Past and present Yankees react to Torre’s Hall of Fame election

Joe Torre

Quotes passed along by the Yankees…

“On behalf of the Steinbrenner family and our entire organization, I’d like to congratulate Joe Torre on his induction today into the Hall of Fame. Joe led our team during one of the most successful runs in our storied history, and he did it with a quiet dignity that was true to the Yankee way. Joe’s place in Yankees history has been secure for quite some time and it is appropriate that he now gets to take his place among the greats in Cooperstown.”
Hal Steinbrenner, Yankees Managing General Partner

“Joe was a tremendous manager, and this is such a richly deserved honor. I was incredibly fortunate to have played and coached for Joe, and I learned so many nuances into managing from him. The first thing I think of is how much of an importance he placed on developing and cultivating relationships. Not only with players, but with everyone he came in contact with. It’s something that was the bedrock for his success.”
Joe Girardi, Yankees Manager (played under Torre from 1996-99 and was a bench coach and catching instructor for Torre in 2005)

“Mr. Torre is like a second father to me. I learned so much from him, but what sticks with me the most is the way he treated everyone with respect and fairness. In my opinion, it was his greatest attribute. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”
Derek Jeter, Yankees captain and shortstop (played during Torre’s entire Yankees tenure from 1996-2007)

“I could not be more proud. What made him special was that he was always there to support his players, to offer encouragement. And if he saw something he didn’t like, he’d be the first to pull you aside and let you know, but he did it with class. Joe let us enjoy the game. When you have a manager like that, you play with love and good things happen. As a player, that’s all you can ever ask for.”
Mariano Rivera, former Yankees pitcher (played during Torre’s entire Yankees tenure from 1996-2007)

“I’m so excited for Joe. In many ways, he was the pulse of all those championship teams. The one thing about Joe is that he never panicked, and that type of calm demeanor allowed us to go out and do the things we were capable of doing. He was a great teacher and father figure to all of us.”
Andy Pettitte, former Yankees pitcher (played under Torre from 1996-2003 and in 2007)

“I’m so happy for Joe and his family. He was our leader and he was also our security blanket. When I played for Joe, I felt like he was my dad. We played the game with respect and honor, and we took those qualities from him. He’s one of the immortals now.”
Jorge Posada, former Yankees catcher (played during Torre’s entire Yankees tenure from 1996-2007)

Okay, back in for a few minutes…. some updates….

Kemp’s medicals are out, so I can say what I couldn’t say before….he’s not in very good shape, so probably not going to get traded now. Best bet for LAD is to wait and get him on the field. He’s still in a boot.

Lots of discussions similar to this afternoon. Something should happen soon, even as soon as tonight.

Favorite for Price – Seattle, only because of the cra-cra leadership. Arizona is the wildcard. Nothing will happen with Owings, etc. until they know they are out on big fish (Price & Sale).

    More later.

    Any more on GGBG ?

    Patrick,

I left a post in the previous thread… I still haven’t figure out how to copy and paste with a Google Chrome yet…Sorry

    MTU,

Yes, I could… But what would we talk about? ;)

    Steve,

Please keep the updates coming…Good stuff

    MTU -

Basically bidding at this point…several options for the FO, not all the same type player, so there are flowchart type questions…if 2B, then which SP? If RP, then which 2B? That kinda thing.

    Bidding indicates interest.

    That is good.

@Joelsherman1: #sfgiants intrigued by Brett Gardner. But 1 involved person says of a trade, “not likely, but not impossible.”

  8. blake December 9th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

    What?

Very big difference but Jeter is the same guy when ppl asked him yrs ago about moving off SS and he looked at them as if they were aliens from another planet.

The team is bigger than any individual. Jeter’s pride means very little next to the success of the team. In other words I don’t give a crap what position he wants to play.

    —-

We all agree but his pride is going to get in the way.

    —–

I’m not going to call Jeter selfish but I do think it has hurt the team the way they’ve let Jeter dictate where he plays.

He should have moved from SS long before his ankle injury. But now it’s almost criminal that they’ve let him stay there.

There is no shame having to move to another position. Cal Ripken had to do it. Mantle did it. So did Ernie Banks.

There’s a reason why there haven’t been many 40 yr old shortstops in MLB history.

  10. luis December 9th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

    No problem MTU ;)

Maybe I am… Just the way I see it… You know I am not a big fan of this FO…

  15. MTU December 9th, 2013 at 7:15 pm

    Luis-

They are not going to stop until they have what they need.

    They need another mid-rotation starter

    A LOOGY

And someone who can either play 2b or 3b.

I think that is the bare minimum.

When you see the finished product I think you will be pleased.

Look at how much work has been done already.

    ;)

    @ GF very well said.

  17. wanzies222 December 9th, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Angels have been damn near impossible to deal with for several years. Partly why they cannot improve their team. Skaggs is a nice piece for a one-trick pony like Trumbo.

Choo vs Cruz talks have been going on all day. Typical Boras stuff. Seattle really wants both. We’ll see.

To add to your point who can ever forget Yogi going to the outfield to allow Elston Howard to get behind the plate and into the lineup.

Classy move by the Yankees to honor Nelson Mandela and what he stood for with a plaque. Just Classy.

Indeed…I was making the very same argument the other day with mick. This is not a playoff team right now because they have too many holes. In fact, even with their new toys, this team is worse than they were in Sept.

    Shockingly, he disagreed.

Everything they’ve done thus far is window dressing if they don’t stay aggressive and address their other holes too.
    ==============
    GF

From your use of the word “shockingly” I sense a degree of sarcasm which is fine but if you take a positive outlook you might agree that you are worrying wrongly that they will not pursue the path they are already on to improve this team by slashing thru the 189 mark.

Their hitting has improved 100% even with the loss of Cano and they look so, so much better than last year’s hurt version of a team, with definitely more to come.

The pitching is questionable as CC and Kuroda looked shot and Nova is always up and down and we don’t know who the 4th starter is yet.

That might be the ultimate question mark as we know that pitching is the key to the Kingdom.

    Sorry.

    That’s a relief.

The guy is still a tub of lard.

  89. mick December 9th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

    Luis

Sorry about my outburst last night but sometimes I can’t take the negativity especially after all the good things the Yanks have been doing.
It just seemed counterproductive to the occasional good vibe we were getting here with the Yankee moves and willingness to blast thru 189 and be the Yanks again.
I understand your objectivity but we will have plenty of time to analyze this team after the OS is over and during the season.

Since he can hit a little, isn’t it plausible to think he wins the job out there? Didi’s a weak stick.

    Irrelevant. He’s effective.

  97. CountryClub December 9th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

If Jeter is healthy and hitting, the Yanks are best off with him playing short. D is overrated if he’s hitting like Jeter.

If he’s not hitting, well then that’s a different story.

No, I’m referring to the notion that pitching is the key to the kingdom.

You need good pitching for sure, but this team has won 27 championships with offense as their #1 priority.

    What happened in the 80′s?

  110. Yankee Trader December 9th, 2013 at 8:07 pm

Towers did say that he felt we rushed Gregorius and that he probably tired at the end, after a good start.

Is there any market for Ichiro developing?

  114. MTU December 9th, 2013 at 8:11 pm

I said you at least need good pitching. Their pitching downright stunk in the 80s.

27 championships with offense as their top priority.

  117. mick December 9th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

If Infante is looking for a 4 year deal he might be out of the picture.
Don’t think they want Gardner enough to give Bailey or Phillips.
Might just have to go with Johnson, give Brian Roberts a minor lg contract and ST invite.
Roll the dice with Reynolds or Nunez at 3rd till the Arod thing settles.
Also looks like Choo is gone, so might be smart to keep Gardy, we know how Joe feels about D.
Get Tanaka, if it keeps us near the 189, we can get HanRam next year.

  118. wanzies222 December 9th, 2013 at 8:13 pm

    joeman -

If they can trade both Gardner and Ichiro they will. Either way, Wells gets DFA’d. Almonte moves up the food chain at that point.

  119. blake December 9th, 2013 at 8:14 pm

Sounds like Choo could be coming off the board soon

  120. MTU December 9th, 2013 at 8:14 pm

Soriano, Ellsbury, Beltran w Ichiro as a BU.

    Scary.

    Think “Space Cowboys”.

    Can’t do that.

If GGBG goes they must find a credible replacement.

    That means someone fairly young.

    Not ready for Medicare.

Whomever that 4th outfielder is he’s going to play regularly.

You may not like Gardner but he’d produce far more value than Ichiro would.

So unless trading Gardner helps them fill a gaping hole (SP, 2B, 3B) it doesn’t make a ton of sense to trade him.

You get what you can get. If you can’t then you can’t.
Infante will not be lowballed, it appears.
    Phillips would cost too much.

Unless, of course, they get Choo…
