In time for Thanksgiving: CC Sabathia’s a good guy

CC Sabathia

I was going to include this in the previous post, but it’s not really news, and it’s a wonderful way to head into the Thanksgiving holiday. So let’s give it it’s own post.

Wayne Coffey gives us a nice look into the charitable work done by CC Sabathia and his wife Amber. There’s a great anecdote about CC offering to send some of his own shoes to a kid in California who was having a hard time finding shoes that fit. A lot of athletes make donations and do really nice work in the community, but it always strikes me just how present the Sabathia’s are for their charitable work. CC’s a very genuine guy, and he’s very much a part of the work he does. Nice story about Wayne, and very fitting for the upcoming holiday.

If you’re looking for more of a baseball story and not a feel-good Thanksgiving story: Here’s Sabathia on the Yankees attempts to re-sign Robinson Cano.

“As his friend, I know how difficult it is going through this process,” Sabathia said. “Everybody thinks it’s a fun time, but I know how stressful it can be. I won’t hound him about it. I know he has his representation, and they are doing what they can do with (Brian Cashman). We’ll see what happens, but I definitely want him to stay and I feel like he’s going to stay.”

    Chad,

    Good stuff on C.

    Standup guy, big heart.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  2. MTU November 27th, 2013 at 10:05 pm

    CC never forgot his roots.

I hope he has as big a season next year as he is a big Man.

    And yes, I second that.

    Have a great Thanksgiving Chad.

    You too JAP.

    :)

Ok. Tried to make myself useful by looking up Chris Owing’s stats. Last year in AAA his slash line was:

    .330 .359 .482 .841

Keep in mind the PCL is noted as a hitter’s league. His MiLB career slash is:

    .291 .320 .441 .761

Defensively, it looks like the majority of his time has been at SS, followed by LF, and a few games at 2B.

I’ve seen his name bandied about on here… Do you want him? and, if so, what do you think it would take to get him?

Hey gang, my apologies for the double post, as I just posted this in the last thread not realizing there was a new one.

I am conducting some research on sport viewing as part of my PhD work. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind taking a few minutes to take this short survey to help me out. Please note, this is not spam or anything, just an innocent academic survey. It does not ask for personal info or anything of the like. If you could help me out, it’d be greatly appreciated. If you don’t have time, no worries. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving, and let’s hope for a few early Christmas gifts from Steinbrenner & Co. as we approach Christmas. Thanks guys! Ben

Didi Gregorious: I couldn’t find any MiLB stats just MLB. Career slash (111 games):

    .255 .330 .369 .699

    Defensively, only played SS.

Gregorious is 23, Owings is 22

  7. MTU November 27th, 2013 at 10:14 pm

    Glenn-

    Absolutely.

It probably takes Romine, Murphy, or Cervelli and 2 quality cost controlled relievers like Claiborne and Betances.

They want a young C and relievers.

They might want to trade Gregorius instead though. Or Davidson.

  8. chicken_stanley November 27th, 2013 at 10:21 pm

    Matt Davidson career MiLB slash:

    .268 .351 .452 .803

Defensively 3B with a few games at 1B

    Also 22 yrs old

  9. chicken_stanley November 27th, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Davidson also appears to have some pop… 20, 23, and 17 hrs last 3 years

  10. tucker November 27th, 2013 at 10:27 pm

DBacks are pretty high on Gregorius. I’d be surprised if they trade him, but they do have a surplus.

    CC’s a quality human being.

  11. MTU November 27th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

    Tucker-

From what I hear they do.

And they match well with us.

They are looking for what we have a surplus of.

And on top of that Towers and Cashman are friends.

    And Towers owes Cash.

Maybe something will get done at the Winter meetings.

Our Teams can help each other.

    ;)

“Based on what? I mean at his age yes he’s close, but what exactly was wrong ( defensively) with his last uninjured year?”

No range….Jeters defense has always been better than the numbers say IMO but everything comes to an end

Happy thanksgiving JAP, Glenn, Blake, and all of lohudville.

    Blake,

We don’t celebrate it down here, but when I lived in the states it was my favorite time as well. Love the turkey and especially the gravy!!… Anyway have a great time tomorrow.

    MTU,

For me is like any other day down here… I have a couple of important meetings, but I’ll be around my friend.

  20. MTU November 27th, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Oh MTU, from your lips to God’s ear. BRENDAN RYAN!!!!! As always, I get to go to bed such a happy kid!

As a lover of pitching and defense, I’m over the moon with this one.

  24. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 12:36 am

“No range….Jeters defense has always been better than the numbers say IMO but everything comes to an end”

You have always been a big Jeter supporter, so I don’t take your opinion lightly. And it’s not that I think your wrong, maybe just wrong timing. I say he has at least 1 more good year at SS.

    Happy Thanksgivng Yankee fans

  25. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 12:42 am

I hope you guys don’t mean that Jeter was a good defender when you say his defense was better than the numbers say. He has had atrocious ‘eye test’ metrics beyond just defensive metrics for quite some time. Non existent first step, no range. I’ve already laid out how he loses to most short stops in conventional baseball stats outside of defensive ones. You have to twist your logic pretty far to make excuses for why he has 200 less outs made with similar chances than other short stops.

  26. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 12:44 am

In fact I think its pretty cruel for the Yankees to put Brendan Ryan on the team in Jeter’s last year because Ryan is an elite top class SS on defense. Jeter will look poor by comparison.

  27. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 12:44 am

    Nunez has great range.

  28. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 12:53 am

Do you have a point following behind that statement? Nunez can’t catch or throw.

  29. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 12:54 am

If you put a fine piece of art or a picture under a microscope, all you are going to see is some dots or pixels.

Now if you take your head out of your ……. ahh microscope, you will see the big, beautiful picture.

    Such is Jeter.

    :D

    Good night all

  30. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 12:56 am

So you’re saying if you took your own head out of your jeter worshiping behind you’d realize he isn’t a good defender? What a revelation for the cult of Jeter. Once you understand that praising him for his few good plays doesn’t absolve you of the total picture of his defense you will be truly enlightened.

  31. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 12:58 am

    “Nunez can’t catch or throw.”

    Grasshopper

There is so much more to playing SS or any other position than just range. You harp on Jeter’s probably only fault and make it seem fatal. Except he’s been playing like that at a high level for how many years now?

  32. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 1:03 am

There is so much more to playing SS or any other position than just range. You harp on Jeter’s probably only fault and make it seem fatal. Except he’s been playing like that at a high level for how many years now?

You are trying to disprove RANGE by pointing to Nunez when Nunez can’t do anything, so what is he going to do with his range? I’m sure Usain Bolt would have very good range in the outfield, but there are of course other baseball skills like throwing and catching.

The thing is that Jeter isn’t good enough at every other facet of the game to make up for his lack of range. You miss every ball you do not get to. Range being a FAULT for a defender is awful. It doesn’t matter if you’re safely catching balls in your zone if you are letting all the others drop in for hits.

That you think Jeter was playing the position at a high level for all these years is hilarious. He had 1 chance to move to an outfield position and once that went he had no where to go on the diamond where his bat would play.

Lets look this, Brendan Ryan vs Derek Jeter

Jeter played 1186.1 innings, Brendan Ryan 1170 innings. Jeter had 496 assists+putouts. Ryan had 593 assists+putouts. Thats with a team with a lower ground ball percentage. So he only made 100 more outs than Jeter in the field.

  33. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 1:09 am

Erick Aybar, in the same amount of innings as Jeter, also had 590 assists+putouts. JJ Hardy in around 300 more innings had nearly 300 more outs than Jeter in the field.

Almost every defender at short in baseball simply makes more outs in the field than Jeter. The reason Jeter stayed at short so long is because he could hit very well. Its not even like he was particularly steady at the position. Outside of 2 years he was always middle of the pack in errors.

  34. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:14 am

“The thing is that Jeter isn’t good enough at every other facet of the game to make up for his lack of range.”

This is the crux of the argument and where we really disagree. Not only that but you can’t look at Jeter and not look at the whole package. Offense , defense and intangibles.

And not to say I don’t believe you… but you really should provide a link ( if possible) when you throw numbers around like that. There may and probably are, other mitigating factors. ( that you may have innocently overlooked).

  35. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:16 am

The reason Jeter stayed at short so long is because he could hit very well”

So if you acknowledge this, why have you for years focused on and criticized his one fault?

  36. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:20 am

“Its not even like he was particularly steady at the position. Outside of 2 years he was always middle of the pack in errors.”

And this is just BS. Jeter is the epitome of steady.

  37. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 1:22 am

And this is just BS. Jeter is the epitome of steady.

How? He has double digit errors all but 3 years. You can find these numbers on fangraphs, sort by SS.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/stats.....osition=SS

  38. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 1:26 am

So if you acknowledge this, why have you for years focused on and criticized his one fault?

What does his offense have to do with him being a bad defender? What I have always dealt with on here is people taking exception to the idea that Jeter is a bad defender or that sabermetrics is out to get Jeter or that Jeter has some hidden attributes which mean the defensive metrics of any kind can be thrown out.

I would prefer you to ask yourself the same question: why can’t you acknowledge that he is a bad defender and just accept it was his bat keeping him there?

Honestly it would have been better had he moved to the outfield when Bernie was done since tracking flyballs is one of his pluses.

  39. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:33 am

    Thanks for the link.

in 2013 Ryan had a RZR of .759

    Jeter had .747

    Whats the big freaking deal?

And how do you explain that Jeter makes just as many or more OOZ plays than any of those guys? I would think someone with no range would not be making out of zone plays.

  40. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:38 am

“What I have always dealt with on here is people taking exception to the idea that Jeter is a bad defender or that sabermetrics is out to get Jeter or that Jeter has some hidden attributes which mean the defensive metrics of any kind can be thrown out.”

So in a nutshell, you are defending the integrity of saber stats to the point where there can be only one explanation…Yours.

“I would prefer you to ask yourself the same question: why can’t you acknowledge that he is a bad defender and just accept it was his bat keeping him there?”

Because he’s not a bad defender. He is a good defender who has always had limited range. As my example of Nunez pointed out….. it takes a lot more than range to play the position.

  41. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:40 am

And Aybar made 5 more errors. Ryan one less

  42. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 1:43 am

And how do you explain that Jeter makes just as many or more OOZ plays than any of those guys? I would think someone with no range would not be making out of zone plays.

You just compared Brendan Ryan’s 2013 to Jeter’s 2012. And out of zone plays count shifts, so if you’re shifted out of your zone or close to out of your zone you will get an out of zone credit.

If you add up all the in zone + ooz plays you will see how short Jeter is in terms of making outs.

  43. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:44 am

    JF

I’m really out this time. have a happy Thanksgiving.

  44. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 1:45 am

Because he’s not a bad defender. He is a good defender who has always had limited range. As my example of Nunez pointed out….. it takes a lot more than range to play the position.

But he isn’t a good defender, because he makes WAY LESS OUTS THAN EVERYONE ELSE AT THE POSITION.

How can one be good when you’re worse than your peers at the entire point of the position, to make outs? Aybar did make 5 more errors than Jeter, while converting 100 more outs than he did. I would take that any day. And if you consider errors as a function of chances to make an error, Aybar made 5 more errors while touching 100+ more balls than Jeter.

Basically most of the balls Jeter gets to are in his gift baskets, rather than the diamond.

  45. Tar November 28th, 2013 at 1:46 am

    2012 Jeter made 10 errors Ryan 9.

The Yankees don’t shift much, so I can’t see how that would help his numbers there. And I also think the Yankees suck at defensive positioning which can’t help him either.

    See ya

  46. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 2:05 am

    2012 Jeter made 10 errors Ryan 9.

Yea and Ryan made 100 more outs.

  47. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 2:10 am

The Yankees don’t shift much, so I can’t see how that would help his numbers there. And I also think the Yankees suck at defensive positioning which can’t help him either.

Every time Jeter tracks a pop up into the outfield/foul territory he is getting an ooz play, and the Yankees started shifting a lot in 2008.

  48. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 2:14 am

As my example of Nunez pointed out….. it takes a lot more than range to play the position.

It did not point out anything, because while you need more than range to be a good defender, you still NEED RANGE.

  49. bardos November 28th, 2013 at 2:16 am

Here’s my Sci-Fi suggestion for contracts. It does away with all uncertainties.

Establish an agreed upon formula, say WAR or some such sophisticated metric, to determine the value of a player’s seasonal output. Then at the end of the season, say in October, you look at the chart and see that such-and-such a WAR is equivalent to X dollars. Simple. You then pay out salary on that basis, on the basis of actual production, not as in the present system, something pre-paid based on hope.

  50. yankinvegas November 28th, 2013 at 2:49 am

The Yankees should offer Cano 200 million for 8 years right now. It’s not that much more than where they are already at. He will take it because hip people have to know that no team will come near it.
I believe that he has 5 big years left, so the contract will never become a real albatross. Plus in 2019 when he starts to slide, he can mentor Harper and/or Trout on how to be a Yankee. The only real negative to him as a player is that he doesn’t run out groundballs – there are PLENTY of star players who are guilty of the same offense. He will be a HoF homegrown Yankee and he will be part of some really good teams in the next 8 years.
    Just do it.

  51. theREALkevin November 28th, 2013 at 4:38 am

    Grasshopper lol

  52. Migs November 28th, 2013 at 5:05 am

Jeter hasn’t been a good defense in years. He’s old, what do you expect? He has passable for a while, but who knows what 2014 will bring.

He’s an all-time great, but defense has been a flaw of his for a long whiles now. Accept it, move on.

As for Cano, I wouldn’t give him 8 years. I would top out at 7, and even that has a chance of going real bad. He’s 31, I’m not paying for yesterday.

I’d rather sign Choo and Infante, then trade for Chase Headley, than sign Cano to an 8 yr big money deal. Add that in with McCann, and you have yourself a better team. Better baserunning, defense, and a deeper lineup.

Just think how thankful we should be for a real catcher!

What is your wish for a corner outfielder?

Beltran on a 2/28M with a vesting option for a third year at another 14M?

Choo on a 5/90M Pence full NTC deal with a few million more added per his agent, Boras?

Trade for Matt Kemp, knowing you might have to include one of the Yankees few bargaining chips, like DRob, Nova, Sanchez, others.

Just resign Granderson to a 3/45M and live with the strikeouts and declining BA?

Sign a reclamation player recovering from injury or down year, like Morse or Hart, or someone else?

    Current thoughts?

  60. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:13 am

    Good morning folks.

Have a great day eating and drinking w those you love. Give ‘em all a big hug.

And Blake is so right. The lines between healthy and sick, rich and poor, lucky and unlucky aren’t as well defined as one would think.

I will be around if anyone feels like chatting.

    The Mops don’t mind.

    How’s Lucky today?

  63. austinmac November 28th, 2013 at 8:17 am

    YT,

My choice would be Choo. Seven years younger than Beltran and keeps us from getting older. Honestly, I will be happy at this point in Yankee history to dd any of the good ones.

Kemp is by far the best if healthy, but trading for him would only open many more holes. They have plenty to fill as it is.

  64. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:19 am

    YT-

Getting a little better each day. No complications so far.

    Thanks for asking.

I always loved Thanksgiving. Hope you have a great one.

Mine will be a bit different this year. Quiet.

Guess I can be thankful for that.

    :)

  65. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:22 am

    Mac-

That also depends on whether the Dodgers just want to purge some salary or not ?

I think they’d prefer to dump Ethier or Crawford ahead of Kemp but who knows.

Kemp has had a lot of injuries. He’s somewhat risky.

  66. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:22 am

Kemp is a beast when he’s healthy.

  67. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:24 am

The Yankees should reel in Infante.

Then they can afford to wait on Cano.

  68. blake November 28th, 2013 at 8:25 am

I want kemp, Choo and Beltran .

  69. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:25 am

    Everyone disappeared.

You’d think it was a Holiday or something.

  70. Yankee Trader November 28th, 2013 at 8:26 am

The Yankees infield is one deep hole!

Tex- will he generate power from the left side with a recovering post surgical repair of the tendon sheath on his down right hand on the bat, or will we see pop outs and ground balls swallowed up by the shift.

Jeter -do the Yankees get the 2012 version, or is this going to be a year of more injury and decline?

And then there is 2nd and 3rd, where currently we have the likes of Nunez, Ryan, Adams, Anna

  71. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:27 am

    Blake-

And I want Infante, Nathan, Kuroda, and Tanaka.

    So we’re set.

    :)

  72. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:27 am

    And Cano.

  77. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:32 am

IMO Thanksgiving is a better Holiday than Xmas.

Xmas has lost it’s meaning. Turned into a commercial nightmare.

    Thanksgiving retains it’s original spirit.

    :)

    MTU-

    Where is the Wifey?

Wouldn’t Infante want a guarantee of a full time job?
If Cano comes back, Infante goes to third? He hasn’t played much third the last few years.

    MAC-
Choo would be the best bet if you want an OB machine and can Long fix his stroke vs lefties?

Blake- I’d take all three, Kemp, Choo and Beltran and use what’s leftover to get the Yankees a third baseman, another starter! :)

  79. blake November 28th, 2013 at 8:34 am

    I’m with MTU on infante

  80. Yankee Trader November 28th, 2013 at 8:46 am

So putting everything together we now might have this batting orde

    Choo LF
    Beltran RF
    Cano 2B
    Kemp CF
    McCann C
    Soriano DH
    Tex 1B
    Jeter SS
    Infante 3B

If everyone is healthy should be able to add another 200 runs, that they lost last season.

Yeah, I’m in on this scenario! :)

  81. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:46 am

    YT-

She had to go to CA. to be w a sick Sister.

Infante would get plenty of AB’s.

He’s better at 3rd than anyone we presently have.

    Good athlete.

    :)

  82. mick November 28th, 2013 at 8:46 am

Here are Cano’s alternating streaks June-Aug.

    4-30, 10-31, 4-17, 14-24, 4-19, 13-29, 6-44, 28-61, 10-41 (in order).

    Apr-May were, in order:

    3-23, 11-19, 3-15, 18-50, 5-24, 6-17, 9-48, 8-24.

  83. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:47 am

    YT-

Hal made a great start w McCann.

But he needs to finish the job to make it all worthwhile.

  84. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:50 am

    Blake-

I hope you are even more w me on Tanaka and Kuroda.

    They are really essential.

IMO even more essential than Cano who we at least have viable replacements for.

There is no comparable for Tanaka. And possibly not for Kuroda either.

    ;)

  85. mick November 28th, 2013 at 8:52 am

    Sept. for Cano, in order:

    18-42, 5-24, 11-27.

Alternating streaks of bad and good like clockwork thru the season.

    If that isn’t a streaky hitter I don’t know…

I’d still want to keep him.

  86. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:52 am

    YT-

W that lineup and the right pitching we run away with it.

    And breeze to #29.

    No one will touch us.

  87. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:54 am

having already put 28 in the bag.

    :)

  88. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 8:55 am

    Need Joe Nathan though.

Need to be able to shut the door.

  89. Yankee Trader November 28th, 2013 at 8:57 am

It’s looking like Hal has given Levine and Cashman the ability to negotiate with all potential targets, and it seems they might have reset the budget to an amount above the LT threshold!

I’m going to need to leave and help the wife with the turkey’s .

    Until later!
    BTW:

    ““Thanksgivukkah”

The convergence of the holidays came about because Thanksgiving, which is on the fourth Thursday of November, is as late in the month as it can be, and in the lunar Jewish calendar, the night of Nov. 27 is the earliest that Hanukkah can begin.

The last time this happened was in 1888 and, according to a blog written by physicist Jonathan Mizrahi of Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., it won’t happen again for nearly 78,000 years — although in 2070 and 2165, the first night of Hanukkah will fall on Thanksgiving night.

All the more reason to celebrate Thanksgivukkah in a major way.

  90. 86w183 November 28th, 2013 at 8:58 am

Good morning guys and Happy Thanksgiving

Guess the Hot Stove will cool off this weekend… doesn’t it usually?

What’s the price for Kemp? Nova + ? Can we include Ichiro? How about Wells but not the $$$ ? Now THAT would be a coup.

  91. austinmac November 28th, 2013 at 8:59 am

McCann was a great step, but it is the first of many needed on the tall staircase. They still have at least five remaining glaring holes. Infante would provide some Cano and AROD protection. We have to assume at least one of the two isn’t going to be around.

Then, add Choo and a right handed bat. Next, the rotation. The bullpen needs a decent lefty. We cannot rely on Cabral who hasn’t exactly torn up the minor leagues.

  92. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:00 am

    Have a joyous Holiday 86.

I’m ready to blow 189 to smithereens.

I just hope Hal is. He needs to finish what he started w McCann.

    :)

  93. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:01 am

    New one ——–>

  94. pkyankfan69 November 28th, 2013 at 9:01 am

    Choo LF
    Beltran RF
    Cano 2B
    Kemp CF
    McCann C
    Soriano DH
    Tex 1B
    Jeter SS
    Infante 3B
    ———————
This lineup would make me extra thankful!

    Happy Turkey Day!

  95. mick November 28th, 2013 at 9:06 am

In Cano’s alternating schedule of good and bad he hit .186 in 10 bad streaks.

In his 10 alternating good streaks he hit .423.

    Not a streaky hitter?

  96. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 9:36 am

    Morning, fellas,
    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Mister MTU, it’s a quiet day here, to, and it’s Mrs. Tom’s year to do the cooking (getting ready to start now), so I’ll be around today, too. Watching the balloons from New York. Glad the wind went down enough for them to fly.

  97. buy wow gold August 1st, 2014 at 4:44 am
