Watch: Sabathia and Teixeira make random Fallon appearance

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jan 16, 2014 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Let’s end the day with something goofy.

If you haven’t seen it already, here’s the video of Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia on last night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. It’s perfectly absurd, which makes it great. I’m sure Teixeira seems far less likely to do something like this than Sabathia — and that’s probably fair — but Teixeira can be pretty loose and funny at times. I think I’ve written before that Teixeira and I once realized we’d listened to basically the exact same now-obscure bands when we were in college. Of course, Sabathia doing some sort of random TV appearance isn’t much of a shock (nor is it stunning that he’s now joined Roc Nation Sports).

Anyway, here’s the video. Ranks pretty high on the randomness scale.

Did I miss out on the greatest single season pitching performances ?

  8. blake January 16th, 2014 at 10:11 pm

“Make no mistake, Pedro in my mind was one of the very best for his 7-8 year run, but keep in mind he only won 220 games which is about 1/2 his starts.”

    Koufax only won 165 games

    Winning percentage:

    Pedro: .687
    Koufax: .655

Kofax won 52% of the games he’s started. Pedro won 53 % of the games he started

Relative to league average when they pitched….Pedro was significantly better than Koufax both career 153 era+ (131 for Koufax) and career peak 291 for Pedro vs 191 for Koufax .

I don’t want to sound like I’m taking away from what Sandy did….but what Pedro did in a much tougher run scoring environment was even more impressive

  9. Shame Spencer January 16th, 2014 at 10:19 pm

My problem is having to decide what to sort by.. I’ll let you guys argue it out lol, because I don’t think I’m even capable of approaching it.

    Blake
Did you ever see a Koufax pitch? 27 wins one season, 26 another, four no hitters, one a perfect game vs Cubbies against Williams, Santo, Banks.

The best lefty of all time. Fastball, curveball best of their era. Even Gibson told me he was the best.

Elroy Face best single season winning %, 18-1, if you don’t count Masahiro Tanaka who will be signing with the Yankees this weekend.

  12. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:21 pm

I thinkk if Koufax were pitching in the 1997-2001 era of Pedro, he would be killed by the juiced up batters….slaughtered even…

What else could one expect of a 62 year old pitcher?

Kofax won 52% of the games he’s started. Pedro won 53 % of the games he started

    ===============================

Roger Clemens won 50% of the games he started
    Andy Pettitte won 49%
    Tom Glavine won 45%
    Grag Maddux won 48%

  16. Pat M. January 16th, 2014 at 10:23 pm

ERA + is what your basing your entire argument on ???? Listen I respect your position and such, however I’m not so certain that Pedro would come up as a top 10 pitcher in history where as most regard Koufax as the greatest ever. And this comes from not fans but players and the baseball profession……He’s the Babe Ruth of the slab….

  17. blake January 16th, 2014 at 10:24 pm

    “Blake

I didn’t no….but again all we have to go on is the numbers now. I saw Pedro pitch…..and there was a period where he has the best fastball in baseball, the best breaking ball in baseball, the best CU in baseball, and the best command in baseball……Pedro pitched in a much tougher offensive era and totally dominated

  18. Cashmoney January 16th, 2014 at 10:25 pm

Yes era + relates a pitcher to the league average when they played and also adjusts for the ballparks. I don’t know that any of the players that hit against Pedro woukd agree with that

  21. chicken_stanley January 16th, 2014 at 10:26 pm

Upstate… I don’t have my schedule close by but I think I will be there in late Feb.

I spent 3 months in Syracuse last year… I’ve been all over the country and I have never ever seen an area more nuts about college basketball

Jayson Stark today for what it’s worth.

“In non-replay news, amazing how many owners in Arizona were convinced the Cubs are ready to blow away the field and sign Tanaka to a monster deal.”

  23. blake January 16th, 2014 at 10:27 pm

Era+ isn’t the only stat either that suggests Pedro was better

  24. Cashmoney January 16th, 2014 at 10:28 pm

    MTU

Help me out here. I took Koufax, Gibson, and Ryan earlier and my home run power hitters were Mantle ! Killebrew, and McCovey vs anyone’s more modern day 3 pitchers and hitters for a home run derby in Petco Park. Total number and distance counts.

  26. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:29 pm

    Pat M. January 16th, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Most baseball books I have read put Walter Johnson and Cy Young and Christy Mathewson at top…Koufax may have been greatest lefty, but I have never read any book calling him greatest ever.

  27. Pat M. January 16th, 2014 at 10:29 pm

BoJo…..Sandy is close to 80 and about 10 years ago he could still bring it at 80 during BP. Yogi Berra who’s been around a very long time said that Koufax wasn’t human. Vince Scully is steadfast that for 6 years ( 1961-1966 ) he had never seen any pitcher who dominated the game like he did….

  28. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Vin Scully never saw the pitchers I mentioned.

  29. blake January 16th, 2014 at 10:30 pm

The more time that passes…the better players you watched seem to get. I’ll probably be telling some kid 30 years from now that I saw Pedro Martinez throw a 103 mph screw ball!

  30. Blojaldo January 16th, 2014 at 10:31 pm

It was Koufax’s performance between 1963 and 1966 that was really spectacular.

  31. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:33 pm

    Modern day?

I’d put Johnson, Martinez, and Rivera as pitchers, and Manny R, Bonds, and Josh Hamilton up against them…assuming everyone in their prime.

  32. Yankee Trader January 16th, 2014 at 10:34 pm

    Blake

You can hold dear to your memories, I to mine. Maybe we can just say, Koufax was the best lefty and Martinez the best righty of all time, well of any time the LoHudders remember seeing them live at a game or live on TV!

Does that work, or do I have to summon the Ted!! :)

  33. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:34 pm

I’ve recently read accounts that Koufax also threw an Elroy Face type forkball, but have zero recollection of that. anyone know about it?

  34. Blojaldo January 16th, 2014 at 10:35 pm

Koufax had better numbers than Kershaw comparing his 63-66 to Kershaws 10-13.

    Koufax – 150 starts – 1.86 ERA – 0.91 WHIP
    Kershaw – 118 starts – 2.45 ERA – 1.03 WHIP

  35. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:36 pm

I saw Walter Johnson on TV…Ken Burns Baseball.

  36. Pat M. January 16th, 2014 at 10:38 pm

Blake……Once again in the era of the pitcher, Koufax was the Best pitcher. As for Cy Young and Walter Johnson and Christie Matts, yes their numbers are insane but they never faced all the 500 homerun hitters that Koufax faced. Shame there isn’t more video on the great # 32 because he was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen throw a baseball…..I remember watching Pete Rose going on and on about facing Koufax , even the ego maniac Rose bowed his head in reverence. Sandy ate up The 63 Yanks, 65 Twins…

  37. BoJo January 16th, 2014 at 10:38 pm

Where the heck can you find an arbitrator when you need one?!

  38. Yankee Trader January 16th, 2014 at 10:38 pm

    Bojo

We’re talking here, greatest during the LoHudders time on earth!

Go back to the late 1800′s and some of these pitchers were 50 plus game winners in a single season.

  39. Blojaldo January 16th, 2014 at 10:40 pm

To me, what made Koufax really supernatural was that he telegraphed his pitches and everyone knew what was coming . . . and they still couldn’t hit him!

  40. MTU January 16th, 2014 at 10:40 pm

    Bojo-

All this talk about pitchers made me think of Eddie Feigner… The King and his Court… Ok, its not baseball but was quite a show. When Mays killed Chapman with his submarine rising fastball to the head, I could not believe it. In truth, I learned about it twenty years later. Koufax was the most dominant pitcher against both and right handled batters while Ewell Blackwell of the Reds was the most dominant pitcher against right handed hitters that I ever saw. Speaking about the Reds, I did listen to Johnny Vandermeer’s second no hitter in a row over the radio against the Dodgers because it was the first night game to be played at Ebbets Field. Now, there is a record that will never be broken.

  128. Mike Ri January 17th, 2014 at 7:23 am

Numerous owners have told ESPN’s Jayson Stark that they think the Cubs “are ready to blow away the field” and sign Masahiro Tanaka.

It comes on the heels of an earlier report Thursday from FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal that said the Cubs were “pushing hard” for the Japanese right-hander. It’s going to take well over $100 million to sign Tanaka, though it’s unclear at this point to what lengths the Cubs might be willing to go. Tanaka’s wife reportedly prefers her husband to play on the West Coast, but it sounds like the biggest bidder might come from the Midwest. The Dodgers, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Angels and Mariners are also expected to be in on the righty.

All things being equal, I think the Yankees offer one thing to Tanaka that no other team can compete with and that is its history. If you love baseball, anywhere in the world, you want to play on the team that has the richest history and the most prestige. That is without a doubt the New York Yankees. Now if Tanaka chooses another team, it means he made the decision based on either money or family. However, I don’t see how Chicago gets him to his goal. The Dodgers are an attractive fit for him for lots of reasons, so I really think its between us and the Dodgers.

As for when we will hear, my sense is that it will be at the very last minute we could possibly find out. Too many assumptions go into thinking it will be today. I think more likely is Tuesday.

Tanaka chatter from Japan is that:

    - Tanaka has not decided yet.

    - He will begin narrowing down his choices in the next few days

    - Some believe he will decide between the 22nd and 24th.

    - Kyodo News in Japan apparently has a non-story saying the above. Will look for link (YT?).

    - Some of the above is coming from former Eagles PR person Yoshiki Sato. Will look for confirming link.

    - No team has an advantage at this point.

    ===============================

Depends on how one defines “recent”. Obviously last year was not good. On the other hand, if we were to consider the last 10 years as being recent history, I would suggest that any of about 25 organizations would happily take the level of success the Yankees have enjoyed over that period, even though it hasn’t really been up to “Yankees standards”.

This Tanaka process reminds me of Cliff Lee a little bit. I remember going to bed checking for updates, waking up checking to see if the Yanks got their #1 target. It’s obviously not the same situation but I feel like it’s similar… the Yanks competing with a small handful of teams for the top free agent pitcher.

I’ll always root against Lee bc of how that went down but he’s pitched well. I hope I can root for Tanaka in pinstripes…

  151. austinmac January 17th, 2014 at 8:28 am

Drew is going to cost less than you think. Two years at 8-10. I don’t think it will happen, but that, in my mind, gives us our best shot.

  154. AAA January 17th, 2014 at 8:30 am

  157. blake January 17th, 2014 at 8:32 am

2 years at 8-10 million per is a steal for Drew when you consider what Peralta got and what Hanley and Headly will get next year. Drew’s market could be depressed to a point where he’s a good bargain. Fangraphs had him being worth right at 17 million for 2013……his injury history is a concern and I’m sure that’s part of the reason why teams are shying away (that and the draft pick attached)…..but for 2 years it’s a good risk for the position the Yankees are in right now.

  158. BD (Boston Dave) January 17th, 2014 at 8:33 am

Your “heart of the matter” may not be based on the same criteria as Tanaka’s, so WADR, anything you or I may think or assume is BS.

I believe that there are many non-monetary issues that carry weight in this process (and it is a process). As you know, the Japanese are more organization-driven, rather than individual-driven.

Ma-Kun has said many times he wants help carry his team to championships.

Money will matter, but, as I have always maintained, it won’t come down to that.

    Prestige.

“What about your “If Tanaka really wants to challenge himself…” theory? What greater challenge is there than being one of the key guys in attempting to end over a century of failure?”

if he really wants to challenge himself he will take the mound at Yankee Stadium. There isn’t any pressure pitching for the Cubs…..they have no expectations short term….the fans generally don’t get on guys too much…..they haven’t won since 1908. Maybe that appeals to Tanaka….the lower pressure environment……but if he wants to challenge himself he will be a Yankee

  170. MTU January 17th, 2014 at 8:47 am

He would know if that is important to him right now.

I have no idea what his definition of testing himself is only my own version.

He can stay with Jeter in Tampa while at ST

He can compare and hone the splitter by having Kuroda there.

    He gets a bigger locker.

    These are all positives, right?

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
