My MVP ballot

As expected, Miguel Cabrera has won the American League MVP award. I had an MVP vote this year, and this was my ballot.

1. Miguel Cabrera
2. Mike Trout
3. Chris Davis
4. Josh Donaldson
5. Robinson Cano
6. Evan Longoria
7. Adrian Beltre
8. Dustin Pedroia
9. Jacoby Ellsbury
10. Manny Machado

Oddly enough, I’m pretty sure I would have voted for Trout last year. This year, I was swayed by Cabrera’s absurd offensive season. I put considerable value into the WAR stat, but obviously I don’t consider it the end of the conversation. It’s a hard choice between those two, and it largely depends on what you value and how you interpret the award. I’m glad my vote is far from the only one that counts. I don’t want to pretend I have the perfect answers here, just an opinion.

As for the rest of my ballot, I thought the top five were pretty easy choices (in some order), and I decided pretty early that Nos. 6 and 7 should be in those spots (in some order). The final three were tough and changed several times in the weeks I was finalizing my ballot. I believe there were five different Red Sox I was considering, I thought about including Max Scherzer, and at one point I had Joe Mauer as high as eighth. The final decision to include Machado came literally on the final day before I submitted my choices.
