Another reliever off the board: Balfour appears headed for Baltimore

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 17, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

From Ken Rosenthal: The Orioles are close to wrapping up a two-year deal with Grant Balfour, who I assume will replace Jim Johnson at closer. Susan Slusser reports from Oakland that Balfour had a bigger offer on the table but preferred the Orioles. Baltimore has been rumored to be in on Balfour for quite a while.

With Balfour off the table, the top late-inning relievers on the free agent market seem to be Joaquin Benoit and Fernando Rodney, each of whom could be a strong setup man or ninth-inning alternative. Jesse Crain is also still out there, an intriguing — and relatively young — setup man, who’s been awfully good the past four years, but who also hurt his shoulder this season. There’s some risk involved with any shoulder issue, but Crain might be a less costly alternative to Benoit and Rodney.

Even with Matt Thornton on board to replace Boone Logan, the Yankees still have a need for a late-inning reliever. Guys like Andrew Bailey, Chris Perez and Jose Veras are also out there and could be options at the right price.

If they don’t sign Tanaka that is the obituary for the Evil Empire.

    Oh please…..
That is a bit of a stretch!

I didn’t say they would never win again or even not win this year, but the “Evil Empire” moniker would definitely not be applicable.

  4. ac1 December 17th, 2013 at 2:25 pm

Ok you are correct about the slogan itself.
Thought you meant the Yankees who spend.

  5. Shame Spencer December 17th, 2013 at 2:30 pm

Maybe we should be asking about Tanaka’s injury history.. anyone have any info?

  6. Patrick December 17th, 2013 at 2:34 pm

@Joelsherman1: #Yankees have expressed interest in fr agt Jeff Baker as RH bat that can help at 2b/3b

I think the Yankees will get Baker or Reynolds and call it a day on the infield. Tex at 1st, Jeter at SS with Ryan backing him up then some combination of Nunez, Johnson, Roberts and Baker/Reynolds at 2B and 3B. Eh.. Not that great but I’m ok with it if they use the money they save on 2B/3B to sign Tanaka.

  7. Jerkface December 17th, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Maybe we should be asking about Tanaka’s injury history.. anyone have any info?

He has had some shoulder fatigue, though no major injuries in his career.

  8. bbb51 December 17th, 2013 at 2:37 pm

    The Yankees are spending.

However, if I’m the owner of the Evil Empire Yankees, I give Cano the 10/235 or up to 10/250 and I get Tanaka or take Lee’s contract.

  9. Patrick December 17th, 2013 at 2:38 pm

A young Dan Haren would probably get the same contract Tanaka will get.

That’s all I’m saying. It’s not great value, it’s appropriate value.

And if Haren is best case scenario, and you’re paying for that scenario but still inheriting the risk…

Maybe someone like Garza is a safer bet value wise.

If you turn the clock back on Haren and he hits free agency as a 25 year old he would get more than 6 years 100 million.

Garza is not a safe bet. He’s older and has an injury history. And we already know that at his best he’s a 3 or 4 starter. With Tanaka you can be reasonably assured he’ll be at least that good and probably better.

  10. ac1 December 17th, 2013 at 2:38 pm

bbb no more 10 year contracts.
they don’t work out for people over 30.
    Alex didn’t
Pujols is only in year 3.

  11. Chip December 17th, 2013 at 2:39 pm

For late inning help I would look at Marmol. He had an awful time of it with the Cubs until they dumped him but then he sort of rebounded for the Dodgers.

He’s got closer experience but wouldn’t cost nearly as much as Benoit or Rodney.

  12. ac1 December 17th, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Like I said in the last thread, if Alex somehow avoided suspension (unlikely i know), this is our lineup

    Ellsbury
    Jeter
    Beltran
    Soriano
    Tex
    Alex
    McCann
    Roberts
    Gardner

    That is a formidable lineup.

Even putting someone comparable to 2013 Alex, that is a threatening lineup top to bottom.

  13. ac1 December 17th, 2013 at 2:44 pm

If A-Rod gets 65 games, he better be 100% focused on getting prepared.
I think he can start in the minors 20 days before the 65 games are up.
We need him to be ready as soon as he is eligible.
Like him or hate him, he is still the best option and makes the lineup better.

Cashman is doing the right thing regarding the infield in 2014.
Sign as many players as possible and let the group battle for spots during ST and
whomever shows they are the best for the job will get hired.
    Plain and simple.
There is a very good chance the majority of these guys won’t stick around long enough to make the team, but that’s the risk vs reward situation that a lot of teams play every year.

None of the guys currently signed to play various IF positions are everyday players.
    Fine.
Point should be to get through 3/4 of the season with several guys and possibly make a huge trade to upgrade a position or two before the trade deadline and make that run in
the post-season for another WS title.

Heyman repeated the same thing on MLB Network not even an hour ago. I don’t understand what purpose the misinformation serves.

Unless their plan is to be like, ‘Hey look we didn’t get to our budget goal so we’re still spending!’ when in reality they’ll have cut payroll by ~$40 million.

  37. Hankflorida December 17th, 2013 at 3:06 pm

Ac1, I agree that Johnson and Roberts cannot compare to Cano and A-Rod of the past, and based on what we have now, this team will not score the runs that it did in previous years because it is a more of a team that moves the line. Ted Nelson disagrees with me on this point, but only time will tell as we compare next year’s team in run production to the team in 2012.

Regardless of what the roster looks like in April, we all should realize the roster
in Oct will be very, very different.
Sometimes for good reason, other times because of injury, etc……

I would never assume that Roberts will be asked to play 150 games and play at a high level.
Same goes for K. Johnson and the other minor signings that have occurred recently.

    Cash is doing his job.
Looking for players that can fill a temporary need. Nothing wrong with kicking all the tires
    and having a look around.
Heck, there is a chance Roberts might not make the opening day roster due to

What I could see them doing is negotiating with Tanaka to have part of his eventual contract kicked back to Rakuten. Stadium renovation donations etc

    ____

A-Rod will NOT be suspended for the entire season, so they should assume he will play part of the season AND his $6M HR bonus, meaning they are over 189, so just go get what is still needed.

  88. Ted Nelson December 17th, 2013 at 4:01 pm

“If they don’t sign Tanaka that is the obituary for the Evil Empire.”

If the Evil Empire tag has lasted through the last 10 or so big veteran IFAs they have not acquired I don’t see why Tanaka is suddenly the tipping point the the same off-season they added two of the top 4 FAs plus paid Beltran and Kuroda both upwards of $15 million in AAV along with some lower priced veteran depth pieces. Plus, if they don’t sign Tanaka they might well grab another SP who costs just as much.

I have no interest in Ryan Howard (either of the Phillies or The Office), you do get extra runs when the routine fly balls of a normal hitter turn into HRs because of your power.

The link was earlier posted by Yankee Trader:

    Total: $200.873MM

    http://itsaboutthemoney.net/ar…..get-12613/

The 200.873 includes Jeter’s 7 mm incentive. Obviously this could happen, and I could win Mega Millions.
    Bring that down to 193.873.
The rest of the 40-man, including Roberts and removing the highest salary remaining
    (+2 -.080 + .88 = +2.8 mm) = 196.673 (round up to 197)
    add the 12 mm in benefits + 4 cushion = 213 mm
remove -13 mm for Soriano and -18 mm for VWells
we end up with 182 mm.

    Add Thorton’s 3.5

    now we’re @ 185.5

Most folks who have calculated the NYY’s LT situation have used assumptions regarding arbitration, bonuses, etc. that could very well make up the difference between what the FO is saying and what the rest of us have (my calculations, assuming settled arb’s is 188 and change, FWIW).

Point being, it’s not worth splitting hairs with the FO over their calculations at this point. They aren’t going to be under 189. Period.

If they don’t sign Tanaka (3 teams are going to push very hard) and ARod is gone for the year, 189 is very possible.

No, Jeter is not getting his bonus.
That leaves a 4mm cushion and 3.5mm under the cap.

We can all agree that if the stayed 7mm under, they would meet their goal.

They weren’t scrambling. They were trying to compel testimony, but that was about it. I assume by “obstructing a Federal Investigation” you’re talking about the reports that the evidence they got was stolen by the former biogenesis people? Meh…

But it’s nice to know that you’re reading Alex’s spin so closely.

The end of the day – none of that stuff matters. After Horowitz hands down his ruling the Federal Courts will dismiss Alex’s case because it has no merit. He would have to prove that the system was corrupt which is very hard to do when both signatories on the JDA say that it wasn’t. End of the day a judge likely says, “this is an internal matter, you had your appeal as proscribed in the CBA, you lost it.” but the court has no authority to intervene and overturn a suspension.

A-rod’s suspension will get overturned and you will all love it. A-rod is the bad guy everybody loves to hate. He’s the anti hero. I wish A-rod would bust out the famous Scarface quote when he retires …

‘You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your **** fingers and say, “That’s the bad guy.” So… what that make you? Good? You’re not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don’t have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. Well, Braun was able to cast doubt on his test results by showing that some guy stored his pee in his fridge over the weekend. Shouldn’t A-rod be able to cast enough doubt over the fact that all of the evidence against him is stolen and thus lacks credibility? Also all the witnesses testifying against him are being paid off by the opposition.

  147. blake December 17th, 2013 at 4:47 pm

  148. Chip December 17th, 2013 at 4:48 pm

Where Alex gets it wrong is that he thinks that MLB playing dirty lets him get off clean. That’s not how it works.

If they had mishandled a sample or something like that – he would be fine. But what’s going to end up happening is that Horowitz will likely declare that yes, MLB did some shady things, but so did Alex and based on the things Alex did he should be suspended (maybe not for 211 but possibly the whole season and whatever post season games the Yankees have) and that MLB has to answer their dealings in another jurisdiction.

The problem for Alex is that jurisdiction has no standing to turn around and say that Alex can’t be suspended. God bless antitrust exemption.

  149. pat December 17th, 2013 at 4:48 pm

Patrick – Chain of custody that got Braun off is explicity stated in the drug-testing program.

If a judge overturns this suspension, Selig is simply going to suspend him using his executive powers for “conduct detrimental to the game”.

A-Rod coming back really requires a tons of things to break his way. Judging by his previous luck… I’m not holding my breath and neither should the Yankees.

    Two problems with that:

    1. Alex’s side rested its case. In fact at the end they refused to participate in the process.

    2. The fact that authorities have concluded that MLB’s information was stolen from Biogenesis gives it more credibility, not less. It would actually have been better for Alex’s side if investigators said they had no friggin clue where MLB got these documents from.

ID, can you show me how you get your salary number? I am nowhere close.

I have 201mm for the 25 man (before Thorton and Roberts)
.88 mm for the rest of the 40 man
-13 and -18 for Soriano and VWells
    Now add 12mm benefits
Add 5.5 for Roberts and Thorton, remove .08mm for the 2 guys leaving the 40 man.

    that’s 181.5, and a 4mm cushion = 185.5

    Heh

funny how the Sux were saying the same thing about Stephen Drew, Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes, and Shane Victorino last year.

They all stayed healthy and they dominated.

We will not be that lucky, I’m afraid.

brianlopez – It’s right there on the RAB article.

Under Contract ($172.61M): Alex Rodriguez ($27.5M), CC Sabathia ($24.4M), Mark Teixeira ($22.5M), Jacoby Ellsbury ($21.9M), Brian McCann ($17M), Hiroki Kuroda ($16M), Carlos Beltran ($15M), Derek Jeter ($12.81M), Ichiro Suzuki ($6.5M), Alfonso Soriano ($4M), Kelly Johnson ($3M), Brendan Ryan ($2M), Wells ($0)

    $172 – $27.5 + $2 (roberts) + $2.5 (thornton) = $149

  158. Yes You McCann December 17th, 2013 at 4:57 pm

Howard cant possibly be as bad as you’re all making him out to be.

  159. Irreverent Discourse December 17th, 2013 at 4:58 pm

Howard has struck out in 30% of his at-bats since signing that contract.

  160. austinmac December 17th, 2013 at 5:02 pm

Would this be a bad thing–first, Tanaka signed and next AROD gets either no suspension or a fifty game one? He would make the team better, at least until he got hurt again.

  161. Hankflorida December 17th, 2013 at 5:02 pm

Pat, the term “if healthy” may not have been used in 2012 as much, but the opening day roster for the 2013 Yankees was Cervelli, Stewart, Overbay, Cano, Nix, Youkalis, Nunez, Gardener, Welles, Suzuki, Defrancisco and Boesch with Hafner at DH and that does bring caution on to this blog.

  162. Irreverent Discourse December 17th, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I’m kind of surprised that a contract is completely eliminated by a suspension and it doesn’t simply recalculate his AAV based on the lost money.

  163. Yes You McCann December 17th, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I cant imagine Teixeira has struck out in lesser than 30%

  164. brianlopez22 December 17th, 2013 at 5:04 pm

-27.5, where is this number coming from?

What about DRob (5.5 likely in arb)
    Gardner (4mm)
    Cervelli (1)
    Nova (2.8)
    Shawn Kelley (1.5)
    That’s 14.9 mm
    - whatever they originally made.

the point is, they are within 5-10 mm of 189.

  165. Patrick December 17th, 2013 at 5:06 pm

ID that 149 number doesn’t include money for arbitration eligible players (~14.8 million), player benefits (~12.085 million), potential bonuses (even without Jeter’s MVP bonus this number is ~3.5 million), and 2-5 million for players on the 40 man roster but not on the 25 man.

I’m pretty confident we are currently sitting somewhere between 180 and 190 million.

Good negotiation by MLB making sure it’s an unpaid suspension.

  167. brianlopez22 December 17th, 2013 at 5:07 pm

    I see you’re removing ARod’s 27.5

Something is off with the math.
All the calc’s I see point to 175 before benefits and after Thorton and Roberts

  168. Irreverent Discourse December 17th, 2013 at 5:07 pm

brianlopez – That’s how much A-Rod is not getting paid next year… this isn’t really that hard to follow. The real point is, you are all simply counting money they are not actually going to spend on payroll.

You You McCann….. “I cant imagine Teixeira has struck out in lesser than 30%”

LOL… Luckily you don’t have to imagine it… you could just look it up. (also, Teixeira strikes out at just under 20%.. Howards career average is 27.9%)

    $149.1mil – Payroll without A-Rod (with Roberts/Thornton)
    $14mil in arbitration contracts
$12mil in “other” which includes translators and all of those miscellaneous expenses you just referred to…
    =
    $175mil

You really want to include the $3mil in bonuses Jeter is not getting? Fine! That’s $178mil. Still under $180mil.

I have a hard time imagining that the Yankees would let him suit up.

Yes, he can still be somewhat productive but that little production comes at a high price in terms of the negative value he brings.

My guess is that at this point they’re just waiting to see how much of his salary will be eliminated and then will eat the rest as a bad investment.

24- RP: Vidal Nuno (Min) $0.511MM
25- RP: Cesar Cabral (Min) $0.511MM

Total: $200.873MM (actually added 24.0 for CC, instead of 24.4)
so the real total is 201.273

    http://itsaboutthemoney.net/ar…..get-12613/

    The 201.273 includes Jeter’s 7 mm incentive.
Subtract, Bring that down to 194.273.
The rest of the 40-man, including Roberts and Thorton and removing two 40 man players
    (+2 +3.5 -.080 + .88 = +2.8 mm) = 200.5
    add the 12 mm in benefits + 4 cushion = 216.5 mm
remove -13 mm for Soriano and -18 mm for VWells
we end up with 185.5 mm.

Again, I know its in that article, but I don’t see it working.

    4. Benefits ($12.085 M)

    5. 15 Players on 40 man roster that aren’t on 25 man (2-5 M)

    You can apologize now. Thanks

  177. Irreverent Discourse December 17th, 2013 at 5:19 pm

brianlopez – You are oncluding a fake $4mil cusion, which is almost the ONLY difference between the numbers we are quoting to each other… The only other thing I can figure (because I’m not rechecking all of those numbers you just posted) is that you have $3-5mil more in arb money than the RAB article has… which is even more wrong than the RAB article.

Also, hyperlinks with “…”‘s in the middle of them don’t work, so when you click that it goes no where… you can’t quote past hyperlinks you have to recreate them yourself.

  178. Irreverent Discourse December 17th, 2013 at 5:24 pm

Patrick – You are going through all of this trouble to argue with me over Jeter’s bonuses that he is not going to get? Silver slugger and Gold glove? REALLY?! Unbelievable.

As I have stated 3 times already, that arb number is too high. But, hey… you don’t seem to care about anything else I have said. Who’s being rude?

  179. Patrick December 17th, 2013 at 5:32 pm

    ID,

You are absolutely being rude. If you don’t think your last several posts are snotty I don’t know what to tell ya .. just relax, no reason to insult the people you are having a conversation with.

You said the arbitration number is wrong but never said why. If anything the arb number is a touch too low, according to baseball-ref those 5 players come in at ~16 million. And it looks like RAB gets their numbers from: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....eligibles/ so I trust the 14.8 number.

It’s absolutely possible Jeter gets a silver slugger and a gold glove. It’s not likely but it’s not out of the realm of possibility like an MVP would be. He won a silver slugger in 2012 and a gold glove in 2010. So what is the possiblity it happens this year, like 5%? You still have to account for that in your budget. What happens if he actually does win those awards and it’s enough to push the team over 189?

  180. brianlopez22 December 17th, 2013 at 5:33 pm

    ID –
the 4mm cushion, as mentioned in the past is for players that will be called up from the minors.
Their salaries jump another .5 mm
    That’s 8 players or a mixture of callups + incentives (Kuroda’s 500K for example)

    apologies with the hyperlink.
    http://itsaboutthemoney.net/ar.....get-12613/

From your river avenue blues article:
    Player contracts = 145.11 (- Arod)
    Arb eligible = 14.8
    8 Min players = 4.088
15 players for the rest of the 40 man = 1 mm
    Total = 164.998 or 165mm
    Thorton = +3.5
    Roberts = +2 mm
    Total = 170.5
    Benefits = 12mm

new Total = 182.5 w/ no cushion + no bonuses
lets say, because of Thorton and Roberts, Betances and Nuno are not on the 25 man, saving 1 mm, still leaves 181 mm.

  181. blake December 17th, 2013 at 5:43 pm

I think 185 is pretty close to the reality without Arod…..but either way Tankaka can’t fit under 189

  182. brianlopez22 December 17th, 2013 at 5:46 pm

correct. no Tanaka, Reynolds only if he’s another 2-3 mm player.

otherwise, we have our 2014 NY Yankees

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
