World Series Game 5: Red Sox at Cardinals

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 28, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

CARDINALS (2-2)
Matt Carpenter 2B
Shane Robinson CF
Matt Holliday LF
Carlos Beltran RF
Yadier Molina C
Allen Craig 1B
David Freese 3B
Pete Kozma SS
Adam Wainwright RHP

RHP Adam Wainwright (2-2, 2.25 ERA in the postseason)

RED SOX (2-2)
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Dustin Pedroia 2B
David Ortiz 1B
Jonny Gomes LF
Daniel Nava RF
Xander Bogaerts 3B
Stephen Drew SS
David Ross C
Jon Lester LHP

LHP Jon Lester (3-1, 1.67 ERA in the postseason)

TIME/TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

LINEUP SHAKEUP:
Both teams made significant lineup changes for Game 4. The Red Sox adjusted because of Shane Victorino sitting out a second straight game, dropping Daniel Nava and bumping up the heart of the order. The Cardinals adjusted because of lefty Jon Lester, moving Shane Robinson into the No. 2 spot and dropping Carlos Beltran to be their cleanup hitter.

GIVING IT A SHOT: Allen Craig hasn’t played the field in more than a month, and he looked awful trying to run the bases last night, but he’s going to try to play first base tonight. That’s another adjustment to Lester.

PEAVY PROBABLE: John Farrell announced pregame that Jake Peavy is the Red Sox projected Game 7 starter, with Clay Buchholz possibly available as a reliever should the series go that long.

I LIVE for the FOX moments and highlights where I can see nothing but exuberant Sux players, just like I look forward to the in-game interviews, always with Sux players!

    Oh yeah.

    GO CARDS!!!

    ————————————-
you know that the Cards aren’t winning tonight

  5. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:07 pm

    Gomes is their cleanup hitter.

What a hoot. Hits one hr. and he’s the Man.

    P.S. He’s hitting under .200 overall.

    Oh, I know he’s hot.

    :)

Comet , Hi and yes Mr. Paul ( the man who built the 1970′s NY Yankees ) made that trade that put them over the top in the AL. I remember him as a real nice Grandfather type man but man did he transform the Yanks starting with the Charlie Spikes trade in 73 for Nettles which is just about when The Yanks started to make noise in the AL East. They were in first or there abouts until the All-Star break in KC but they faded in the back end as they did in 74 with their September swoon.

    MCCARVER IS BEYOND PATHETIC.

  10. Pat M. October 28th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

joeman. I’m on the Cards again tonight but I’m laying -135 tonight

  11. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

  14. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

why even pitch to him with a base open?

  15. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

I told Wainwright to put his Big Boy pants on.

    :(

  16. Triple Short of a Cycle October 28th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

Wainright will be the reason why they lose the series

  17. tomingeorgia October 28th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

Antiques Roadshow is on, and Mrs. Tom would rather watch valuable old stuff than me watching baseball. See you tomorrow.

  18. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:14 pm

If he loses 2 he won’t be able to show his face.

And he’ll be remembered as a choker.

  19. jmills October 28th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Tom, I totally understand :), you and yours have a great night!

  20. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

The Elf looks like he has had about 6 cans of red bull.

  21. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 8:18 pm

Hold that line, boys, hold that line!

On phone until 8:45 but have an eye on the game.

  22. Triple Short of a Cycle October 28th, 2013 at 8:19 pm

    Why are they cheering?

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 8:20 pm

“The Elf looks like he has had about 6 cans of red bull.”

    With a milkshake chaser!

would this geico commersh with the pig qualify as bestiality?

  25. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 8:21 pm

    “Why are they cheering?”

Cards fans are nothing if not supportive.

  26. Carlo October 28th, 2013 at 8:22 pm

Ortiz is now batting about 750 in the series and they have yet to even try to move him in the batters box. It’s truly remarkable to me.

  27. JobaTipsHisCap October 28th, 2013 at 8:23 pm

Sux wins tonight, since we have a game thread.
    Locked.

  28. Carlo October 28th, 2013 at 8:24 pm

Pat – the first line that came out had boston -125 and it immediately went to St. Louis -115 and continue to move

  29. JobaTipsHisCap October 28th, 2013 at 8:24 pm

    This fake cards ace…..
    Hmmmm,

  30. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Cards lose tonight and it’s all over.

  31. Triple Short of a Cycle October 28th, 2013 at 8:25 pm

How freakin lucky is this team

  32. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 8:27 pm

Lester can be had, whether now or eventually.

Cards just need to be able to take advantage when the time comes.

  33. JM October 28th, 2013 at 8:30 pm

    Barry Svrluga @barrysvrluga
David Ortiz’s World Series slash line is now .750/.813/1.416, which yields a 2.230 OPS. Repeat: .750/.813/1.416 for 2.230 OPS.

  34. JobaTipsHisCap October 28th, 2013 at 8:31 pm

    Lester is very sharp tonight.
Better team wins 7 games series. Cards are so fake.

But you still can root for suxs plane drop on the way back to Boston.

  35. randy l. October 28th, 2013 at 8:31 pm

there’s upside if the red sox win the this series.

it’s a bitter pill to swallow.

but it might be the tipping point for the yankees to change course.

that said, there’s upside if the cardinals win too.

they’ll be the team everyone will be emulating including the yankees.

both the cardinals and the yankees are setting an example with their developmental ability that is making the yankees look really bad.

no matter who wins, that team makes the yankees look bad.

  36. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:34 pm

What the heck has happened to Wainwright’s velo ?

    90-92 ?

GREAT exchange here in response to McCarver’s ridiculous musings in tonight’s and last night’s game:

@craigcalcaterra BREAKING: Joe Torre says Major League Baseball will “look into” the idea of adding a fourth strike to strikeouts for the 2014 season.

@asile983 @craigcalcaterra *depending on what the intent of the pitcher was with their third strike

  39. mick October 28th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Thanks for that reminder Randy :)

What the heck has happened to Wainwright’s velo ?

    —————–

No idea, but since his location is also a little off (despite the K’s), I’d take the opportunity to drill Ortiz in the ribs his next time up.

  56. randy l. October 28th, 2013 at 8:51 pm

    shame-
i wasn’t being sarcastic, molina is really good.

  57. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 8:52 pm

The Red Sox winning the World Series will not change how the Yankees operate, if the Red Sox going from last to the World series has not already convinced Yankees ownership to make a change.

Them winning the WS is irrelevant, they’ve already made the WS after being last the prior year.

  58. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 8:53 pm

Wainwright’s velo is usually a lot higher is my point.

  59. mick October 28th, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Who is this guy Randy, is he new here? :)

  60. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 8:57 pm

    He was safe.

  61. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 8:57 pm

    He was out.

  62. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:00 pm

WEEI had a parody today about Drew. It was called something like “the sounds of the postseason of Steven Drew”. What is was, was every call in the postseason where Drew made an out. It was hysterical because they did one call after another after another after another after another.

However, it also made me so critically aware of the value of his damned glove. How many plays has Drew made that have ended up with a Cards player being thrown out at first, or have started a DP? Do those count? Do those help to keep the score down?

Truth? I’d much rather have an opponent who was great with the bat but really crappy in the field. Of course, I’d want a great rotation to go along with that.

    :)

  63. chicken_stanley October 28th, 2013 at 9:01 pm

I think I just heard that Wainwright had 15 hits this year… He could have started at catcher for the yankees!

  64. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:03 pm

    that pitch was way inside.

  65. mick October 28th, 2013 at 9:03 pm

all Red Sox all the time on FOX.

  68. MTU October 28th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Big Sloppy must be hitting the juice really hard.

  69. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:07 pm

No FOX Fast Trax? Tells me Carpenter was correct.

Here’s a true story. Last night I was in the car listening to the ESPN broadcast of the game when Holliday was struck out and was upset with the call. The ESPN broadcaster said Holliday was upset and “from here” it looked to him like it was two balls away from the strike zone. Then he said he’d have to look at the replay to be able to say for sure. After the replay he said he understood why Holliday was upset.

I came in the house and it was the top of the next inning and they showed the FOX Fast Trax (or whatever you call it) and they showed that the ball hit the outside of the strike zone.

Obviously they put up whatever graphic they wanted to and said Holliday was wrong. Obviously they are damned liars.

  70. Duh Innings II October 28th, 2013 at 9:08 pm

Pathetic Cardinals offense. Carpenter WTF are you doing taking a 3-2 count – SWING!

  71. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:11 pm

I’ve said all along Trisha, they manipulate their FOX Trax crap to make the viewing audience believe the REd Sox always get the short end of the stick.

  72. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:11 pm

jmills – pre-emptory strike. Please don’t mention any former beantown players on the game thread, such as any hockey greats from the past or anyone else. Not that I’m superstitious or anything! We just don’t want to add any negativity to the thread, ha ha.

Once the game is over, feel free to go forr it.

    ;)

  73. Triple Short of a Cycle October 28th, 2013 at 9:11 pm

How did Lester turn into Pedro Martinez all of a sudden?

  74. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:14 pm

“How did Lester turn into Pedro Martinez all of a sudden?”

Something green in his glove? Or did he manage to get someone to make “it” a more benign color?

  75. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:14 pm

Sugar Shane Robinson!!! All these guys take strike 3.

  76. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:15 pm

  88. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

mick – I wonder if we can make up jinxes that will be embraced by the universe?

For example, JON LESTER HAS GIVEN UP ONLY ONE RUN

  89. Duh Innings II October 28th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Hey FOX you think you can show Drew make the inning-ending play AND Holiday smack one out instead of Drew making the inning-ending play three times?

What’s with Buck saying “Holiday hit one way into center.” HUH?

Um, tell people who may be just tuning in Holiday hit a homerun, asshole.

Too busy wacking off to the Red Sox.

  90. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:24 pm

  97. Duh Innings II October 28th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

    Norester

    Ummm thanks??? LOL j/k

My being a Yankees fan / McCarver-Buck hater aside, it is totally ridiculous of FOX to show the inning-ending play but not the game-tying homerun. If I’m Matt Holiday’s parents/family I’m calling up FOX and screaming.

  98. chicken_stanley October 28th, 2013 at 9:34 pm

  108. Carlo October 28th, 2013 at 9:42 pm

Feels like this game will be decided in the 6th or 7th inning. Sox best chance to score is here and at Louis looking at bottom 7 for their shot with wainwright leading off the bottom half here.

  109. Tar October 28th, 2013 at 9:43 pm

    Carlo

    long time …how goes it?

  110. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Tar – I read your response. The person was obviously imitating all of us, including mick’s use of that styling. Maybe they were trying to make us think it was you by saying mickstra. I didn’t think you were the only one who referred to mickstra. I called him mickstradamus, I believe. Others may have said mickstra too.

Anyway, I have a very good idea about who it was, but unlike another poster here who comes on and blindly accuses me of being others and others being me – and always end up being wrong – I’ll keep my suspicions to myself.

I don’t believe for a minute it’s who you suspected.

    Back to the game.

  111. Triple Short of a Cycle October 28th, 2013 at 9:45 pm

why won’t any pitcher bust this moron inside???????

THE GREAT JONNY GOMES????? HE STRUCK OUT????

I never thought I’d see this day. Life just isn’t worth it anymore. The great Jonny Gomes struck out.

    SMH sadly.

  119. Tar October 28th, 2013 at 9:50 pm

    SO do you pinch hit?

Not sure of the state of their bullpen… but I say no. Let him go another inning.

  120. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:50 pm

It’s not amazing. He’s a Red Sox. The Yankees have only hit that fat pig 2 times in history. Saddening and maddening. Id hit him once a game, at least. Every time I went to a 3-0 count on him, Id drill him and make him feel some pain.

  121. charlestonchew October 28th, 2013 at 9:51 pm

The Red Sox are gonna win this thing.

  122. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:52 pm

Life isnt worth it because Boston owns and rules the world.

  123. yankinvegas October 28th, 2013 at 9:53 pm

It is truly amazing. This is the 6th baseball that we have lived in Las Vegas. I have obviously purchased MLB Extra Innings every year (by the way, it is by far the best thing about baseball). I watch every Yankees game + at least part of hundreds of other games, including many Boston games.
I see guys get drilled all the time. In 6 years, I think I’ve seen David Ortiz have to move his feet maybe 10 times. That’s an exaggeration, but unfortunately not a tremendous one. When we lived in Westchester, I thought it was only our pitchers who never came in on him, but I now realize that NOBODY does.
    Why????????????????????
Please, somebody answer it for me.
    Many thanks.

  124. chicken_stanley October 28th, 2013 at 9:54 pm

I’d love to see a 15-14 game ala the Phils and Jays way back. Wouldn’t want to see that all the time , just every once in a while. These low scoring games get a beit tedious for me … I was never a pitcher (at least after pony league) so maybe I’m just not attuned to that part of the game. Ok, I admit it – I’m not a baseball purist :)

  125. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 9:54 pm

Maybe if he gets drilled, it will be called intentional by the ump and then it will penalize the other team also?

  126. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 9:55 pm

who cares. hit the fat pig enough times, and eventually he’ll get injured or have to move away from the plate.

  141. yankinvegas October 28th, 2013 at 10:14 pm

I don’t want to hear how brilliant the Red Sox are – Gomes and Ross are stiffs!!! The Cardinals pitchers should be ashamed of themselves.
The Red Sox signed bums and have lucked out. If we signed Ross and Gomes, people would have laughed at us.
I can’t take this damn team anymore. A different POS every day.
    And now a bloop.
    This is unimaginably lucky.
Our bums are bums. The Boston bums get big hits night after night. At least drill Ortiz before the series ends.

  142. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 10:14 pm

“ball game over, world series over.”

I concede nothing except that going back the fenway toilet bowl down two games is not going to be easy for the Cards, if that should happen.

  143. Duh Innings II October 28th, 2013 at 10:15 pm

Wainwright sh it the bed again tonight.

The Cards’ offense is so pathetic no way they come back to win this game – I would be shocked if they did.

If the Red Sox win this game, World Series over, Red Sox win because you cannot win a World Series when your ace pitches like sh it in both of his starts much less drop two out of three at home.

  149. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 10:18 pm

    They can get to Lester.

    Will they?

  150. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 10:20 pm

Molina did get the tag. It just showed it you stupid fool McCarver.

  151. yankinvegas October 28th, 2013 at 10:22 pm

The way it’s going for Boston, Salty will probably hit a GS off Rosenthal in the bottom of the 9th Wed to win the game by 1 run.
Salty will be hitting because the Cards finally drilled Ortiz and his needles fell out of his pocket forcing hos ejection

  152. Carlo October 28th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Tar – yes, my outlook is that come 2015, the new recruits (cuse/lville) are atop the league. And another fking line drive right at someone. Yet bogarts hits 50 ground balls up the middle and they haven’t budged the middle infielders an inch yet.

  153. Duh Innings II October 28th, 2013 at 10:25 pm

    The Cardinals are toast.

    13 runs in 5 games.

They couldn’t even smack around Peavy and a weakened Bucholz.

  154. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

They cant even employ the shift properly. All series, the shift has been incorrectly employed.

  155. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 28th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

Makes me wonder if Boegarts might be getting by with a little chemical help. Reason? They say his mentor is none other than Ortiz.

Also, can you think of any other team in the majors where their two top pitchers have been accused of cheating? How about even one of their pitchers?

And Ortiz, at his age, just knocking the cover off the ball?

    Nice isn’t it?

  156. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Bogaerts actually understands the value of going up the middle for base hits. No Yankee and thus far, no Cardinal I’ve seen, understands that. It’s more than chemical help. It’s also brains.

You’d think it’d be these white losers like Carpenter, Robinson, Kozma, Descalso using their brains at the plate.

Instead, it’s the Dominicans and Hispanics with the brains. Who’da thunk it.

I guess the United States education system is extremely terrible.

  157. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 10:34 pm

US education is terrible. Just using the lack of intelligence of these white guys over these non-Americans as an illustrative point.

  158. mick October 28th, 2013 at 10:34 pm

And Ortiz, at his age, just knocking the cover off the ball?
    ======================
This is Exhibit A of steroids damage to the game.
Fans have to ask if it is real or chemicals.
    Destroys credibility of the game.

  159. Pat M. October 28th, 2013 at 10:35 pm

As difficult as it is for people to accept this, the 2013 Boston Red Sox are a damn fine ballclub, and they’re costing me a few hundred bucks . They don’t have the best players per say, but they the exceed the sum of their parts

  160. Norester October 28th, 2013 at 10:36 pm

I shouldnt even have bothered to learn these white losers’ names. They’re not deserving of knowing their names.

It’s Pete Carpeneter. Or Kozma Robinson.

And then you throw in the little chinky Hawaii’an getting picked off to end a WS game.

He thought he was cool, but he was Wong.

Wong didn’t see the pickoff coming because his eyes were half shut.

  211. Duh Innings II October 28th, 2013 at 11:19 pm

Let’s go all the way back to 1983, three decades ago. Name me ONE WS game where a team was accused of cheating before Game 1 of this WS. I honestly can’t think of any.

Even Lester incriminated himself with his own Tweet.

Why accuse the Red Sox of cheating in a WS game now? Why not 2004 and/or 2007 as well? I’m not talking a player taking PEDs, I’m talking a player using hair gel or some other substance in the pitching glove.

What makes this WS tainted even more is the Red Sox even played dirty in a game they lost (the walk-off obstruction game.)

I think the Cards are toast, but maybe their bats wake up in Game 6 and if they do the Red Sox are in trouble because Peavy is not a guy you want to pitch Game 7. He’s a good pitcher overall but not an ace or ace-like guy, at least not this year. He’s not as good as Lester or Bucholz. If I’m Boston I pray for a rainout so Lester could pitch Game 7.

  215. yankinvegas October 28th, 2013 at 11:22 pm

I listened to the last 2 innings on radio. Shulman and Orel are more down the middle . But after Ortiz was interviewed, they both gushed over his nickname “Cooperstown” and speculated about the bump he will get because of his postseason success. Disappointingly, neither of them mentioned steroids. Why does no one EVER mention steroids with this guy, yet people kill Pettitte over HGH?
It’s unusual to say the least why he skates. Yes, he is a nice guy. So is AP. And I’m sure many of the other players who tested positive are great guys too, who just made a mistake. Manny Ramirez was a nice guy too, loved by opposing players, played for Boston and he doesn’t skate.
What makes this guy different from EVERYONE else?

Just go back and read a nights worth of posting from 3 or 4 years ago tonight. What you see and read is a blog site that is laced with great baseball insights for not only what’s on the field, but in the front offices not only in the Bronx but around the game. This place has become a supermarket National Esquirer type blog….We no longer break down at bats or even the games but rather get mud slinging based on beliefs tha The Red Sox are cheating or are getting away with consuming drugs of sorts rather than watching that players approach to that at bat vs how the cheating pitcher’s stratergy to get that cheating hitter out. One thing both sides can agree on is that Ortiz is much brighter than Arod and his chemist deserves much credit too.

  252. rr212 October 29th, 2013 at 7:30 am

    And he is more “clutch”.

  253. pat October 29th, 2013 at 7:31 am

I can appreciate Ortiz’s ability to hit a baseball and still not trust that he was always drug free when doing it. PEDs alone don’t make a player. They enhance talent not give it to someone without it. What I don’t appreciate is that writers/baseball and fans don’t hold him to the same scrutiny they do others. TJ Quinn, ESPN investigative reporter and one of the networks front men on PED issues tweeted last night,

    TJQuinnESPN
For those asking: Ortiz tested + for unknown (to us) substance during ’03 survey. Never had due process, so can’t call it a “failed” test.

I know I’ve heard them call it a failed test with others.

I spent all last week with a Sox fan who is shocked that every team doesn’t “drill Papi in the ass every game for swinging at the ball, going back to the dugout to get binoculars to watch it sail before leaving the box” or “mugging at the umpire for every strike that goes against him”
Not all Sox fans are blind just like not all Yankee fans are blind. It’s often the vocal ones that are so it gives that impression to the others.

  254. austinmac October 29th, 2013 at 7:54 am

I would like the Yankee fans to look at what went wrong and how to fix it with the Yankees rather than blaming unsubstantiated PED claims. What went wrong is an abysmal roster with a weak farm system.

I suppose all the Red Sox farm players cheated their way to the no.1 farm system. Getting in touch with reality can be a good thing. Perhaps, many prefer blaming others irrespective of the facts.

  255. Doreen October 29th, 2013 at 7:55 am

    pat,

That’s exactly my sentiments about both Ortiz and his ability, as well as about the double standard that sure seems to exist.

  256. randy l. October 29th, 2013 at 7:59 am

if somehow david ortiz is cheating, then the whole game of baseball isn’t worth watching because everyone is tested for PEDS. if the testing program is that bad that would allow one player to cheat like some of you are saying, then it would mean the testing doesn’t work at all.

if drug testing doesn’t work at all, why is anyone watching or caring ?

if derek jeter and mariano rivera and andy petttite and jorge posada are having breakfast at a team hotel and david ortiz walks in , is he sitting with them or not ? are they happy to see him?

…and if there’s a table on the other side of the breakfast room with three yankee fans sending out catcalls to ortiz that he’s fat, that he’s slime, and that he’s a cheater, do you think these yankee players back up ortiz or do they back the yankee fans sending the catcalls over to ortiz?

use your heads folks. look to yankee greats to tell you how you should act. if your behavior is at odds with jeter, rivera, posada, and pettitte that should tell you something.

  257. Tar October 29th, 2013 at 8:00 am

    Pat

    as usual… great post

  258. randy l. October 29th, 2013 at 8:07 am

    pat,

as far as drilling ortiz, i would do that in a heartbeat as a catcher because in my mind he can have half the plate , but not all of it. he takes all of it. this isn’t about cheating using PEDS though. this is just plain unwritten rules of baseball.

i’d feed ortiz a steady diet of high up and in heat. i;d move his feet with sliders in the dirt at his ankles.

why the yankees don’t do this i’m not sure. ortiz seems to get hit less than an average hitter though i don’t know the actual stats. jeter gets hit a lot because he takes the whole plate too and dives in. a lot of hitter do.

as an athlete , i’d be embarrassed to say someone else beat me by cheating when we we’re both tested by the same testing program. you can tell a lot about someone by how they handle losing. when they blame it all on someone else, you know all you to know about them.

  259. Doreen October 29th, 2013 at 8:11 am

    Randy,

That those fellows are friendly with Ortiz really has nothing to do with whether or not he has used PEDs. After all, Andy admitted to using HGH and I think they like him, right? And ARod admitted to using PEDs and his teammates at least seem to be on good terms with him, too. It is possible that Ortiz has used HGH or other PEDs and is also someone that people in his profession like, “a nice guy.”

  260. randy l. October 29th, 2013 at 8:21 am

    doreen-

“That those fellows are friendly with Ortiz really has nothing to do with whether or not he has used PED”

i disagree, because if bonds walks in that breakfast room, he gets a totally different reaction. or canseco. now if manny walks in they’re all laughing and manny is sitting down and they’re all having a good time.

so i’m amending my disagreement a little.

but ask yourself this, if the greatest yankee players in our generation don’t care about what ortiz did back in 2003, why should we. why the vitriol?

seriously, if people really think that ortiz is good because he’s cheating now in these world series, then everyone should just turn off their tvs and electronic devices and do something else.

to me it’s just sour grapes to say ortiz is doing what he’s doing because of PEDS.
i think people that say this are letting their fandom get a little carried away.

  261. austinmac October 29th, 2013 at 8:22 am

    Doreen,

Could it be the Yankee players don’t convict Ortiz without evidence of use for ten years? Good play is not enough. The same accusers were accusing Chris Davis. Suspicion is fine, and I get it, but acting as if we have evidence is absurd, in my opinion.

  262. austinmac October 29th, 2013 at 8:29 am

    Randy,

Blaming others and the system for your own team’s failure avoids the need to look at the team’s part. Injuries, bad breaks and cheaters are the reasons we lost. The blames are the same ones who say the team never makes mistakes.

  263. randy l. October 29th, 2013 at 8:36 am

    austimac-

i think we all get the concept of cheating with PEDS. i’ll tell you the time i used to get the most pissed off with an opponent using steroids heavily and that was playing hiigh level two person beach volleyball.

there was a guy from south africa who was on coke and steroids and who sudenly started jumping through the roof and blocking and spiking like a demon. he was also threatening to kill anyone who looked at him cross-eyed.

did he become the best player on the beach ? not really, because there’s always a way to beat someone. for one thing, because he was such an a hole he could never get a good partner and we’d pick on his weaker partner and still beat him.

the attitude to take when confronted with a cheater is to figure out a way to beat him. i don’t ever remember complaining afterward when we lost to the guy, that it was because of cheating even though we knew that steroids were cheating.
as an athlete , the mindset is figure ut a way to win.

maybe my biggest difference with fans who complain about ortiz is that as an athlete my reaction is just figure out a way to win.

do i think ortiz does steroids ? no, i think would have been caiught by testing if he was doing them. do i think he may be using HGH or some other PED like that? yeah, maybe.

do i care? no, because i don’t think HGH is in the category that steroids are.
do i care because someone breaks a rule that is probably stupid to begin with? not really.

  264. Doreen October 29th, 2013 at 8:36 am

    Randy/Austinmac,

It would strain the definition to call either Bonds and Canseco “nice guys.”.

I’m not saying that Ortiz is a creation of a chemical lab (neither was Bonds). He has the ability. He knows how to hit and approach an at-bat. He is deadly in clutch situations and has been for years. I don’t think that comes out of a lab. I do think that pitchers in general not moving him off the plate has a lot to do with a confidence factor.

But HGH was not tested for prior to this season, and that’s what I would think has helped Ortiz to come back strong these last couple of years, from some difficult injuries that made him look jst about finished twice I don’t think it is outside the realm of possibility.

As for how players are with each other, they Are basically comrades in arms, plus they actually know each other as people, unlike we who see one dimension, one times two.

I do think you have to question the drug testing. Are they not getting that many positives because the testing is working as a deterrent? Or are the players able to work the system and only the careless get caught? Or are there fewer players cheating than anyone would guess?

  265. randy l. October 29th, 2013 at 8:38 am

hey, what’s up with no MTU and no blake?

    what’s breakfast club without them?

  266. Doreen October 29th, 2013 at 8:39 am

Also, I don’t blame the Red Sox for the Yankees shortcomings.

The Red Sox are having a great year. I think they are getting more from some players than even they hoped, plus don’t underestimate the effect having Uehara has had. We should know, having had Mariano all these years, the confidence that can build in a team that knows all they have to do is take a lead into the 8th and they’re golden.

Plus evey player on that team works an at bat.

  267. blake October 29th, 2013 at 8:47 am

Morning all…..I’m not very happy with the baseball gods right now

  268. randy l. October 29th, 2013 at 9:02 am

    doreen-

we’re not having this discussion this morning if it weren’t for three or four people last night going on and on about ortiz cheating.

i think we should switch the conversation as you did to ” is testing working”?

the ne thing that surprises me about ortiz is that almost always big bodied first baseman like him get old fast. mo vaughn, cecil fielder, etc

ortiz seemed on this path a few years ago and then he came back from a serious decline. so how did he do this. how is he so agile? how are his eyes still seeing the ball so well?
these are things i’d like to know.

if it is HGH, then HGH testing needs to be looked at and okayed for everyone or they need to find a test for it and ban it’s use. i don’t see why they couldn’t do blood tests now and keep the blood for testing even ten years later when testing will be better.

the threat of later testing would also be an added deterrent.
but for now, i don’t think the red sox are one win from another world series win. i think they are just a pretty good baseball team.

i also think they could fall apart next year if a few things go in the other direction. saltalmacchia and ells bury are likely gone. catcher and centterfield are important. it depends on how the red sox fill those spots.

it also depends on whether the yankees decide to compete with the red sox or not. a strong yankee team take more than a few red sox victories away. this red sox team doesn’t beat the yankees of three or four years ago.

not even close. the yankees have just declined so much this red sox team looks good by comparison.
hopefully the yankees take up the challenge to respond to the red sox success.

    that’s what we’re looking .

C’est l’un des derniers produits saisonniers que l’on ne trouve pas toute l’ann??e. Manger des cerises en novembre ou des hu?tres en juillet? Pas de probl??me. Croquer du marron glac?? en plein ??t??? Quelle id??e!

Designer bags have come to be the quintessential status symbol. These high end designer bags exist for the consumption of society’s elite circles and are not meant for the masses, so naturally, everyone wants to own one. Unfortunately, only a select few can afford to do so. Many people found a solution to this problem in counterfeit designer bags. Although some fake versions are cheap knockoffs, others sold at higher prices look and feel very much like their original counterparts. In this case, it’s hard to tell the counterfeit from the genuine unless a professional does a very close and thorough inspection.
