Here’s a potential role player for next season.
According to Matt Eddy, the Baseball America transactions guru, the Yankees have signed corner infielder/outfielder Russ Canzler to a minor league deal. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Canzler actually spent about a month on the Yankees 40-man roster last winter. He was claimed off waivers in early January, but ultimately designated for assignment just a few weeks before spring training (he came off the roster when Travis Hafner was added).
Canzler doesn’t have much big league time, but he’s had significant success against lefties in Triple-A. He’s primarily a first baseman and left fielder, but he’s spent some time at third base and in right field. Not a huge addition, but the kind that could work his way into the picture at some point.
