Free agent market open to all teams

Cano (2)

The market is open.

Last night at one minute past midnight, free agents became available to all teams. That means free agent market has been open for nine hours or so. It usually takes a bit longer than that for the hot stove to truly heat up, and there will be some buzz on Monday when the GM Meetings kick off in Orlando. That’s usually an opportunity to lay some groundwork and get some face-to-face discussions rolling. The Winter Meetings — when things truly heat up — don’t start for another five weeks.

It’s still going to be quiet for a while, but we’ve made it to the point when signings and game-changing decisions are entirely possible. And with a roster full of holes, the Yankees are in for an interesting winter. It’s quite literally just getting started.

And, by the way, the finalist for the Baseball Writers Association of America Awards are being announced tonight on MLB Network. That means the MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, all of that good stuff. That announcement begins at 6 p.m. ET.

    Now you’re talkin’.

Let the real speculating and rumor flying begin! NY POst KenDavidoff predicts Yanks will resign Cano and Kuroda, and will end up with Tanaka and Choo.

  3. 4TrainNorth November 5th, 2013 at 9:17 am

Anyone read Verducci’s article in SI (“Gone Crazy”) on how baseball needs more modern enhancements? Just curious what folks think about this Bonus At-Bat idea. He’s really pushing it in the piece, which makes me think he came up with it (in which case: Ver-douchey).

Still, the dominance of young pitching is a little concerning to me. I like the idea that a young pitcher has to “learn to pitch” before he can really have success at the major-league level. But as the Cards seem to have shown, all it takes is a young arm with a big fastball.

And is this new wave of young guns solely responsible for the lack of offense, seen most strikingly in the postseason? Or is the suspected drop in PED use hard to ignore as a factor?

Also: Cano has a very real chance to become the greatest second baseman of the modern era. Anyone who says otherwise is on the crack rock. That said, interesting that no one mentioned the little one from Boston. I’m sure Sox fans think his name belongs in the coversation, however premature those notions might be.

The biggest thing that keeps Pedroia out of this conversation is his Fenway reliance.

His career OPS at home (.880) is WAY above his OPS on the road (.767).

Compare that with Cano’s (.858) at home and (.862) on the road.

He still thinks they will get under 189 but that Arod will get suspended enough to cover it.

I think they need a catcher and left side infielder if they seriously want to compete

  6. blake November 5th, 2013 at 9:53 am

Pedroia is a great player…..Cano is on another tier in an all time discussion

  7. MTU November 5th, 2013 at 9:54 am

    Blake-

    What.

You don’t think Adams, Musty, or Nuney can cut it at 3rd ?

Or that Cervy, Romine, or JR can do the same at C ?

    Heresy.

    :)

  8. MTU November 5th, 2013 at 9:55 am

    And what about Nixy ?

    Surely he’s good enough.

  9. Tackelberry November 5th, 2013 at 9:59 am

Saltilimoacchia is a natural fit on the Yanks. YOu don’t think Girardi is bubbling at the lips to start saying “Salty is doing a great job for us’ ?

  10. blake November 5th, 2013 at 9:59 am

    MTU,
    Nope!

  11. MTU November 5th, 2013 at 10:03 am

    I’m shocked !

  12. 4TrainNorth November 5th, 2013 at 10:09 am

I hope no one is even remotely OK with Bronson Arroyo coming to town. Mofo gave up 46 bombs a couple of years ago — 11 more than Hughes ever has. Can you imagine what would happen to this guy at YS?

  13. blake November 5th, 2013 at 10:11 am

Salty on a 2 or 3 year deal would be great…..

  14. MTU November 5th, 2013 at 10:17 am

    Blake-

Your trouble is you want everyone.

    :)

  15. mick November 5th, 2013 at 10:19 am

Making pioneer woman baked beans today!

  20. MTU November 5th, 2013 at 10:29 am

Mormons are always making pioneer baked beans.

What I really want is some of that dutch oven cobbler they make.

I might kill for some of that stuff.

    :)

  21. 86w183 November 5th, 2013 at 10:32 am

    4TrainNorth —–

Totally agree on Arroyo. Yanks need to find ground ball pitchers. Problem is the Yanks left side of the IF has about the same range as two statues in Central Park. Thus ground ball pitchers get punished by that lack of range.

I would definitely want to see how little guaranteed money Josh Johnson would take.

AJ Pierzinki might be more realistic/affordable than Saltalamacchia.

Off to do real work…. sorta…. later all

    Have a day

  22. AAA November 5th, 2013 at 10:35 am

Salty on a 2 or 3 year deal would be great…..

    =====================

He’ll hit some homers, but probably lose a lot of doubles. Also don’t imagine that .372 BABIP holds up.

  23. Shame Spencer November 5th, 2013 at 10:36 am

Who would be the cheapest/short term pitching options? Carlos Santana, Halladay, Colon, Johnson, Arroyo… does that sound about right? Who am I missing?

  24. blake November 5th, 2013 at 10:37 am

“He’ll hit some homers, but probably lose a lot of doubles. Also don’t imagine that .372 BABIP holds up.”

He’s improved offensively each of the last 3 years and is 28. He’d be a good stop gap i think

  25. Shame Spencer November 5th, 2013 at 10:38 am

If you can get a guy like Salty on a two year deal, I’d try it. There’s no other Yankee catcher on the club right now that will give you better offensive numbers than he will in 2014.

  26. mick November 5th, 2013 at 10:38 am

In my time I would rank Alomar, Morgan, Cano, Sanberg in that order.
    ============
    Jeff Kent.

  27. Shame Spencer November 5th, 2013 at 10:39 am

If they go with Navarro or AJP, fine… but I still can’t shake the feeling they aren’t going to do anything with the catching position. I hope they do, because that’s projecting to be a below average production spot next year.

  28. mick November 5th, 2013 at 10:41 am

If we can get Choo, Tanaka, Kuroda , Cano and Salty and stay under is that possible?
We would be the favorite for the division with that group.

    - TUESDAY MORNING MUSINGS -

Nice piece by Davidson\ NY Post about who he predicts is going where, for how much $$$ and how long. According to his numbers, the Yanks could get McCann and Infante for Cano’s anticipated money. BINGO
Numerous articles about A-Rod flunking that drug test in “06″, also added that it was unclear whether this was presented as part of MLB’s current case vs A-Rod. You can bet your sweet Bippy it was.
Very surprised the R\Sox QO’d Drew. They are back to diggin’ that hole the Dodgers pulled them out of. I say Drew takes that QO.

  32. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 10:51 am

    Make that “Davidoff”

  33. blake November 5th, 2013 at 10:55 am

“According to his numbers, the Yanks could get McCann and Infante for Cano’s anticipated money. BINGO”

Signing McCann and Infante instead of Cano won’t make them better or cheaper in AAV …..i

    ===============================

“There’s no such thing as a bad one year deal” – pretty much every GM in baseball

  35. blake November 5th, 2013 at 10:59 am

Drew might take the QO and you could make an argument he should…..but I don’t blame Boston at all for making it. SSs are extremely scarce and he’s a pretty good player……they could probably trade him at the deadline if they wanted

  36. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 11:04 am

With the hole we got at C, if you believe that Cano = Infante + McCann, Bellview becons.

  37. Shame Spencer November 5th, 2013 at 11:04 am

Like the Red Sox really need to care about digging a hole after they just won a WS.. their third in a decade.

  38. Shame Spencer November 5th, 2013 at 11:06 am

Like bigdan said, the first step is getting this team back to mediocrity before we can get it back to being a contender. Retaining Cano is a huge part of that IMO. Unless you’re significantly upgrading 4 other spots on the field without him, you need to retain him.

Sherman said in his piece that Cano doesn’t drive ticket sales.. I don’t know how they figure this stuff out, tbh. Mo played his final season in 2013 to lower attendance. If Mo isn’t enough, in his farewell season, to bring people out I really don’t know what is.

  39. AAA November 5th, 2013 at 11:07 am

With the hole we got at C, if you believe that Cano = Infante + McCann, Bellview becons

    ====================================

It’s a long, long way south from Cano to Infante. Cano/Chris Stewart > Infante/McCann

  40. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 11:08 am

EVERY team should be concerned about digging a hole, even if they have won 3 outta 10. George may have made a lotta mistakes, but he never rested on his laurels.

  41. blake November 5th, 2013 at 11:09 am

“It’s a long, long way south from Cano to Infante. Cano/Chris Stewart > Infante/McCann”

Even if you believe that’s equal then it doesn’t make them any better…..it only makes them the same as last year…..which is not very good and you have lost your first rounder in the process

  42. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 11:09 am

That piece by Sherman was his typical tripe. Lotta verbiage, while saying absolutely Nothing.

  43. blake November 5th, 2013 at 11:11 am

If the Yankees decide to lose that pick then it needs to come with signing Cano along with other players or it’s pointless and counter productive

  44. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 11:12 am

If I’m picking teams in the school yard, I gladly take Infante and McCann vs Stewart and Cano. VERY easy choice.

  45. blake November 5th, 2013 at 11:13 am

Sherman said they had 80 million to spend this winter in that piece…..as Axisa showed yestersay it’s really more like 50……and Cano will take half of that if they sign him

There is no way they can field a title contender under the cap unless Arods suspension is most of the season

  46. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 11:14 am

When the Yanks start sh*t canning people in their scouting dept, I’ll get concerned about draft picks. The current guys doing this have a track record that is Horrible.

Well that’s probably why your team always lost

  48. DONNYBROOK November 5th, 2013 at 11:15 am

I continue to say A-Rod gets 150 games in The Cooler.

  49. Shame Spencer November 5th, 2013 at 11:16 am

    ——————

And that, max, only gives them another $27.5 million to work with. So if Cano takes up half the of the $50 million available, you have another $50 million to get 2 starters, an OFer, and an INFer – minimum.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
