Happy Thanksgiving!

Popcorn

Barring some sort of surprise negotiation breakthrough, it’s probably going to be a fairly quiet holiday weekend for the Yankees. Of course, by writing that I’m basically guaranteeing that I’ll have to step away from some sort of family function to handle a bit of massive breaking news, but I guess I’ll take my chances.

Just wanted to jump on the blog quickly this morning to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

Go eat something delicious. Hug someone you love. Listen to Alice’s Restaurant at least once all the way through. Just enjoy the day and imagine all of those Brian McCann home runs sailing out to right field next season. I’ll be spending the day with my sister, her husband, her in-laws — they were kind enough to invite me — and my five-month-old nephew. Haven’t seen the kid since just a few days after he was born, so I obviously have a lot to be thankful for.

Enjoy the holiday everyone. Thank you all for making my job awfully fun.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Chanukah to all!!

Great Jeter debate last night lol.. someone get JF’s opinion on Jeter at 3B.

  2. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:03 am

Have a joyous and healthy Holiday Chad.

Thanks for all the hard work.

    Enjoy the respite.

    :)

  3. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:05 am

    Enjoy your Thanksgiving Shame.

If anyone is bored I’ll be round.

Then again that might be even more boring.

    :)

In Cano’s alternating schedule of good and bad he hit .186 in 10 bad streaks.

In his 10 alternating good streaks he hit .423.

    Not a streaky hitter?

“Thank you all for making my job awfully fun.”

Chad, make up your mind. Was it awful or fun?

    Happy Turkey day!

Is it too early for a drink?
Already had some franks in blankets.

    This is great.

I have a turducken cooking and need to leave it to pick up some dessert. Lets hope my whole place doesn’t go up in flames.

Happy Thanksgiving Mike. Being a hospice nurse, Elizabeth is working today, so I’m off to take some snowy pics.

  9. austinmac November 28th, 2013 at 9:27 am

    Chad,

A big thanks to you for making this site so pleasurable for so many. It is obvious you take your job very seriously with much hard work. Rest and eat. Busy days are ahead.

  10. austinmac November 28th, 2013 at 9:29 am

    JCPD,

Many, even if they can’t express it, are undoubtably grateful for your wife. What a tough job. We are lucky to have people like that.

  11. JCPD November 28th, 2013 at 9:31 am

Thanks mac, hope you and everyone else has a safe and happy day!!

  13. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:33 am

    Jim-

Mac is right. Takes a very special person to do that job.

Get some good ones to share.

I’m sorry I don’t live closer or I would tag along.

    Mrs. MTU is in CA.

  14. austinmac November 28th, 2013 at 9:36 am

    MTU,

I will be heading to San Antonio this morning to spend the day and night with my wife’s family. No doubt I will be checking up on you friends. Enjoy your peaceful day.

I am also grateful for good people like you on this board that stays out of any fray and helps us all remember that we are on the same team.

  15. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:40 am

    Mac-

I like San Antonio. Except in Summer.

Have a joyous day. Try not to get too rowdy.

    Thanks for the kind words.

We are, after all is said and done, all we have. So we’d better make the best of it, eh ?

I enjoy what you bring to the table and appreciate your friendship.

    Morning, fellas,
    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Mister MTU, it’s a quiet day here, to, and it’s Mrs. Tom’s year to do the cooking (getting ready to start now), so I’ll be around today, too. Watching the balloons from New York. Glad the wind went down enough for them to fly.

  17. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:42 am

    Bret-

    Have a great Turkey day.

    Or whatever you are having.

    Don’t get too tanked up.

Enjoy the time w your Family.

    :)

Another Happy Thanksgiving one and all…. nice to spend part of the Holiday with the cyber-family!!

Daughters are in NYC and the Dominican Republic so I can’t have too good of a Holiday, but it’ll be okay. According to my watch is 15 minutes til Mimosas.

  19. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 9:44 am

    Good Tom.

You can use a day off.

Me and the Mops should be around too.

Happy Thanksgiving Chad and the LoHud Yankee family.

Birds in the oven, family is playing in the neighborhood Turkey Bowl game and no friends and relatives knocking for a few hours. Just a few of the things I will be giving thanks for today.

This article had a couple of good quotes. Brian McCann’s dad predicting big things for young Brian in NY and a teammate says he’s fat!

@jcrasnick Now that Ricky Nolasco is in the fold, #twins are likely to turn their attention to Phil Hughes, says a baseball source.

Yesterday Chad said he expects Phil to get a 3 year deal.

  51. Shame Spencer November 28th, 2013 at 12:46 pm

Nolasco got 4/$49 btw. Is it crazy I don’t find that unreasonable..?

I wonder what Garza ends up with. I think if I was a big FA pitcher I’d be open to one year, big money deals. They’re more attractive to teams and even if you have a crappy year you’ll still probably make $8 million the next (see: Johnson, Josh).

  52. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 12:52 pm

I met a cop friend down at the market who goes on duty at two and gets off at midnight. To the cops, nurses, doctors, firemen, soldiers, seamen and airmen on duty today, thank you for your service. You are essential (except for the cops on seat belt patrols).

  53. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 12:53 pm

  55. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 1:04 pm

    NYPOST – Ken Davidoff

In the Nov. 5 edition of The Post, I predicted Cano would stay with the Yankees for eight years and $200 million, a figure I swiped from my teammate Joel Sherman (please don’t tell him I did this). It’s believed the Yankees are currently at seven years and $168 million, so they would need to go up just one more year and $1 million more per season to make that work. As Chevy Chase used to say, that’s egg money for the Goliath that is the Yankees. If another team goes significantly over that figure, then the Yankees would have an intellectual right to go forward without the franchise player.

    http://nypost.com/2013/11/28/p.....his-money/

  56. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 1:15 pm

Mrs. Tom’s alma mater, Villanova, is playing Southern Cal at Paradise Island. Tough life for these players. Massimino used to take them to that tournament up in Alaska!

  57. Abe Peterham November 28th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

The thought of Robinson cano running to first at 36-40 years of age makes me ill….

  58. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 1:30 pm

    Bret-

Looks like the Yankees are playing a little bit of hardball w Cano.

They don’t want to bid against themselves.

If they went to 200 right now that might be what they would be doing.

    They’ll probably get there though.

  59. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 1:33 pm

    MTU,

It would be nice if the rest of baseball just backed off. If some team gets crazy with him the Yankees are going to gobble up every last FA. They will go wild turkey.

  60. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Stuffing’s ready to go, turkey’s draining, oven’s hot, onions creamed, cranberry/orange sauce ready to go, green bean casserole ready to go in, blueberry pie cooling, shrimp peeled, veined and boiled (now on ice), potatoes cooked and ready to be mashed. Have I missed anything? Dinner about four hours from now, filled with lovely smells. I love Thanksgiving!

  61. exiledintampa November 28th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

Mr. Tom, sitting here alone I’m so jealous. I don’t cook either. The best to you and Mrs Tom, my friend.

  62. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

    Bret-

I anxiously await the OS unfolding.

McCann was a great start. I hope it continues.

    Tom-

I guess it too late for me to come over.

    :(

  63. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 1:44 pm

    Exiled-

    You aren’t the only one.

I do have the pups though to keep me company.

  64. Hankflorida November 28th, 2013 at 1:45 pm

I find the discussion on Jeter versus Ryan to be an important one if the Yankees pitching is to return to a championship level. As I said before, the Yankees have always preferred to stack their staff with ground ball pitchers then one’s who had rising fast balls, and having a shortstop who can stop the seeing eye grounders goes along way to keeping runs off the score board. Whitey Ford, Vic Raishi, Eddie Lopat and Atley Donald were Yankee pitchers who were thankful to have a slick fielding shortstop like Phil Rizzuto to back them up.

  65. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 1:47 pm

    Happy Thanksgiving Hank.

How about a slick fielding, good-hitting SS ?

I’m sure we all would like that even better.

    ;)

  66. exiledintampa November 28th, 2013 at 1:48 pm

MTU I don’t drink. But if I did, I’d raise one to you too friend. Holidays are the worst when there’s no one to celebrate with. BTW You help me to feel that there’s almost always someone here when you post in the lean moments. thanks for that.

  67. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 1:53 pm

    Exiled and MTU,
Don’t know what you guys are having for dinner, but I learned how to cook at my mother’s knee. I’d have the same menu if I were alone. The smells alone bring memories flooding back, worth the effort, plud the turkey sandwiches and turkey soup still to come. Find a place that’s serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It’ll be good for you souls.

  68. randy l. November 28th, 2013 at 1:53 pm

“McCann was a great start. ”

    mtu-

he’s a had a labrum tear( throws out 20%) and he is getting kind of fat.
he also thinks of himself as the school yard cop on opposing home run trots.
i’ll have to see him once he’s in pinstripes.

but other than that, have a nice thanksgiving :)

  69. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 1:54 pm

    Exiled-

    Glad to be of assistance.

Isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about ?

The only thing I’ll be up to today, besides no good, is a walk down by the River.

After that I should be around on and off.

So, if you feel like chatting just lay it out there and I get back at ya’ at some point.

I’m glad the Blog gives you some comfort.

    :)

  70. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 1:57 pm

    Randy-

    You too.

Don’t overeat or you will have to increase your workload of “pistols”.

Anyway you slice it McCann is a huge O upgrade on what they had.

With his swing he should be depositing balls into the right porch with regularity.

Hal needs to finish what he started to really make it worthwhile.

    :)

  71. exiledintampa November 28th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Randy please don’t rain on the McCann good vibes. He OPS’S about 200 points higher than anything we have. Aren’t you the leading proponent of a good hitting catcher over the Joe Girardi variaty? Happy Thanksgiving Randy. I always enjoy what you have to say.

  72. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

    Tom-

The ladies in my Family growing up generally were very good cooks. I surely miss that.

Unfortunately, Mrs. MTU hates to cook.

I’m content to avoid crowds and enjoy a mellow evening at home with the pups.

We’ll do just fine. It’s about time I didn’t overeat. I’m due for that.

    :)

  73. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 2:03 pm

I’m gonna head out for a while.

Take short walk down by the River.

I’ll catch up to any of you who aren’t stuffing their faces when I get back.

    ;)

  74. randy l. November 28th, 2013 at 2:06 pm

“With his swing he should be depositing balls into the right porch with regularity.”

    mtu-

i actually liked seeing him in a video hit an opposite field home run.

i think with the likelihood that shifts are going to be ever increasing that hitters who can use the whole field will be more valuable.

  75. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 2:08 pm

    Randy-

He should be able to go the other way.

    He’s a good hitter.

Girardi might not be totally thrilled but you should be.

    Later.

    :)

  76. randy l. November 28th, 2013 at 2:09 pm

    Happy Thanksgiving Hank.

How about a slick fielding, good-hitting SS ?

I’m sure we all would like that even better.

A happy and healthy Thanksgiving to you. A slick fielding good hitting SS are few and far between just like a slick fielding good hitting power 2nd basemen like Cano are hard to find. Jeter is a great player but he could never cover the territory that Rizzuto could. The Scooter was always the best friend that the Yankee pitchers could have in the infield.

  78. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 2:35 pm

  81. sammiejohnson November 28th, 2013 at 2:42 pm

I am not exactly alone this Thanksgiving, just for the day. For the first time in years, my wife caught an early Holiday shift and will not be home until early evening. She has enough seniority that she can normally avoid such things. Not this year.

We normally spit the cooking. I do the the Turkey, Stuffing, and Gravy and she does the Potatoes and all those little side dishes she likes so well. This year, by default, I am flying solo. And on that note, I want to express my admiration for all the ladies out there who have ever made “Deviled Eggs”. (And didn’t swear once doing so.) I normally just wolf these things down at the table and don’t think twice about it. Man, what a pain to make.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Now off to get the bird in the oven.

Nobody is old as me! Rizzuto is considered one of the great fielding shortstops and his stats are there for all to see especially on the amount of double plays that he was involved in. Do you remember the Cardinal’s shortstop Marion who was called “The Octopus.” They both were outstanding defensive guys.

Smoking beats frying every time, but it’s cold outside, and I’m sitting in the kitchen breathing in the nectar of the gods as the turkey roasts. Rest of the stuff going in soon.

  95. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 3:54 pm

    Hank,
Is it Marty Marion you’re talking about, Cardinals, replaced by Schoendienst? If so, never saw him live.

  96. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 4:19 pm

Green beans in, mashed taters boiling, turkey smelling great. Let’s get ready to rumble!

  97. comet November 28th, 2013 at 4:21 pm

Happy thanksgiving to all my American friends out in LoHud Land. Hope you have a wonderful day!

  98. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 4:23 pm

    Thanks Comet.

Enjoy your wonderful sounding meal Tom.

    blake,

Smokin a little more technique sensitive though than just dunkin it in oil…..this one came out perfect

    comet,
It’s a special day, both here and in Canada, just different days. Happy unThanksgiving day to you. Glad to see you!

  101. comet November 28th, 2013 at 4:26 pm

You are welcome MTU. Your good humour makes the blog a great place to be.

  102. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 4:31 pm

    The Mops did well today.

They got sliced chicken w gravy, and mashed potatoes and peas.

Needless to say the they licked their plates clean.

I need to train them to cook for ME.

    :)

I just wish people would not make up new melodies for the Star Spangled Banner. Give me a military band every time, at 128 per minute, the way it was written,

  104. comet November 28th, 2013 at 4:33 pm

You guys are making hungry. My left to visit her grandchildren today. I just might go looking for a turkey dinner and some pumpkin pie! Enjoy your dinners everyone.

  105. comet November 28th, 2013 at 4:35 pm

Good to see you Tom. Hope you have a great meal tonight.

  106. luis November 28th, 2013 at 4:46 pm

    Good evening everyone,

Happy thanksgiving and Hanuka… I didn’t know that both events where so close to each other.

    MTU,

Sorry but today was hectic in the office.

  107. wanzies222 November 28th, 2013 at 4:46 pm

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Appreciate all the opportunities we have, each and every day.

  108. luis November 28th, 2013 at 4:49 pm

    MTU,

By the way… My dog’s nickname is. “Trash compactor”… He eats anything within his reach, except lettuce and yogurt… Anything else is fair game to him ;)

  109. luis November 28th, 2013 at 4:51 pm

    Hey Steve,

Happy thanksgiving to you…. Good post about Cano yesterday

  110. wanzies222 November 28th, 2013 at 4:55 pm

    Hi Luis,

Thanks, and don’t work too hard. Work is a good thing, just take a few moments to appreciate those you enjoy in your life.

  111. comet November 28th, 2013 at 4:57 pm

Hey Luis! good to see you here. Are you keeping out of trouble down there?

  112. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 4:57 pm

Turkey’s out and resting, mashed being mashed, gravy on the stove, sauce on the table, beans out in a minute or so, rolls in the oven, what’s wrong with this picture?

  113. Ys Guy November 28th, 2013 at 4:59 pm

    HT everybody!

  114. luis November 28th, 2013 at 5:00 pm

    Steve,

I always try to keep a balance in life… But lately, I have had a lot of work… Remember that for me is just another day… But since I lived in the US for many years, I do understand how important this holiday is. I hope you have a blast tonight along with your loved ones. Save some gravy and mash potatoes for me please ;)

  115. wanzies222 November 28th, 2013 at 5:02 pm

    luis -

Will do… always plenty of leftovers around here…that’s the best part of the weekend…

  116. luis November 28th, 2013 at 5:03 pm

    Hey Comet!

As much as I can ;) it really hasn’t happened anything yet… But it will… My best guess is the second week of January, right after the Christmass holidays… But it could happen right after the election of Dec 8th, but I doubt it

  117. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 5:30 pm

    Evening guys.

    Better late than never Luis.

    Have a great Holiday Steve.

Come back rested and refreshed so you can fill us full of more dreams.

    :)

  118. wanzies222 November 28th, 2013 at 5:35 pm

Best to you and Ol’ One Eye….

    Same dreams, just better data….lol.

  119. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 5:37 pm

    Steve-

    Thanks.

I was thinking your handle should be “WanziesTwozies”.

  121. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 5:40 pm

I was thing of GB and “Killer” today.

Killer never got to celebrate Thanksgiving dinner.

He was usually smashed well before then.

He was an interesting pooch. He was sort of a canine gigolo.

His moral standards definitely needed adjustment.

I know GB tried to work w him. Just wouldn’t take.

  128. JCPD November 28th, 2013 at 6:00 pm

  129. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:00 pm

    Al-

Yes. Lucky is home. He actually did well enough to come home the first day.

His eye looks like one of those shrunken heads.

He’s doing better every day. No complications so far.

    :)

  130. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 6:03 pm

When we lived in more populous parts, any traveler was welcome for Thanksgiving. We hosted Egyptians, Chinese, Japanese, many Europeans, and none could imagine the bounty of an American Thanksgiving dinner.

  131. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:06 pm

    Tom-

When Old Russians left the Motherland to come here they were flabbergasted at what they had been missing.

One walk thru a supermarket or a Walmart type store was enough to confuse the living hell out of ‘em.

That’s what happens when you have more than 0,1, or 2 choices your whole life.

    :)

  132. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 6:07 pm

Mrs. Tom and I just can’t adjust to small Thanksgivings. We tried to trim it down to just the two of us, but we have enough left over to feed a couple of squads. It was wonderful!

  133. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:07 pm

    edit: no more than. Sorry.

  134. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:10 pm

  137. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 6:18 pm

    MTU,
Thinking of your pups eating mashed potatoes and peas, once had a German shepherd who loved left-over stew. She’d eat the potatoes, leftover meat, carrots, whatever leftovers were in there, polish the bowl, and leave every pea untouched..

Watching this half-time show from Dallas, America has already gone down the tubes, if that’s thought of as talent.

  138. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:20 pm

Except for the cheerleaders that is.

  140. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:27 pm

From my perusing the latest baseball news it looks like just about everybody wants a piece of Beltran.

If the Yankees want him it seems fairly certain they are going to have to find a way to get him his 3 yrs.

    ;)

  141. MTU November 28th, 2013 at 6:28 pm

    Catch you later.

    I’m out for now.

  142. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 6:39 pm

    Mister mick,
    You’re right. I’m out, too.

  143. Yes You McCann November 28th, 2013 at 6:41 pm

The Yankees should always be flexing their financial advantage over the rest of MLB. Now, even moreso. We just squandered our 1st rd pick with the excellent signing of McCann. It’s time to sign as many players as possible, luxury tax be damned. The best way to make money and increase value of the organization is to construct a winning team, not resetting the luxury tax.

  144. ericns1 November 28th, 2013 at 6:45 pm

Happy Thanksgiving – this is a wonderful blog

  145. Yes You McCann November 28th, 2013 at 6:47 pm

It’s actually the alcohol and calories consumed that causes sleepiness on Thanksgiving.

  146. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 6:52 pm

Also the effort it takes to make it happen, and the joy we take in it. Realists have no place here.

  147. mick November 28th, 2013 at 7:03 pm

Hope we all had a peaceful, quiet day…

  148. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I remembered the magic word, “Yes dear”. So yes it was.

  149. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

All cleaned up and put away, chased a possum off the back porch where the carcass is going tonight, latched the door to make sure he doesn’t come back, so all is well. Good night, all.

  150. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Last question: why is “offsides” now called “neutral zone encroachment”? Jeez.

  151. AAA November 28th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Last question: why is “offsides” now called “neutral zone encroachment”? Jeez.

    ========================

    Different things.

Offsides = crossing line of scrimmage before snap
Encroachment = contact w/ offensive player before snap (basically offsides w/ contact
Neutral zone infraction = movement offsides that cause false start by an offensive player.

  152. Yes You McCann November 28th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

    Correct on all 3 descriptions.

  153. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

All used to be described as “offsides”, with the same penalty, so why the fancy language? Just screwing up the language.

  154. comet November 28th, 2013 at 8:04 pm

    Anyone still around?

  155. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

    Hey, comet,
But I’m out of here in a minute.

  156. Jerkface November 28th, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Encroachment has been a penalty for at the very least 2 decades

  157. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 8:10 pm

    jerkface,
I’ve been around a lot longer than that. Offsides is offsides. Who cares?

  158. Yes You McCann November 28th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

The difference is encroachment results in a dead ball. Like Offsides, unabated to the QB. Player safety.

  159. tomingeorgia November 28th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

    OK, OK,
Let’s just make it touch football.

  160. comet November 28th, 2013 at 8:20 pm

    happy Thanksgiving JF!

  161. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 9:06 pm

Turkey contains a high amount of the amino acid tryptophan which is the building block of the protein/neurotransmitter seretonin. Serotonin regulates the sleep/wake cycle. During sunlight/daylight tryptophan converts to serotonin. In the absence of daylight at night, serotonin converts to melatonin, a protein/hormone that induces a restful state.

So turkey’s biological components have a ton to do with sleepiness. Alcohol probably makes an impact as well since it depletes B vitamins which are essential to energy metabolism and production of new serotonin. A cellular environment deficient in B vitamins likely shuts down serotonin synthesis and speeds up conversion of serotonin to melatonin.

  162. rl15 November 28th, 2013 at 9:17 pm

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I’d like to thank you all for making baseball fun. And interesting.

  165. Shame Spencer November 28th, 2013 at 11:11 pm

My uncles are Mets fans (I know, I know) and they were talking Hughes. Apparently the Twins, Royals and Mets are all in on him. Multi-year contract is a given at this point.

The pitching market is, once again, insane.

  166. chicken_stanley November 28th, 2013 at 11:21 pm

    Hi Shame.

I’m not sure the “surprised” emotion even exists for me anymore when it comes to contract terms :)

    I wish Hughes the best

  167. yankeefeminista November 28th, 2013 at 11:30 pm

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone had a wonderful day!

Shame, I read that the Mets are likely no longer in on Hughes b/c they only wanted to go one year, and Hughes can get two years elsewhere. Think they said Angels, Twins, Mariners, KC is still in.

  168. chicken_stanley November 28th, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Hi YF. I hadn’t heard that the Mariners were possible suitors… His game might play there as well as anywhere

  169. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Jacoby Ellsbury has hit .301/.361/.414 in 38 career playoff games including .325/.386/.450 in World Series competition for a .836 OPS from CF.

Jacoby Ellsbury hits good pitching because he’s a highly skilled hitter.

He’s a must have in my book.

  170. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:37 pm

His career 162 game SB average is 55, making him the most lethal leadoff hitter in baseball.

  171. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:39 pm

His highest SB total is 70. SEVENTY stolen bases.

  172. chicken_stanley November 28th, 2013 at 11:40 pm

I like Ellsbury’s skill set… his injury history still worries me, though.

Question – The Yanks sign Ellsbury… How does the outfield lineup look? Shift Gardner to right? To left? DH Sori? Play Ellsbury in right? Try to package Gardner in a trade? Whats your take?

  173. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:40 pm

In 2013 he stole 52 bases to lead the league and was caught only 4 times – ONLY 4 TIMES.

  174. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:42 pm

When ahead in the count he hits .353 for his career.

  175. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:44 pm

With runners on, he hits .314 for his career with an .819 OPS from CF.

  176. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:45 pm

With 2 outs and RISP he hits .306 for his career with an .845 OPS from CF.

  177. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:49 pm

What’s my take on Gardner? Get what you can. Don’t clog DH with Soriano when you have Jeter needing so many AB’s there.

  178. yankeefeminista November 28th, 2013 at 11:50 pm

Hi Chicken! Did you arrive home yet? I think Hughes will do fine in some of these more flyball pitcher friendly parks. Rumor was he might get two years, @$15MM.

I think Ellsbury is risky and would require more years than we would want to commit. I still think we sign Beltran and for more years that I would like. Bet we give him that 3rd year…

  179. chicken_stanley November 28th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

I thought earlier you were on the Choo-Choo train… what made you change your mind?

  180. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

In summary, Ellsbury is a huge threat to score and a clutch hitter in desperate situations and during playoff competition versus top notch pitching.

He makes a lineup more cyclical from both ends, scoring runs and putting himself in position to score runs and also making frequent contact with the ball when you need him most against tough pitchers.

    The guy is a winner.

The Yankees should go all-out to swipe him from Boston and ignite the Jackie Bradley era prematurely.

  181. chicken_stanley November 28th, 2013 at 11:56 pm

YF – yes ma’am, this morning (thanks for asking). Hope you had a great day!

I’d almost bet on the 3rd year. No data to back that statement up, just a gut feel.

  182. Bret The Hitman November 28th, 2013 at 11:57 pm

    chicken_stanley November 28th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

I thought earlier you were on the Choo-Choo train… what made you change your mind?

    ______________

First off I considered McCann to be the candidate for worst overpay but I understand the thinking of having him to strengthen up the middle. If the Yankees are going to go that route and splurge, then Ellsbury is the next logical step. Ellsbury will also be an overpay. But when I think about it, all free agents are overpays but since they all will be overpaid, that sets the baseline and that’s the market so you really can’t complain. If you don’t overcommit to these guys, you don’t get them. If the Yankees are willing to go all-out, I support that and can toss out the overly cautious approach of the past.

  183. chicken_stanley November 29th, 2013 at 12:04 am

Bret – fair enough points… I’m still on the Choo train but signing Ellsbury or Beltran also makes the Yankees better. I guess the question is which spend positions the Yankees for the most short and long term success (and there’s no shortage of opinions on here about that :) )

  184. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:04 am

My hope now is Cano shows some loyalty to the home team instead of waiting for the Yankees to show more of their offseason hand. It hurts the club to not push forward and compete for players with other orgs. I would say screw it. Pony up for Ellsbury and stop pretending. I guess the timing is not right yet.

  185. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:06 am

And I believe reports the Yankees have 3-4 offers out there. Serious interest is being shown to these free agents. The Yankees are market makers and they really should be. So I’m happy. Cano has to stop hotdogging it and milking the clock. It’s ridiculous. CC didn’t do this. He signed within the window.

  186. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:09 am

Also Ellsbury was a football star in high school, so this notion of him being “soft” or “fragile” I think is opportunistic and overblown.

  187. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:10 am

You have to be tough to compete in football on the high school level. Ellsbury also starred in basketball. He was a 3 sport athlete. He is a 5 tool player potentially in YS.

  188. chicken_stanley November 29th, 2013 at 12:10 am

I think I’m down for the count. I’ll catch you guys tomorrow night… um, looking at the clock, I’ll catch you guys today-night :)

  189. Pat M. November 29th, 2013 at 12:11 am

Bret The Hitman. You don’t have to sell Jacoby Ellsbury to me at all.. I’ve been waiting a few years for this offseason and I do hope he ends up in NY. As I mentioned before his injuries are hustle injuries . The other day we were talking about The LA Dodgers and their new YV package. 8 BILLION Dollars for 25 years. That alone covers their payroll and beyond. Basically they can play to an empty Dodger Stadium and still make a profit

  190. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:13 am

    Pat M.,

And the Red Sox can start Jackie Bradley, pocket 140 M and still fill Fenway. They’re fresh off a crowd pleasure and so they’re playing with house money now. The Yankees attendance is trending down and ratings dipped so they have to do more to sway the fan base.

    It’s the perfect storm.

    Get this guy in pinstripes.

He’s a more focused, channeled, more competitive version of Johnny Damon – and a far superior fielder.

  191. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:14 am

    edit: crowd pleaser

  192. yankeefeminista November 29th, 2013 at 12:14 am

chicken, glad to hear it. It’s always nice to get home. Yes, I had a very nice day. Thanks for the good wishes. Looks like there was spirited communing here among the Lohudders during the day.

Ellsbury’s going to get 7 years, and we have more pressing needs. I doubt we are even considering such a contract. Hopefully, we get Robi signed sooner than later.

I’m off to sleep as well. Have a good night!

  193. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:18 am

And this fixation is hard for me but I’m letting go. I hated Johnny Damon so much as a Red Sox that I disliked him as a Yankee. And now that he’s not a Yankee, I hate him again.

  194. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:25 am

Boras owns the lot with Beltran, Choo and Ellsbury. They’re all overpriced merchandise pushed by the same stubborn salesman at the same dealership. You’re not going to walk away with a good deal on one yet not the others. All are different versions of bad deals.

  195. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:29 am

As a preemptive strike against Gardner’s fan base, here are Gardner’s stats against tough pitching in the playoffs.

In 33 career games he is .215/.257/.231 for a .488 OPS

In world series competition, he is batting .000.

You don’t dare commit to this guy because he disappears against good, tough playoff caliber pitching. It’s a cheaper investment because it’s a worse investment. It’s a bad investment.

  196. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:31 am

And this “playoffs are a crapshoot” argument is lazy. If you don’t have good hitters stacked up against playoff pitchers, you don’t get results, you don’t win playoff games or advance deep. Gardner does not struggle against playoff pitchers due to a game of sheer luck like you find on the craps table. He lacks the skill to improve your odds.

  197. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:36 am

And it’s laughable if anyone imagines the Yankees don’t take playoff stats into account despite small samples. Look where that got intercontinental champion regular season belt holder wannabe WWE sensation, Nick Swisher.

  198. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:37 am

    And Russell Martin.

  199. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:37 am

    His tag team partner.

  200. Pat M. November 29th, 2013 at 12:39 am

    Brett Gardner……4th outfielder

  201. Bret The Hitman November 29th, 2013 at 12:43 am

Gardner is a defensive specialist. That’s fine, but the Yankees can do better than that. There are 5 tools sitting there and the money to acquire them.

  202. Pat M. November 29th, 2013 at 1:40 am

I suggest for anyone who is preparing to engage into some form of debate with Bret The Hitman, reagrding the merits of Ellsbury and then if so desired , Garnder, I strongly urge them to read about 15 minutes of posting prior to this offering. You might want to change teams

  203. Pat M. November 29th, 2013 at 1:48 am

Goodnight all and good morning to Doreen and her breakfast club. I’m cruising up the coast of California via Pacific Coast Hi-way. Santa Barbara Friday night, Monteray / Carmel Saturday night and then either proceed north or just start the return back home to Newport Beach. Whiffle ball Home Run tourney in Santa Barbara tomorrow afternoon. I’m in !!!!! Hope all had a great Thanksgiving and for the few friends that stay away ( SJ, CB , Nick in SF, M, Erin , Erica, Betsy and so and so . Hope you also had a fine day of appreciation. Comeback, mick will offer protection for the dark side

  204. Pat M. November 29th, 2013 at 2:03 am

Check that…….From the dark side mick will offer protection. No Bogeyman while under Mick’s watch

  205. blake November 29th, 2013 at 7:17 am

“Hustle injures” are still injuries and they tend to keep happening…..lots of guys hustle and don’t get hurt . It’s genetics….some guys just get hurt more IMO and I’m afraid Jacoby is one of those guys.

He’s like a thoroughbred ….when he’s 100% right he’s very good….when he’s not he’s not the same guy and not really even close. Unfortunately he’s not been the player he can be very much in his career…..I don’t expect that to change at age 30.

As I’ve said I love the skillset he has….he just scares me on a long term deal……I won’t shed years if try sign him because he’d make them better….potentially much better if he could stay healthy…..but I think Choo is a safer bet if you’re spending that much money

  206. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 7:44 am

Good morning to all you Tryptophan addicts.

I hope you got your fixes last night.

I think the Yankees want Beltran. Lot’s of competition for him.

    They might even want a 2nd OF’er.

Hal should finish what he started w McCann.

Kuroda and Tanaka are must haves.

Does Cano go for 200 ?

  207. blake November 29th, 2013 at 7:58 am

    MTU,
McCann lost their pick …they need to be all in

  208. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:01 am

    Blake-

But will they be ? Or will they still be doing the 189 dance ?

    ;)

  209. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:05 am

I wonder if Hal’s Thanksgiving of caviar, truffles, and foie gras will loosen up the purse strings ?

Especially after he washed it down w some Dom Perignon.

    ;)

  210. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:13 am

    Monday is the non-tender deadline.

    That could be interesting.

  211. austinmac November 29th, 2013 at 8:16 am

I don’t know if any NY writer has said the McCann signing signals an end to $189. We are all hoping, and logic tells us he must to field a competitive team. I am still not convinced. But, still hoping.

  212. austinmac November 29th, 2013 at 8:18 am

With teams having more money, I would think there would be fewer non-tenders. Acquiring them for the Yankees would remind me off last year’s team building.

  213. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:19 am

    Mac-

Hope your Turkey day was a winner.

    Most of us are.

    ;)

  214. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:25 am

I’m surprised Peralta did so well.

One would have thought he was damaged goods and that would suppress his price.

The Cards sure didn’t feel that way.

They paid him handsomely. I guess w Kozma out there they had little choice but to try and upgrade.

  215. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:27 am

FA prices are very inflated right now.

Will be glad to see Hughes getting a second chance.

For his own good I hope the Halos suck him up. Or maybe the Pads.

It’s close to home for him.

    ;)

  216. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:29 am

How bout a little help carrying the ball in here this morning ?

Grab some more Java and get with it.

We’ve got a Team to build.

    :)

  217. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 8:46 am

    And here it is :

    Jeter/Ellsbury
    Beltran/Choo
    Cano
    Kemp
    Tex/Grandy
    McCann
    Soriano
    Infante
    GGBG

    CC
    Kuroda
    Nova
    Tanaka
    Pineda/Phelps/Nuno

    Warren

    Nathan
    D-Rob
    Kelly
    O’Flaherty
    Cabral
    Warren
    Betances

Make up whatever bench you want.

    Get rid of Wells.

Trade for Gregorius, Owings, Davidson, Olt, or Castro

Done. Another ring on the way.

    :)

  218. austinmac November 29th, 2013 at 8:55 am

    MTU,

Yes, I has a fun and stomache filled Fhanksgiving. Good day for a nice long walk.

As a charter member of Team Greedy, I approve of your team. While spending, I would add an experienced LOOGY to the pen.

I hopeyou and your pooches have a good day. It is finally warmer here so walk it is in a while.

  219. MTU November 29th, 2013 at 9:00 am

    Mac-

    That is O’Flaherty.

    Have a good walk.

    I’ll be doing the same.

    :)
