LoHud still shopping for pinch hitters

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jan 02, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just wanted to post a quick reminder that we’re looking to fill spots for our annual Pinch Hitters series here on the LoHud Yankees Blog.

If you have an idea and would like to write a guest post, send me an email — a few sentences explaining what you want to write — and I’ll make some choices at some point next week. We’re looking for variety and new points of view, whether it’s your take on the Jacoby Ellsbury contract or your defense of Alex Rodriguez or your memory of Kevin Maas.

It’s not first come, first serve — I’ll pick and choose which ideas make their way into the series — but submissions need to be in my inbox by Sunday, January 5. I’ll make decisions soon after and begin contacting all who are chosen. We already have quite a few terrific suggestions.

Send your ideas to: cjennings (at) lohud.com. Thanks everyone.

Nothing wrong being a Liverpool fan.

“Even in a legal environment circumstantial evidence is allowed and there are scores in prison because of it. But this isn’t the legal system. A-Rod juiced, cheated, lied about it, got caught, admitted he lied, associated with those known to be involved with PEDs like his cousin, trainer and doctor and has been caught lying again in the Biogenesis matter. He is trying to use his wealth and batteries of high priced lawyers, pr groups and ethnic advocacy groups to try and portray himself as the victim when in reality the truth is that he has cheated and lied about it for years and mired in the quicksand of narcissism and arrogance continues to do so. He has disgraced the Yankee uniform it’s hallowed tradition and baseball. Maybe someday Jeter will reveal what he really thinks of ARod and this matter. I’m quite sure I know what that opinion would be.”

Absolutely excellent post. Also appreciated your comment about people liking low-lifes because of their celebrity.

The one, only and best ‘Bond’ is ………. Sir Sean Connery

    Hands down the best

Daniel Day Lewis – tremendous actor. Absolutely amazing.

Was Daniel Day Lewis mentioned on the last thread? Christian Bale?

Here’s an interesting article on the Yankee Bullpen and their ranking with inherited runners on base.

    Trisha agrees. :)

  7. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 12:35 pm

Clooney is good due to being extremely selective, (minus “Leather Heads), concerning the roles he will play. I miss his Dad\Nick doing the hosting gig on AMC, but AMC is in total Movie Meltdown. How they can include “Classic” in their title is beyond me. Their series work does merit commendation. DiCAPRIO is a 0 with me. AFFLECK is the current flavor of the month, and he is one of those extremely rare combinations of writer/actor/director, but nowhere near the status Hollywood currently has elevated him to. Reminds me of ORSON WELLS and the Overblown accolades bestowed upon him.

    The Lady or the Tyrant?
By John HeilpernPhotograph by Emma Hardy

Mark Rylance, photographed at the Globe Theatre in London.

“Mark Rylance, routinely described, at 53, as the greatest English theater actor of his generation, is the galvanizing, unmissable actor other actors flock to see. What a treat we have in store! The two-time Tony Award winner is starring on Broadway in the Shakespeare’s Globe productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III (opening in repertory at the Belasco, November 10).

Rylance’s Tony-winning performances revealed his astonishing virtuosity. In 2008 he turned a failed retro farce, Boeing-Boeing, into a hit with his hapless innocent, Robert from Wisconsin: a quiet riot in the spirit of Buster Keaton. In 2011 he was Johnny “Rooster” Byron, the mesmerizing wild gypsy in Jez Butterworth’s state-of-England drama, Jerusalem.”

  10. Howe Farr January 2nd, 2014 at 12:38 pm

DDL is the best actor out there, far and away. Amazing

  11. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 12:38 pm

bill belechick is a football genius. his suggestion that they do away with the extra point is spot on. 96.6% conversion rate is not worth having the play.

i say just eliminate the 1 point conversion. 6 points for a TD and 2 for a non-kicking extra points.

  12. trisha - true pinstriped blue January 2nd, 2014 at 12:38 pm

Baby Ruth – I did! So happy you enjoyed them.

    :)

  13. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 12:41 pm

Lewis just picks out too many screwy roles for me. Sometimes people with his level of talent are just looking for something that Challenges them. They do a great job with their role, but the movie in general is lackluster at best.

  14. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 12:43 pm

damn, i was around most of yesterday but somehow missed randy being banned again and apparently mccann doing something to apologize for…..

    …i miss all the good stuff….. :(

  15. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 12:43 pm

I think you would be better off moving the spotting of the extra point Back, instead of eliminating it.

  16. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 12:44 pm

additionally, if you eliminate the 1 point conversion, the ‘extra points’ rest on the ability of your stars, the qb and the regular offense instead of some holder/kicker combination.

  17. trisha - true pinstriped blue January 2nd, 2014 at 12:45 pm

I didn’t see anything lackluster about Lincoln, My Left Foot, the Crucible, or Last of the Mohicans! I think he picks out great roles and it shows the diversity of acting that he can bring to the screen.

  18. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 12:45 pm

but the conversion rate for field goals inside of 30 yards is also laughable.

  19. J. Alfred Prufrock January 2nd, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Ys Guy – “McCann” is C R 9, the person who keeps trying to find out and expose our personal information.

So “good stuff” does not apply. He does not have my email, needless to say, and I don’t communicate with him. I ignore him and his posse.

Just warning you not to cozy up.

  20. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 12:48 pm

“The Crucible”, “Last ..Mohicans”, “Lincoln”, that oil flick = Yawners. He’s very good, the pic drags.

  21. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 12:50 pm

Move the Extra Point back, And at a Greater angle to the goal posts. The NFL and their “hash marks” is ridiculous for Pros.

  22. Yankee Trader January 2nd, 2014 at 12:50 pm

There were some terrific male leads and supporting roles this year in movies nominated by the Golden Globes:

    Chiwetel Ejiofor – “12 Years a Slave”
Idris Elba – “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”
    Tom Hanks – “Captain Phillips”
Matthew McConaughey – “Dallas Buyers Club”
Robert Redford – “All Is Lost”
    Christian Bale – “American Hustle”
    Bruce Dern – “Nebraska”
Leonardo DiCaprio – “Wolf of Wall Street”
Oscar Isaac – “Inside Llewyn Davis”
    Joaquin Phoenix – “Her”
    Berkad Abdi – “Captain Phillips”
    Daniel Bruhl – “Rush”
    Bradley Cooper – “American Hustle”
    Michael Fassbender – “12 Years a Slave”
Jared Leto – “Dallas Buyers Club”

  27. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 12:53 pm

i want to see the starting offense square off vs. the starting defense on ‘extra points’

the coaches will all be against moving the hash marks back as it limits the offense. im not against it per se, but i dont think you want to tie fixing the extra point situation to changing the way offenses run the rest of the game.

  28. trisha - true pinstriped blue January 2nd, 2014 at 12:53 pm

lincoln is such a characature that it’s an easy role. just put on the stovepipe hat and act akward and you’ve fullfilled everyone’s expectations. i thought it was a pretty good film and a pretty good portrayal, but nothing great.

  32. yankeefeminista January 2nd, 2014 at 12:55 pm

DRob has been a closer his whole career. He had 19 saves for ‘Bama. I am not too worried about him closing.

Daniel Day was brilliant in My Beautiful Launderette and In the Name of the Father.

  33. yankeefeminista January 2nd, 2014 at 12:55 pm

Personally, I prefer Downey Jr, to All other actors, but he’s Strictly about the $$$ Now. I thought Downey Jr stole Zodiac with that Supporting Role he played.

  40. Howler January 2nd, 2014 at 12:59 pm

Would some of the great games of the past be so memorable if missed extra points weren’t part of the game…Yes, it’s easy, most are made…but it’s the one’s that are missed…those that are game changers that will stick with you…if it’s so easy, is it so hard just to keep it. Belichick wasn’t calling for it to be removed, but to make it harder. Just like they ruined kick-offs.

  41. trisha - true pinstriped blue January 2nd, 2014 at 1:00 pm

Baby Ruth – I hear you. Around here we have a very limited offering so I typically end up with the milk chocolate hazelnut. I don’t remember a time that I didn’t try to break a few squares but ended up breaking all of them – and in short order.

  42. trisha - true pinstriped blue January 2nd, 2014 at 1:01 pm

It’s tough not to mention DeNiro and Pacino when you talk about great acting.

  43. RhapsodyInBlue January 2nd, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Gary Oldman has played some great parts over the years, he’s one of my favorites.

  44. Yankee Trader January 2nd, 2014 at 1:03 pm

    Donny
Game of Thrones should have been nominated. Breaking Bad will likely win.

  45. Howe Farr January 2nd, 2014 at 1:03 pm

Lewis in Gangs of New York is the pinacle.

I can see how some folks think that There Will Be Blood drags, i think its a great film and Daniel Day Lewis was beyond amazing.

Also, his Lincoln was the best Lincoln i have seen based on the voice he used, higher pitch that previously protrayed and how he used his body.

    He is, a great actor.

  46. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 1:04 pm

I like DeNiro, but he Now plays Any role they throw at him. That mess currently running with Stallone is ridiculous. I bailed on DeNiro when he did “Frankenstein”.

  47. Yankee Trader January 2nd, 2014 at 1:05 pm

    Trisha

Then when you see DeNiro in roles like The Grudge Match, you wonder if he’s going to get good roles again!

  48. yankeefeminista January 2nd, 2014 at 1:05 pm

McCann, probably best to stick to baseball or you risk having yet another name banned.

Trader – admittedly I’m not a huge movie goer. I pretty much pick and choose. I didn’t see The Grudge Match. I guess I’m thinking of the earlier DeNiro stuff. Hopefully Pacino is being more choosy.

  52. yankeefeminista January 2nd, 2014 at 1:07 pm

hey, thats fine mccann, i was only joking anyway.

idk why anyone wouldn’t address randy as randy. he’s skirting the rules and people who dont feel like going along with it are fine with me.

i have nothing against randy i like him being on here, but he’s currently banned and if he wants to come back under some thin cover that everyone sees though, i have no problem with anyone calling him out.

Jeremy Irons. Some great stuff, along with his Masterpiece Theatre portrayals.

Colin Firth in the King’s Speech. Not so much in Mama Mia – just a terrible movie all around. The casting in that was so strange.

  56. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 1:09 pm

I also like Nick Cage, but with the IRS all over him, I understand him having to do a movie every other month. DeNiro? No excuse.

  57. J. Alfred Prufrock January 2nd, 2014 at 1:10 pm

    Speaking of baseball,

Even though it’s trying to bluster away past failures, splurging in July for IFAs is a good idea.

I will of course have to see them actually do it, but 25M is chump change to the Yankees and even if they lose out on the next two IFA rounds, they’ll be closer to the ETAs of guys like Andujar, Felz, Abellino, Sanchez, Austin, Jagielo, Gumbs, Severino, etc.

  60. yankeefeminista January 2nd, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Ys Guy, haven’t seen it. But I am talking generally. Bad scripts are bad scripts. As for your other comments, you mean like all the other banned people who have come back under new usernames or have multiple names. Only on lohud

You are really missing the point.

Randy’s elderly mother was harassed by the guy “calling him out”.

The same one claiming to be emailing with me, but who has failed to find out my email or any of my private information.

Others have not been so fortunate, including you, IIRC.

  63. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 1:19 pm

omg “night shift” was a dreadfully written and casted formulaic (and totally unbelievable) love story between henry winkler and shelley long directed by ron howard. totally dreadful.

except that howard had the smarts to just let michael keaton blow the whole script away and steal the film.

awesome perfomace which turned a piece of crap into a must-see film, just for that portrayal.

  67. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 1:28 pm

i have/had no knowlege about randy being harrased by cr 9 and i have NO tolerance for that guy and still hold the lohud responsible for what has occurred from that guy up till now.

i was addressing people calling randy out when he’s been coming in here during his banishment and posting under new screen names. i have no problem with people pointing this out.

the other stuff is intolerable and detestable and i have been vocally against it since it started a long time ago.

and ill add that i detest those who have made excuses for this miscreant and tolerate his behavior.

  68. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 1:29 pm

  72. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 1:32 pm

i have never seen the cr 9 character apologize in the fashion mccan did more than once this morning.

that guy’s apologies always run in the ‘i’m sorry but i cant control myself’ fashion which leaves the lingering threat that its going to happen again.

so from what i know, i do not think mccann is that guy unless/until further evidence suggests otherwise.

  73. DONNYBROOK January 2nd, 2014 at 1:33 pm

Walken is another actor that has taken on roles that defy logic. My guess is he became over-exposed with all the Sat Nigh Live stuff.

  74. BoJo January 2nd, 2014 at 1:33 pm

Or even Sean Penn or Kevin Spacey…

  75. J. Alfred Prufrock January 2nd, 2014 at 1:34 pm

    YsGuy,

I believe you are sincere, but that guy is the two usernames I just mentioned.

Hey, it’s not my job to have to alert the board – somebody else working with Lohud needs to do that.

But someone here among us is interacting with this guy and knows he’s using fake usernames and knows he is the source of outing private information, such as calling people’s elderly parents in their home in the middle of the night and posting lies about people’s children on the internet.

I think that someone is a source of the problem, and I also think that source is employing this person to try to ensnare others into getting banned. I am not saying Randy was banned for this reason, but I can see what is going on here, as anyone paying a modicum of attention could.

We have differing views about the Yankees, but that is a ridiculous reason to not mutually wish to protect the blog and each other.

I have repeatedly asked for this situation to be ameliorated and apparently nothing can be done.

That leaves us to police ourselves. We need to do so without regard for which “side” of debates we are on, for that is just baseball stuff. I know you agree with me on this. Randy was one of the few who tried to make the blog a safer place, incidentally.

See you later, and Happy New Year.

Exactly what I mean about paranoia and the continuous scurrilous and ungrounded accusations by one person here.

Baby Ruth is a poster who won the Ritter Sports Bars in the contest this year.

My advice to everyone here is to totally ignore anytime “Pruf” decides to tell you that a poster is a certain person. I’ve yet to see him hit it right.

  78. AAA January 2nd, 2014 at 1:35 pm

Even though it’s trying to bluster away past failures, splurging in July for IFAs is a good idea.

    ============================

I mentioned this the other day. We’re talking about 15 year olds, so the projection involved in these signings is off the charts. But it’s one area where the CBA does allow the Yankees to flex their financial muscle a bit. With no pick in this year’s Rule 4 until the 3rd round, making a hard charge in the IFA market makes sense.

  79. J. Alfred Prufrock January 2nd, 2014 at 1:37 pm

    YsGuy,

Of course it’s him: he is claiming to have my email and of having had an exchange with me via email.

    Think, think.

  80. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 1:37 pm

totally agree with what you posted jpru, i support you in this line of thinking and acting.

i am however not convinced at this point that mccann is that guy, but i remain vigilant.

DeNiro is my all time favorite actor. ONly movie I didn’t like with him was Wag The Dog. Thought that role was awful. Same with Pacino. The movies I thought he did were total bombs were Author Author and Bobby Deerfield

DRob will be fine as the closer. He has great stuff and with some experience he will adjust. Closer is not an area that concerns me in 2014 and going forward.
My baseball New Years resolution is to not let anything written by the NYDN corps of Yankees haters upset me.
I expect it to last until game 2 of the exhibition season. Those guys – Lupica, Madden, Harper, Martino – just piss me off. I know that I should be above it, but they just really bother me. If we win, it’s because of the payroll and if we don’t, it’s because of the farm system.

    ///

    Ys Guy,

I sent Chad two emails about this when this guy appeared in here claiming I had emailed him to warn him off “outing” Randy under a different username.

That post I just looked for and can’t find, so Chad must have zapped it.

Feel free to email Chad and ask him if I sent such an email, and also, feel free to ask Chad if I ever exchanged emails with this person, since it would have to go through him.

He does not have my email, yet addresses me in a post pretending we have emailed each other.

I have barely interacted with this person on Lohud. He tried to get people’s emails when he told the board he could come up with footage to download on Rivera’s last game.

I always know when it’s him, and I’m telling you it’s him.

Well maybe you should email Chad and ask him if Baby Ruth is a multiple.

It’s disgusting to see people falsely accused time and again by the same person.

Personally Ys Guy – and I have no problem with you – I don’t particularly care if you believe me or not. But you should be able to believe Chad.

We all could do better on that front, that’s well said.

But there’s a dramatic difference between huffy debates and deliberately setting out to harm someone or their family.

Apparently, and most unfortunately, some don’t understand that there is such a difference.

  102. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 1:59 pm

as for lots of people on here being accused of having duplicate sn’s, it happens alot but that’s only natural given the valid apprehension about someone among us looking to out our personal information, which has happened to me at least twice that i know of.

so if there is paranoia, it is the fault of the one who has attacked people on here and those who accept his bahavior.

  103. RhapsodyInBlue January 2nd, 2014 at 2:00 pm

  104. trisha - true pinstriped blue January 2nd, 2014 at 2:01 pm

Ys Guy – if you want to know whether Baby Ruth is legitimate, ask Chad. I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate being falsely accused. Beyond that I have nothing to say.

  105. Ys Guy January 2nd, 2014 at 2:03 pm

Right, and if this guy hadn’t posted claiming to have emailed me personally, I wouldn’t have even bothered, since I have some fatigue on this since it really doesn’t seem to eliminate the problem.

But when the guy is addressing me falsely, and is clearly gunning for me, or when he’s going after someone else and I note it, I’ll speak up about it.

  107. J. Alfred Prufrock January 2nd, 2014 at 2:06 pm

It’s not on Chad but on Lohud, who won’t invest in a true moderator for this board.

  108. Blojaldo January 2nd, 2014 at 2:09 pm

Great scripts and directors can make average actors seem great and poor scripts and directors often make great actors appear mediocre. The powers that be in the film industry understand this as do actors peers. This is why, almost to a man and woman, you will hear actors talk passionately about directors they want to work with. An actor has no control over the words they say or how they portray a character. The director has the final day, with very very few exceptions.

Any way, I’d come in to tell people who happen to live in Greater NY metro area to rush in and see Mark Rylance on the stage, since a discussion about acting was taking place.

I also am cautiously pleased that the Yankees are going to splurge on IFAs in July.

I’ll have to see them actually do it, but if they do it, I think it’s a good risk to take, with IFA draft looming and possibly, lower down system guys with high upsides like Andujar and Abellino, etc. being closer, at least in terms of service time, to the majors.

  124. Baby Ruth January 2nd, 2014 at 2:22 pm

I came here last year on the recommendation of another poster here who lives in my neck of the woods who is also a Yankee fan. I love to read the comments and the articles that Chad provides. I was fortunate enough to win the ‘Yankee Wins’ prediction contest and the Ritter Sports bars that Trisha so generously provided, very cool.

I make a comment or state an opinion on how I view the topic and like to interact with others in the spirit of being a Yankee fan and making friends, not enemies. I don’t come here for smut or false accusations of being someone I’m not. This site should be fun and informative, not a PITA.

I have always been respectful of others here and never have had an ill word for anyone. I would expect the same, at least in the the spirit of common courtesy.

I will continue in this spirit and expect the same in return.

    Thanks

  125. J. Alfred Prufrock January 2nd, 2014 at 2:22 pm

*meaning, guys like Abellino and Andujar WILL be closer, or perhaps even here, and therefore the IFAs we miss out on in the next two years, if that plays out, might be less critical, in terms of need at the ML level.

    Have a good day, folks.

Tanaka sweepstakes (BA) They have Mariners as the favorites with Yanks #2.

    “2. New York Yankees

The Yankees desperately need pitching. Even as he enters his age-39 season, Hiroki Kuroda is still a frontline starter, but beyond him the red flags are whipping across the rest of the rotation.

CC Sabathia has lost nearly 3 mph off his fastball over the last two years and is coming off a year with a 4.78 ERA, the worst of his 13-year career. There’s Ivan Nova behind him, and perhaps Michael Pineda can return and be a mid-rotation starter, but he’s extremely risky. Maybe Manny Banuelos can help at some point, but the Yankees can’t count on much from him or anyone else in a farm system that’s thin on starting pitching.

The Yankees are reportedly trying to stay under the $189 million luxury tax, which they’re already pushing up against. Having Alex Rodriguez’s $25 million wiped away would give them more flexibility, which is why Tanaka probably won’t sign until after a decision on Rodriguez’s suspension is announced.

Even if somehow the Yankees get stuck paying Rodriguez his full contract for the 2014 season, why would they be in such awe of the luxury tax? Blow past your draft bonus pool and you lose future premium draft picks. Do that in the international market and you can’t sign anyone for more than $300,000 the next two years. There’s a real talent sacrifice there.

The only penalty for going over the luxury tax is money. The Yankees have plenty of that. What they don’t have is pitching, either in the majors or the minors. The Yankees have sent several of their top personnel to Japan to scout Tanaka, and if they think he’s a frontline starter, that could be an upgrade of four or five wins in a competitive American League East.

If that helps get them to the playoffs, it will be worth the tax money.”

If Walker makes the leap, they can be Rays West with their pitching/park. As per BA, they have only about $67 mil tied up in contracts pre-arb and they have that hefty new TV contract. They could use more O though. Interesting to see what their next move is.

my understanding is that the arbitrator is going to just announce his findings by email or something and that they will not convene the principles. thus the announcement can come any day now, including over the weekend.

i would expect given the repurcussions that are likely once the announcement is made that horowitz will give both sides a warning that the announcement is coming soon. and i further expect that news of an impending announcement will be leaked to the press immediately.

Myself I’m waiting the storm out before I hit the driveway probably early tomorrow morning.

Roads in upstate NY are a mess.

Re the snowstorm bound for the east coast: I am currently in Hawaii, flying out tonite and scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia on Friday evening, where I catch a flight out for Europe. Does anyone from that area know how this snowstorm might affect the airport in Philly?

1400 Flights already Cancelled on the northeast… extend your hawaii stay or..

I thought the storm was supposed to out of here by about 10 tomorrow morning.

By friday evening you might be clear. Philly is only supposed to get 4 inches and the storm will be clear by noon on Friday at the latest. New York will be a bit worse and Boston much worse.

Someday when I win the PowerBall, I’m going to move to a much warmer climate and NEVER snows.
