While the Cardinals and Red Sox are waiting to start tonight’s Game 3 of the World Series, the Yankees attention might be focused on Japan, where the offseason’s best available pitcher — presumably — is pitching in the Japan Series. Here’s The Associated Press, with bonus points for the mention of three current or former Yankees in this story.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will be aiming to extend one of the most successful runs in the history of professional baseball when he takes the mound for the Rakuten Eagles in Game 1 of the Japan Series on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Tanaka went a record 24-0 this season and will be looking to extend his consecutive win streak in the best-of-seven series against the Yomiuri Giants.

Japan’s version of the World Series pits Japan’s oldest, most established team against the upstart Eagles, who have only been around since 2005.

The Eagles are based in Sendai and represent the Tohoku region which was devastated by the March 11, 2011, earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crises.

TanakaIn September, Tanaka notched his 21st straight win to break Japan’s previous record of 20 in one season set by Kazuhisa Inao in 1957.

Going back to Aug. 19, 2012, the last time he lost a game, Tanaka has won 30 games in a row, including two wins in the playoffs this year.

All the success this season has raised Tanaka’s profile among teams in Major League Baseball, making him the most sought-after Japanese import since Yu Darvish.

According to media reports, at least seven major league teams, including the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, are expected to enter the Tanaka sweepstakes once the season ends.

Tanaka isn’t eligible for free agency but it’s expected he will be made available via the posting system that allows MLB teams to bid for the negotiating rights to Japanese players.

Darvish, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Ichiro Suzuki all went to the majors under the same system.

A first-round draft pick for the Eagles in 2006, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Tanaka is a right-handed power pitcher with a high three-quarters delivery.

With a fastball in the mid-90′s, Tanaka has impressed major league scouts. He also throws a splitter with downward movement, a slider and the occasional curveball.

Like Darvish and Matsuzaka, Tanaka was a standout at Japan’s high school baseball tournament. He struck out 459 batters over three seasons, surpassing Matsuzaka’s mark of 423.

In addition to Tanaka, the Eagles will be counting on two former major leaguers in the Japan Series.

Former Yankees outfielder Andruw Jones batted .243 with 26 home runs and 94 RBIs in 143 games to help the team to its first Pacific League pennant.

Also making a major contribution is former major league infielder Casey McGehee, who batted .292 with 28 home runs and 93 RBIs.

watching him on youtube..crazy breaking ball

  2. joeman October 26th, 2013 at 2:13 pm

if he’s healthy he’s a no-brainer for this team and at 24 nice anchor for years to come

  3. Duh Innings II October 26th, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Here’s an idea for the Yankees from this article:

Re-sign Casey McGehee who just turned only 32 years old two weeks ago for 2014 only at $500K to play 3B. If he sucks trade him as he could easily be traded for his remainder of the year cost ($367K after 54 games, $250K after 81 games and so on.)

He posted 28 HR and 93 RBI for a Japanese League team this year. If he produced just half that for the 2014 Yankees (14 HR and 47 RBI), he’d have 2 more HR and 5 less RBI than the 2013 Yankees 3B. Figure David Adams pops a homerun and drives in 5 RBI doing some backup duty at 3B and that’s 15 HR and 52 RBI from the 2014 Yankees 3B – 3 more HR and the same amount of RBI from the 2013 Yankees 3B but at a fraction of the cost since 2013 Rodriguez, Youkilis, and Nix cost $40.9M combined and McGehee-Adams would cost only $1M (assuming $500K to each player.)

Would Juan Uribe or a healthy re-signed Kevin Youkilis who’d cost alot more than McGehee post 15 HR 52 RBI? They could, but it’s hard to say. Nunez and a re-signed Nix certainly wouldn’t and I doubt David Adams would. If Youkilis and Nix don’t re-sign the Yanks’ only in-house under control options for 3B are Nunez, Adams, and Rodriguez if/when he comes back. Even if Rodriguez comes back it’ll be in the middle of the year or later as no way he serves less than a half a year suspension and what will he have left then?

McGehee posted 61 HR and 278 RBI 2009-12 including 23 HR and 104 RBI in 2010, so he has demonstrated he can be a productive major league player. We’d all kill for his 2009 or 2010, especially his 2010. He would be a total no-risk high-reward signing. ‘Say he has a good first two months (his career slashline with 6 HR and 20 RBI through May) then tanks in June (1 HR 3 RBI) before he’s released producing 7 HR and 23 RBI. That’s pretty good for a guy making only half a mil. The Yanks would have to get another 3B but hey, sometimes teams have to get someone better in the middle of the season. A team never gets / can get EVERYTHING they need before a season begins. I think he’d jump at the chance to return to the Yankees and MLB and what better way to return?

The Yanks signed 35-year old Lyle Overbay for a year and $1.25M three days before spring training ended and he produced a nice 14 HR and 59 RBI for them after a 2009-12 which wasn’t as good as McGehee’s 2009-12. Why couldn’t McGehee post the same or better?

Forget David Freese, Aramis Ramirez, or Pablo Sandoval. No way should the Yanks give up Nova, Phelps, or Warren for Sandoval when Sabathia is no lock to return to ace form and after his bad 2013 and Kuroda is no lock to return at all.

Re-sign McGehee and give him April and May to show his stuff. If he sucks, trade him and get someone else.

  4. Duh Innings II October 26th, 2013 at 2:45 pm

Oh yeah, re-signing McGehee for half a mil means the Yanks could spend at C and RF.

They could sign A.J. Pierzynski for $8M and Beltran for $14M and those two and McGehee would cost $22.5M, an average of only $7.5M each.

    C – Pierzynski $8M
    1B – Teixiera $22.5M
2B – Cano $23M assuming he takes the Sabathia contract the Yanks supposedly offered him
    3B – McGehee $0.5M
    SS – Ryan figure $3.5M
    LF – Soriano $5M
    CF – Gardner figure $4M
    RF – Beltran $14M
    DH – Jeter $9.5M

$90M total for the starting nine which gives the Yanks $99M – Sabathia’s $23M = $76M to spend on pitching and the bench if they wanted the payroll to be $189M.

Upgrades at C, 1B, SS, LF, RF, DH, and possibly 3B (2B and CF as is.)

  5. Duh Innings II October 26th, 2013 at 2:47 pm

    Oh yeah II -

SEVEN of the above nine everyday players would be in their walk years.

Teixiera would be easier to trade after the season as he’d have only two years left on his contract (I know the Yanks would have to kick in X of the $45M due him 2015-16.)

  6. austinmac October 26th, 2013 at 3:06 pm

I have read there are about eight teams interested in Tanaka. Think we have more than a 12.5% chance?

    austinmac-

right now i have no idea what the yankees are doing. until they do something, it’s all talk by them or by people they’re sending info out.

my feeling is the yankees will get worse before they get better.

they will get better because eventually because they have a huge net worth that eventually they’ll use.

right now they are taking the position they are right until they are proven wrong. i think reality is going to kick hal and levine in the butt. then they’ll adjust and get better :)

The new posting system for Japanese players is not in effect yet but it is expected to apply by the end of the Year.

At least that’s what was mentioned previously.

That may or may not complicate matters for the Yankees.

The new system allows the player posted to select from the 3 highest bidders.

The player gets to pick which one they want to negotiate with regardless of the relative bid position.

i.e., the player is not required to select the highest bidder.

So for the first time a Japanese player will actually have a choice.

Does Tanaka want to play for the Yankees ?

And will the Yankees wind up with one of the 3 highest bids ?

    Who knows ?

“As has been stated, not taking advantage of all that modern science has given to us just doesn’t make sense. ”

    yanks 61-

here’s the problem with science. people come to different conclusions seeing the same science.

you are in france. GMOs are banned in european food crops although they can be sold if made in theUS and shipped over there.

but even places like mcdonalds are starting to source all there materials and ingredients from nonGMOs.

mcdonalds realize people in france don’t want GMOs. now in the US, GMOs are allowed and are in almost everything unless it’s organic.

so two different economic system operating under different GMOs rules.

personally i think monsanto which produces most of the GMOs to go with it’s round up herbicide is very much like big tobacco in the 60′s in the US.

science alone doesn’t solve the problem of all things.
    as we see with GMOs.
different countries see the science different.

you are in a country that bans them.
    i’m not.

you will have healthier mass market food available to you than i will have here.
my bigger point is that it takes some thoughtfulness to sort all of this out.

The one I really want to see get canned is Newman.

I’m hoping for that but certainly not holding my breath.

Looks like the Yankees might be doing just a nip and tuck instead of a much needed makeover.

The Peter principle insures that anyone incompetent gets to stay in place while the easy birds are quickly picked off.

    :(

  14. austinmac October 26th, 2013 at 3:31 pm

    Randy,

I will also believe it when I see it. They will convince Hal, who wants to believe it, that they were unlucky with injuries and they can plug holes like last year and can compete.

In my mind, if they do that, this season and perhaps several will be uglier than most realize. Read Chad’s State of the Team and it is grim, position after position.

  15. randy l. October 26th, 2013 at 3:34 pm

    mtu-

but on a positive note , don’t you think that the yankees are to big to fail for long ?

right now they have no feedback reaching them that they have failed. they only see injuries as the reason for a bad year.

i think it’ll take another bad year for them to have the feedback to begin change.

    should newman go?
of course, what’s he done? not much.

  16. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 3:35 pm

    Mac-

Blake has it nailed. The Yankees must pick a lane.

Either blow things up and start over.

    or

Decide you want to compete by adding vets and spending what you need to.

Don’t drive along the yellow line and expect not to get hurt.

  17. Against All Odds October 26th, 2013 at 3:37 pm

Yea it looks like they are going to go with the things aren’t just working out for us but we are on the right path belief. I’m not saying they should fire everyone from Cash to the parking lot attendant but if changes are going to be made doesn’t it mean a few guys in charge of scouting and develop have to go.

  18. mick October 26th, 2013 at 3:39 pm

If blowing things up means letting Cano go , that might not be their choice but his.
Trading off CC and/or Tex is also not their choice unless they give them away.

  19. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 3:42 pm

    Randy-

I think the Yankees are destined to be what their history and legacy demands.

It’s just a question of time.

They may sink for a while only to rise from the ashes like a Phoenix later on.

Or alternatively they might decide that they are indeed the Yankees and flip the rest of the league the bird again by renewing their spending.

Either way I see the Yankees taking their rightful place.

    I prefer a balanced approach.

I’m Ok w one more down year as long as the money spigot opens wide in 2015.

I think the Farm has plenty of potential and will produce given a chance.

Ideally the Yankees will realize that they have a financial edge and use it, develop the Farm, and trade for other needs.

This OS should be very interesting.

  20. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 3:47 pm

    Mick-

For me blowing it up means being dedicated to an immediate and significant rebuilding process.

The specifics do not matter as much as the dedication and will to proceed in that direction.

The how is not as important as the why in this case.

It can be a slightly slower rate or it can be more intense but the aim must be unmistakable.

OTOH they could simply use some more financial muscle.

That would be quicker and more satisfying to some.

  21. mick October 26th, 2013 at 3:47 pm

I’m starting not to like Nova’s constant tweeting.

In Spanish or not, understandable or not, I’m starting to think he’s a flake like others who are no longer on the team.

They all seem to vanish once they get addicted to the attention afforded by tweeting.

Perhaps if they spent the same amount of energy on their craft there would be less mental lapses.

    ==========================
There could be many shades of grey with that formula.
Rebuilding is a necessity, no doubt.
I don’t think they believe they did that last season.
They tried to patch it up in what was a disastrous , unlucky Friday the 13th season of the 21st Century.
They have to get younger by default.
Whether they get better is the crapshoot.
I think they think their pitching will carry them.
That could be a dangerous path.

If A-rod has at least a 100 game suspension and Cano moves on their will plenty of money to go round.

If not it might just be Tanaka and maybe McCann.

If they are smart they can do a lot.

Tanaka(8-10 mil), Peralta(6 mil),AJ P.(6 Mil), and Grandy( QO), Phillips.

    That would help el mucho.

  35. Against All Odds October 26th, 2013 at 4:10 pm

Yea Levine isn;t getting cut off. His impact wouldn’t be as bad if he just stayed on the business side. Many of us have trashed Cashman for bad moves but what about Levine. He was knee deep in the A-rod negotiations when it came to getting 10 yrs. What about Ichiro being a shell of himself and deciding it was a smart move to bring him back for not 1 but two yrs.

  36. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 4:30 pm

  37. Against All Odds October 26th, 2013 at 4:39 pm

Of course he does. A-rod’s second deal was about chasing the HR record and Ichiro was about him getting 4,000 combined hits. Did he really think ppl would rush to the stadium to see him do that??? Maybe they made a killing internationally.

  39. ron October 26th, 2013 at 4:48 pm

It is not all that difficult to figure out.
The Yankees need better than a nunez, adams, etc…,but don’t need an allstar,or a 20 million dollar player at every position.
A Napoli over what they had at the c position would have gone a very long way.Or ajp.

    We need a 3b,2b,dh,outfielder,and i’d offer hughes a 2/16 contract.
Let hughes pitch with no stress, and just forget about it.

Also,as chad had mentioned.Bring up our top prospects earlier, and throw them in the deep end.
Tyler Austin, etc…Throw him at 3b,and maybe we have a david wright.
If they are doing ok in AA,that is good enough,or else we will never have a breakout prospect.
We do it with our pitchers, but not position players.

CC,nova, hughes should be our 3 pitchers, then try to get one more, plus maybe tanaka.

    Look at the rs lineup.
Honestly,i laugh at it every time I look at it,but they get it done.

lester, buchholz, lackey, peavey, napoli, pedroia, ortiz, ghomes, ellsbury, nava, drew, are just some of them, but very few big names, and some of these guys were very cheap, and waiver wire types.
They traded away all of their bad contracts to the dodgers who are home watching on tv,then signed a bunch of free agents, and got help from only a few prospects like nava.
They have very few prospects that helped out this year, and none that were superstars,or even close, and nava is 30 yrs old.
So they turned their team around by signing, drew, ghomes, napoli, peavey, webster, carp, victorino, with what they already had, wich was ok,but not great. Not one of those signings is anything to be excited about at the time of the signing, except, maybe Napoli.
I remember wondering why the Yankees did not sign drew.
A simple signing like that goes a long way.

  40. ron October 26th, 2013 at 4:55 pm

What the Yankees should do is,sign or trade for a 3b,dh,outfielder that can hold the position down well enough, and have adams, austin, etc… be backups.
Also, let betantes compete for a starting rotation spot in the spring. If he fails, trade him, release him,or put him in the pen.

Ribs and Sausage were excellent but the Brisket was little on the dry side.

All in all for my uneducated palate not bad.

    MTU,

I agree they need to pick a lane. Blake has had it right a long time.

As I posted earlier, there are reportedly eight teams interested in Tanaka, if not more. I think pencilling him in is optimistic. The other teams will likely come with some real money. The Sox are making the extra $70M this year. The Dodgers. Yikes. The Rangers know how well they did with Darvish.

I am all for it, but to get him the team must really step up. Even then, someone may beat whatever offer they make. They better have contingent plans.

    Hi Tom

No I haven’t, I spent the week in Boston on business so this weekend just taking care of chores around the house waiting for the ballgame.

With the cold weather moving the dry fly season is coming to an end. This time of year is for streamer fishing as the bigger fish are into the fast water gravel beds spawning.

I don’t like this type of fishing so I’m pretty much shutdown for the season unless I venture up to Oswego to fish for steelheads which also nymph fishing.

  50. tomingeorgia October 26th, 2013 at 5:34 pm

The price of brisket around here discourages me. Hope your friend does it justice. What game is available around you, antelope, mule deer, anything? Must be something around for mountain lions to eat.

  51. yankinvegas October 26th, 2013 at 5:36 pm

I would bid around 90 million for Tanaka.
The Yankees will look like fools if he goes to the Dodgers or Boston. Everything is a gamble, but this guy appears to be a solid one.
Also, I am onboard with signing AJP for 1 yr + option. 10 million for next yeaer. The guy can hit, will add HR’s at our park and has attitude.
Will be much cheaper and less years than McCann and can keep the seat warm for Sanchez. We could throw some of the other guys into trades.

  52. ron October 26th, 2013 at 5:39 pm

    RhapsodyInBlue

    Absolutely.

IMO,it is just about making changes when something is not working.

We know gardner is the answer in at least one outfield position, but the others are not,at least as starters,so replace them, and let our prospects be backups so they have a chance to take the job from someone, wich eventually will happen in some way, shape,or form.
ajp, mccann, navarro, uribe, cruz, drew, choo, ellsbury, and many others, are all free agents, and there are plenty of players to plug hole for relatively cheap.
An example of being smart is,maybe signing Navarro who is more under the radar than ajp,or McCann.Drew,or someone else to backup jeter would be smart.
Maybe beltran, cruz, choo, ellsbury.if you’r not paying for a name,or past production.
Ellsbury for 3/39-3/45 would be a good signing.

    Cano,navarro,drew,a 3b,an outfielder,tanaka,and maybe another pitcher.

  53. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 5:39 pm

    Tom-

Me too. I splurged and got a 2lb tri tip for about $18. I owe the guy as he keeps me in beer and other things on hikes.

Depends on what part of the State.

In the North they have Elk and Deer. Black bear.

Here we have Deer, Pronghorn, Turkey, and Bison.

  54. RhapsodyInBlue October 26th, 2013 at 5:43 pm

A few weeks back I went up they were taking a small fly off the surface out in the fast water, a blue wing olive which a small mayfly, I had one on but lost it.

Because they were in such shallow still water I think they saw my fly line. You have to make an excellent cast any splashy delivery will spook them and put them down for the day.

I thought about it driving home and decided I would return the next day but would tie on a longer tippet (monoflilament) going from 9 foot to 12 foot and also go upstream from the feeding trout and cast down to them letting my fly drift over them.

All trout face upstream looking for their food.

Unfortunately the bluewing olive hatch did not come off that day so there was no surface feeding, I sat on a fallen tree stream side for 4 hours waiting for a hatch that never happened.

  55. ron October 26th, 2013 at 5:43 pm

    cano-23 million
    navarro,maybe 8 million
    drew,maybe 5 million
    a 3b,maybe 8 million
    an outfielder,maybe 13-15 million
    tanaka,maybe 10 million
    Then maybe another pitcher.

    Just guesses on above salaries.

  56. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 5:45 pm

    Ron-

You are way off on Drew.

He made 9.5 Mil this year w the Sux. He isn’t worth it.

  57. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 5:45 pm

And AJ P is better hitter than Navarro.

  58. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 5:47 pm

And Cano has reportedly already turned down a 7/161 offer from the Yankees.

He is going to get at least 200 Mil IMO.

  59. RhapsodyInBlue October 26th, 2013 at 5:49 pm

    ron

But it is quite remarkable the emphasis the Sox placed on upgrading the pen which ultimately paid off.

Both Bailey and Hanrahan did not deliver as expected but the Japanese pitchers most certainly did.

  60. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 5:52 pm

The Yankees pen should be one of the least of our concerns.

We have plenty of proven and lively arms to fill it.

    With more on the way.

As long as D-Rob handles his new role it’s a non problem.

Rumor is that we are after an experienced Korean closer.

He might be the insurance policy.

  61. RhapsodyInBlue October 26th, 2013 at 5:53 pm

Mr. MTU I hope you are correct. Good health to the Yankees in 2014 would be a big plus.

  62. RhapsodyInBlue October 26th, 2013 at 5:55 pm

Would like to have Robbie back but not for the asking price.

And consider the Cards got Wacha for Puljols the Angels Trout for Tex.

  63. sammiejohnson October 26th, 2013 at 6:01 pm

“Rumor is that we are after an experienced Korean closer.

He might be the insurance policy.”

I think it might also be insurance because Robertson is a FA after 2014. If he signs elsewhere, at least closer would be covered.

  64. ron October 26th, 2013 at 6:05 pm

Ok,so i’m off on a few,but my point is maybe a Navarro over a more expensive name brand, and even if we don’t sign cano,we should make smart moves, til another opportunity presents itself, and,or our prospects steal a position.

Drew, ghomes, victorino, napoli, carp, webster, peavey, and a few others,is who the rs added, and add their bullpen additions, and not one single player would any one of us would of wanted on our team, but they are in the ws,and wen’t from last to the ws,after everybody wen’t from talking about how great they run things, and might have put together the best team in history, then trade all of their bad contracts, sign a bunch of free agents that not one of us would drool over, and here they are in the ws,and people are talking once again about how great they run things, all after a lot of us doomed them fot the next decade, when the Yankees were on top of the mountain.

    Tom

When I was younger we used to hike into the Hudson River gorge with bait and take some big rainbows. I remember one sunny day with a friend of mine we made the 3 mile hike into the river then crossed a railroad trestle over the Hudson and then bushwhacked another 3 miles upstream. We were catching 14″ trout on every cast, that was when the limit was ten per day.

We carried them all out there were a few over 20 inches. The walk in was brutal lots of big boulders to climb over and around you would get beat up to hell I’m too old for that trip now.

Kept a lot of those fish gave a some to family members. Fresh trout is delicious.

  124. pete2 October 26th, 2013 at 8:07 pm

I am concerned his k/9 has dropped each of the last 2 years to 7.7 K/9. Igawa had a higher k/9 in Japan his last year their. That translates to a k/9 of 6 something in MLB and the decline suggests his arm may be wearing down. He is not a big guy and kind of reminds me of Daisuke as opposed to Darvish.

From You tube clips seems he gets a lot of his K’s from breaking pitches out of the zone. MLB hitters will not be as likely to chase.

As for velocity, Japanese pitchers are always hyped as having a FB about 3 mph higher than what you will see in MLB pitching on 4 days rest. Expect a low 90 fastball.

Unless he gets a lot of K’s or is a GB pitcher, or has a 95+ mph FB, I would not give a RH pitcher that kind of money in YS3 .

And yes, although it won’t count against the luxury tax, the posting fee is real money too and shows up on the teams financial statements.

St. Louis fans are so nice they actually cheered the Sux players during intros and never booed.

I was listening to EEI today and the guys were in St. Louis. Both had been at the last ASG played in St. Louis and were talking about what they remembered most about being there. One said the sea of red; the other said how nice the fans were. He said that the NL was losing in an NL town, meaning they would not have had HFA, but he said the St. Louis fans couldn’t have been nicer.

I guess it’s true what they say about St. Louis fans. How very nice that is.

I’d like to wipe that expression off his face.

  150. blake October 26th, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Folks who thought Joe Kelly stinks are incorrect….all he had to do is give them 6 or 7 tonight and hand it over to that bullpen

  154. MTU October 26th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

So True ! Joe Kelly had terrific numbers down the stretch starting in July. I don’t have the numbers but I believe his ERA was around 1.50-2.00. The Red Sox should not take him lightly.

  210. Jeremy October 26th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Missed opportunity with the basses loaded. It stinks that the bottom of the order was up in that situation.

  211. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 26th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Credit to Peavy because he loaded the bases and a lesser pitcher might have fallen apart.

  212. Jeremy October 26th, 2013 at 9:34 pm

Jake Peavy was not that good. It was all luck that got him out of that inning.

The Cardinals need to start scoring some more runs. Take the pressure off the pitchers.

  225. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 26th, 2013 at 9:54 pm

Maybe with a lead and knowing what he has in his bullpen, in Game 3 of the WS, Matheny wasn’t going to pull one of his players to substitute another. The bases were still loaded when Carpenter came up.

  226. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 26th, 2013 at 9:56 pm

  227. Shame Spencer October 26th, 2013 at 9:56 pm

that’s correct trisha. but not why. he’s a red sox ass kisser by nature. he compared the yankees to nazis for their treatment of Torre following his departure.

Comparing the Yankees treatment of Joe torre (who was only the highest paid manager in baseball by a mile and a multi millionaire) to nazi Germany is disgusting. If my carver actually said that.

  284. jlyanks85 October 26th, 2013 at 11:10 pm

Believe me I’ve watched hundreds of buck/mccarver broadcasts. I’m just saying buck’s dad was a cards announcer and he was raised in st.louis. I even read he was a cards fan. So it’s odd to say he’s biased towards Red Sox.

  321. bigdan22 October 26th, 2013 at 11:37 pm

What we’ve seen the last couple of innings is how important it for a bullpen late in games to obtain a strike out and not rely on the batted balls. And the offensive converse, the importance of putting balls in play. Reminds me of Bernie against Kevin Brown in San Diego in ’98. Those Kevin Long hitters are always looking to do something else. But that’s history now.

Middlebrooks obstructed Craig – great call by the umpire. ‘Doesn’t matter if the obstruction was intentional or unintentional – Middlebrooks obstructed Craig who EASILY makes it home if not for the obstruction. !@#$ the Red Sox.

‘Think the Red Sox pitchers and catchers need to work a little extra on their throws to third? They’ve literally lost two World Series games on errant throws to third.

“Of the previous 104 best-of-seven World Series (four early Series were best-of-nine), 53 were tied heading into Game 3. The winner of that game has won the championship 38 times, good for a .717 winning percentage.

That trend is even stronger since the start of divisional play in 1969. In that time, there have been 18 World Series that were tied after two games, and the winner of Game 3 has gone 16-2 (.889) in those Series. That’s a fairly amazing record given that, even after winning a Game 3 tiebreaker a team still has to beat its opponent two more times to win the championship.”

    lol

red sox fans can whine all they want but Craig would have made him home if it wasn’t for the interference. That trip delayed him by 15-20 seconds. The red sox loving media can make all the excuses in the world but Middlebrooks tried to stop him with his legs.

  470. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 1:07 am

Yes, Orr played without monetary reimbursement, on horribly decrepit knees, so that he might finally confront the Russians. Get the point, Patrick Roy?

What a wonderful thing it would be if we could have a real baseball classic. Koufax would be all for it on 2 days rest. Alas, such dreams are no where in sight. Orr and Koufax laid it on the line.

  473. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 1:12 am

I’ll give hockey players credit, they show up for international tournaments. Gretzky had to set Lemieux straight regarding the ’87 Canada Cup, and we all know how that ended – 6-5 Canada over Russia with Wayne feeding super Mario.

  474. Duh Innings II October 27th, 2013 at 1:13 am

^ So did Jack Morris. TEN INNING 1991 World Series Game 7 performance.

I don’t get it. Jack does that and has a solid pitching career but isn’t in the Hall Of Fame while an all-glove no-stick bum hits one pitch over the fence and he’s in the Hall Of Fame (Mazerowski.)

  475. J. Alfred Prufrock October 27th, 2013 at 1:13 am

luis, he can’t really throw, though. He’s better off just eating the ball. This is a guy who has had trouble throwing the ball back to pitchers and he’s been off throwing down to 3B. Not like he’s Posada snapping the ball down there (Jorge was automatic on those).

  476. yankinvegas October 27th, 2013 at 1:14 am

Sandy Koufax is the best pitcher I ever saw. I saw him pitch at Shea when I was 9. My friend’s dad was a cameraman for channel 9 back in the day, and we would sit in the press box level and after the game go downstairs to be in the studio for Kiner’s Korner.
Koufax was a complete gentleman. For those of you who never saw him pitch, Kershaw is the closest guy to him today, and as good as he is, he’s not remotely close to Sandy.
I just felt like posting this.

  477. luis October 27th, 2013 at 1:16 am

    Primo,

very hard to restrain in the heat of a game…I don’t blame him…Middlebrooks on the other hand has to make sure that the ball doesn’t go past him…The throw wasn’t very good, but it was good enough to be handled

  478. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 1:17 am

Strong dreams, Alfred. Luis, looks like everyone is giving out :) I’m on a precious week off, so burning the candle at both ends, is no problem.

  502. Duh Innings II October 27th, 2013 at 1:40 am

If the Cards win tonight I think they’ll wrap it up Monday as no way they lose with Wainwright twice.

Anyone think if they win the WS Beltran will remain with them or retire? He might decide why not go out a winner and retire with a great final season. Mo just retired after having his best season ever considering his age and that he missed the last five months of 2012 – he had more saves than HIS AGE – why not Beltran?

  503. yankeefeminista October 27th, 2013 at 1:40 am

Ah, good night, Yankee people and my dear friend, jmills.

  504. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 1:43 am

yf, Gary says you can’t treat Rosemary as a perennial – not winter hardy, has to remain a house plant.

  505. RadioKev October 27th, 2013 at 1:43 am

No surprise that the Red Sox continue to be absolutely classless. Salty takes no ownership of a terrible decision, Ortiz and Peavy call it a joke. Rules do not apply to Boston sports!

  506. yankeefeminista October 27th, 2013 at 1:44 am

Thank you, jmills! I will make sure my rosemary plant remains homebound.

  507. RadioKev October 27th, 2013 at 1:45 am

What makes this call right is that it was called *immediately*. There was no consideration of “the moment,” or the “way it should end.” Sorry Sox fans, destiny is not written for you like some storybook. You play the games, and if you play better you win.

  508. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 1:58 am

Radiokev, this is a fun WS for me to bond with you guys. Paul Beeston and the Jays were very kind to, John F.. I would have been rather different. I would have refused to trade him to Boston. I would have let Boston go searching after someone, and after they found. Whatshisname, I would have rightfully fired F’s a$$. Have a nice start to the day :D

  509. ronDL white October 27th, 2013 at 2:04 am

what a way for a game to end. awesome stuff. suzyn, you cant predict baseball!

  510. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 2:07 am

In fact, for me, John Farrel is comparable to the Philapelphia Flyers, except, John ain’t going to win twice ( Or even once if I can helpt it ). The guy was given his first chance, a wonderful 3 year over the top contract, and he threw me under the bus; this is simply red the way it is.

  511. Norester October 27th, 2013 at 2:14 am

    This is a fun WS.

  512. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 2:14 am

After Boston loses, the next great part will be big poopie far from his original big poopie self, while the starting arms fall sequentially off :D

  513. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 2:17 am

Norester, it certainly is. I’m putting as much sweet Brock and, surly Gibbons, behind St. Louis as possible!

  514. jmills October 27th, 2013 at 2:27 am

You know how they say you don’t know why you feel the way you do about such and such?, well, I know how I feel about certain so and sos. Right, John? :D

  516. MTU October 27th, 2013 at 8:46 am

    Good morning.

The Cards won the pivotal game.

Hope that leads to a WS victory.

  517. MTU October 27th, 2013 at 8:54 am

I’m hoping Buttholz is not 100% tonight.

I kind of doubt that he is.

  518. Doreen October 27th, 2013 at 8:58 am

Glad the Cardinals won. Some ending, huh?

  519. RYUKINGDOM October 27th, 2013 at 8:59 am

LIVE FROM JAPAN: Just watched Tanaka pitch a complete game win over the Japan Champs, Giants. Tanaka had 129 pitches. Struck out 12 and gave up only 3 hits. In the 8th one Giant player hit a slow curve just over the fence. i was impressed with him, but don’t think he is dynamic as Darvish.

  520. MTU October 27th, 2013 at 9:02 am

    Thanks RYU.

That seems to be the general consensus.

Very good potential but not Yu.

    Good morning MTU & Doreen

My winter will be more bearable if the RS lose.

That loss was just Trisha’s karma repaying them for the “tuck rule” when the Patriots beat the Raiders in 2001.

Year to date our same center NOI grew by 4.8% compared to 2.7% during the same period last year. We continue to be comfortable with our comp center NOI growth assumption of 4% this year. The occupancy rate for our wholly owned stabilized properties was 96.2% at the end of the second quarter of 2008, up 100 basis points from the first quarter of this year. As we stated on our first quarter conference call, we recaptured 38 stores that were occupied by 6 tenants, representing a gross leasable area of approximately 236,000 square feet or 2.8% of our wholly owned portfolio.

Hi there Irish American Culture Examiner here! I won my wedding and had about a month to plan it. Some of the costs were on us, and due to the short notice and the fact that my husband had no job at the time (also due to having family who could not attend if there was alcohol), we opted to have a dry wedding reception.
