Cano named Gold Glove finalist (no other Yankees chosen)

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 25, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Robinson CanoRobinson Cano is the only Yankees finalist for a Gold Glove. Three finalists at each position were announced today by Rawlings. The entire Tampa Bay infield is nominated, as were two of the three outfielders in Boston, Baltimore, Oakland and Kansas City. The Orioles lead the way with six finalists.

The biggest Yankees snub seems to be center fielder Brett Gardner, but his defensive metrics are not particularly overwhelming. Of course, neither are Adams Jones, who was named as a finalist. Just based on watching, I think I’d put Gardner more or less on par with the three players chosen by Rawlings, but I also fully believe that defensive impact is very difficult to measure.

Here’s the full list of American League Gold Glove finalists.

“If Alex gets suspended for 100 games or less, this still ends up looking like a loss for MLB.”

I personally don’t care how this looks for either of the parties involved. All I want to see is justice according to the evidence.

“…. wouldn’t the arbitrator have to do research on the evidence before making any conclusions? Man, this could take forever.”

That’s where the weight of the evidence would come in. The arbitrator would want to track it back to its original source and if there is a way to have it documented as unblemished, he would want to do that.

    ————–

I just wonder how deep the arbitrator can/will dig here.. I dunno that the original documents exist since MLB couldn’t get them (and apparently they tried to very much).

Could this thing drag on for months based on an investigation of the evidence…??

  3. blake October 25th, 2013 at 3:05 pm

    no Chris Stewart!! the outrage

  4. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 25th, 2013 at 3:06 pm

I would think that Robby is a shoe-in for the GG

    ********************

Shame – what exactly did someone (Jones?) turn over to MLB? I have to admit that I haven’t been following this much since it went to arbitration because all that is left is for the arbitrator to rule.

And who is Jones, and how did he get whatever it is?

  5. Shame Spencer October 25th, 2013 at 3:07 pm

There’s no way he gets off clean.. if he did the other players suspended would probably throw a fit.. but MLB may have messed this up. For this to be an MLB victory, they need him to be gone for a full season.

  6. Shame Spencer October 25th, 2013 at 3:08 pm

trisha – This article pat posted earlier kinda sums it up: http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/st.....-documents

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 25th, 2013 at 3:10 pm

I doubt it will drag on for months. If the only issue at hand dealt with what was being turned over, it might be more dicey. But my understanding is that there are several charges being leveled. If the stolen evidence deals with Boesch, the arbitrator could decide that there is credibility based on all of the other Boesch suspensions that were accepted and the players who came out and admitted. And if Arod decides not to testify – his right – the arbitrator would have to decide based solely on what is out there informationally, and in frot of him.

I hope he’s getting paid well for this horror show!

  8. Shame Spencer October 25th, 2013 at 3:10 pm

According to an interview Fischer did, it was evidence that tied players to Biogenesis that – oddly enough – I believe he said he basically stole. This stolen evidence was stolen from his car. Jones bought it, and filmed the transaction with MLB, but claims he didn’t steal it from Fischer and doesn’t know who did.

Adam Jones is a vastly overrated defensive player. Gardner is a better LF than CF.

Since team A-Rod says it needs at least a week to present it’s case, my guess is they’ll finish around Thanksgiving with a verdict for Christmas.

“We wish you a Merry Christmas, you’re suspended one year!”

  11. mick October 25th, 2013 at 3:12 pm

you can have your own post removed?
how and why is that done?

  12. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 25th, 2013 at 3:15 pm

“According to a police report, Jones told a Boca Raton police investigator that he “did not steal anything from anyone and did not break into Fischer’s car … he did not see or have any information related to the burglary.” Jones also told the investigator that he had not spoken with Rodriguez or MLB officials. Attempts to reach Jones by “Outside the Lines” this week were unsuccessful.”

Shame, this looks like a big he said, she said.

I don’t see anything in that article that verifies anything at all, just allegations and denials.

“you can have your own post removed?
how and why is that done?”

I don’t think anyone had her or his own post removed. I think a post was removed and what was said about it being removed was said in a manner of speaking and in a jocular way.

That said, I’m sure someone could ask to have her or his own post removed if the person felt there was good reason to do it. All you’d do is email Chad and ask him to remove it.

I never listen to sports talk radio since I’m not a fan of any of the Chicago teams.

For the most part, I listen to my iPod in mar car.

Chad has ben removing inflammatory posts for a while. It’s actually a very good thing since those posts do nothing to add to the purpose of a baseball forum but only tend to sidetrack it.

Well, it confirms that MLB bought evidence in cash (since Jones has the video of that) and that it had sketchy origins.

Would pay to see that Jones video lol.. I wonder if he used Google Glasses.

“no Chris Stewart!! the outrage” …. and the umbrage.

how can a team be built around pitching, but not around defense at the same time.

both are equally important for run prevention.

one more reason why the present management make little sense.

  25. pat October 25th, 2013 at 3:26 pm

    Shame
I want to know what evidence/documents were offered to Randy Levine that he declined to buy and if he reported it to MLB?

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 25th, 2013 at 3:26 pm

“Well, it confirms that MLB bought evidence in cash (since Jones has the video of that) and that it had sketchy origins.”

From the article that was posted there is nothing that says Jones has any video.

Are there previous reports where he has admitted to having that video, and have independent sources verified that? Again, I haven’t been keeping up with all of the extracurricular articles.

  27. mick October 25th, 2013 at 3:27 pm

Well Shame Victorino seems to be enjoying Arod’s Theater of the Absurd.

  28. Shame Spencer October 25th, 2013 at 3:29 pm

trisha: “ESPN New York’s Wallace Matthews reported Wednesday on two payments made by Rodriguez associates and Major League Baseball related to the allegedly stolen documents: that MLB officials paid $150,000 for the documents, and that A-Rod associates paid Jones $200,000 for a video he had made of MLB officials paying him for the records. Rodriguez has tried during his ongoing arbitration hearing regarding his 211-game suspension to show that MLB has tainted the evidence-gathering process against him.”

MLB and Arod paid the same guy lol.

Over the course of the season pitching and defense gets overlooked but not so much in the post season.

Lack of defense was responsible for both losses in the WS.

  31. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 25th, 2013 at 3:32 pm

  39. blake October 25th, 2013 at 3:44 pm

“how can a team be built around pitching, but not around defense at the same time.”

ask Detroit…..best rotation in baseball…..probably the worst defense. Of course their rotation strikes out tons of guys so that helps.

  40. sammiejohnson October 25th, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Still hard to believe that Detroit went into the season with that good of offense, that good of a rotation, and nothing at the back of the bullpen. I was sure that the one no-brainer move at the TDL was Detroit getting themselves a closer and moving Beniot back to his spot in the 8th inning. Not doing so cost the Tigers’ big in the ALCS.

  41. blake October 25th, 2013 at 3:51 pm

bit them in the back side too…..only reason Boston won that series was because of how bad Detroit’s pen was …..well that and that Miggy was hurt and Fielder disappeared (hows that contract looking right now…yikes)

  42. randy l. October 25th, 2013 at 3:52 pm

hey did i miss much today?

so are the red sox still cheating, alex still evil, and the yankees still missing the playoffs because of injuries?

also has karma landed on anyone yet?
it’s so confusing adding up all the plus and negative karma :)

  43. sammiejohnson October 25th, 2013 at 3:58 pm

Two years ago people were arguing which one would be the better deal, Albert or Prince. Now people are arguing which is the worst contract between the two. If I had to pick I’d say Pujols’ deal looks worse right now, but not by much.

Be very aware of the dangers of any more long term deals, Mr. Cashman.

  44. randy l. October 25th, 2013 at 4:02 pm

“Be very aware of the dangers of any more long term deals, Mr. Cashman.”

yup, read last night that neither team in the world series had any players in the top 25 paid players in the game.

  45. blake October 25th, 2013 at 4:07 pm

“Two years ago people were arguing which one would be the better deal, Albert or Prince. Now people are arguing which is the worst contract between the two. If I had to pick I’d say Pujols’ deal looks worse right now, but not by much.”

Prince is at least healthy and is a few years younger too…..both are bad but I’d rather have Fielder I guess.

  46. blake October 25th, 2013 at 4:08 pm

I’d rather have Prince and his contract right now than Tex and his…..

  47. blake October 25th, 2013 at 4:09 pm

In recent history all the WS teams have this in common…..really good bullpens. It’s become pretty vital to win in October.

  48. sammiejohnson October 25th, 2013 at 4:15 pm

“I’d rather have Prince and his contract right now than Tex and his….”

It’s close. Right now though, Tex has only three years left on his deal while Prince has SEVEN years left on his.

  49. randy l. October 25th, 2013 at 4:19 pm

“Tex has only three years left on his deal …”

that’s the most encouraging thing i’ve heard today.

there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

  50. blake October 25th, 2013 at 4:20 pm

“It’s close. Right now though, Tex has only three years left on his deal while Prince has SEVEN years left on his.”

true but Prince is only 29 and is a much better bet to bounce back and actually be good again. In 3 years the Yanks might be in a better position to absorb the rest of Prince’s deal…..Tex’s is just crushing them in the present.

Fielder just had the worst year of his career by far and still put up a 120 OPS+…..Tex hasn’t done that since 2011.

  51. blake October 25th, 2013 at 4:22 pm

Prince’s issue this year was that he didn’t hit RHP like he usually does……he had an exact even split at .819 OPS vs both. He actually hit for better avg vs LHP.

Prince has always murdered RHP…..he hit .328 with a 1.017 OPS vs RHP in 2012 so I’d expect he will be better in 2014.

He could be entering a decline but his swing is a lot better than Tex’s is.

  52. sammiejohnson October 25th, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Yes, Fielder has a much better chance of bouncing back and maybe even being worth his contract (sort of) for say the next three years. Then Detroit will have to absorb those last four years of probable decline. The Yankees’ are already absorbing Tex’s decline.

  53. blake October 25th, 2013 at 4:34 pm

“Then Detroit will have to absorb those last four years of probable decline. The Yankees’ are already absorbing Tex’s decline.”

    1) we don’t know that he will decline as sharply as Tex has…..we know for sure Tex is declining fast.
    2) the Yankees would have time to prepare for those last 4 years or extra 4 years while getting better production now…..plus Arod and Sabathia would be almost off the books by then.

Neither is good……and the shorter of bad might make the most sense but I could make a case for rather having Prince despite that.

  54. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 4:38 pm

    Blake-

Got a BBQ question for you or Tom.

Ever hear of a place called “Dickey’s” ?

    Any good ?

They just opened up in my small town and I might finally be able to get my fix at long last.

  55. Shame Spencer October 25th, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Arod, CC and Tex all come off the books after the 2016 season, right?

I think CC will still be okay by then. Not your top dog anymore but still a solid pitcher that you know will give you innings.

The next three years with Tex and Arod will be an adventure.. It’s going to be a batter between who can stay on the field and be more (or less, depending on your standpoint lol) productive.

  56. J. Alfred Prufrock October 25th, 2013 at 4:45 pm

There’s a major difference between not locking up 1B even great
Hitting ones – and thinking you can just
    Allow
The glue of your infield to walk.

The comp rather spectacularly ignores that Cano is the best 2B In MLB and a GG defender.

  57. jacksquat October 25th, 2013 at 4:45 pm

Could be 7 more years of decline from Prince, with Tex you know it’s only 3.

  58. J. Alfred Prufrock October 25th, 2013 at 4:47 pm

UnKnown – you rock! Nick in SF called it right: you’re a great Yankee fan. :)

  60. sammiejohnson October 25th, 2013 at 4:51 pm

“Arod, CC and Tex all come off the books after the 2016 season, right?”

Tex comes off the books after 2016.
    Arod is signed through 2017.
CC is signed through 2016 & has a pretty easy vesting option for 2017.

  61. Shame Spencer October 25th, 2013 at 4:59 pm

  64. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:16 pm

“Could be 7 more years of decline from Prince, with Tex you know it’s only 3.”

it’s a fair point but we don’t know that there will be 7 more years of decline with Prince…..what if he bounced back and OPS’s .900 for the next 4 years? He had a .940 OPS in 2012.

    Neither option is great…..

  65. tomingeorgia October 25th, 2013 at 5:16 pm

    Mister MTU,
Never heard of “Dickey’s”, or any other chain BBQ places I’ve liked. The best places are local, run by the founder or his progeny, and around here, only open from Thursday through Saturday. They do three or four pigs a week the old fashioned way. The best whole pig cooker around here is Miss Lizzie Thomas, who’s 78 years old, with a pit in her back yard. Doesn’t do it much anymore, but always calls me the day before she does, and I’m there the next morning.

  66. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:19 pm

Whole hog is the pinnacle of bbq…..alas it would take a tiny hog to fit on the green egg.

  68. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 5:23 pm

    Thanks guys.

    I’ll let you know.

But I am sure my standards are way lower than yours.

You two being experts and all.

    :)

  69. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:24 pm

I’m no expert…..as I said yesterday I wanted brisket so bad I got a brisket sandwich from Arbys.

  70. tomingeorgia October 25th, 2013 at 5:25 pm

    blake,
I could get about a 90 pound pig in mine, but I ain’t going to stay up all night cooking it! Miss Lizzie usually does 110-125 pounders, with her daddy’s recipe. Her stew is great, too.

  71. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:28 pm

    Tom,

Id imagine it’s difficult to cook all the different parts at the same time without overcooking some…..like getting the shoulders and hams done without drying out the tenderloin

  72. tomingeorgia October 25th, 2013 at 5:37 pm

    blake,
It’s all about long and slow, along with basting liberally and turning the sucker over every so often. Not a one-man job, although when Miss Lizzie does it, she recruits a grandson or a nephew, and it’s literally a 12 to 14 hour process, done right. I helped with one once, ate it gratefully, and slept very well the next night. Pulling it is another time-consuming chore, that’s why I leave it to the pros.

  73. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:38 pm

    Tom ,

    I bet…..looks fun though

  74. randy l. October 25th, 2013 at 5:39 pm

so blake, would finishing 18 holes of golf with a BBQ brisket dinner on the 19th hole make for a good day ?

    i’m guessing it would.

i’ve never BBQ’d anything but all this talk between you and tomingeorgia is making me want some BBQ something.

of all the side things that get talked about on the blog as a sideline to baseball this is right up there at the top for entertainment value.

  75. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:41 pm

“so blake, would finishing 18 holes of golf with a BBQ brisket dinner on the 19th hole make for a good day ?”

  80. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 5:44 pm

I may have lucked into a treasure trove of BBQ with Dickeys.

And I may have a barter arrangement w Mac to get some Franklins BBQ sauce to lay on it.

Talk about the luck of the Irish.

    :)

  81. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 5:46 pm

    Blake-

Having watched so many BBQ TV shows I have lusted after it for a while now.

If I wasn’t so lazy I’d live on the stuff.

And since I have the cleanest arteries this side of baby ward I’m cool w eating as much of it as I want.

    :)

  82. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 5:49 pm

    MTU,
Get you a smoker and make it yourself….weber kettles aren’t that expensive I don’t thinkn

  84. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 5:50 pm

For the health conscious among you.

Are Flu shots bad for you ?

    Mrs. MTU says they are.

We argue about it every year.

There once was a place calle Pork Palace on 401 south of Raleigh, almost to Fuquay-Varina, that had smoke coming from it’s chimneys day and night. Still exist? Big pink neon pig out front. I expect they’re done by now, with the real estate prices and growth in the area.

  88. blake October 25th, 2013 at 5:56 pm

Flu shots aren’t bad for you and it’s literally impossible for them to give you the flu . It’s a killed virus in the vaccine…..

Maybe I’ll give Cliff Lee a call and see if he’ll shoot me a Javellina instead of a Deer this time.

In return I’ll make sure Mrs. Lee has safe passage thru NYS.

    Sounds fair to me.

I never saw the pork palace so Id say it’s not there anymore…..I went to hillsborough BBQ a lot

  93. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 5:59 pm

    Blake-

Mrs. MTU says they put all kinds of other bad sh*t in them ?

    Like mercury and other fillers.

  94. blake October 25th, 2013 at 6:02 pm

Id rather have 50-60% protection against the flu than 0% . The immunization isn’t perfect but studies show that even if you get the flu after being vaccinated then the symptoms are likely to be lessened……

  95. blake October 25th, 2013 at 6:04 pm

There is a small amount of mercury but they make mercury free ones now and honestly you probably get much more mercury from eating a piece of tuna than from the flu shot ….. Same story you hear from that dentist who says those “mercury fillings” will kill you before charging you 1,000 bucks to cut them out.

  96. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 6:06 pm

    Thanks for that Randy.

I think Mrs. MTU spoke of that lady.

JAP told me about an all natural anti-viral last year.

I think it’s called Lomitin, or something like that.

I keep telling Mrs. MTU that if anything happens to me from the vaccinations she’ll be rich due to the life insurance.

She should be encouraging me to get them.

    :)

  97. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 6:08 pm

    Blake-

That is my argument to Mrs. MTU but she still insists she is right.

    Women.

    :( :)

  98. blake October 25th, 2013 at 6:09 pm

    MTU,
My suggestion is just to tell her she right and go have a cold one

  99. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 6:10 pm

I would like to hear what our Physicians and Bret our nutritionist have to say about this.

  100. MTU October 25th, 2013 at 6:11 pm

    OK Blake.

    Thanks for the advice.

    :)

I tend to side with actual research when it comes to medicine . You can find opinion and theory on virtually anything but there are scientists that heavily research this stuff and I trust what they say.

There is a reason life expectancy keeps going up…..western medicine …..it’s certainly not because we are eating healthier

  102. tomingeorgia October 25th, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Go have a flu shot and a cold one, both. Last time I got the flu it devolved into pneumonia and almost iced me. Never missed a flu shot tince

When researching “Dish,” Riegler haunted china departments, where he overheard many brides agonizing. “They would start with a lively pattern they liked, then some older, mother like female relative would say, ‘But will you still like it in 20 years?’ ” Then the bride if she didn’t run off screaming would default to classic white, perhaps with a simple border.
