BBWAA awards finalists announced (Yankees shut out)

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Nov 05, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Finalists for the BBWAA awards were announced tonight, with no Yankees making the cut. The finalists are basically the top three vote-getters for each award, so it’s not a big surprise that the Yankees were shut out. Their best shot might have been Joe Girardi cracking the top three for Manager of the Year. My vote this year was for MVP.

Award winners will be announced next week. Here are the finalists.

AL Rookie of the Year: Chris Archer, Jose Iglesias, Wil Myers
NL Rookie of the Year: Jose Fernandez, Shelby Miller, Yasiel Puig

AL Manager of the Year: John Farrell, Terry Francona, Bob Melvin
NL Manager of the Year: Fredi Gonzalez, Clint Hurdle, Don Mattingly

AL Cy Young Award: Yu Darvish, Hisashi Iwakuma, Max Scherzer
NL Cy Young Award: Jose Fernandez, Clayton Kershaw, Adam Wainwright

AL Most Valuable Player: Miguel Cabrera, Chris Davis, Mike Trout
NL Most Valuable Player: Paul Goldschmidt, Andrew McCutchen, Yadier Molina

Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny says that another club has already made an offer to free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran, tweets Jim Bowden of SiriusXM. The veteran figures to garner a great deal of interest this winter and it looks like his interest in the Yankees is finally being reciprocated.

AL Cy Young Award: Yu Darvish, Hisashi Iwakuma, Max Scherzer

I suggested the Yankees sign Iwakuma last offseason. :(

Whoah whoah whoah where is Anibal Sanchez in the Cy voting? He led the A.L. in ERA, posted a 1.154 WHIP, and struck out 202 batters in 182 IP. And where is Bartolo Colon in the voting? He posted a 2.65 ERA (second lowest ERA in the A.L?) and 1.166 WHIP in 190 1/3 IP across 30 starts at age 40. Top three is too short a list – make it five.

I see Pittsburgh didn’t make A.J. Burnett a qualifying offer. How ’bout the Yanks re-sign him for a year and $8.5M to actually pitch for them since they paid $8.5M of his 2013 salary and he didn’t throw a single pitch for them in 2013?

    Sabathia $23M
    Kuroda $16M for 2014 only
Tanaka $11M a year for six years
    Nova $2M
    Burnett $8.5M for 2014 only

    $60.5M vs. the $57.7256M they spent on Sabathia/Kuroda/Pettitte/Hughes/Nova in 2013, only $2.2744M.

If Burnett sucks make him a long reliever or trade him and start Pineda, Phelps, Warren, or Nuno for an extra $500K cost ($61M total rotation cost or still $60.5M if any of these starters is already in the bullpen.)

  4. Duh Innings II November 6th, 2013 at 3:53 am

Under my idea above the Yanks are turning Pettitte’s $12M into Tanaka’s first year of salary ($11M) and a $1M raise to keep Kuroda, paying the same for Burnett as they paid towards him this year, and giving Nova a measly $1,424,400 raise they could pay from clearing the $1.5M blown on Boesch. Sabathia makes the same as he’s made every year since 2009.

no question Max Scherzer wins CY

  7. blake November 6th, 2013 at 6:58 am

So the Yankees finally want Beltran now that he’s 37 ? Typical

  8. jpb173 November 6th, 2013 at 7:30 am

The Yankees have to be careful about spending a lot of money on this free agent class. This class simply isn’t that good…it may be a good year to choose to be below the luxury tax threshold.

Obviously there are many holes to fill on this team so some free agents need to be signed, but spending an extreme amount of money on this class would be a waste. I know there are some on this forum who are paid by the union and agents to create a craze for big $$$ Yankee spending but I think even they can recognize that this isn’t a great FA class.

In the past the Yankees could use free agency to “add on” pieces to a solid core of winning stars (Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettitte). But that core is now gone (except for Jeter who may be a mere shell of his former self). The task now is to rebuild the team and they will need to develop younger players to accelerate that process. Spending big on mediocre free agents will be more counter productive than helpful.

  9. 86w183 November 6th, 2013 at 7:49 am

    Good morning all —–

Hey Carlos, if you want to be a Yankee just tell them you’ll take whatever they want to pay in order to wear the pinstripes.

I don’t think anyone out there should hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

  10. blake November 6th, 2013 at 7:52 am

Id be fine with them signing Beltran but it’s pointless if they aren’t going to sign more than just him…..if they are gonna lose the draft pick for one player then it should be Choo ….(not that I recommend losing it for any one player)

  11. astrocityfan November 6th, 2013 at 8:09 am

well so far the yankees have been linked to Beltran and McCann (per mlbtraderumors) and they have reportedly called about Brandon Phillips and Omar Infante. At least this part is still like the old days when every available player was linked to the team. I just wonder how much of it is true.

  12. 86w183 November 6th, 2013 at 8:13 am

I’d like to see them target a few non-compensation guys:

    AJ Pierzinki or Jarred Saltalamacchia

    Jhonny Peralta or Omar Infante

Matt Garza or Ricky Nolasco or Scott Kazmir

Those guys could make the team better, not cost a fortune and more importantly not cost them that middle first round pick.

  13. Shame Spencer November 6th, 2013 at 8:29 am

If they go after Beltran it would cost them big AAV money but would be a short term deal… maybe that’s what they’ll try to do? Get guys on no more than 4 year deals and work on resetting the LT later…?? Wishful thinking? Probably.

  14. ron November 6th, 2013 at 8:32 am

The quickest way to rebuild is to draft 21,22 year old college kids like cole, where they can be in the majors within 2 years. When you are on top,and have a nice core, then you can draft high school kids with high upside.
Right now we should be drafting college kids, and signing international players, then sprinkle some free agents in.

    Quick draft story below.

On the Nationals’ draft board the night of June 4, 2012, the name Michael Wacha sat in the middle of their top 30 prospects. Scouting director Kris Kline had twice watched the 6-foot-6 right-hander from Texas A&M pitch in person. The first came at Pepperdine – “probably the fastest college game I ever saw,” Kline said. The second came when Wacha lost a showdown against Oklahoma State stud lefty Andrew Heaney, whom the Marlins would pick ninth.

When Kline watched Wacha, he saw a big leaguer in the making. His arm angle created downward action to his high-90s fastball and devastating changeup. Wacha’s curveball was so-so and he rarely threw it. The Nationals’ area scout in Texas, Jimmy Gonzalez, had come to know Wacha and believed his makeup was first-rate. The Nationals would have been pleased to pick him.

But as their pick, No. 16 overall, approached, another name remained ahead of Wacha’s. “They were almost back-to-back on our board, or at least very close,” Kline said. “We actually had Giolito higher.”

The Nationals, like the other 18 teams who picked before the St. Louis Cardinals that night, passed on Wacha. They instead selected Lucas Giolito, a 17-year-old high school right-hander from California with a 100-mph fastball and an elbow injury. Three picks later, with the draft choice they gained as compensation for Albert Pujols leaving in free agency, the Cardinals took Wacha.

Tonight, not even 17 months after the Cardinals drafted him, Wacha will carry a 0.43 postseason ERA into his start in Game 2 of the World Series. Before you start banging your palm into your forehead, know this first: Even as Wacha has become the most compelling figure of the postseason and earned the NLCS MVP award, the Nationals have no doubts.

  15. Doreen November 6th, 2013 at 8:33 am

I’m sure they are checking everyone out. They checked everyone out last year too. What they actually do after that is what is up in the air.

My first inclination was no on Saltalalalala, but he was such a highly-touted young player at one time, you do have to wonder if he was just late in getting there? However, you also have to wonder why the Red Sox don’t want him back.

McCann might prove too expensive, and his contract too long, which could be problematic insofar as having the room for system players.

Ruiz intrigues me, but I didn’t realize how hold he is, as well.

AJP seems like a good one-year fit, but the Star Ledger this A.M. said the Yankees have a concern about his defensive abilities slipping. I have no idea if this is a real concern or even worthy of concern.

It really should be interesting to see how everything goes, ESPECIALLY if Cano ends up somewhere else.

  16. Doreen November 6th, 2013 at 8:34 am

**Old, not Hold on Ruiz. SMH

  17. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:34 am

    Morning.

    I agree w 86′s take above.

That’s what I’d like to see as well.

    ;)

  18. Shame Spencer November 6th, 2013 at 8:38 am

Doreen – The Sox have a great catching prospect that’s ready to hit and still have Ross signed. I still think the Sox might offer him a short term/low money deal and knowing them he’ll take it.

  19. austinmac November 6th, 2013 at 8:38 am

I don’t remember(maybe old age)much talk about the team checking out much last year. All I recall is reading about the players we weren’t interested in.

I am willing to lose the pick, especially after seeing the crapshoot shown by Chad, for McCann or Choo. Then, add from their. Add a lot from there.

  20. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:41 am

The Sux have been in contact w. Salta so they at least have some interest in bringing him back.

I have some concerns about his D.

    Blake-

Going after Beltran a good or a bad sign ?

Depends on what other moves they make I guess.

I think we both agreed that you don’t surrender that draft pick for Beltran alone.

    ;)

  21. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:43 am

When you talk about all these potential additions I hope you realize that that means Hal is busting 189 ?

I’ll still believe that when I see it.

    ;)

  22. ron November 6th, 2013 at 8:44 am

The Yankees have to take advantage of a compensation design that mlb did not intend, where top revenue teams get draft picks, after giving qualifying offers to players.
It was designed for small revenue teams to get compensation picks when the big bad Yankees stole all the free agents from them.

The Yankees should protect all of their picks til they have a new, young core in place, and if they draft older college kids,it can be done quickly.
The bottom line is,teams still have to take the right picks in the draft.

  23. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:45 am

The only way that all might fit within the budget is if A-Rod’s suspension is at least 100 games and Cano does not return.

That would give them an extra 35-40 mil to play with.

Cano’s money buys 2 or 3 decent players.

  24. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:47 am

    Ron-

I’d like to see an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary approach to rebuilding.

I want those draft picks and I want to see if the Farm finally bears more fruit.

The biggest single impact moves the Yankees could make this OS would be to get Tanaka and Castro.

Those 2 alone would make me real :) .

  25. ron November 6th, 2013 at 8:48 am

So the cardinals compensation pick for not signing pujols to a 200-300 million,7-10 year contract was wacha.
Why are they winning every year, and in the ws a lot lately??

  26. AAA November 6th, 2013 at 8:48 am

I suggested the Yankees sign Iwakuma last offseason.

    ================================

Iwakuma re-upped with Seattle about 4 seconds after the World Series was over last year. That would sorta suggest he had little to no interest in leaving the Mariners.

  27. Shame Spencer November 6th, 2013 at 8:49 am

I’ve been on the fence mostly.. but I’d rather take this off season to build a competitive team that can stay that way for a couple of seasons than avoid that just to get a mid-first round pick. The key word of course is ‘competitive’ and whether Hal and I see a competitive team as being the same thing.

  28. blake November 6th, 2013 at 8:49 am

“Going after Beltran a good or a bad sign ?”

I mean it’s really hard to say……if going after Beltran means they are ditching 189 and that they are also gonna sign McCann, and Tanaka, and Peralta etc then sure that’s cool and I’d live with losing the draft pick.

If it means they are gonna sign Beltran and say “look we fixed the offense and this is a title team again” then no it means they are dumb and they gave away their best draft pick in years for nothing.

  29. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:49 am

And I think Peralta is a good get.

He hits and he can play a number of positions of need.

Kind of like of like a real good SU guy.

    ;)

  30. MTU November 6th, 2013 at 8:51 am

    Exactly Blake.

    That’s what we’ve talked about.

I am still skeptical that the Brass have decided to deep six 189.

I’ll say I was wrong if they do.

    ;)

  31. blake November 6th, 2013 at 8:53 am

personally I think the Yankees should try to bring back Cano if he will be reasonable….then attempt to sign as many players as will fit that do not require the loss of the draft pick and then shop the trade market for other things they need.

I think they “could” build a team that could win a title next year this way……a lot would have to go right but it’s possible.

Signing Cano, Kuroda, and Granderson along with Tanaka, Salty and Peralta would make the club at least presentable.

The Yankees have a lot of decisions to make this winter……these decisions could have lasting effects for years so lets hope they make the right ones.

  32. blake November 6th, 2013 at 8:55 am

I think they should try to get Granderson back on a short deal rather than pursue Beltran to be honest……Granderson is younger and wouldn’t cost them the draft pick and is probably better defensively at this point in their careers.

If Beltran was younger then it would be different but he’s 37 and his OBP has declined each of the last 3 seasons……we all know that if the Yankees give him a 3 year deal then he will turn into the corpse of Carlos Beltran before the end of 2014…….it’s just inevitable after they passed on him twice when he was younger.

  33. wanzies222 November 6th, 2013 at 8:55 am

    Morning…

MTU – I’ll repeat my guess from yesterday – I believe Hal sees the correlation between W-L and bottom line (in real $$, not just ego satisfaction, a la George). A deferral of Plan 189 makes sense.

  34. ron November 6th, 2013 at 8:56 am

The bottom line is,the Yankees are going to need at least 4 players to represent a new core before anything else can happen.
They can be different degrees of greatness, meaning, they all don,t have to be the greatest players, but they have to be good enough, and they have to be cheap, and anchor their positions for years.
Now you can draft them from hs,or college, trade for them,or a combination of all of the above. It is very hard to trade for them,as teams do not give up young studs, but it does happen, but luck is involved.

  35. Shame Spencer November 6th, 2013 at 8:57 am

Must see story for any football fans out there (or fans of kids and all sorts of good, warm feelings): http://elitedaily.com/news/wor.....eam-video/

  36. AAA November 6th, 2013 at 8:57 am

I am still skeptical that the Brass have decided to deep six 189

    ============================

Like I said yesterday, if they do decide to say “screw the $189M”, they’re locking themselves into that thru 2016. There won’t be any going back. So deciding on deep sixing it this year means deep sixing thru the end of the current CBA.

  37. 86w183 November 6th, 2013 at 8:59 am

I don’t care about anyone’s “D” behind the plate. It’s the most overrated thing in baseball as far as I’m concerned because there is so little base stealing these days.

Only two teams in the AL (Texas, Kansas City) stole more than 125 bases and only one (Milwaukee) in the NL did. No catcher threw out as many as 40 base stealers this season. One guy every four games is not a priority.

I AM concerned about a catcher’s ability to relate to and work with pitchers. THAT does matter.

  38. wanzies222 November 6th, 2013 at 9:00 am

AAA – Exactly. The “plan” was to have the reduction in salary coincide with the arrival at the ML level of the farmhands.

    Oops, missed that one.

If corporate is smart, they will redesign the timeline and buy their way to 2017.

  39. blake November 6th, 2013 at 9:00 am

“I’ll repeat my guess from yesterday – I believe Hal sees the correlation between W-L and bottom line (in real $$, not just ego satisfaction, a la George). A deferral of Plan 189 makes sense.”

you have to believe that Hal has had his people estimate how much revenue they lost by missing the playoffs……I mean all they have to do is compare 2012 going to the ALCS to missing the playoffs in 2013 to get an idea of how much cash they lost out on. Getting under the cap makes no sense if you’re the Yankees if you’re not good enough to make the playoffs…..it’s counter productive.

  40. Tackelberry November 6th, 2013 at 9:01 am

I agree with 86w that I would target guys who do not require draft pick comp like Peralta and Salty first. If they are gonna forfeit the pick, ti should be for a guy like Choo or McAnn, not Beltran

I lean this way as well……….not sure the FAs that require draft pick compensation are worth the money they are asking. The only one that is a >$100 Million player (in my opinion) is Cano

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

These ideas additionally worked to be a great way to recognize that other people have the same dream just as mine to know a great deal more when it comes to this problem. I am certain there are many more pleasurable periods ahead for many who look over your website.

I intended to send you one very small word to help say thanks as before relating to the beautiful advice you’ve contributed in this article. It is particularly generous with people like you to offer easily exactly what most of us could have supplied as an e-book in making some profit for their own end, even more so considering the fact that you could possibly have done it if you desired. The inspiring ideas also worked like a great way to be aware that many people have the same zeal really like my own to see more and more in regard to this matter. I know there are a lot more enjoyable sessions up front for individuals that go through your blog post.
