• After the Brendan Ryan re-signing became official today, I emailed Brian Cashman to find out if the team ever completed its late-season Ryan trade by sending either a player or cash to the Mariners. “Not yet,” he said. So, that’s coming at some point.

• Speaking of Ryan, Joel Sherman reports that his deal pays $4 million in the first two years — not $5 million as previously reported — and because of the mutual option, the luxury tax charge for this season is $1.67 million.

• Still no agreement in place for the Japanese posting system, but the L.A. Times reports that the current negotiations include a proposed cap on the amount a team can bid. That would seem to be bad news for the Yankees if that idea is accepted.

• The Tigers have made another big trade, sending Doug Fister to the Nationals for a set of three players, two young pitchers and utility man Steve Lombardozzi. Have to assume he’ll play various positions now that the Tigers have Ian Kinsler to play second base every day.

• Risky pitching continues to generate big money this winter. Today it was Scott Kazmir who signed a two-year, $22-million deal with the A’s.
