The Brian McCann press conference is about to start. Jean Afterman, Brian Cashman, Randy Levine, Hal Steinbrenner, Lonn Trost, Joe Girardi, McCann and his wife, Ashley, are all in attendance along with other members of the McCann family. The Yankees have announced that only McCann himself will speak during the actual press conference. Cashman, Girardi and Steinbrenner will speak afterward, and you can bet they’ll be asked questions that have little to do with McCann himself.
I’ll try to update this post while McCann is speaking, but I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for writing. Might be chasing down interviews pretty quickly. The press conference is being televised on YES Network, so tune in if you can.
UPDATE, 2:08 p.m.: Here we go. The participants are in place and media relations director Jason Zillo is doing the introduction, putting McCann next in line among the great Yankees catchers.
UPDATE, 2:17 p.m.: Brian Cashman offers some gifts to McCann’s wife. He will wear No. 34. Says he called Mark Teixeira to talk about the idea of coming to New York.
UPDATE, 2:22 p.m.: Asked about the value of signing with a team that has a DH, McCann said he prioritized signing with a team that had a chance to win. Said he came to visit New York and left feeling good about the city and the opportunity. Said he hasn’t had a chance yet to familiarize himself with the pitching staff.
UPDATE, 2:25 p.m.: McCann says he’s excited to play with Ellsbury. Better make that deal official soon!
UPDATE, 2:26 p.m.: And that concludes the early portion of the press conference. Off to the breakout interviews now.
