to make the playoffs and that i thought their pitching would give them a chance.

losing 5 games to injuries to granderson and teixeira took away for the 91 wins.

so i feel pretty good about my pre season predictions.

  377. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 24th, 2013 at 11:21 pm

“Momentum shifts back to the cards…..if Buttholtz is hurt then the cards win the series”

blake – I heard Pedro Martinez interviewed by the WEEI guys late this afternoon and they were asking about the Chucky doll. Pedro came right out and said that if Chucky is hurt he has to give the ball to the Sux and take care of himself. He said that it’s not worth jeopardizing his career because he’s a young man with a lot of years left to pitch.

I think what Pedro was saying is that Chucky shouldn’t be selfish and go out there and try to pitch because he wants the ball, because it could hurt the Sux. I don’t think he truly gives a rat’s ass about Chucky’s career. I think that was all window dressing! But Pedro really put it right on the line there.

the cardinals really seem to be doing something right. the world series on under 120 million?

    here’s something interesting:
“But this World Series doesn’t feature a single player earning one of the top 25 salaries in the league.”
    http://www.csmonitor.com/Busin.....ls-rosters

so maybe the 189 mandate isn’t such a bad idea for the yankees? in the long run maybe no. but in the short run with the legacy contracts i don’t see how it will work.

losing a lifelong rooting interest in the yankees ( yes, i really rooted against them all year) may seem extreme but it turns me into more of a baseball fan. i’m not going to stop following baseball because i don’t like what hal is doing with the yankees.

i suspect that a lot of other yankee fans will be doing the same. right now the cardinals are the team of interest.how do they do what they do?

  403. blake October 25th, 2013 at 7:12 am

“the cardinals really seem to be doing something right. the world series on under 120 million?”

They just crush it in the draft…..and they develop players. 18 of the guys on this WS roster are home grown…..that not only keeps you young….if offsets your payroll so if you need that expensive FA piece you can go get it.

They are just a finely tuned machine…..and lets not forget the best bat in the minors (Oscar Taveras) is a Cardinal and probably will be up next year

  404. 86w183 October 25th, 2013 at 7:26 am

    Good morning all —-

I remember an article backup around 1998 which pointed out the Yanks had the top payroll but none of the top 10 or 15 individual salaries. The best way to be great without spending a fortune is avoiding mega contracts and that, as Blake points out it highly dependent on player development.

I understand the desire to get to $ 189 and the frustration that must come with giving MLB about $ 70 M a year in revenue sharing + luxury taxes, but if the Yanks really are worth $ 3.2 BILLION then it seems more than a little miserly.

It would be like me refusing to repair a leaky roof because of the cost. It might not rain, but a big storm could seriously damage the value of my property.

  405. Doreen October 25th, 2013 at 7:42 am

    Morning.

Glad to see the Cardinals end up with the win last night. Getting out of Fenway can only help them.

Juiced or not, Ortiz’ ability to come up with the big hit time after time can’t be denied or ignored. My gripe is if he s juicing, or HGH-ing, the fact that no one seems to care, and there is definitely a double standard in the entire PED ” war” where the ones who are pursued most aggressively by MLB are the players who are the least likable.

The Yankees’ players development seems to stall either in AA or AAA. I wonder if it could be as simple as valuing wins and/or minor league titles? I need to take a look to see how the Cardinals’ minor league teams do in the standings. Maybe it’s nothing. But season before last, the Yankees AAA team was a championship team in spite of having no home field. You would think that at the very least , a team that can accomplish that has some players with “heart” or perseverance. That’s not a bad thing. So what happened in 2013? And the 2013 AA team, also in spite of having some injuries to deal with to key players, was a championship team. And yet it appears not a single one of those playres is particularly close to helping the parent club.

  406. blake October 25th, 2013 at 7:45 am

Being in the NL park now is a pretty big disadvantage for Boston……not only are they out of their playhouse (Fenway) but they will have to play without one of their best hitters…..whether it be Ortiz or Napoli.

Ortiz will probably play 1B and I expect the cards to attack him there

  407. blake October 25th, 2013 at 7:45 am

If the Yankees developed players like St Louis does then they’d be unstoppable

  408. 86w183 October 25th, 2013 at 7:50 am

To me the biggest difference is the Cards seem to move players more quickly, challenging them at the next level if they are dominant where they are.

The Yanks move players along very slowly and, frankly I think it stifles their growth and bores them into mediocrity. Jagielo for example should never have been sent to Staten Island. He dominated early, got bored and stopped hitting.

  409. 86w183 October 25th, 2013 at 7:53 am

I mean, seriously is there any way the Yanks would EVER slot a 22-year old into the rotation within a year of drafting him???

    Nope!

  410. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:00 am

“I mean, seriously is there any way the Yanks would EVER slot a 22-year old into the rotation within a year of drafting him???”

to be fair though I don’t think they have had a guy like Wacha in a long time……maybe they’ll get to draft their Wacha this year…

  411. Doreen October 25th, 2013 at 8:01 am

    86w183,

Yet I’ve read they promote some guys too early and then it takes time for them to adjust to the next level.

Probably a little of both happens.

Obviously, it’s not an exact science, but some tweaking is definitely in order.

  412. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:02 am

I do agree though that the Yanks drag their feet sometimes moving players…..but I think to some degree that’s because the players they have actually need more work.

It’s a really hard thing to gauge…..the Cards are just the best at drafting and developing players right now. The Rays do a great job with pitching but lack in position players and bullpen help……the Cards do it all…..the develop everyday players, starters, and lock down bullpen guys…..it seems like they have 10 guys in their pen that throw 95+

  413. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:04 am

If Bucholtz can’t pitch or can’t pitch effectively then I see this series going back to Boston with the Cards having a 3-2 lead…….then it’ll come down to whether or not they can win a game at Fenway again.

Fenway is such an advantage for Boston……the crowd, the way they hit in that park etc……St. Louis splitting there was huge and really swings the momentum and odds in their favor IMO

  414. Doreen October 25th, 2013 at 8:05 am

And Blake is right. They don’t have any players forcing their hand.

They did quick promote Joba and Kennedy. And Hughes. Without rehashing all that, it didnt go as planned in a couple of ways.

    I don’t eat grains – unless gluten-free at a restaurant.

DUDE – speaking of gluten free grains – you MUST try FARM BURGER in Asheville off Patton. They serve grass-fed beef burgers, even the eggs are from pastured hens raised locally. The food is phenomenal. I went on 2 dates there already this week. I’m heading there with a buddy of mine Saturday night, then to Tressa’s. Anyways, you can build your own burger.

i’m really not up on what the testing is for HGH in baseball. i agree even if it’s healthy thing in life extension way, it’s not fair to have some do it and not others. the litte reading i’ve done on HGH say there’s no strength performance increase. no maybe i read that wrong. i’m assuming HGH would be taken for body repair rather than strength building. don’t now if the’s right.

but anyway, what is theHGH testing policy? anyone know?

The bacon is also local, humanly raised, pastured. You can get a mean bacon cheeseburger. The thing that sucks is the fries are cooked in canola oil – which is high in omega-6. They should use beef tallow. There’s a startup catering service here where the owner is trying to raise funds for a food truck. He makes his fries cooked in beef tallow from local pastured beef. It’s a paleo diet themed service that sets up outside CrossFit gyms.

    Here’s the guy..

yeah bret, what’s up with so many people into organic and no GMOs using canola oil?
    that seems like a disconnect.

  426. 86w183 October 25th, 2013 at 8:24 am

Almost all PEDs are body replenishment aids. Steroids and HGH do NOT make you stronger in and of themselves. They allow you to recover more quickly, thus letting you work out more often, with more weight for longer periods of time.

Without the work, the PED would accomplish virtually nothing.

HGH and Testosterone are used medically as legal anti-aging substances. The older the athlete, the greater benefit (proportionally) to be derived.

A stud 25-year-old is probably legit. A stud 35-year-old almost certainly is not.

  427. Bret The Hitman October 25th, 2013 at 8:26 am

    Randy,

They should at least use coconut oil.

Asheville is freaking rocking though on the local foods movement. It’s the mecca, my friends. I just stopped at a cafe yesterday before getting my hair cut and they sell chocolate bars from nearby Black Mountain, NC. They don’t use milk. They don’t use soy!!! even as an emulsifier. They use sunflower lecithin. Unreal. Good luck finding a candy bar that doesn’t use soy!!!

  428. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:27 am

“DUDE – speaking of gluten free grains – you MUST try FARM BURGER in Asheville off Patton. ”

I’ve heard of that and have been wanting to check it out…..Tupelo Honey is one of my favorite places to eat in Asheville…..tried it yet?

  429. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:28 am

Black Mountain is a neat little town too…..there is a pizza place there called My Father’s Pizza that I love

  430. Doreen October 25th, 2013 at 8:30 am

Randy, my impression is that the players who dabbled in HGH have done so to promote faster healing.

I thought you needed a blood test to test for HGH, but I’m not sure if this testing is being done yet in MLB. I thought i heard it was, but I am not positive Seems the evidence for HGH use is anecdotal, like the Biogenesis records.

  431. Bret The Hitman October 25th, 2013 at 8:30 am

    Blake,

Now that you mention it, lady at the cafe yesterday where I got some South African rooibos tea recommended it!!! She said they use local grass-fed from Hickory Nut Gap Farms. I love that farm!

Maybe Saturday night I will try to persuade my buddy to try Tupelo Honey since I’ve been to Farm Burger twice already. Or I can just take my next date there. The one I really like is a college professor, 29, really cute and smart from Raleigh.

Sounds like a great day for all of you. Enjoy!!

  433. austinmac October 25th, 2013 at 8:32 am

    Randy,

It is my understanding HGH can only be detected in blood. I am not sure the union has agreed yet to blood testing. Of they have, it was this year.

  434. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:35 am

I think pretty much most of the food at Tupelo is locally grown and organic…..the pecan crusted chicken is good and their breakfast stuff is amazing.

  435. blake October 25th, 2013 at 8:36 am

    Bret,
and I know you’ve said you’re picky about your seafood so try the lobster trap sometime and let me know how it measures up…..I love it

  436. Bret The Hitman October 25th, 2013 at 8:37 am

    Oh GAWD that sounds good.

  437. 86w183 October 25th, 2013 at 8:39 am

They are working on a urine test for HGH but I’m not sure it’s been approved by the MLBPA yet. I actually expect this bio-genesis controversy to backfire on MLB because of the massive number of suspensions without positive tests.

One of the issues with HGH testing that is rarely discussed is that every man has HGH and Testosterone in his body and the level varies, so without baseline testing you really can’t prove why a count might be elevated.

I sympathize with the horrible health crisis Michael Weiner is going thru, but the players’ interests are being ignored these days.

  438. Doreen October 25th, 2013 at 8:50 am

Blood testing started this year in MLB, and the CBA was amended to allow it:

another good place in Asheville is called “The Admiral” . it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been there and unless they have gotten a new building it looks like a total dump on the outside…..but inside the food is exceptional…..and the only reason the building sucks is most likely because these are young guys just getting started. They only have like maybe 5 or 6 tables so you have to get reservations but it’s some of the best food out I’ve had in the area.

    Good Morning.

The Cards did what they absolutely needed to do.

Some have asked why we do not have arms like the Cards ?

We do. Several of them. But they haven’t reached the majors yet.

    Examples: Banuelos, J-Ram, DePaula.

Those guys are also younger and less advanced when we draft them.

It’s easier to develop more polished college types.

Joba was such but his arm flamed out and he doesn’t have the proper mentality.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

This design is steller! You obviously know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the internet the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
